2021 Rubidoux Ridge Malbec, Fiddletown, Amador County
Rubidoux Ridge Malbec is grown on a west-facing slope varying from 1900 ft to 2000 ft in elevation. Our Malbec has a medium red color (not as inky) due to the addition of some estate Sangiovese to add acidity and bright fruit. It has a pleasant nose and flavors of bright red cherry fruit with a hint of tobacco. It is a nice inviting wine with a bit of a sweet edge on the mid palate and finish which pulls in a lot of red fruit flavors. A good food wine which would pair well with steak tartare or other red meats.

2021 Rubidoux Ridge Petite Sirah, Fiddletown, Amador County
Rubidoux Ridge Petite Sirah is grown on a west-facing slope varying from 2100 ft to 2000 ft in elevation. Our Petite Sirah has a deep inky color with good clarity and prominent legs. Its nose is earthy and woody. It has long bright raspberry fruit flavors with hints of chocolate. The tannins are sharp and crisp, much like Cabernet Sauvignon. It’s amazing bright and dark cherry berries just explode in your mouth as you sip this.

We have been farming our vineyard and developing our land for the last 10 years and know what it takes to produce good fruit for wine. Let us share with you! Between our uniquely crafted wine selection and our beautiful vineyard grounds, you’re sure to enjoy a break from city life. We agree with A.D. Posey – everyday that we farm, we must “take a deep breath. Inhale peace. Exhale happiness.”
We bought the 75 acres of land that Rubidoux Ridge Vineyard is situated on after my father passed away. The name Rubidoux came from the founder of St. Joseph, Missouri, where my father met my mother during WWII. The Rubidoux Hotel in St. Joe had a treasure chest for children that ate all their chicken pot pie. Forever this place stuck with me.

Never had a Grande Sirah, but i do like Petite Sirah. Cue the laugh track…
Hello! I’m here to tell you about the 2021 Rubidoux Ridge Petite Sirah. And not about life of Joseph Rubidoux or histories of western fur trading outposts-turned-Pony Express terminus with street names reflecting his many children.
This is a big wine, no doubt about it. It’s tobacco, and plum skin, with tannins and acid for days. Minutes of length in the mouth, but don’t spill any because it’s gonna stain.
When i messaged my Casemate case mate about getting this rat bottle i could only really say “It’s intensely fruity and overwhelmingly dry”. I’m on day number two of the bottle with no change in my mind. This is a paradox and i really do enjoy it.
The tobacco is earthiness mixed with warmth. Deep rich thick stout beer. But also a little zip of violet, flowers. Like a Grenache was turned up to 24. For fruit – electrified plum skin. Zippy, red, vibrant. It’s almost hard to crack below that because it’s just so much. Some cedar, some “green”.
It paired with some pepper bacon burgers with tots great, so probably not a go-to for a sipper. It needs something to cling to and play off of.
Now on day two it’s a little more subtle, so likely could go years. It does already have a lot of sediment on the bottle, again not surprising since this has the construction of a behemoth.

Rubidoux Ridge Malbec & Petite Sirah - $60 = 25.00%
I already ordered a case, but I’d still love to see a rat about the Malbec. I’m hoping we can taste that mountainside terroir within it! I loved the Rubidoux Ridge Sangiovese and Barbera, so it didn’t take a lot of time for me to be in for this case.
@user33071884 And yeah, big, bold Malbecs grown on high elevation with thick grape skins and small stressed grapes are a favorite style of mine. Fingers crossed that this touches a bit of that!
Hi Everyone,
John and Marianne came to me with a bottle each of these wines to taste with them when they knew they were going to offer them on Casemates. I greatly enjoyed both of them. I took them home and Jana and I enjoyed them over a number of days with dinner. Both exhibit good varietal character, good extraction and are well made wines. I’ve been buying grapes from the vineyard over the past 6 years. Vermentino, Barbera and Petite Sirah. A lot of the Petite Sirah has found its way into my Mt. Selection and J&S Reserve Syrah. This high elevation Fiddletown vineyard is one of Amador County’s great vineyards. Cheers, Scott

Rubidoux Ridge Malbec & Petite Sirah - $60 = 25.00%
By now y’all know that the Malbec was awarded Silver and the Petite Sirah awarded Bronze at a relatively recent Foothill Wine Fest
fwiw

That was in 2023, the same year we bottled these wines. Both benefited from more bottle time, especially the Petite Sirah.
