Dark and intensely deep in color, this powerful wine has layered aromatics of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry compote, allspice and bay leaf coupled with more savory notes of beef bouillon and hoisin. The palate follows suit in its dark brooding nature with a full body, dusty tannins, and a slate-like mineral texture.

“These are some of the most distinctive Rhône-variety wines in Santa Barbara.” - Antonio Galloni, Wine Critic - Vinous
“Refugio” (pronounced re - foo - hee - yo) means refuge in Spanish.
Our family vineyard is an idyllic refuge, tucked away from the hustle of daily life.
The Refugio Ranch wines story began with Kevin Gleason planting the Refugio Ranch Vineyard in 2006 in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. Kevin, along with his son Max, built the Refugio Ranch brand from scratch. It was the mission of the Gleason Family to craft wines of exquisite character, that would embody the soul of this unique corner of the earth. Years later Kevin’s daughter, Callie, joined the family wine business along with her husband Matthew, the two of them leading the sales team.
Refugio Ranch encompasses two distinct terroirs. Half of the planted acreage is nestled into the north face of the Santa Ynez Mountains. The north-facing aspect of these slopes, coupled with heavier, clay based soils, create a cooler environment than the neighboring vineyards in the eastern Santa Ynez Valley. These slopes are planted predominantly to red varietals. We call this area “The Bowl.” The other half of our planted acreage is located in the flats along the banks of the Santa Ynez River. These vineyards are more exposed and planted in sandy, alluvial soils. These “River Flats” are planted to a mix of red and white varietals.
Refugio Ranch is truly a family owned and operated business. Borrowing from Old World traditions of passing land and passion down from one generation to the next. We work on the ranch, we play on the ranch - always with the knowledge that we are merely stewards of the land in the course of its long history.

2016 Refugio Ranch Vineyards Petite Sirah - $60 = 27.26%
From a mountainous property that’s the only vineyard on the southern side of the Santa Ynez River comes this rugged, rustic and brawny bottling. Nearly opaque in the glass, it begins with aromas of black currant, peppercorn and tar. The palate is structured with chunky tannins and shows cassis, fudge and loamy soil flavors, with a smoked coffee finish. MK 7/1/19
Hi all - this is quintessential Petite Sirah - but we don’t over do it with the tannin. You really get to taste the fruit here which is tough to do on Petite. The secret is a co-ferment with our Malvasia, a wine some of you all have had here!
@RefugioRanch Co-fermented with Malvasia? Interesting! Is that for co-pigmentation like the Syrah/Viognier co-ferment? Or is there something else you’re working on for it?
I had a 2-Day Air bottle show up from UPS today. Thought it might be a belated rat bottle for this wine, but it is not. Sorry! Still looking forward to see if rats appear.
I got my packages today and was pleasantly surprised with a single bottle delivered along with my order of the WineSmith Dessert wines.
Refugio Ranch vineyards Petite Sirah.
I hadn’t had a Petite Sirah that I thoroughly enjoyed in a while (last few bottles of this varietal I’ve had were extremely lacking in complexity).
Knowing that most likely this wine was going to require some serious oxygen, I grabbed a decanter and poured half of the bottle in for my wife and I to enjoy with dinner. The color of this wine is a deep purple, typical for a PS. I chilled to about 63F prior to opening. Cork was in great condition. (I opened using my new Casemates Wine Key!!). I poured a small amount right away to gather 1st impressions: Lots of alcohol on the nose, definitely calling for more time to open up. I could gather a hint of blue fruit, almost Blueberry like but then the alcohol hit me with the tannins and a bit of spice could be picked up towards the finish. After the wine opened up (45 minutes in) this wine really showed up to the party. Full bodied, the blue fruit tasted like Creme De Cassis, lingered around toward an earthy finish, displaying balanced acidity. Our menu for dinner was Pan seared Chipotle Salmon with Teriyaki Broccoli with figs, and apple slaw. The wine didn’t pair all too well with the spice of the fish, but went very well with the broccoli. This wine would pair extremely well with lamb and venison, as well as steak. The balanced acidity would cut right through fatty cuts.( I kept thinking of rack of lamb with Thai Basil Chimichurri while sipping on this wine). My wife was making Tiramisu for tomorrow (Xmas Eve), and the wine went well with the richness of the dessert as well.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this wine, and will have and update after I finish the rest. After having had some Petite Sirah efforts in the 10-20 dollar range lately to great disappointment, I’d price this in the 30-40 dollar range at least for the quality of the wine and complexity displayed.
I opened the bottle earlier this evening, and the aroma let me know that it was going to be excellent. (Before you read on, I should say that I just ordered the three-bottle option before coming here to write this up.)
Upon pouring, it was a beautiful, dense purple, and I took a quick sip before setting the glass back to rest. Even freshly poured, it’s excellent, and met its match with lamb, and sliced red potatoes. Petite Sirah is one of my favorites, alongside Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah.
This is a solid wine, and worth at least double the price ($20 per bottle at the three-bottle price). There’s no bitter aftertaste (which can happen with lesser wines), and it’s just perfect for this time of year.
Are the deliveries dates accurate lately under UPS - if I order then I need to receive by 15th at the very latest . Any chance it will be delivered earlier?
@klezman thanks for feedback - I had to Google ymmv! I think it applies as I am on East Coast! Trying to to decide if to risk a case as it sounds good!!

We have their Nectar de Refugio and quite like it. But dessert wine tells me precious little about their dry wines. But I’m listening.
@klezman
As, it seems, are many others…

@RefugioRanch thanks for the info, sounds interesting!
@klezman It is mainly for aromatics and flavor profile. The rich dark red of Petite Sirah is virtually unchanged. We call this one the abyss.
@RefugioRanch - could you comment on a recommended drinking window? Thanks!
Waiting for rat report but @rpm or any other casemates in lower fairfield county in CT interested in splitting a case?

@RefugioRanch, you ought to persuade @Winedavid49 to make a Casemates offering of the Syrah sometime in the next few months.
We are RF club members and enjoy Kevin and his staff. We haven’t opened a 2016 yet but like The ‘15s.
Great job lab rats. In for a case.

Are you sure this can’t be shipped to Minnesota? MN is almost always on the list.
@glennfuller0 You can ask the winery! @RefugioRanch
Sounds delicious!

Anyone in Bay Area wanna split a case?
@RefugioRanch are you unable to ship to Minnesota? We’re rarely excluded on CaseMates offers. I’d really like to order this one, it looks great.
Case ordered. Will drop some with Dad. Hmm will have to take two Wine Vallets to Minnesota next trip
Love me some PS!!!

I second the MN request… office split left wanting!

Opened a bottle of this last night - delicious!
This has to be one of my most favorite wines. Please another crack at this. I’m down to my last 2 bottles.
@PaleMongo I agree - I picked up another 6 bottles when it was on WTSO recently even though it was $16 a bottle - still good value!
@PaleMongo Let me add an “amen” to this. I just drank my last bottle a few days ago, and I’d be happy to buy more.
