Our Mother Clone is a classic ‘Dry Creek’ Zinfandel with aromas of ripe red berries with a touches of cinnamon, vanilla, and white pepper spice. Red cherry flavors combine with vanilla, licorice and warm baking spices. The berry-spice combination, so typical of Dry Creek Zin, includes a touch of pepper with the rounded finish which are a hallmark of our style.
Mother Clone Vineyard Sources
The Pedroncelli house is founded on Zinfandel. It was the first grape planted in the early 1900s, it was the first wine Giovanni made after Prohibition ended and it was also the first varietal we labeled under our name in 1947. Using the budwood from the mother vineyard to clone a second generation carries our vineyard story forward, echoing the generations of our family. The fruit from three generations of these “mother” vines are part of the blend as well as fruit from the Bushnell and Giovannoni vineyards.
Winemaking
It was a good growing season with a warm summer and few heat spikes in September. Grapes for the Mother Clone Zinfandel come mostly from the home ranch on the hillsides of Dry Creek. The grapes were picked the second week of September based on maturity and acidity levels. A high concentration of phenols and aromatics in this vintage. At the crushpad, destemmed grapes are transferred to a fermentation tank to cold soak for 48 hours and then is inoculated with selected yeast. Daily pump-overs and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with delestage regimes are done for maximum phenolic extraction. Pressing follows and the new wine is transferred to storage tanks until barreled down. Twelve months of aging in American oak barrels develops additional complexity. The addition of Petite Sirah (9%) adds depth of color and brings structure to the wine.
For nearly a century, the Pedroncelli family has been crafting exceptional wines in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley. It all began in 1927 when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased a vineyard and a small winery west of Geyserville; two elements have remained unchanged since then - the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms their vineyards and their dedication to creating fine wines.
For nine decades, the Pedroncelli family has been producing wines of the highest quality, tradition and heritage. Their commitment to excellence and their family-run business make them a trusted source of great wines - enjoy them with confidence.

ddeuddeg received notification from Alice that he was to be a Lab Rat and we headed out to our local UPS Depot to pick up the bottle. He opened the box right there and found a 2020 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel! “Oooo! Nice!” was my thought. This should be good!
We’ve had a strange, busy week and realized that we had to make sure to taste this wine and get our write ups done. Yep. We had homework during the summer! Damn! Tonight, we headed out to Shakespeare in Delaware Park in Buffalo, NY to see Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare in Delaware Park is the second oldest Shakespeare Festival in the country—and, it’s FREE! (Unselfish plug: if you are local: Get thee to the Hill! (If not, road trip!) This is NOT your mother’s R&J! It is sooo accessible story-wise! The modern music and dress worked well and did not distract. The modern gestures were awesome.) Oh, sorry. I’m supposed to be reviewing the wine! :blushing:
The 2020 Pedroncelli Mother Clone did not disappoint. This is a big, bold zin! We decided to have it during the second half of the play with some cheddar cheese and Keebler Onion crackers. Nothing fancy tonight. We had a reception to attend before the show so we brought it to the park in our cooler with chill packs—temps were in the 76-degree range today and we packed the car around 5:15 pm. We removed the wine from the cooler around 8:15 and popped the cork around 8:45. It was a bit too chilled, but still delicious! I cupped the bowl of my glass to warm it up a bit and it was soooo fruity and full-bodied and beautiful and yummy!
We saw one of our actor friends at intermission and told him that we would save him a taste for after the show. He had another actor with him and they both joined us for a copa. Actor friend #1 loved it—we knew he would! We’ve shared a few bottles with him! Actor friend #2 is more of a white wine drinker. But he really liked this zin! I think we made a convert to red wine! Yippee!
My recommendation: Get thee to the Big Green Button (?) and buy this wine! You won’t be disappointed! This wine is a great value for the price and has great aging potential.
I just read the Tasting Notes from the winery AFTER I posted my report. (I never read up on a wine until after I review it.) I had no idea that this wine was 15.9% alc! It is sooo smooth and well-balanced that I had no clue! There was no hint of that amount of alc! Keep in mind that it was dark on the Hill by the time ddeuddeg poured the wine and I only looked at the front of the label when he opened the box at UPS. Sorry that I couldn’t grasp at aromas and flavors–we didn’t bring our best wine glasses to the Hill! And, the magic of these actors captured my attention and distracted me a bit!
@bahwm You’re certainly right about the alcohol. It’s hard to believe 15.9%! (I had some from the May offer and just opened a bottle.) It’s very smooth in the mouth for such a young and alcoholic wine. Long finish, too.
Another thing I like about it is that the 30% new American oak was not wasted: it’s not prominent, but particularly on the first taste there is a definite strong hint of oak. While I’d be happy with more oakiness, it’s good to get a little, particularly at this price point.
I got a call from my friend at the UPS depot one day last week, saying that there was a single bottle box there for me. I headed on over there and sure enough, he was right. I opened it up, and there inside was a bottle of 2020 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel. This was particularly thrilling because I happen to have a long history with this wine; I was serving it with Thanksgiving Day turkey dinner well over 30 years ago. We set it aside to find a suitable occasion to pop the cork, and found just the right opportunity: not the usual elaborate dinner, but something better. Our local outdoor Shakespeare festival production of Romeo and Juliet just opened, and we had plans to see it. This was to be the perfect post-intermission bottle. After the pre-show VIP reception with the promised “light fare,” we settled into our seats and polished off the chicken salad I had prepared earlier. Once the first half was over, we pulled the cork on our Zin, sliced some delicious Cheddar cheese, and proceeded to enjoy a wonderful bottle of wine. As mentioned, I have a long history with this wine, so I had an idea what to expect, and it did not disappoint. A hint of dark fruit on the nose, and more on the palate. Black raspberries, cherries, soft tannins, everything I’d come to expect from the beloved Mother Clone, a classic example of my favorite varietal. One of our friends from the cast dropped by after the show as we were packing up, along with another of our thespian buddies, and we poured them samples. Nate, a self-professed white wine drinker, really liked it. No surprise there, this is always a crowd-pleaser. At this price, it’s a typical example of what WD likes to call “a screaming deal.” Don’t risk a sellout, click the buy button right away.
Love when I receive an Email from Alice saying a Rat bottle is on its way! Was excited to see that it was a 2020 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel! Full disclosure, I really like Pedroncelli wines!
I had my usual tasters help me (mom, dad and brother).
PNP
Color - Beautiful deep dark red cherry, almost black
Aroma - you do smell the heat from the high alcohol and some dark cherry
Taste - It was a bit tight with some dark cherry. My mom was surprised at how smooth it was. She is very tannin sensitive, so she was happy it wasn’t super tannic.
Venturi
Aroma- the heat is gone, still dark cherry
Taste- smoother, more cherry and a hint of black pepper
mom preferred the wine PNP
we guessed price to be between $18-25
Overall impressions
This is a great everyday wine, which is what I love about their wines. I personally prefer Pedroncelli wines with a bit more age on them. (It’s hard to resist opening what you have.)
Thanks Alice and WD!!
@mommadeb appreciate the great review. Noticing that the wine had been aged in American oak, I wanted to ask you if you felt that the oak flavor, or oak tenants were predominant? I’m always OK with American oak, as long as I don’t notice it! Thanks very much again
@Leatherchair
Hopefully you enjoy it as much as we do! I had the last tiny bit left tonight. It was so good! Nice, smooth and flavorful. Still can’t believe the alcohol is 15.9! Would never have guessed it.
@mommadeb thank you. I’m definitely planning on it. Amazing that the 15.9% doesn’t stand out. A throwback to the 90’s, I guess without the prunes. Thanks again
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations).
2020 Pedroncelli Mother Clone Zinfandel - $20 = 11.76%
The 2020 is currently $24/bottle direct from Pedroncelli. Case discounts put this down to $21.60. Still, a case here is $12.50/bottle. Shipping excluded, but yea. Hard pressed to not be in for 2…We have Pedroncelli as our ‘house wine’ so we do go through it at a decent pace.
I was on Long Island for a week last month and stumbled upon the 2013 vintage of this wine in the “bargain bin” in a tiny liquor store in Uniondale for $11. Bought two bottles to drink in the room and will attest that this wine does age gracefully. Very well balanced; smooth as could be. Really welcome relief from the hotel selection.
@louas
Reading between the lines, would it be possible to assume
(ass-u-me) that before it got to the bargain bin, it didn’t have optimum storage for the previous 8-10 years before being sold? So how important are optimum storage temps. I’m questioning this as I’ve recently moved, and don’t yet have ideal basement temps, although I’m in process of installing Dedicated A/C for wine room.
@louas@winecaseaholic My wine cellar is also colloquially called a “basement”. Stays around 60 degrees ±5 degrees. I have had 25 year old wine from this cellar which has been fantastic. Don’t sweat it.
I just noticed that the Specs say 2019. The bottle says 2020, and 15.9% ABV, but I wonder about the rest. BTW, even at 15.9%, as others have suggested, barely perceptible heat.
Egads! Just checked and we are down to 2 bottles of the 2018 Mother Clone. How quickly they disappear. Perfect timing to reload with the new vintage.
(BTW- also found a '97 Pedroncelli Morris Fay Vineyards Alexander Cab Sauvignon hiding in the rack— guesses on how it might be??)
I see Mother Clone Zin at a local grocery store, sometimes on sale for $17 or so (rivaling the last ped offering) but more recently their non-sale price went up to $20 and hasn’t been on sale - seems like it’s back in the QPR zone!
With a case of Scott Harvey Zin delivered (to a UPS store waiting pickup) today (to go along with the case of Barbara from a recent offering), I am fighting the urge to pick up a case of this (with my storage back to the overflowing stage).
This is a steal folks. This is a quadruple 90+pt wine (from those whom others think matter). I’m trying to move through the last of the inventory to reveal our all new-made over-elements of our history- and a tip of the hat to the future-packaging. Lots of renovation going on with this iconic brand…stay tuned. WD and I have things up our sleeves! Press the button. It won’t be at this price for long!
@rjquillin Hi Ron-contents not affected, and this place holds a special place in my heart. It was time to address the packaging-we’d had the current label since the 2011 vintage-that is about three times longer than normal. And the only changes to the contents will be improvements to the barrel program and overtime replanted vineyards. Just shining up the bell so it rings more beautifully!
@pedroncellifam Gotta be Ed.
Good to see you here again. We miss your banter for these offers.
Hope all is well with you, Julie and the rest of the crew.
Truth be told, I really liked the throw-back labels you did a few years ago. Hope the new ones are as elegant.
@rjquillin Yes, it’s me! Elegant is a word…we weren’t looking for elegant. We were looking for whimsical with elements that pull our near 100 year history into the label. Parts from the 40’s, a font from the early 70’s and an illustrations and colors that our 4th generation family members did flips over. Our future is so bright you’ll need shades!
@pedroncellifam@rjquillin Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got up your sleeve! And it sounds like maybe a new Woot Cellars - erm, Casemates - wine may be coming?
@pedroncellifam Hey Ed - Though I have a well stocked Ped cellar, one cannot have too much Mother Clone. BTW: Just had the Friends White the other day - love the balance. You guys are the best!
Just bought a case of J Dusi Zin and 2 cases of Scott Harvey Zins, then I see this auto buy. I can’t resist. I did it again. I need a drinking problem to match my buying problem, and more parties!
@mikepav I hear that! I bought the Scott Harvey Zins, J Dusi, and the Kent Rasmussen. Love your statement “I need a drinking problem to match my buying problem”.
@mikepav@woopdedoo It was a 24-hour Friday offer. I’m looking forward to receiving that wine more than any in a long time! The 2016 Esoterica Pinto and Cab mixed case was my first Casemates purchase. I was a Kickstarter for Casemates…thought I’d try ordering wine online on a whim, but that Pinot really made me fall in love with red wine! And Casemates has garnered a lot of money from me based on that single purchase!
@kawichris650 I still have a number of bottles - our tasting on tour was incredible - Kent pulled out bottles from seemingly every vintage - AND, we got serenaded by his lovely wife.
Very hot and humid in NFL right now, but this is one of my favorite zins! I buy this every time I have the opportunity and cannot pass this up.
/giphy delightful-proper-ravioli
I’m not understanding the “steal” part of this deal. A simple wine searcher skim shows at least 10 places selling this wine for under $15/bottle. Is it a fair price? Yes but not quite a steal even when you factor in shipping.
@losthighwayz I just did a website search of one of our Twin Cities local family owned chains and their price is $23.99. So the $12.50 case price is screaming here. Cheers!
@losthighwayz A “simple wine searcher skim” shows 2 places (not at least 10) showing the 2019 under $15 ($14.99). There isn’t a single one with this wine under $15. A more in-depth look shows considerable shipping costs at every one of the 5 cheapest sites for any number of bottles. One even charges a $2.99 small order fee on top of the $12.99 to ship one bottle. If you have some sort of ax to grind with Casemates, I suggest you get your facts straight.
@losthighwayz You’re right. I apologize. I didn’t mean it to come across as scathing. I should have read it over before posting it, advice I’ve given multiple times. Again, I’m sorry.
@ddeuddeg@losthighwayz
While the delivery wasn’t the most eloquent, facts are facts. The criticism of the price seems just a slight bit harsh in my opinion.
Many of us are very familiar with Pedroncelli and I’m certain the general consensus is this IS a steal.
This offer made me open up a 2014 vintage to see how it’s doing and it’s drinking beautifully. Saying I’m tempted to order this vintage would be a huge understatement, but I’m on a strict SIWBM in order to reduce my inventory.
My advice for anyone on the fence is to buy this and forget about it for a while. Sure, it’s enjoyable right out of the gate, but Pedroncelli is known for getting even better with age.
@kawichris650@losthighwayz I like the advice to people on the fence, but it’s so good right now that I could see some folks having trouble hanging on to it once they’ve tasted it.
@ddeuddeg hey no worries. I do appreciate your apology and it’s accepted. I don’t have a beef with CM nor am I trying to minimize the quality of Pedroncelli wines. I’ve been on here long enough to appreciate their wines.
All I was trying to point out was that in my opinion it is a good deal but nowhere near a steal especially when it’s a widely distributed zin (by Ped standards) and one has to purchase either 6 or 12 of the same wine (as opposed to previous mixed offers by Ped).
Wine woot and now CM were built on honest opinions about offerings that may differ but ultimately allow buyers to make decisions based on our feedback. That’s all I was trying to say.
Oh and you’re always welcome here and hope to see you guys sometime in the near future. Cheers!
@ddeuddeg@kawichris650 I’ve been around since the Woot days and am very familiar with Pedroncelli offers. I’m not sure why you would think it was a criticism of the price. It was simply an observation by me that while the price is a good one it’s not a steal given the wine is available on wine searcher for a similar price to the six pack. Has nothing to do with the value we all know Ped wines offer.
@ddeuddeg@kawichris650@losthighwayz I’ll just add that value, and therefore whether something is a “deal” or a “great deal” or even a “steal”, is in the eye of the beholder. I used to evaluate the deals here based on discount from MSRP, as many others do. So then what happens? Some wineries up their SRP to make it seem like a better deal regardless of whether the wine has improved or the open market would ever support those prices.
lost, I also read your initial comment as criticism of the offering price, and I’m glad you’ve cleared that up. It’s been too long since we’ve seen you guys. We need a proper SoCal gathering!
@ddeuddeg@losthighwayz
I must agree, that I do miss the mix red packages we used to get.
November 21st, 2020, for example. That was a holy grail of a mix package and exactly why I come here to CM!
For me, I don’t value necessarily on the savings to retail, but more for the honest conversation and convenience of getting quality wine in large quantities.
I went with a 6 pack here, as I tend to only order 12 bottles when it’s a mix of several varieties.
@ddeuddeg@kawichris650@klezman agree value is subjective
I see value in ped wines overall and this offer is no different. I just wouldn’t classify it as a steal when compared to what’s available out there price wise. However, it is a steal when you look at what you are getting compared to similar Zins from dry creek. Hope this makes sense
Opened up a 2018 Mother Clone yesterday, and
I was not terribly impressed.
Well…not so unimpressed that I didn’t order a case,
and SWMBO did really like it, but… Tonight it’s fabulous! (with plum tomatoes picked off my vines)
I thought this would be a sell-out…must be a million cases!
Well Wine David is doing quality work and it’s hitting my wallet. Case of Scott’s Zin arrived yesterday, got a couple two-packs of Kent’s offering (cases were gone) and now a case of the Mother Clone coming my way! I hope I don’t see any other “auto buys” for a while.
Cheers!

@pedroncellifam I love surprises! Thank you pedroncellifam!
@pedroncellifam
Sounds exciting!!!
@pedroncellifam
Ed?
Hopefully the all new-made-over-elements don’t affect the contents, or diminish these screaming deals we so eagerly await when you appear.
@pedroncellifam Gotta be Ed.
@pedroncellifam @rjquillin Looking forward to seeing what you’ve got up your sleeve! And it sounds like maybe a new Woot Cellars - erm, Casemates - wine may be coming?
@pedroncellifam
Might this be part of that new look?
@rjquillin that’d be one of the four!
@pedroncellifam
Can’t wait to see what you’ve done for the 007 and Wisdom. You still sourcing from Morris Fay?
@rjquillin big switch up on the package for those wines. Very elegant label.
@rjquillin we lost the Morris Day vineyard a decade ago.
@mikepav
Mr. Mommadeb says I dont have a drinking problem, I have a wine buying problem
@mikepav @TimW I missed a Rasmussen??!
@woopdedoo
https://casemates.com/forum/topics/kent-rasmussen-napa-valley-mixed-reds
@TimW @woopdedoo I guess I missed that too
@mikepav @woopdedoo It was a 24-hour Friday offer.
@kawichris650 @woopdedoo Such a memorable tour with a bunch of unknown friends! And, our friendships continue to this day!
@bahwm @kawichris650 @woopdedoo You guys need to find a reason to come back to SoCal!
Hard to go wrong with this, it’s always a crowd pleaser!
Very hot and humid in NFL right now, but this is one of my favorite zins! I buy this every time I have the opportunity and cannot pass this up.

I’m in the same boat as I just had a case and 1/2 case delivered yesterday. Went to buy the 6 bottles, but my finger slipped and hit the case button!
Looking forward to trying it, why not get a case?

I’m not understanding the “steal” part of this deal. A simple wine searcher skim shows at least 10 places selling this wine for under $15/bottle. Is it a fair price? Yes but not quite a steal even when you factor in shipping.
@losthighwayz Free shipping if you are a member.
@losthighwayz I just did a website search of one of our Twin Cities local family owned chains and their price is $23.99. So the $12.50 case price is screaming here. Cheers!
@cynthylee I was referring to wine searcher in general
Many reputable merchants have this under $15 without having to commit to six bottles
@ddeuddeg wow what was that? Why your scathing comment? Not like the person I remember welcoming into my home. I’m not even going to respond to you.
@losthighwayz You’re right. I apologize. I didn’t mean it to come across as scathing. I should have read it over before posting it, advice I’ve given multiple times. Again, I’m sorry.
@ddeuddeg @losthighwayz
My 02. cents.
@kawichris650 @losthighwayz I like the advice to people on the fence, but it’s so good right now that I could see some folks having trouble hanging on to it once they’ve tasted it.
Cheers!
@ddeuddeg @kawichris650 I’ve been around since the Woot days and am very familiar with Pedroncelli offers. I’m not sure why you would think it was a criticism of the price. It was simply an observation by me that while the price is a good one it’s not a steal given the wine is available on wine searcher for a similar price to the six pack. Has nothing to do with the value we all know Ped wines offer.
@ddeuddeg @kawichris650 @losthighwayz I’ll just add that value, and therefore whether something is a “deal” or a “great deal” or even a “steal”, is in the eye of the beholder.
@ddeuddeg @losthighwayz
@ddeuddeg @kawichris650 @klezman agree value is subjective
I see value in ped wines overall and this offer is no different. I just wouldn’t classify it as a steal when compared to what’s available out there price wise. However, it is a steal when you look at what you are getting compared to similar Zins from dry creek. Hope this makes sense
@ddeuddeg @kawichris650 @losthighwayz Once you clarified a few posts back, this is what I figured out you were saying, yes.
/giphy damp-tattered-voyage
I really had no choice.
/giphy reckless-exultant-asparagus
NE OH has a split
Thanks to each of my local Casemates gang.
ALL of you purchased a case and offered me some
BTW did I hear someone say BUY ALL THE PEDRONCELLI?!!
@ttboy23 I’m sure I read that somewhere!
@pedroncellifam
@ttboy23 we had a bottle last night you should just give in and get a case.
FOMO, but…must…resist!
@TimW
The temptation is REAL.
I opened a 2014 vintage and the wine is singing. Certainly not helping my efforts to resist buying.
BTW: I just had a bottle of the SH Zin that arrived yesterday. I was planning to give it some years, but it is drinking wonderfully right now.
@woopdedoo We agree over here as we are having it tonight as well
@woopdedoo Good to know…I’ll be trying it this weekend!
Opened up a 2018 Mother Clone yesterday, and
I was not terribly impressed.
Well…not so unimpressed that I didn’t order a case,
and SWMBO did really like it, but…
Tonight it’s fabulous!
Cheers!
@cynthylee Amen!
@cynthylee I bought the same. I just need to figure out where the next 16 bottles are going to fit.
Is this a RPM autobuy?! I miss those notifications!
Hell yeah, in at the buzzer for this one!
