2016 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Syrah, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Varietal mouth-filling fleshy texture with bright red fruit. Light French oak with flavors of jam and cherry cola.
Produced in the drinkable fruit-forward and rich style. Aged 32 months in French oak cooperage to develop a well-rounded wine with firmly structured tannins for delicious drinkability.
Vineyard/Vintage Notes
100% grown in the mountainous vineyards of Amador County. The steep rocky volcanic slopes of this Sierra-mountain terrain represents well Amador County’s ability to produce world-class Syrah. These mountain terroirs produce low yields of first-growth quality fruit.

2017 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Fruit forward, rich, and full flavors expressing both the varietal and the Amador Terroir. This complex wine has notes of bright raspberry, white pepper, and a full pleasant mouthfeel.
2017 was the first full vintage no longer being affected by the previous drought. Good winter rains produced flavorful and healthy crops. The late harvest allowed the grapes to ripen long into the fall developing full complex flavored wines.
Vineyard/Vintage Notes:
Amador County is extremely well suited to Zinfandel. Zinfandel has been grown in the Amador County Gold Rush area for over 150 years. This particular Zinfandel is sourced with fruit from Amador County’s Bowman Vineyard, York Vineyard, and the Chapman Vineyard.

I know Scott Harvey is an auto buy. But we were blessed with the 2016 Syrah. We had to change to our dinner plans slightly and we were grilling in the rain, grilling in the rain, the chicken was sizzling, and we were grilling in the rain ( I hope you are singing the song). We want to thank @Windavid49 and the team for this chance. The nose, quite frankly, was closed. But the legs were good and the first impressions without food were of blackberries and white pepper, with a hint of oak. We love Syrah’s and typically have them with beef, but we had chicken defrosted when the bottle arrived. This Syrah went perfectly with the grilled chicken and the oricchette pasta, but fell flat when we tried it with our store’s dark chocolate truffles, which surprised us. Are you still singing the song, because I am? I would drink a bottle and cellar the rest as this would age rather nicely, if you can wait that long. We drank the bottle, it was that good. Thanks again Wine David and Scott Harvey. It was a bit of sunshine in an otherwise dreary week. I am happy to answer any questions. It was a good bottle but think it could be a great bottle given time.
@pseudogourmet98 Thanks. I am still singing it. This was my first Syrah from Scott as well. I really liked the pepper, but the lack of nose threw me at first.
Is there an “Almost a Lab Rat” graphic? I was shipped what I assume (based on the UPS “SCOTTHARVEYZIN” Reference Number) was a bottle of the 2017 Mountain Selection Zinfandel (it would have been a good accompaniment with the grilled pork chops we had last night). But it seems that the “Rat List” did not follow my updated Casemates shipping address, so it was delivered at 12:30pm yesterday to the house we moved out of 5 months ago. I notified the current occupants as to what had happened and told them to feel free to try it and send me their thoughts (my Casemates staff email contact said they should consider it a late house-warming gift). So far I haven’t heard anything back from them (except a confirmation that it had been delivered there) but if they do send any comments I will post them here.
@winedavid49@CruelMelody@Mark_L I doubt it. Just probably didn’t do their homework as they should. Makes for good marketing even if it is not accurate. Comparisons are loosey goosey here but WD claims otherwise my opinion fwiw
Hi Everyone, Great to be back on with our Mt. Selection wines. The Zinfandel just received 92 points and cellar Selection from the Wine Enthusiast and also a 90 point score from Wilford Wong. In 2016 I was long on Fiddletown Syrah from the Pam York vineyard. Not a bad thing. Syrah is a great blender adding richness and structure to the center palate. The 2016 Syrah was kept in barrel for an extra year. This gives the wine more complexity while sacrificing younger fresh fruit. Pseudogourmet’s Ratage on the wine is spot on.
Look forward to answering more questions as the day goes on.
I like to use once to twice used barrels. I don’t like the coarseness of the oak flavor that a new barrel gives the wine. I don’t like the Bourbon flavor of American oak. So I use French, Hungarian or Moravian once or twice used barrels. Then to adjust the oak level I use these oak balls that are smoothly surfaced. They impart a soft smooth oak flavor. The bigger the wines skeletal structure is the more oak I can hang on it. A Syrah will get 60 balls per barrel while a Pinot Noir will only get 45 balls per barrel. I want enough soft oak in the wine that it is hardly noticeable. I want it as a complexity, not something that over powers the wine.
The Syrah nose is the way it is because it stayed an extra year in barrel. This adds complexity while it takes away from the fresh fruit of the wine. A lower fresh fruit level will make the wine seem a little muted depending on what you are looking for and used to. I’m okay with trading off some of the fruit for more complexity.
@ScottHarveyWine
Thanks Scott.
I remember having some I used with BBQ, hence the question, but didn’t see them on the site so didn’t know if you still had them. You oak comment jogged my memory, so I thought I’d ask.
Well NE Oh what do you think? I see @chipgreen bought a case which I assume is going in his cellar. Split for the rest of us? @marikar@boatman72@pjmartin
@mrn1
If nobody else bites (unlikely as that is) or if too many bite (more likely), I am willing to share 3-6 bottles although I might ask to be cut into the Onesta Cinsault deal from the other day in order to do so.
I was thrilled to receive a bottle of the Scott Harvey 2017 Barbera
for tasting and posting!
On the pop and pour, this wine has lots going on. Lots of berries, nutmeg, a hint of cloves, with a beautiful honeysuckle overhead note.
On the palate, there are oodles of sour cherries, plum skins, and tart raspberries. These are showing up toward the fore and mid palate. There’s a long, lingering finish that brings out hints of baking spices and the snappy zing of raw ginger when it first hit your tongue.
Overall, this wine is a hit for both me and my sister! Scott has made an awesome wine once again!
This wine is tasty now, and I think it will hold for a few years to mellow out the tiny bit of alcohol heat.
THANKS SO MUCH, WCC and Scott, for the opportunity to taste this wonderful wine!!!
@louas I think this time of year it’s usually location-specific. We’ve had a few hot days in SoCal, too.
Regardless of anything else, though, WD has always stood by his practices and will make it right if a shipment gets cooked.
@klezman@louas problem is being cooked doesn’t necessarily mean bottles being delivered with corks popping and wine leaking. Heat damage can be subtle.
@kaolis@klezman@rjquillin totally agree. would have liked WD to have chimed in. Would gladly pay the stipend for “summer” shipping if it was offered as an option. Bet I wouldn’t be alone.
Scott Harvey = easy Autobuy. Very happy to have two Scott Harvey offerings in such a short time frame although my lack of wine storage space is less happy!
@markgm Yep - the last 3 or 4 Scott Harvey offers have not included CT due to cost of shipping licensing as pointed out above. I thought about shipping to a UPS Customer Center in Westchester, NY but don’t want to take the risk at the moment - maybe in the future.
Back when they shipped Scott Harvey to NJ, this was an auto buy. And when FedEx delivered to a Walgreens on the NY state border, this was an auto buy. Now, with UPS shipping, I am sadly out of options.
For all those who have shipping problems, contact Jana at Jana@scottharveywines.com and she will try to take care of you. You can also reach her at 415 264-5641.
Thanks for all your questions and I look forward to the next offering.
Cheers,
Scott
Just got back on. Didn’t realize this ran for more than one day. Anymore questions, I’ll watch for them?. We did a Sauvignon Blanc tasting last night on Zoom and Facebook. We tasted SB’s from around the world. Take a look at it.
Cheers
Scott
Jeesh… It’s been a while for me. I was having an all day movies and sleeping kinda of day. Almost missed this.
Auto buy! Thank you @winedavid49!
Big THANKS to @ScottHarveyWine!!!
I was excited to receive this, my first casemates order in some time. Now I don’t really even want to sign for it. Shipped out on a Friday so it could bake in the sun for 2 days in Lathrop on a hot ass weekend in the mid 90s.
Goal was to lay these down for a while and now I have zero confidence I can do that.
Check your tracking, if you live on the west coast, yours is likely the same.

@trifecta Just arrived. No leakage and packed in styro, but bottles were warm to the touch and IR gun showed 73F while ambient temp here is 57F I guess I’m done for the year until Lathrop daily high are less than 75F (November). I’ll find folks to gift these to that will hopefully enjoy them.

@klezman even club+ pricing can’t touch this.

Thank you for the nice rattage on the Syrah. Very familiar with Scott’s Zin and Barbera, but not his Syrah.
Also, pretty sure I’m now going to be singing that song in my head…

@Mark_L Bummer! Everything else is virtual these days, just make something up
Curious why the “Price Comparison” above includes 2017 Scott Harvey J&S Reserve Zinfandel which isn’t even part of this offer

@jmruru Yes, I’d do a split. I’m in the NW burbs and often in the city. I have “free” shipping so I could pull the trigger?
@jmruru If I’m not too late I’d join. Old Irving Park.
@kfroehlich yes!
@kfroehlich oops. I better pass this time. I reviewed the budget…
@melmains Still up for that split? I’d probably need to be in the neighborhood anyway to pick up another order from Eris.
@jmruru that’s cool
@kfroehlich yes. Sent email.

@ScottHarveyWine what percentage of oak treatment is new? Any thoughts on why danandlisa review found the nose to be muted? Hope all is well!

are “Scott’s Balls” new or used?
Still available?
Sorry, just couldn’t pass this one up.
@losthighwayz @ScottHarveyWine We got some Frogs Balls at the tasting room in Sutter Creek, years ago. They were a little harsh.
@rjquillin Hi Ron, They are new when I put them in the wine. Used when I bag them up and sell them in the tasting room to use in BBQing.
