The deep ruby color foretells the rich fruit experience to follow. Loaded with bramble berries and black cherry, the flavors end on a spicy note with vanilla and white pepper. The silky tannins round out the experience, adding a lengthy finish
Food Pairing Suggestion
This petite sirah pairs exceptionally well with grilled rib-eye steak, braised short-ribs, and barbecued chicken covered with a tangy barbecue sauce.
In 1848, a national sensation made its way to California, this sensation was later to be known as the California Gold Rush. During this time, prospectors deployed many means in their search for gold, from pickaxes to dynamite. The sensation lasted about seven years, this culminated in a great deal of migration to California and the shaping of many future industries. This era is the inspiration for Powder Keg Winery.
Powder Keg Winery was created as an homage to the time period that shaped the state we know as California, the Gold Rush. Our goal is to deliver explosive quality wines.

Bottle and stemless glass arrived days before the offer date. That allowed this Petite Sirah to rest on the kitchen counter for a day or two )about 71-73 degrees. Heavy green bottle and the composite cork was lightly stained upon pop and pour.
My usual disclaimer since Covid: my senses of taste and smell are not 100% (although much improved with some bizarre skewing here and there). Since Covid, I have been drinking mostly white wine, having been a Cab, Merlot, and Pinot drinker mostly for many years.
Slight wisps of alcohol initially with some blue fruit following on the first swirl. Thin legs, deep and dark red cherry color but translucent when held up to the light.
First taste was blueberry and cherry with alcohol undertones. nicely meshed and although I do not know how long this was aged in cask or bottle, this is well balanced and a pleasure to drink. A short to medium finish with medium tannin/acidity complementing the fruit upfront and briefer mid-palate.
the next glass after an hour opened (no decanting), was similar, slightly smokey with no discernible oak or pepper, the finish lengthened.
2nd day:
The fruit aroma and taste has given way to mostly alcohol, some astringency and tannin more pronounced mid-palate, with a tannic yet complex medium finish. Still, a pleasant wine to have with food (in this case, pan seared pork chop) but not as fruity as Day 1.
A couple of hours later sitting in glass, a marked change. Black plum emerged mid-palate and held on to the end and balanced well with the acidity. The alcohol mellowed and balanced well.
This is a lighter Petite Sirah (medium bodied) and not as complex or typical of other Petit Sirahs I have had. Not as hearty or spicy, but there are a few things going on here. I’m not sure how long this will hold up or age, and I suggest drinking now rather than holding for too long. This would make a great mid-week red with pork or red meat prepared simply.
I couldn’t find much information on the Internet after sampling, other than prior vintages averaged approximately $20. I would say this would be a nice buy if the Casemates offer comes in under $15.
Much thanks to Alice and David providing me this opportunity to try something different! Cheers!
P.S. I am looking at the offer now, and I’d say this is a great case buy!

Hello!
Happy to be a Lab Rat for 2017 Powder Keg Petite Sirah!
Thank you Alice for sending it my way to Minnesota.
The wine arrived mid afternoon and I was surprised to find the bottle really cold and the glass (Thank you Casemates) frosty as I pulled it from the box. I was concerned it had been frozen.
It sat unopened on our kitchen counter for 2 days until we opened it and shared it with friends.
Upon opening there was a dark fruit/berry aroma.
There were six of us tasting with an assortment of meat, cheese, and vegetable appetizers along with a big platter of spicy Nachos.
I wish I could say that we all loved the wine. The comments were : “Thin”, “one dimensional” “no complexity” “a little sweet” “seems flat” “it has tannins at the finish” and “I am only tasting blueberries”.
We all agreed that this would be a great wine to bring to large gatherings as it is very drinkable and most people would find it acceptable. I do wonder if something happened in the transport from CA to MN.
There was enough leftover for a glass the second day and I noticed the alcohol burn that was missing from the previous day.
Looking at the Casemates price one can’t go wrong ordering a case for those holiday parties.
