Lemon/lime citrus with tropical notes on the nose leads into a sleek focused palate of fruit and baked bread.
Vintage Notes
2019 began with a warm, wet spring and bud break commenced on schedule in April. A cool spell of weather in June around bloom naturally modulated fruit set, lowering yields. The late spring and summer were warmer than average but lacked notable heat spikes, allowing for steady vine growth and development during the growing season through véraison, which took place in mid-August. A cooling trend starting in early September slowed ripening at the final moments, allowing for additional hang time and flavor development while keeping the fruit in the perfect balance until harvest began in mid-September. The 2019 wines are marked by vibrant fruit flavors, age-worthy structure, and food-friendly acidity.
Vineyard Information
Multiple high-quality sites throughout the valley contribute to a well-balanced palate and complex nose. We use multiple sites with different aspects and elevations to create the best representation of Oregon Chardonnay. This provides the tools necessary to build wines of complexity and nuance.
Winemaking Notes
3-5 days cold soak, dependent upon vineyard, small lot fermentation using multiple yeasts for layered complexity, rounded out with barrel time and French oak contact.
Established in historic Dundee, Oregon, in 1993 in Willamette Valley and Dundee Hills AVA’s. Duck Pond wines are organically farmed, hand-harvested, and artfully crafted, achieving 90 point scores or higher in most recent vintages produced by our winemaker, Julia Cattrall. Our vision is to produce quality wines that express the region’s purest, most natural form, just as mother nature intended.
In 2020, we produced the first Natural Path Production Wines, Certified by the Clean Label Project. 2019 Raia Oregon Chardonnay - $25 = 22.72%
2019 Chardonnay (Raia) by The Great Oregon Wine Company, Dundee, Oregon
White gold color. Out of the bottle, aromatic nose of honeysuckle and ripe cantaloupe overlay a rocky leather backdrop. Oregon? Check. Clean. Crisp. Nice. Moving on…
Body makes a soft suggestive introduction with a silky, viscous mouth feel right up front. Cantaloupe moves forward slightly followed by a thin crisp citrus zest. Rocky minerality catches the neutral palate a little off guard. By the third sip, everything adjusts nicely. This is Oregon we’re talking about. I absolutely expect this and have come to look forward to it. An honest wine always has a sense of place. Bone dry. Something elevates the fruit slightly. If it is oak, it is not noticeable. A touch of a slight bitter emerges towards the back as the lips are slowly rendered warm, slightly waxy if not dry.
This is a good Chardonnay even non-Chardonnay drinkers will enjoy. It is clean, minimalist in execution, well made and approachable. A great Chardonnay for all to enjoy. Casual daily sipper? Absolutely! Nicely done!
At $84.99 for a case of 12 bottles, it’s a head scratching steal!
@kaolis it’s a tough characteristic to describe. Definitely a crushed rocks, mineral dirt, old wood vibe. Not as pronounced as most Oregon wines. As opposed to say Sonoma which typically shows a mushroom or damp forest floor leathery essence.
@albany14us yes, bitter. It’s terriary. Like a bitter cola but of mineral origins. I find this is typical of most Oregon wines. It’s faint but there. Lends good contrast on the finish.

Interesting fermentation notes - me thinks this was taken from their reds perhaps?
