2019 Pedroncelli Signature Selection Chardonnay, Dry Creek Valley
Tasting Notes
Tropical fruit, citrus and peach aromas lead to juicy fruit flavors of lime, pineapple, honey and vanilla notes. The blend of the two Chardonnay lots adds both fruit forward qualities and a creamy texture. Highlighted by bright acidity, the wine finishes clean and refreshing. Drink now—no aging required.
Vineyard & Winemaking Notes
The Chardonnay fruit is sourced from the Frank Johnson Vineyard located at the southern end of Dry Creek Valley. This vineyard benefits from the cool microclimate and alluvial soils near the Russian River and produces Chardonnay with exceptional fruit and balance, culminating in great character. Spring rain and an even tempered growing season offered ideal conditions for development in the grapes and, as a result, they reflect bright acidity, high intensity of aromas and excellent quality.
The winemaking goal is simple: showcase the distinctive fruit of each variety. This focus on fruit is particularly important in creating the Signature Selection Chardonnay. After the grapes were picked the third week of September, we use stainless steel tanks to ferment 90% of the wine, capturing the fresh fruit flavors. The balance was separately barrel fermented in American oak barrels and aged for eight months before being combined. The barrel fermentation and secondary or “malolactic” fermentation added some creamy notes giving a boost of complexity to the finished wine.

2019 Pedroncelli Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Creek Valley, East Side Vineyard
Tasting Notes
Pale yellow, brightly aromatic and very varietally correct-true to the Sauvignon Blanc grape. The clean and fresh flavors are layered with pear, Meyer lemon and tropical fruits. Our Sauvignon Blanc is crisp with notes of citrus, green apple, grass and a touch of minerality. The finish is quite refreshing. Please enjoy upon release or within a year or two as no aging is required.
Vineyard Notes
Dry Creek Valley has a great pedigree for growing and developing great fruit characteristics as well as bright acidity in Sauvignon Blanc. We sourced two vineyards for this vintage: our estate vineyards as well as Kay Wood’s. Each vineyard’s microclimate combines sun, soil and fog to retain ripe fruit and crisp flavor. Add these components to the special care and attention from the vineyard crew and the resulting wine is a wonderful reflection of terroir—wherein the sum is greater than the parts.
Vintage & Winemaking Notes
Quite a bit of rain in the winter and early spring slowed the growing season and the maturation of the vineyard. It set a nice pace for the vintage. Grapes were harvested one week later than normal. Perfect weather conditions during harvest season with even-handed warm days and cool nights developed more aromatics and flavors than in previous vintages.
Once the grapes are destemmed and pressed, the juice goes to stainless steel fermenting tanks to cold soak for 24/48 hours. Inoculated with selected yeast and slow fermentation at about 58F in stainless steel tanks completes the process. Keeping the temperature controlled during fermentation maintains varietal flavors. The wine is bottled a few months after harvest without oak aging or malolactic fermentation. The style of this Sauvignon Blanc captures freshness and showcases the luscious Dry Creek Valley fruit.

The year was 1927. President Calvin Coolidge captured the imagination of nobody. Babe Ruth hit home run after home run powered by little more than whiskey and sausage. And John Pedroncelli, Sr. bought a vineyard and winery in Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County. Since then, two elements remain unchanged: the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms vineyards, and the family’s dedication to making fine wines.
Nine decades strong, we are still family owned and operated. It all adds up to tradition, heritage and a family of wines you can enjoy with confidence.

The SB from Wine Enthusiast:
88 Points. With a Musqué-like perfume, this light white shows aromas of jasmine and lifted flavors of Meyer lemon, fresh peach and mango. The acidity is focused and fresh, underscoring the wine’s overall crispness. VB 8/1/20
88 Points. This almost clear colored Sauvignon Blanc from Pedroncelli opens with a lychee like bouquet with hints of vanilla and lime. On the palate, we found this wine to be light bodied and light in flavor. Those delicate and subtle flavors were lemon, lychee and mandarin orange. They were quite enjoyable and fade away nicely. We would serve this good value Sauvignon Blanc with a filet of sole cooked in butter and lemon. – Karen & Stuart June 20, 2020
@sosptuba I like Friends a lot. One of my favorite offerings here last year was the mixed case of Ped Friends and Rosé. I’ll be looking for that again!
@baldwino0@sosptuba@Winedavid49@sosptuba If this was SB and Friends I’d be in for a case in an instant. I’m not as big of a chard fan, although this one has not seen much oak so it is more likely in my preferred (stainless) arena.
@baldwino0@Mark_L@sosptuba@Winedavid49 fwiw, the 2018 is not very oaky or buttery. I’m not much of a Chardonnay fan either, but the 2018 is good, especially for a change every now and then. I’m down to 1 bottle of the 2018, so I might be in for a case here.
2019 Pedroncelli Dry Creek Chardonnay “Signature Selection”
Good morning, Mates! Not a lot of time to evaluate this one, as it arrived yesterday afternoon and went on sale at midnight. No bottle rest from travel!
And the mystery didn’t last long after Alice’s email, when I saw the shipper’s reference “PEDCHARD” … ha!
Screwcap. Alcohol 14.1% (printed in 5-pt type on the edge of the label).
Vintage 2019 isn’t even available on Pedroncelli’s website yet. I noticed that the 2018 version of this was offered on Casemates back in July 2020. I figure the style will be similar: minimal oak and ML, and probably 80-85% stainless steel tank fermented. “Taste the fruit, not the barrel.” That is the style I prefer, so … #winning !
Arrived well-chilled the warm hands of the UPS man (hey, it’s March in Michigan). Opened right away, let it warm up a bit.
Pale straw in color. Very clear.
Shortly after opening:
Aromas of pineapple, lime peel, maybe a not-quite-ripe peach.
Bright acidity and clean fruit flavors of gentle citrus and zest, again I’ll say flavor of a white peach a day short of ripe, but with a hint of honey. Slightly creamy mouthfeel, maybe that’s the understated kiss of malolactic fermentation. Any oak that’s there is subservient to fresh fruit flavors. It hits all sides of the palate nicely.
Clean and delicious, unmanipulated, balanced, solidly medium-bodied Chardonnay for the money, which based on the last offering will likely be sub-$10 by the case. Excellent value!
Three hours after opening:
Gaining just a bit of weight. Adding a bit of glycerin mouthfeel… quite velvety. Adding a hint of warm spices, and that white peach is now fully ripe. The wine is delicious and satisfying and wayyy too easy to drink!
Had the SB before and loved it. Hard to pass up anything offered by Pedroncelli. Got a case of their rose from Meh that should be here later this week. Two much wine, but for this price I can’t resist.
2019 Pedroncelli Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Creek Valley, East Side Vineyard
Excited to rat again.
Pale straw color, nose was all tropical fruit on opening. After letting it warm a bit the palate was pretty similar. Lychee, peach, and lime up front with a little minerality fading out at the end. The acidity gave it some zing and the mouthfeel had a nice weight to it. This would be great as a summer sipper and would go with fatty foods just as well. Good value at $10 and under.
2019 Pedroncelli Sauvignon Blanc, Dry Creek Valley, East Side Vineyard
Happy to note that we received the Pedroncelli Sauvignon Blanc. Pedroncelli is one our favorite casemates wineries, even from the site before, and always a fantastic QPR, so we were thrilled to have the chance to try a new-to-us bottle/varietal. Immediately put it in the fridge as we received it on Tuesday afternoon for this Wed offer.
Very pale straw color, no cloudiness or age present.
We pulled it out of the fridge for initial pop and pour. Light florals on the nose, but still too cold to really smell much.
First sip showed some light grass, a hint of stone fruit, but still too cold. Light body and refreshing with good acidity.
After letting it sit in the glass for 10 mins and warm up a bit, more grass and some mineral showed. Hints of apricot and a bit of florals, but not enough to identify more strongly.
Went quite well with the baked tilapia in herb-butter sauce we had for dinner.
Seems to be a very good representation of a sauv blanc, as I would expect from Pedroncelli. Anticipate $10 a bottle.
Haven’t had any of the Pedroncelli SB yet- I liked the previous offer of the 2018 Chard a lot, though haven’t finished it all yet… what the heck, in for a case.

2019 Pedroncelli Signature Selection Chardonnay, Dry Creek Valley
Hey! Got a notice about a delivery yesterday and waited for the lab rat email. When it didn’t come, well, hey hey, I guess we’re tasting with what we have on hand! Box arrived yesterday afternoon – the Pedroncelli Chardonnay!
Yesterday I left the house for the first time in months, to go to Ikea to get shelves for our new home bar/wine storage area. Brought those home and we built shelves while cooking a super easy pre-fab dinner: a Costco chicken pot pie. They’re notoriously a little salty.
After 90 minutes, we’d gotten the shelves up and the pot pie was ready, so it was time for dinner and tasting. The wine was a bit warm, perhaps, a cool room temp. Twist open cap fit the ease of the evening!
Okay, but you want to know about the wine. Immediate juicy flavors – light peach, maybe a bit tropical. Almost a sparkling feel on the palate. A “bright” wine, but not unpleasantly so. I think that would be the kind of citrus vibe. Really smooth and pleasant finish. There was enough there to stand up to the saltiness of the pot pie. We were a bit thirsty from building the shelves and the “juicy” quality of the wine really served well for that.
We’d call it “easy to drink” in the best possible way. It made me think of the before times, of sitting outside in the summer with friends. Wow, wine is making me all optimistic about the coming months! It’s a great value at the price and just a solidly enjoyable pour.
@Sardinicus Remember when “biorhythms” were a thing? It was the 70’s; we had a Fortran computer program that would print the overlapping waves which supposedly started when you were born, so you needed to enter a birth date to start. And they would indicate peak of emotional and other peak abilities on a certain day.
Some “new age” mumbo-jumbo from that era turned out to actually be meaningful and beneficial when looked back on decades later. That one, though… um, most likely nah!..
@pmarin I remember it all including the FORTRAN – asterisk characters on green-and-white lined paper with index holes on the side. (Though I was more into the turn-based Star Trek FORTRAN game).
I guess the parts of the new-age mumbo jumbo that were actually useful (yoga, meditation, general fitness) have become so mainstream that we forget that they were once lumped in with biorhythms and Pyramid Power.
And somehow Astrology (which Biorhythms always seemed like a dumbed-down version of) continues on its merry way.
In for a case. Good timing, as I am running low on daily white sippers. Usually more of a red guy, but I seem to be in more of a mood for whites these days – maybe linked to hopes for better things with the coming of Spring.
Finally. I’ve been running low on whites. Lots of reds and rose in cellar, but whites were becoming a problem. Keep ‘em coming. Gotta drink the rainbow.
I was frying up some Lake of the Ozarks crappie tonight and decided to open this Sauvignon Blanc. Very enjoyable! Especially enjoyed the lemon flavors of the wine along with the fish.
