After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. FYI, while the 9% Forte (his port style) adds a hint of some sweetness, this is still mostly dry.
Since wine ranges in sweetness, you have to do some research to figure out the actual residual sugar in a specific bottle. You can use wine tech sheets to find the exact number. (So useful!)
When reading a tech sheet:
Below 1% sweetness, wines are considered dry. Above 3% sweetness,
wines taste “off-dry,” or semi-sweet. Wines above 5% sweetness are
noticeably sweet! Dessert wines start at around 7–9% sweetness. By the
way, 1% sweetness is equal to 10 g/L residual sugar (RS). 1% sweetness
is a little less than 2 carbs per 5 oz serving (~150 ml)
@MarkDaSpark
Thank you for your comments! I questioned the blend with the forte & how sweet it may make the wine. I have enjoyed the other InZinerators I have gotten in mixed cases but have read that each vintage is different. This is my first Scott Harvey
case purchase of all the same wine. So happy to have had the introduction to Scott’s wines through Casemates.
Each vintage of InZinerator is different as Scott may or may not add some of his Forte (port style wine) to it. Some years have none, and others have a small percentage of it. This one has 9% added.
But taste is all individual, so all that matters is if you like it. Some don’t like when Forte is added, but that’s what is great about Casemates … you find others with similar taste in wines. So if they like something, you’ll probably like it as well.
@MarkDaSpark@rpstrong Just be careful with these generalities - all varieties can be made in dry or sweeter styles. Furthermore, the styles tend to be regional and local as well.
Most of the Riesling and Gewürtztraminer I drink is dry, and if you ask somebody from Alsace, it’s the Pinot Blanc or Gris that’s more often the sweeter wine (unless it’s specifically made in a dessert wine style).
Similarly for the reds, almost all red wine is made either totally dry, in proper late harvest/dessert or Port styles, and the “rich” and barely perceptible off-dry style like the Inzinerator.
I’m in the “no forte” camp myself. I’m always happy to try another vintage of this and see if things have changed. But sweetness perception threshold is closer to 0.4% and this is well beyond that.
And this coming from a guy who loves icewine at 20%+ sugar.
@chipgreen@klezman I’m with klezman, although I’ve never had this wine. I love my sweeties as well, but this style, the 'tweeners as you say, just not in the wheelhouse.
@chipgreen@kaolis not sure this qualifies an “in between” for me. It’s nearly 1% RS. That’s fine for a slightly off dry Kabinett. Not for red wine for me. At 0.3-0.5% it comes off more as “richness” than “sweet”, which can be fine for my tastes.
My favorite InZin was the couple times Scott made these without the port. I’ve still got a signed magnum of the 2006 (no out in the magnum apparently) from winning a trading challenge on the 2010 rpm tour.
But as I said, I’m always happy to try again and reevaluate.
@ScottHarveyWine estate ice wine? Muscat? Do tell… This sounds exciting!
When did you get an estate vineyard? What else is growing there?
I assume that’ll be frozen post harvest like the Angel EIS?
@klezman 6 years ago we leased the Stonehouse winery and vineyards in the middle of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County. 10861 Shenandoah Road. It comes with three acres of vineyard, one acre each of Muscat Canelli, Tempranillo and Petite Sirah. Next week we will be bottling all three Estate wines. The place also came with a three bedroom ranch house which is available for Casemates folks at a reduced rate.
@ScottHarveyWine Oh, I didn’t realize the new winery came with a vineyard. I knew about the cottage. It’s a great property - loved visiting on the 2018 Tour.
Was there more than one 2016 InZINerator? The bottle I have from the Oct '18 offer shows 15% alcohol and has a California appellation. The “Tasting Notes” in the ordering page for this offer also say 15%, but in the “Specs” above it says “Appellation: 100% Amador County, Alcohol: 13.8%”. What exactly is being offered here?
@novium Amador Zinfandels are best picked at 24.5 brix to 26 brix. Zinfandel being an un-even ripener will soak out to 28 or 29 by the next day after crushing. This Zinfandel was picked at 26 brix.
@ScottHarveyWine cool, thanks. I prefer them a little less ripe but I know a lot of people like it that way. Out of curiosity, is the acid adjusted, or does it just get really cold at night, or something else?
@novium No, Amador County being a high elevation mountain area naturally preserves the acidity. This Vineyard, the Bowman vineyard is one of the first to come in, usually at 3.35 pH.
@davidd13 Agreed! Definitely a change, and quite the shame! I have been thinking about joining their club and hyping these wines to all my friends. Sad to see they’re out of reach now.
For his other wines. NC had a thing about the InZinerator being targeted towards kids because of the labels. As if kids want wine!
See the next post for more info.
Also, for the wine club, Scott posted this there …
Label was banned in North Carolina as soon as it came out and still is. NC is on our ship to list for all our other wines. We’ll ship this one as well and take the risk. We’ll let you know what happens.
In NC, but as mentioned no shipping due to the banned label…would it count if you put a few casemates stickers over the label? In for a case if there is a solution:-)
@ScottHarveyWine The Casemates website refuses our order because our shipping address is in NC. We definitely want in on this. What’s the best way to get it done?
@PaleMongo Label was banned in North Carolina as soon as it came out and still is. NC is on our ship to list for all our other wines. We’ll ship this one as well and take the risk. We’ll let you know what happens.
Hi Everyone, Happy Fourth!!
Probably one we will never forget with all this craziness. Not sure how the specs got miss-quoted. The wine is 15% alcohol, 3.37pH, .8% RS, 89% Zinfandel, 2% Syrah and 9% Forte. 100% Amador.
Residual sugar and perceived sweetness are two different things. Residual sugar is the actual sugar level in the wine. Perceived sweetness is a function of the balance of residual sugar and acid/pH. This wine has a really low pH or high acid that makes a .8 residual sugar wine taste dry while having a richer center. This wine’s balance is what the wine Wooter’s choose when we were producing sweeter and dryer styles back in 2004 through 2006.
Cheers,
Scott
@ScottHarveyWine Thanks for the clarification. One more thing, though: how come it doesn’t claim an Amador appellation?
BTW, just opened my bottle and tasted it to see if it is “sweet”. I’d say no, but it’s not far from being sweet. The more remarkable thing about it IMO is that the 15% alcohol doesn’t come through strongly, nor does it taste like it was made from overripe grapes. Some high-alcohol Zins come across as junior ports (which is not a problem for me since I like port), but this one still seems like a table wine. It has a somewhat unusual, but pleasant, flavor aspect that probably comes from the oak aging. It reminds me vaguely of some of the recent boubon barrel aged wines, but isn’t like them either. It sort of goes off in its own direction. As stated above, “a lone warrior in the world of basic Zins”.
I’m with @klezman and others. I bought this vintage when it was offered on here and though I enjoy SH wines overall this one does not make the cut. Forte is hard to ignore and the wine feels heavy and brooding. So much that I have had a half bottle in the fridge over 4 months waiting to be used for a sauce or the like. My two cents
@losthighwayz@rjquillin@ScottHarveyWine If it’s just a matter of style and preference, nothing wrong with using a solid bottle of wine in the pot in the kitchen instead of in the glass…or whatever I’m trying to say.
Happy 4th!
@kaolis@losthighwayz@rjquillin@ScottHarveyWine To be clear, while this isn’t my preference, I have several friends who love it and I have already let them know they should stop by here and buy a case each.
That’s why wine is made in different styles. It’s kind of the point, isn’t it?
@losthighwayz@rjquillin@ScottHarveyWine On the other hand, I find that a cooking wine may well have a different flavor profile than a drinking wine. I often use Mirin in Ponzu sauce or the like, but I wouldn’t care to drink it on its own. [Speaking of sweetness…]
Been drinking Inzinerator for years as a nice alternative to traditional Zins, usually buying it when it comes up here or on the old (gasp) Wine Woot. It’s not for everyone. The bump to 9% Forte is notable but I trust SH to blend it correctly.
Have seen this for years, never tried it. Infidel perhaps, but 12 should satisfy my curiosity and give those, who ask if I have any, satisfaction.
Just had an offering from here, the Hoi Polloi Tryst, and it was quite enjoyable, but as long as it tastes like it’s from a vineyard, I generally like it. No corn syrup relatives, nothing from a petrol distiller, or mad scientist with a Vita-Mix, and I like it.
Happy 4th to all!
Edit to add: I don’t mind oak, as long it is the predicate, and not the subject.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for the sell out. We will be bottling another 500 cases of the 2018 vintage of InZinerator on Wednesday. Anyone locally is welcome to come and observe.

@CroutonOllie Nope, this one is sweet. Barely perceptibly so, but the addition of Forte brings a lot of sugar with it.
@klezman That explains the sweetness then, thanks.

You could pair it with some spicy food to bring out the spice in the wine.
@chipgreen More often than not, I drink wine without food. And, your suggestion will be considered. Thanks.
