Our Mother Clone is a classic ‘Dry Creek’ Zinfandel with aromas of ripe red berries with a touches of cinnamon, vanilla, and white pepper spice. Red cherry flavors combine with vanilla, licorice and warm baking spices. The berry-spice combination, so typical of Dry Creek Zin, includes a touch of pepper with the rounded finish which are a hallmark of our style.
Mother Clone Vineyard Sources
The Pedroncelli house is founded on Zinfandel. It was the first grape planted in the early 1900s, it was the first wine Giovanni made after Prohibition ended and it was also the first varietal we labeled under our name in 1947. Using the budwood from the mother vineyard to clone a second generation carries our vineyard story forward, echoing the generations of our family. The fruit from three generations of these “mother” vines are part of the blend as well as fruit from the Bushnell and Giovannoni vineyards.
Winemaking
It was a good growing season with a warm summer and few heat spikes in September. Grapes for the Mother Clone Zinfandel come mostly from the home ranch on the hillsides of Dry Creek. The grapes were picked the second week of September based on maturity and acidity levels. A high concentration of phenols and aromatics in this vintage. At the crushpad, destemmed grapes are transferred to a fermentation tank to cold soak for 48 hours and then is inoculated with selected yeast. Daily pump-overs and fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with delestage regimes are done for maximum phenolic extraction. Pressing follows and the new wine is transferred to storage tanks until barreled down. Twelve months of aging in American oak barrels develops additional complexity. The addition of Petite Sirah (9%) adds depth of color and brings structure to the wine.
Enjoy now or cellar for three to five years.

For nearly a century, the Pedroncelli family has been crafting exceptional wines in Sonoma County’s Dry Creek Valley. It all began in 1927 when John Pedroncelli, Sr. purchased a vineyard and a small winery west of Geyserville; two elements have remained unchanged since then - the exceptional place the Pedroncelli family farms their vineyards and their dedication to creating fine wines.
For nine decades, the Pedroncelli family has been producing wines of the highest quality, tradition and heritage. Their commitment to excellence and their family-run business make them a trusted source of great wines - enjoy them with confidence.

Dunno that these’ll get to you my Thanksgiving, but then again, the Holidays are just around the corner. Zins and Turkey/Tofurkey n all that. Something to keep in mind if you’re running low, or just like to party.
The look: Though a Zin, looks like a typical petite syrah, if there is such a thing, to me. Medium ruby. Got a couple pepper flakes of sediment. Fine with me.
The nose: Nice floral scents.
The taste:
Medium Jam. Medium Spice & cedar. Light oak. Medium lingering finish. It might sound boring, but it has a great structure that’ll go well with a fest celebrating whatever is socially acceptable in your domicile (#notcancelled).
Some white Peppercorn. Typical clay you can get in Zins.
The wrapup:
Drink or cellar. For casemates I expect this to be less than $20/bottle.
You can rearrange the letter of “pedroncelli mother clone” to spell out “Precedence Monolith Roll”. Do with that what you will.

I was excited and nerve wracked to get the email from Alice about this Lab Rat Opportunity. Why was I nervous? I was on the road and had to redirect the shipment. Did you all know that UPS can redirect to Advance Auto Parts stores? If not, now ya know! I got home Saturday and hit Advance for my pickup. Yesterday was another travel day as we made our way from sunny West Palm to Blue Ridge. So it was nice to have a bottle of wine to rat.
Enjoyed this with my family before dinner. As always with Pedroncelli, expect a nice bottle and cork. On PnP, the color is fantastic, a garnet. Agreed with @ecue, the color is more of a Syrah than a Zin. We agreed it was a dark garnet, with lots of legs.
The nose was muted at first but after a few swirls it opened up. Earthy with hints of raspberries and sour cherries. We also got some oak. A nice nose.
The taste is very smooth, this would go well with turkey if you could get it in time for Thanksgiving. It’s a medium bodied Zin, with some tart cherries and blackberries married with a hint of spicy pepper and rich earthiness. It was a fine preamble for a southern meal. My wife added that this wine is smooth enough to be enjoyed by many different palates.
All in all, another solid offering from Pedroncelli. Price is a bargain at the offering, so if you enjoy Zinfandel I’d stock up.
Identical offer to August , with “back in the day” pricing. They must have made a ton of this wine! Thank goodness I have two cases from the August offer tucked away, I can actually pass today. Otherwise auto buy. Highly recommended.
@danidani12 Yes, I opened one 2020 that I had from another offer last spring. Really good, just think it will be even better in a year. My note is that while the alcohol is higher than normal, the wine hides it well. Very balanced and enjoyable. I found a case of 2018 at a local store here, so we’ve been drinking through those before moving on to the 2020. Never had the 2019 for some reason.
@danidani12@wnance Glad I’ve got 10 bottles from the previous offer (shared 2 of the case) so I can easily resist the temptation of further overflowing my storage capability.
@danidani12 We drank a 2020 last night. This is in a great place, loved it. The almost 16% alc caught up with me a bit after a couple glasses but doesn’t show up (for me) is how the wine presents.
The Scott Harvey case just arrived today and I don’t honestly have the room for this but I cannot pass it up. I guess I have Casemates to thank/blame for realizing that I do in fact like Zinfandel.

Yeah, I was excited to see this offer. But I too have a whole case from the last offer. I’m drinking older ones, which are fantastic!
Blessings to all who worked to make this harvest happen. 2020 was a crazy time to live and work through.
