The Vineyard
The del Barba vineyard is in the town of Oakley, within the San Francisco Bay AVA, an area that encompasses a historic California wine growing region. Planted in the late 1800s in the sandy banks of the Bay Delta, Tom del Barba is the fourth-generation farmer who tends these organically-farmed 135-year-old Carignan and Mourvèdre vines. The climate is moderated by the cool evenings enjoyed by proximity to where the San Francisco Bay meets the Sacramento River Delta. According to Aaron Pott, the del Barba vineyard allows him to “fulfill all of his Rhône and southern Italian fantasies at the same time.”

Quick and dirty tonight, got this in plenty of time, but the only other highlight of my last 3 weeks besides this bottle of wine has been that I didn’t need rabies shots, so that’s my mindset. Wow, sorry for the run on sentence. This is a 2017 Rose, Crown in Shadow, love the art on the bottle, not that it affects what’s inside, but that’s kind of the point of the picture, so well done you.
Screw cap, stored upright for 24 hours after shipping at 55 degrees, initial nose was a little tight, was too chilled, but getting some ? Peach/cherry, more stone fruit than strawberry/flower. Nice vibrant pink in the glass. Bright acidic mouthfeel, more citrus after the alcohol, not sweet. Bouquet is opening up when warm. Had my sister come over for barbecue. It didn’t do badly with the ribeye, maybe not a fair expectation for a Rose, but the acidity decently cut the fatty meat. It was better with the grilled asparagus and the roasted garlic baby potatoes. Sister said bright, she thought was sweet, but I disagree. I think she’s tasting some fruit, not residual sugar, but would be interested to hear from the Vinter what the RS is. It did not, however pair well with the S’mores. It would do much better with anything citrus. I found myself wishing I had made angel food cake with a strawberry/blueberry/lemon juice compote to have with it. This is NOT a subtle porch pounder, it also is has a more expressive taste in the mid 60s temp range. This would be a good buy @ $12-15/bottle or less to my taste.

Yay! I got the golden Lab Rat ticket/e-mail. This time I’m doing it by the book – food pairing, systematic tasting approach – the works. Wine delivered mid-day today while I’m at work – ask the daughter to chill and send a picture – it’s Rosé, and I’m not a Rosé person, sigh. Always willing to give it a try though, and in this case, I was rewarded.
Husband & I paired it with a Spanish goat cheese (Mitica – Murcia Curado from Whole Foods) to start; this turned out to be a great choice; it married with the wine perfectly. The wine is also good on its own – we kept adding just a little more to our glasses, even though I wanted to save some for dinner.
For this Rosé, the appearance in the glass is clear, pale to medium intensity, orange/pale salmon in color.
On the nose, the condition is clean, medium intensity. Strawberry, honeydew, rose petal.
On the palate, it’s a dry wine, medium acidity, light to medium body. We were tasting strawberry, apricot, watermelon and some peach. Medium to long finish.
Later we paired it with a shrimp salad roll that had lemon, tarragon, parsley, black pepper – this worked well with the wine as well, but less pepper would have been better. We went through the bottle pretty quickly – it was that good.
I really liked this wine – a good summer drinker and an auto-buy at this price point, definitely adding it to the extra wine rack.
The rats are out it looks like! Thanks to all 'mates for the opportunity to sniff out a bottle. I’ll preface this by saying we don’t drink a ton of rosé but drinking more as we spend more time in warmer climes, and do not take it super seriously. Currently on deck for us is Bedrock (mourvedre), Kutch (pinot), Pedroncelli (zinfandel), Chateau Ste Michelle (syrah) and a smattering of onesies from Provence. Also I know zero about this wine and kept it that way until we were done tasting.
Opened straight out of the refrigerator. We (myself and lovely bride) followed for about three hours, nothing left for day two.
Salmon in color? Fruity/subtle nose.
Taste, I’m picking up cherry, she’s picking out citrus/grapefruit. She also gets nervous doing this so her other comments are bright/fresh/not sweet. I’m no pro either, but my guess was mourvedre which appears to be at least partially correct not knowing the percentages here.
Earthy on the dusty side. Dry. No perceptible oak. Nicely balanced, good acid. Good depth of flavor and fruit particularly mid-palate. This is leaning towards the food friendly side of the spectrum and not a gulper. Finish tart and somewhat short but nicely done all in all. Picked up some weight and depth as it warmed up/opened up but pretty consistent notes for the short time we enjoyed it.
If I had to compare to any of my current drinkers it lends itself toward the 2017 Pedroncelli in style and mouthfeel.
