Layered aromas of Bing cherries and ripe, spiced strawberries are enveloped in silk. The aromas lifting out of the glass are enticing and carry through in the mouth. It’s pure Pinot Noir. This estate wine has a superb balance of fruit, oak, and a sense of place from Edna Valley. Enjoy now or hold until 2027.
Background Notes
Vineyard designated, limited production, Estate wine
Two-acre vineyard, sustainably farmed
Made in the Burgundian style, this is an elegant, fruit-forward, and balanced wine that captures the essence of the Pinot Noir grape.
Piedra Creek Winery was conceived atop a small knoll in the heart of the MacGregor Vineyard overlooking the beautiful Edna Valley of San Luis Obispo, California. In 1984 Piedra Creek Winery became the smallest bonded winery in the Edna Valley, if not the state of California, originally producing only a couple hundred cases of estate-sourced Chardonnay. The ultra-small batch wines quickly gained notoriety. The grapes used would not come from a selected vineyard, nor from blocks within vineyards, but rather from only the best sections of the 55-acre Chardonnay vineyard. The result: only the best fruit would be used to make the finest wines possible.
Owners Romeo “Meo” Zuech and his wife Margaret are legends for introducing grape varieties from the Alto Adige, Italy region to San Luis Obispo County and Edna Valley. Together they planted Gewürztraminer, Lagrein, Dornfelder, Marzamino, and Teroldego. Margaret and Meo were the first to bring the Lagrein grape to the United States from Meo’s homeland in Bolzano, Italy.
Meo will also be remembered for his legacy in the aerospace industry. He was a specialist in metallurgy and developed six metal alloys used in building multiple NASA space vehicles in the early 1970s and 1980s. The alloys he developed were used in the Apollo 11 Mission and moon landing, and played a key factor in returning the space shuttle back to earth.

Grateful to be a lab rat again after a long absence!
I enjoyed this wine. Out of the bottle (screwcap) it was very dense, dark ruby/purple in color and much darker than most “Burgundian style” Pinot Noirs I’ve had - definitely lacking the pretty translucence you’d expect from Burgundian, it’s definitely more dense and opaque and if I’d not been led one way or the other, I’d say the color and aroma are more CA style Pinot, less OR or FR.
Still… there’s a hint of alcohol on the nose, mingling with very ripe strawberry and cherry… not much in the “gamey” or funky range, (again, more CA, less Burgundy) nor anything herbaceous or woody or really anything but the fruit. The nose is pleasant and inviting and maybe more of a Gamay nose and less funk of Pinot Noir.
The alcohol is also present on the first sip and although the bottle says “13.9”, both myself and my sipping partner, a 30-year wine industry person, shook our heads and said no way. but whatever. the palate is nice, very rich and fruity with layers of ripe cherries. There’s not much besides ample fruitiness to add a much complexity, taste-wise - like again the barnyard funk I like in Burgundian PN, or vanilla or cinnamon etc - but this still is a very rich, enjoyable and easy drinking wine. We had it with pork chops and a Moroccan-spiced couscous and it was perfect with the spice. I tasted it again this morning (don’t be judge-eyy!!) and felt my notes are spot on, plus there were some blacker fruit notes, more depth . It will definitely hold thru another meal tonight (if it makes it to that point)

@ttboy23 Honestly this sounds like a fine example of this style of PN from the region. But I’m overloaded with recent purchases, and for PNs I tend to like the dirt/forest-floor character you find mostly from the NorthWest. It seems this Summer has seen a lot of Central Coast (and nearby) offerings. Not that there’s anything wrong with that but generally not a region I look to for reds.
@pmarin Agreed
even though I enjoy the light and fruit fwd style Pinots, I am FULLY STOCKED right now.
One could dream of winning the lottery
but I dream of receiving just one bottle of this Piedra Creek to sip
