Well balanced dessert wine with hints of peaches, pears and apricots. High acidity balances with the 28% residual sugar to give you an ice wine complete from the beginning through the long lingering finish.
Vineyard and Winemaker’s notes
Grown just south of Ukiah on the Nelson Ranch in Mendocino County. Nestled in an upland side canyon, this 43-year-old Riesling vineyard produces small yields of flavorful Riesling Grapes. After picking the grapes were delivered to a cold storage place and frozen solid. The frozen grapes were then pulled out and pressed on the 17th January 2018 at 38 brix or 162 Öchle. The wine fermented slowly for one month producing a nectar for the gods.

After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. (Oh, and Scott’s not too shabby with a pen, either.)
Below is a journal entry of Scott’s day, Monday 10/10/17, about his trip through the fires to Mendocino to pick up the Eis wine.
I left Amador county at 1 AM to go pick up grapes in Mendocino. Had no idea what I was going to drive into. Tried to get over to Sonoma via highway 12 at the bottom of Napa Valley around 3 AM. The whole sky to the north west was a bright red glowing inferno and the highway was closed. I went back to HWY 29 and turned north thinking I could go up through Knights Valley. On my way up the valley I could see the hills to the south east of Yountville all ablaze. The whole valley was dark as I made my way north. No electricity, St. Helena was completely dark. No traffic lights. Made my way to Calistoga and saw a bright red line of fire north of town. I was turned around again at Tubbs lane. So, I headed south thinking I would go over HWY 37 via Sears Point. When I got there that road was closed as well. Ended up going all the way south to the Richmond bridge to get over to HWY 101. When I got to Santa Rosa, now about 5 AM, HWY 101 was closed. So, I moved to surface streets trying to get my big box truck around the road closure and drove right into the fire at the north end of town. I turned around in the Kaiser Hospital parking lot, at Kaiser they were evacuating, and headed back south. I finally made it over 101 and went north on side streets on the west side of 101. I made it back onto the freeway going north and reached the vineyard in Ukiah at 7:30 AM. Finished picking five tons of Riesling at 12:30 and started heading home. Could not go south since all the roads were closed. So, headed north to cross over the Vaca range via HWY 20 going through Upper Lake on Clear Lake to Williams in the northern Sacramento Valley. When I got to HWY 20, HWY 101 was closed going north due to Redwood Valley being ablaze. 100 plus homes where on fire. HWY 20 was open going east so I headed out. When I got to Upper Lake the hills to the south east of Clear Lake were also a blaze. I finally made it to Williams and took Interstate 5 down to Sacramento and then home on HWY 16 arriving with five tons of Riesling in Amador at 6 PM. Boy was I beat.

2017 Scott Harvey Ice Style Wine - $60 = 23.06%
I have never had Ice Wine before. Just haven’t gotten around to it…I love that SH is on here, nervous about making this purchase. Sorry… this is a hard pass.
@TechnoViking You’re in San Diego, right? Unless you hate all things sweet, you want a bottle of this. There will be at least one case needing help…
Also, this stuff can age for ever.
@klezman SD roots. Vegas bound. I try and make it down there twice a year. Im not an overly sweet kinda person. I would like to try this to gauge where I fall in the desert wines category.
@TechnoViking So should I put you down for 1 or 2 or 3?
I can also hand off to Ron, who just happens to be here this weekend, if that’s more convenient.
@MarkDaSpark@klezman grr, the temptations. Well I am returning some Bose wireless headphones… maybe I’ll save the wait and order a pack or a case if wifey screams yes!
Also sounds like some more SD peeps are thirsty @Sekraan
WOW…this is an absolutely KILLER deal! The 3-bottle price is fantastic, but the case price is downright insane! After tasting this on the RPM tour this summer I happily got 2 bottles for a lot more than this price.
Obviously some has to come home to our icewine-crazy house (even though this isn’t true icewine, not having frozen the grapes on the vine). The only question is how much and who we’re splitting with.
Mark,
I’ve already got funny and @radiolysis covered, as they are both quite local to me.
Could easily get Sekraan too, as I’ve got bottles to deliver for him as well already.
@CorTot@funnywontons@MarkDaSpark@radiolysis@rjquillin@Sekraan@losthiwayz
Case showed up yesterday.
It looks like the wildcard here is Sekraan, and whether Sparky wants 10 bottles or 7-8.
Cory, I’ve got your stuff along with the Pedroncelli Port and #@$% for both you and Kyle. You owe me for the Angel Eis and Ron for the rest.
I ain’t gonna complain if you need me to take an extra bottle ;P
Thanks for the update! Can’t wait to try one. Never had an ice style before! Also that spreadsheet is incredible. My wife would make me stop talking to you folks if she saw it…
Bit confused as to who’s on first, what’s on second, etc., but I’m good for three bottles from whomever has them available. If Ron has spares that might be easiest since he already has some bottles for me
@radiolysis@rjquillin@Sekraan I think Ron is holding some Halleck for me, and you’re holding WS Pinot Noir for Sekraan and myself. Does everyone have enough Ice Wine? I could contribute to that if necessary, but I don’t think I’m holding anything else for anyone. Please let me know if I’m wrong.
Since I snagged the extra glasses on Meh recently, using the coupon for some of this is a no brainer. I once used the flavor of ice wine in a fantasy novel to describe a magic potion, so I look forward to seeing what this one is like.
Ironically , having a glass of Barbera with Scott’s assistant winemaker in my kitchen when my phone dinged and this casemates email came across - this is a hell of a fun wine and the older I get , the more I love Riesling , I call it my “almost 40 wine “ where I drink Alsatian Guewertz and Riesling
This is always an enjoyable ice-style wine. I already have 9 bottles of earlier vintages but still willing to take 3 or 4 of these if any of the NE OH crew are buying… or I could buy.
@chipgreen@karenhynes In 2012 or so we had a late harvest Riesling that Scott made in 1982. The colour was dark brown, which was odd, but it was absolutely stunning.
Icewine should last even longer.
@Boatman72@chipgreen@mrn1@pjmartin
Me, too! I passed out last night (thanks, melatonin!) and didn’t get back here in time today. Oh well, I’m pretty sure I won’t run out of wine anytime soon.
@chipgreen@karenhynes@mrn1@pjmartin I was at two family funerals starting Thursday thru Saturday afternoon. Sorry, never got a chance to check the offers until Sunday night! I did go in for two Iron Horse offers. Will be interesting to find out.
@novium I’m in Alameda and if we can find 2-3 more Casemates I’d be willing to grab a case to split. If not, I’ll probably still get the 3-pack, which I’m willing to share if you’d still want one or two bottles at the higher price point.
@Lighter I typed this in the caption area of the picture, but it didn’t come up. This label was designed by our nephew. When he graduated from Long Beach State with a degree in graphic arts, I said it was time for him to go to work and asked him to design a label with an angel tapping a frozen bunch of grapes with nectar dripping out into a glass. Being an art student his first rendition was with a nude. Although I liked it, I told him it would be rejected by the Feds and asked him to put a dress on her. Because of this label and others he has done for us, he is now a high powered graphic artist doing a lot of work for the movie industry and we can no longer afford him. He now will do stuff for us for free.
@ScottHarveyWine thanks for the back story and for the sketch. The art, placement, and bottle are very appealing and really say to me “Ice Wine.” Funny how naked women and alcohol threaten government.
Looking for some interested in a NoVA split. I’d be able to take 2 bottles, maybe 3 if can’t get enough ppl to split out the rest. Hopefully enough people to build a full case.
Order placed for the NoVA group. Currently got a 4-way split of 3 bottles each, but each of us willing to go down to 2 bottles. So just let me know if you want part of the order.

@ScottHarveyWine Hi Scott!
Thanks for making this deal happen!
That story is insane…I can’t believe you still managed to get the grapes after all that without turning around and giving up to wait for another day.
@ScottHarveyWine Hey Scott. Call you provide any more details on harvesting ice wine and what you are trying to achieve when picking/fermenting.
I am fairly new to ice wine but always had the assumption that the grapes are either picked or crushed in a semi frozen state.
Was this what you were trying to achieve when picking? Did the fires and not making bit to the grapes by daylight have any impact? Did you do any human assisting in this regard?
Thanks, I am always interested in the process. Ice wine always stands out as a unique one.
@MaceKates Ice Wine is traditionally made from frozen grapes that are frozen on the vine. If it is not made from naturally frozen grapes you can not call it Ice Wine. I have the grapes picked when they are not frozen. It does not get cold enough in California to make Ice wine from naturally frozen grapes. I then take then to a large refrigeration place and have them frozen solid. I leave them there until I can pull them out and process them. That is why these grapes were picked on October 10th, but not pressed until December. Since I can not legally call this wine Ice Wine, I made up the fanciful propitiatory name Angel Ice. For two vintages we labeled it Angel Ice. On the third vintage I got a call from the label approval people at TTB and they asked me how the wine was made. I told them and they said I could not use the word Ice in my propitiatory label. I did not think they were bi-lingual, so I changed the English spelling of the word ice to the German spelling Eis and they passed it. So, now it is called Angel Eis.
I like using commercially frozen grapes better because I can have them frozen to the perfect degrees and can produce the best wine. Naturally frozen grapes aren’t always frozen hard enough for me to get enough sugar for the type of Ice Wine I like to make.
@ScottHarveyWine This is really cool. Thanks for sharing some of the process. I am very excited to try this wine and glad I picked some up before it sold out. This is probably my most exciting buy on Casemates yet.
I saw the offer this morning, but forgot to order. Oh well, it was not meant to be. I still have a few bottles left from before. It is good to see Scott here, hope to see more of his great wine … hint, hint
Aw man…actually wanted to try this. Sadly I didn’t get a chance to get online to purchase until after it sold out. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for this again!
Aaaargh I can’t believe I missed this! Well…if anyone in Southern NH/northern MA grabbed this deal…let me know if you’d be willing to let me buy even one bottle?
Anyone in Philly want to pop into Center City and swap some of this off me? I’m not a fan. (Too sweet and not complex enough vs the style of ice wine I prefer) 11 up for grabs. (I’d ordered the case, as we usually adore ice wines here)
@klezman Alas, I have no decent cellaring space. My place is a small condo that isn’t terribly temperature stable, so I don’t trust wines to age more than a year or so.

No traffic lights. Made my way to Calistoga and saw a bright red line of fire north of town. I was turned around again at Tubbs lane. So, I headed south thinking I would go over HWY 37 via Sears Point. When I got there, that road was closed as well. So headed north to cross over the Vaca range via HWY 20 going through Upper Lake on Clear Lake to Williams in the northern Sacramento Valley.
@ScottHarveyWine Hi Scott!
@ScottHarveyWine
What a story, glad you didn’t end up stuck - or worse!
@chipgreen @ScottHarveyWine Yeah, that is a hair-raising story.
Sold out. Crap.
Seriously, already?
Way to go @ScottHarveyWine!
And thanks.
Glad I was up late.
Perhaps I can peddle some of my case to help defray costs a bit.
SoCal sure got their allocation, and then some.
@rjquillin i’ll bite for a bottle or two.
@radiolysis @funnywontons
Sounds good, two each.

Whew, just barely got some. Very excited to taste/share!
I saw the offer this morning, but forgot to order. Oh well, it was not meant to be. I still have a few bottles left from before. It is good to see Scott here, hope to see more of his great wine … hint, hint
@mommadeb Well, if you make it out to SoCal again, I “may” have some left.
congrats on the sell-out!
Awesome on the sell-out!!!

Already here!
Anyone in Philly want to pop into Center City and swap some of this off me? I’m not a fan. (Too sweet and not complex enough vs the style of ice wine I prefer) 11 up for grabs. (I’d ordered the case, as we usually adore ice wines here)
@Jamileigh17 At the case price, you may be rewarded by putting a couple in the back of your cellar for a decade+. But of course ymmv.
@klezman Alas, I have no decent cellaring space. My place is a small condo that isn’t terribly temperature stable, so I don’t trust wines to age more than a year or so.
@Jamileigh17 And buyer found, yay! Hopefully they like it!
