Scott Harvey Wines was created out of market demand for Scott’s wines – “niche wines that over deliver.” The Scott Harvey line focuses on Scott’s roots – Barbera, Zinfandel, and Syrah from the Sierras. Approachable, food friendly and full of luscious fruit, these wines have struck a chord in the marketplace.
After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. (Oh, and Scott’s not too shabby with a pen, either.)

Argh you really couldn’t ask for a better bottle to not feel guilty about cracking open… But all the local breweries just announced their stout month specials. Hopefully I can mull it over for a day before a sell out
@CruelMelody If you decide you need some, I’m up for a split! We could even split a six pack if you need to go light and there aren’t other takers; I’d be happy with 3 or 4 bottles at either price.
@jfuruno@LambruscoKid ah shoot you two should split one - I forgot I just joined Providore’s monthly wine club and shouldn’t spend more on wine right now
@CruelMelody No problem! I certainly don’t want to pressure you into it! @jfuruno What do you think? Due to space and $$ I really shouldn’t do a full 6 bottles, though it is only and additional $30ish over the half case price… That said, the half case price per bottle still aint bad!
@LambruscoKid I’m on the fence, which has me thinking that I should hold off. I dabbled in Berserker Day and also bought an IH Magnum last night at 8:57. Let me know if you really want it, but I’m okay sitting out.
@jfuruno I totally understand! Let’s sit this one out. My wallet, and my wife, will be happier for it, as we just loaded up on gin and bourbon from Freeland Spirit’s “booze thru” (highly recommended!). Sounds like this offer is just bad timing for us all around, but there’s always another day
Son of a … teach me to not pre-write the labrat report elsewhere and THEN paste it here. 20 minutes work down the drain because of a stupid refresh. AARGHHHHHH.
Always exciting to get a golden ticket! And we do appreciate a bold red in a handsome bottle:
However, we tend to prefer bolder, more fruit-forward reds, and self-described “old-world style” wines (as this bottle declaims prominently on its rear label) have been more hit-or-miss for us. It’s not like we’ll turn away Corison or anything, but do keep that in mind.
With that said, to the notes. We let the bottle rest for a good 10 hours and then went with pop-and-pour. It had a nice garnet color, clear with no sediment, and nice legs in the glass:
We mostly got red fruit on the nose. I didn’t notice any smell of alcohol. The initial impressions on the palate were black fruit and spice, with the spice mellowing a bit through the evening. (I wrote down “bramble”, for what that’s worth.) Tannins were present but not gripping, and the finish was moderate. However, we both independently noted a distinct astringency in that finish that wasn’t our cup of tea.
In terms of the offer: We’re in the midst of a low-alcohol period after a fairly sodden 2020, so it would’ve taken quite a wine to make the sale. This wasn’t it for us. However, I know that there are a lot of Scott Harvey fans in the audience here, and this does feel like it’s in his standard wheelhouse, so I’m glad to see that we’ve got another labrat report in the works from a veteran taster.
Happy new year, all, and thanks to the Casemates crew for sending us a bottle to taste!
Got notified that a labrat bottle was on the way. Could it finally be a Petite Sirah? Opened the box and found … a 2017 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera.
Full disclosure that I have been in Scott’s wine clubs since 2008. So obviously I’m not unbiased! I have always enjoyed Scott’s Barbera, both Mountain Selection (red label) and Reserve (white label). I mentioned before in a previous SH Barbera offer about a family dinner at a local SoCal Italian restaurant that both Barberas were enjoyed.
Tasted with my son (his wife isn’t into dry reds.). We both enjoyed it with our pasta dishes, and I came back several hours later, and it was delicious on it’s own.
Sadly, my granddaughter’s bath time interferred with my remembering that I wanted to taste it again tonight, so I’ll revisit it tomorrow night.
**2017 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera rating: **
Color: Nice translucent Red color. 5 out of 5
Nose: Got the blackberry and currants, but not the spicy pumpkin pie notes. 11 out of 15
Taste: Not especially fruity or with any noticeable sweetness. Mild tannins. Definitely balanced and great with food. 16 out of 20
Finish: Nice lingering finish as stated. 8 out of 10
89 Points. Both bold and lively, this full-bodied wine grips ripe red cherry and raspberry with some good acidity and mild tannins. Enticing aromas of cedar and toast last through the palate impression and finish. JG 9/1/20
A little more useless detail if correct, from a reversewinesnob offer in January:
The 2017 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera is 84% Barbera from the Shenandoah Valley and 16% Syrah from the small Fiddletown AVA, both within Amador County, California.
The wine is aged for 20 months in French oak and has less than 2 g/L of residual sugar
@osmercontreras@TechnoViking hey guys, did not order anything, am down for the 4-4-4 if someone wants to buy. I’ll be traveling a few times this month and don’t want to miss the delivery.
Scott’s red label Barbera is my favorite wine he makes for the money. At $12.50/btl this is a no brainer, even though we have a lot of wine in the cellar. In for a case.
Gärd, Two Jakes, and now Scott Harvey. I need 2021Casemates to slow down a bit…
Hi Everyone,
Always great to be on Casemates. My notes form 2017 are " Heavy winter rains. No frost. Regular to late bud break. Good growth. Harvest is a little late. No harvest rains. Produced good flavorful wines. Regular to regular plus yields." The Syrah increased and filled in the mid palate. I would give this 15 to 20 years for age.
I’m bottling wine in Napa today and will be driving over there from Amador now. Will get back on when I get there. Cheers, Scott
Looking forward to the wine, seeing as this will be my first time trying Scott’s red label Barbara. Also curious if a mountain reserve will make its way to Casemates. ???
@MuchoRojo Just got to the winery in Napa. I think we would confuse everyone with a Mountain Reserve. We did create a new label for wine club only called Griffin Society which is what I’m bottling today. The 2018 Griffin Society Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cheers
This wine was part of a mixed reds offer from Scott in May of last year. Below is a lab rat report from cjsiege;
I was thrilled to receive a bottle of the
Scott Harvey 2017 Barbera
for tasting and posting!
On the pop and pour, this wine has lots going on. Lots of berries, nutmeg, a hint of cloves, with a beautiful honeysuckle overhead note.
On the palate, there are oodles of sour cherries, plum skins, and tart raspberries. These are showing up toward the fore and mid palate. There’s a long, lingering finish that brings out hints of baking spices and the snappy zing of raw ginger when it first hit your tongue.
Overall, this wine is a hit for both me and my sister! Scott has made an awesome wine once again!
This wine is tasty now, and I think it will hold for a few years to mellow out the tiny bit of alcohol heat.
THANKS SO MUCH, WCC and Scott, for the opportunity to taste this wonderful wine!!!
I had one of these the other night. I think I’ve already gone through a case of these. Time for another case! This is a nice red that you can open and enjoy with or without food. And at this price, it can be a daily drinker!!
Scott’s Barbera is an rpmAUTOBUY - it is always a fine example of Amador Barbera, ages well, and drinks well with food both young and old… I didn’t ‘rat this, but I’ve never had one of Scott’s Barberas I didn’t like very much.
Hmm. I got one of these in the Magnum offering a few months ago. It was the 2018. But I can’t justify opening it for a tasting by “just me.” Hopefully I’ll just cellar that big puppy for a while longer, which sounds like probably what it wants as well. Unfortunately that leaves me without my own tasting experience here, but I do appreciate the fine rattage reports.
Scott is California’s absolute master of Barbera. This is a ridiculously low price for such a wine. It surely has a very long drinking window, but drinks crazy good right now. If you’re low space, either start drinking or start digging.
@osmercontreras Looks like there were already some other Las Vegas people interested in a split. It’s up in the earlier posts; you need to click the button at the top of the visible posts to show the early posts.
The mountain Barbera is one of my absolute favorites! I tried to resist, but just couldn’t. In for a case! I miss my trips out to cali for DnD and our visits with Scott and Jana and all my woot friends. Thanks for the bgreat offer!
@ScottHarveyWine
Scott, when (if) you do have a moment there have been a few asking how the Griffin bottlings tend to differ in style from the Mountain (red) and J&S Reserve (white) label most are familiar with.
@rjquillin The Griffin bottlings are fewer cases for wine Club only. They tend to be more in the reserve style than the Mt. Selection style and will include small lots of things I would have blended off like Primitivo, Grenache etc.
@mrn1 I have a good bottling crew today, so I can break away to look at the board and answer questions. Hope you’re both doing well. Look forward to coming back to Ohio to do some winemaker dinner’s post covid. Jana and I are past our covid fight when we were last on Casemates and doing well.
@ScottHarveyWine Wine maker’s Dinner Post-COVID…music to my ears!!! My only question is where’s the rest of the NE OH crew??? Glad to hear you and Jana are doing well. Don’t forget that lovely wife of yours on Valentine’s Day!!!
@mrn1 Ohio State in Columbus is doing a viticulture/enology virtual conference. Jana and I did a video on virtual tastings for them and will be on for a question and answer period on the 17th this month. Might want to look it up.
@mrn1@ScottHarveyWine Scott, are you and Jana going to do another virtual tasting soon? That was a lot of fun in October… we’d love to drop in for another session. Really surprised me with the Tickle Me Pink.
@ekwartler I have a 2015 in my wine rack I received in a mixed Scott Harvey 5 pack from 2018 which I haven’t tried yet. What should I expect? Might be willing to split a case.
@lethcoeb I already placed the order for 6, but I’d be willing to trade you a bottle. I don’t know exactly what to expect; I just know they have a Barbera festival there and the rest of the American Barbera I’ve had has been mediocre at best. Which is why I was so excited to go in.

I’d take a few if any SoCal splits become available.
@rjquillin I would be interested in 2-4 if helps make it work out
@rjquillin Turns out a co-worker wants nearly a full case so I can poach a few bottles from him; thus leaving LA on their own…
@davirom @rjquillin @klezman
I’ll buy the case and keep 6. So 3 and 3 to @davirom & @klezman?
Or 2-2-2 to each? Or 3-2-1 (d/k/r)?
@klezman @MarkDaSpark I am already in a split with Lost. Sorry.
@davirom @klezman @MarkDaSpark

And there was an offer with both last year, IIRC.

@ScottHarveyWine is there a possibility to purchase for CT as it is not listed in Casemates? It worked in the past.

@lethcoeb I already placed the order for 6, but I’d be willing to trade you a bottle. I don’t know exactly what to expect; I just know they have a Barbera festival there and the rest of the American Barbera I’ve had has been mediocre at best. Which is why I was so excited to go in.
This seems decent, I like Barbera but have never tried an American one. In for a case.
Anyone in Nashville, Tennessee want to split a case?
@nathanbsmith
Sadly it appears that cases are gone. Buy yourself a sixer.
I like that it pairs with “food friendly”
