On the nose, notes of ripe cherry in aged cedar and caramel spice. The palate is light and fresh, but anchored with some weight. Fresh strawberry and cinnamon on the palate. A good Pinot for the winter months.

About The Winery
QUELL /kwell w. I. To bring order and balance to chaos
Life is chaotic. There is life in the vineyards, in the tank, and in the barrel. Through painstaking, incremental refinements, we quell the chaos. We’ve cultivated a wine that embraces its unique character by nurturing it through each stage in its life. The end product is a balanced, mature vintage that we’re proud to call Quell.

We received the golden ticket email from Alice and received the 2105 Quell Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir.
This evening is a tight schedule so notes are brief. Will revisit and update tomorrow.
Color is clear and a beautiful light burgundy hue that makes me anticipate a real treat…
Nose: red fruit, lavender, hint of vanillla
Pop-n-pour: Dark cherries, floral, hint of strawberry. Smooth tannins. No hint of alcohol. This is just delicious!
We’re in for certain. Will revisit with time tomorrow.
I was lucky enough to rat this wine. The dinner menu wasn’t really red-friendly, so this was drunk after dinner by itself.
It had the lovely dark velvety burgundy that I expected, but the nose was HUGE on this. I de-corked and ran upstairs for something- and I could smell the opened bottle from across the house. The nose was heavy in wild strawberries & red fruits - and absolutely no alcohol. This wine didn’t need time & air to evaporate off any initial burn. It was drinkable from the get-go.
Early sips were full of red berries, but I caught a notable and distinct tartness that reminded me of tart red cherries. A good 90 minutes later, and a few blueberries joined the party, and that tart cherry evolved into slightly underripe blackberry. I caught a very, very faint herbal note toward the end.
This was one of the best balanced wines I’ve tried. The tannins & alcohol were subtle but were definitely there when I thought about them. The bottle was open for a good 4 hours, and during the entire time, nether the tannins nor the alcohol seemed to fade or get weird. It was drinkable from the moment the bottle was open and throughout the rest of the evening.
The one thing that threw me off was the tart note. Pinot Noirs aren’t exactly sugary, but this tartness was something I haven’t experienced in a Pinot. I was worried that it might fade with time and air, but it stuck around, and that made me thoroughly happy. It was element that made it intriguing. I kind of wonder if the wine would have been TOO well balanced - maybe to the point of being boring - without the tart note.
I would love to try a bottle of this with ribs or maybe a big burger. Or by itself again.
Just ordered a case, so excited! Have had my wine buying on hold for almost a year and my cellar has dwindled to only a few cases. I’m down to my last bottle of Marshal Davis, and this sounds like it will be similarly enjoyable. Hoping to see a good deal on some white for the summer come up soon!
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: tax and shipping are not included in savings calculations).
2015 Quell Pinot Noir - $70 = 31.81%
@losthighwayz - you may well be right…but not always a bad thing looking for daily drinkers as opposed to wines for aging…SWMBO likes Pinot, and likes DD Pinot without any sweetness…so this may make sense.
@losthighwayz Not sure why you think it might be a restaurant-only bottling. Could you elaborate?
And agreed with rpm that some of those can be great values.
@klezman@losthighwayz My first impression was similar to lost’s. Some type of on-premise only or private bottling. Just a feel. There are other vintages of this wine
Tempted by this (despite having too much wine!) as enjoyed the 2015 Stewart Cellars Pinot Noir (Goldrock Ridge, Clone 777) offered on here almost exactly 4 years ago!
@ctmariner@karenhynes@Winedavid49
Not sure what is up. I see Illinois has now been added to available states in the front page. But when I try to order I am denied. Any clarification?
Ok, first it would not accept my debit card so I tried a credit card. Now it says they don’t deliver to Illinois? What is going on? I’m trying to order a case please
I am absolutely not a fan of Pinot Noir…
However, I wanted to broaden my horizons and the Rats were so positive, so I bought some.
Well, I tried one, and it’s good! With some decant time.
Glad I got it, and perhaps now I can taste Pinots with less bias.
Thanks Rats.
I still have a few of these laying down and found that the wine is now seeping up the cork so may be time to drink these in the near future. A little funk on opening but soon blows off and is still pretty good (IMHO)

@dak52 Ha, ha, h… fortunately the word “few” is indefinite in my household/basement/“cellar”

Feels like a direct to restaurant bottling from Stewart

@losthighwayz @rpm agree, trigger pulled

@ctmariner nice, I thought it sounded familiar
Sounds tasty but no IL shipping. Bummer.
@karenhynes @winedavid49 May be worth checking if this ships to IL as the previous Stewart offer did but that was 4 years ago!
@ctmariner @Winedavid49
Yeah, I know I’ve ordered from them in the past…
@ctmariner @karenhynes @Winedavid49
Not sure what is up. I see Illinois has now been added to available states in the front page. But when I try to order I am denied. Any clarification?
@ctmariner @gtcharlie @karenhynes @Winedavid49 same for me I checked all day today since IL was added no ability to order then sold old.
A well balanced pinot noir, according to rattage?
I’m in, mostly because my wife loves pinot noir and we do need more of this varietal in our cellar.

I’m down to share with any PDX mates
@CruelMelody I would take up to 6. I live in SW (Hillsdale).
@jfuruno great I’m glad to split the case! I think we’ve spilt over before, I like near the Freddie’s on ne Broadway
We have so much wine, but are low on pinot and couldn’t resist!

@jmruru
are you 21 and does casemates know that you are?
yes,I have purchased many, many times
@jmruru I see others were also having difficulty here
I’ll see if anyone is in support to attempt to untangle and confirm IL is a good ship-to state.
@rjquillin I still can not. Thanks for helping out!
@jmruru
This may take awhile, don’t forget to check back later.
Rats got me…

Also trying to order in IL. No luck
@2pac bumped up the request priority; check back in an hour or so.
@2pac @rjquillin
Looks like cases are sold out now anyhow.
@2pac @rjquillin looks like Illinois is about to be a go. stand by.
@2pac @rjquillin @Winedavid49 but now the case is sold out…so sad
@2pac @rjquillin
@Winedavid49 - Can you wave your magic wand and turn some 3-packs into cases?
@2pac @jmruru @ctmariner @karenhynes
I’m told IL is now good to go
@2pac @jmruru @karenhynes @Winedavid49
Any chance for special handling cases for the unlucky ones that were locked out?
@2pac @jmruru @karenhynes @rjquillin @Winedavid49
In the same boat. Any chance of still ordering a case in Illinois or has that boat sailed?
but now the case is sold out. so sad
Wish I could have been in for a case tried several times
