2022 Pedroncelli Courage Zinfandel, Faloni Vineyards, Dry Creek Valley
The Background
Dave and Dena Faloni are the neighbors behind Courage Zinfandel, a three-generation grape growing family located two miles west of the winery. While most Zinfandel in the valley is head-pruned, Dave has trained his vines on a trellis. He knows every quirk of the soil and every vine on their 24 acres, having farmed it all of his life.
The Vintage
The vintage of 2022 was influenced by low amounts of rain and was followed by a warm growing season, which sped up maturity while concentrating flavors and color. The grapes from this single vineyard were harvested on the first day of September, preserving the varietal flavors, aromatics, and natural acidity.
Winemaker Tasting Notes
The aromas of ripe red berries and baking spices introduce this wine. Full-bodied with a plump fruit palate of blackberry, boysenberry, cinnamon, vanilla, and toasted oak notes. Our single vineyard Zinfandel finishes with hints of white pepper laced through the lingering, lush fruit.

2022 Pedroncelli Endurance Estate Red Wine, Dry Creek Valley, Sonoma County
The Background
This is the third wine under our Single Vineyard Reserve line of wines, and with a name like Endurance, this has some staying power. This Super Tuscan-style wine is sourced from two estate vineyards and has a deep Sangiovese base of 70% with Cabernet Sauvignon balancing out the remainder. It combines the best qualities of both grapes in a complementary style.
The Vintage
The vintage of 2022 was influenced by low amounts of rain and was followed by a warm growing season, which sped up maturity while concentrating flavors and color. The grapes for this wine were harvested over the first and second weeks of September, preserving the varietal flavors, aromatics, and natural acidity.
Winemaker Tasting Notes
Delicate aromas of black cherry and herbs lead to tart cherry and orange zest flavors along with blackberry, toast, and earthy notes. Combined with balanced acidity and rounded tannins, this is a medium-bodied wine with depth and lasting flavor with a spicy zing on the finish.
Vineyard Source: Home Ranch Vineyard, East Side Vineyard
Location: Hillside and Bench, Dry Creek Valley
Vine Age & Farming: 27-30 Years, Single Arm Vertical Cordon Trellis
Soil: Pleasanton-Haire Complex, Yolo Sandy Loam

Barrel Aging: 18 months in neutral American Oak barrels for Sangiovese, 20 months in French Oak barrels for Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% new oak

2021 Pedroncelli Wisdom Cabernet Sauvignon, Dry Creek Valley
The Background
The land was purchased by Jim and John Pedroncelli in 1965 and is located on the western bench of Dry Creek Valley. Planted to Cabernet Sauvignon the same year, Pedroncelli Winery was the first to establish this variety here. The vineyard was replanted in 2002 with Clone 4, also known as the Mendoza Clone. It produces smaller, more compact bunches and brings deeper color and concentration as a result. 60 years of growing Cabernet in this soil and singular microclimate brings unparalleled Wisdom.
The Vintage
The vintage of 2021 was influenced by low amounts of rain and was followed by a warm summer, which sped up maturity as well as concentrated flavors and color. The grapes were harvested on September 17th, and as a result, the wine shows a rich concentration with intense varietal flavors and mild acids.
Winemaker Tasting Notes
Deep red-purple in the glass, this is a rich and full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas of blueberry, warm baking spices, and toast. The flavors of blueberry follow with plum, mocha, and touches of toasted oak notes. Framed by ripe tannins and woven throughout with medium acidity and long, silky tannins. With reserve-style complexity and depth, along with an additional year of bottle aging, this is a wine to enjoy now or age for another 5 or more years.

@losthighwayz@rjquillin CT tells me i got a 2014 Wisdom for $31 back in 2018. That was from Ed with an Ed discount at the Pedroncelli tasting room. I’m happy to pay $33 in the three pack today.
@losthighwayz I’m currently sipping on some Pedroncelli Brother’s Mark cab that got delivered this week which is drinking far above its price point. If my employment circumstance wasn’t so tenuous I’d be all over this offering. I’ve had enough Pedroncelli wines to say with certainty that this offering is a good deal on some really nice special occasion wine.
@losthighwayz@rjquillin By all means, please elaborate. I’ve purchased Pedroncelli wines since back in the woot wine days and (mostly) always considered them a good everyday drinker; great QPR at woot/casemate prices. Over the last few years, either because of competition and/or the pandering to the sub-par wine market, I’ve noticed the quality slipping and therefore have become very shy about pulling the trigger on any offering…especially a “premium” offering that has even more stringent competition. Give me your best, convincing argument…
@radiolysis@rjquillin good point but the wine market today is not what it was back then. I am able to find amazing deals on great producers without even trying these days so the $33 per bottle although attractive not a great QPR imo. Again, my opinion only.
@losthighwayz@radiolysis@rjquillin I have had the Wisdom Cab, 2016 I believe. That Cab is not the daily drinker we usually see here. It’s more like the higher end, $50-100 Cali Cabs. It is outstanding.
@losthighwayz I have to agree with this. I often my table wines with the Pedroncelli case offers… but …at this price point there is a lot of competition.
Can some rat prove to us that this is going to absolutely knock our socks off?
Can some rat prove to us that this is going to absolutely knock our socks off?
And I do have a lot of socks! Price might be good for premium CA wine, but living in Pacific Northwest, I know there are some excellent local wines I can find if I want to venture into this price range (which I rarely do).
Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs start to get good, and Washington Cabernets and Rhône blends can be great as well. And support the local winemakers!
@losthighwayz@radiolysis@rjquillin@Springbank note that the case price is more like $28.
Sure it’s not the standard Pedroncelli daily drinker but you shouldn’t be arguing that much over price when it’s nearly half off SRP. Even when SRP is largely fictional.
God grant me the wisdom to know I don’t need every Pedroncelli ever sold, the courage to pass up this offer, and the endurance to wait until they bring back the mead.
WE on the zin:

Fresh cherry, sage and cracked pepper aromas dominate the nose of this Zin, while the palate delivers rich tannin, zesty acidity and flavors of baked raspberry, caramel and cocoa powder. Drink this with roasted pork loin and cherries. — Tom R. Capo 9/1/25

90 points Jammy red fruits and juicy, mouthwatering acidity. A big, bold, fruit-forward wine from a hot, sunny appellation known for zinfandel. 5/25
Wine Review Online, still sippin’ zin:
94 points. This is sourced from the Faloni Vineyard a couple miles west of the winery, and it wears its proprietary name well, showing a ripeness level that may scare some away if they just look at the numbers. As is the case with the best Zinfandels, balance is the key whatever that ripeness level might be, and balance is well displayed here. Full extraction brings deep berry character, and a Priorat yeast strain was selected to keep that power intact while not losing prized pepper characteristics that make Zinfandel so food-friendly when well executed. There is no evident heat, and the clove and white pepper accents will keep you coming back for more. Nicely realized wine! Rich Cook 1/25
Zin making the rounds, Nittany Epicurean:
This wine is 100% zinfandel from Faloni Vineyard situated on the Western Valley Floor of Dry Creek Valley. Following fermentation, the wine was aged for 16 months in American oak barrels (40% new). It comes in at 15.9% ABV.
The wine showed a dark ruby color. Black cherry, raspberry preserves, currant, graphite and oak could all be found on the nose. Cherry, raspberry preserves, currant and mossy earth powered the rich palate followed by notes of vanilla and oak. The wine was full-bodied and exhibited good length along with soft tannins. It would pair very well with smoked brisket.

2022 Endurance blend…
93 points Suckling.
Aromas of blackberries, black cherries, licorice, dried herbs, cassia bark and spice. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and balanced acidity. The finish is polished and refined. A nicely constructed blend of 70% sangiovese and 30% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

Ripe and fleshy in feel, with a generously toasted frame around a mix of plum sauce and blackberry compote flavors. There’s a singed alder hint on the finish. Drink now through 2029. 585 cases made. James Molesworth 7/7/25
Dark ruby color. Aromas and flavors of leather, red cherry and cassis, dried herbs, and black olive and plum with a velvety, tangy, dry medium body and a warming, captivating, medium-length finish with notes of cassis, red and black cherry, clove and chai tea, and espresso beans and prunes with chewy tannins and light oak flavor. Dark, rich, and earthy with a nice herbal lift to the bold fruit character. 8/24

This Cabernet-Malbec blend presents a savory herbal edge along with aromas of currant, black plum and dried cherry on the nose. The palate is powerfully structured with flavors of blackberry jam, cherry, cedar shavings and tobacco with lots of drying tannin. Some years in the cellar will certainly help round out the edges. — Tom R. Capo 3/1/25
rws, the cab…
The 2021 Pedroncelli Wisdom Cabernet Sauvignon opens with an absolutely lovely aroma of succulent blackberry, black cherry and plum plus leather, licorice, baking spice, dried herbs, cedar, tobacco, espresso and more! It’s a fantastic start.
The wine tastes juicy, rich, big and uber-delicious! Deep, super concentrated and super flavorful the wine has great structure and plenty of aging potential. And even with the huge flavors it maintains its balance nicely. I especially love the addition of 13% Malbec to the blend, and it gets even better the longer it is open.
It ends dry, a bit dusty and grippy and very long on the lasting, savory finish. It was just as good on day 2. 11/1/25

The 2021 Pedroncelli Wisdom Cabernet is built like a tank. This wine showcases aromas and flavors of bold licorice, a blast of blackberries, and aromatic spices. Pair it with a well-spiced, oven-baked Porchetta. (Tasted: September 17, 2024, San Francisco, CA)

94 points. It has been said that if you ask for wisdom, you should expect trials that will teach you wisdom, and that you should know that it doesn’t come quickly. The Pedroncelli family has farmed the particular plot of land this wine is sourced from for nearly 60 years, replanting it to clone 4 Cabernet Sauvignon in 2002. The vines bring real concentration at around twenty years of age — when handled wisely of course — and that shows here, with deep color and intensity of black and blue fruit character. Malbec adds a savory note, and twenty months in barrel rounds everything out. It is ready to pop and pour, or cellar up to 7 years for full integration. Contains 13% Malbec.

Annnd thats it, well actually probably not, these guys sure get their wines out in front of the golden palates… whew… but you get the gist
Labrat here reporting for duty. Unfortunately I am doing so without the wine and therefore will be fairly useless. Got the email on Tuesday that wine was coming my way and would be up for sale on the 12th. Assuming that date is correct and one of these wines is the one I am supposed to taste it is sitting in sunny California according to UPS with a delivery date of the 13th. Unfortunate for sure especially with wines of this price. If by some miracle it shows up this afternoon I will post my impressions.
I do have a question. We all know the effects of extreme heat damaging a wine. How about extreme cold? My UPS driver usually leaves the warehouse around 7 and gets to my house late afternoon. Given that temps are going to be in the single digits all day long here that seems like a long time to be sitting on the truck. Anything to fear? How long would you let it sit before opening?
