2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Dark color, red fruit of currents, white pepper, violets, oregano, coffee, and grilled steak lead to an extractive fleshy structure with firm tannin and a long lingering finish.
Grown on steep mountainous terrain in the higher elevations of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California. 2020 had an early bud break causing an early harvest with an even growing season without any heat spikes or prolonged cold spells. It produced an average size to slightly larger than average size crop of high quality dark and flavorful fruit Unlike last year, all the varieties fared well except Petite Sirah. A picture-perfect year for vines and fruit.
Produced in the Italian old world, food-friendly style.

2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel, Amador County
Tasting Notes
Fruit-forward, rich full flavors expressing both the varietal and the Amador Terroir. This complex spicy wine has notes of bright raspberry, dark fruit, and briary Zinfandel character with a fresh finish
Vineyard/Vintage Notes
Amador County is extremely well suited to Zinfandel. Zinfandel has been grown in the Amador County Gold Rush area for over 150 years. These old head-pruned dryland farmed vineyards produce low yields of extractive flavorful Zinfandel

After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. (Oh, and Scott’s not too shabby with a pen, either.).

Surprise surprise, when a rat bottle shows up with a case of wine from the old brown square truck. And to add to that, a Scott Harvey bottle!
2020 Scott Harvey Zinfandel
PnP: dark ruby red, subtle alcohol on the nose…add some vigorous swirls and soft cherrie scent begins to emerge, some pepper notes.
First sip: peppercorns, high tannins, a sensation of bitterness lingers with every sip, not offputing but feels like it should be paired with something savory.
Wasn’t able to pair with dinner as I forgot about this bottle and had a hot Filipino sour soup.
After letting wine breathe, peppery notes still linger, but now berries begin to show up, some mild acidity is present.
Overall great wine, but that goes without saying for Scott Harvey.
2020 Barbera (Mountain Selection) by Scott Harvey, Plymouth, Amador County, California
Intense ruby color. Out of the bottle, nose is a little shy. Dark cherry, red vines licorice, dusty hay. As it breathes, pops of raspberry emerge.
Body is light, thin, balanced from front to back. Dry overall. Smooth, fully integrated tannins in the form of dry cherry-plum skins. A very faint hint of oak elevates the fruit and lifts it forward ever so slightly. These fundamental components of a classic wine are well represented. With an abundance of restraint, they interplay on the palate, slowly fading into the background, leading to a finish with gentle spice and mild grip.
Barberas from this region tend to lean heavy on the bigger, acidic, fruit-forward end of the spectrum. This Barbera is a clear departure from this trend. An exception from the norm. It shows great restraint, balance and overall composition. As a Pinot lover, I must say this resonates with me. I highly recommend for the intermediate to advanced palate. A simply well made Barbera fitting for the world stage.
At this price, this is squarely in the head-scratcher territory of a deal. I’m in for a case!
Well of course there is a little chatter from the all-knowing wine scribes…
The Barbera from Wilfred Wong:
The 2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera is bright and sassy, like the way this grape variety should be. TASTING NOTES: This wine offers aromas and flavors of boysenberries and other tart berries. Enjoy its freshness with well-seasoned roasted Porchetta. (Tasted: February 12, 2023, San Francisco, CA)
Same grape, the Enthusiast:
90 Points. This easily enjoyable wine offers notes of rose and violet florals, cranberry, strawberry, rhubarb, fennel, cinnamon, nutmeg and a touch of wood. Excellent elevated acidity ensures freshness from start to finish, while medium tannins gently coat the palate. — Stacy Briscoe 3/1/23
And Reverse Wine Snob, the Barbera was offered in a combo pack with the '19 Zinfandel back in January. ($69.99 / 2 each)…
The still young 2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Barbera compares favorably to the 2017, 2018 and 2019 vintages we previously offered. It opens with jammy black cherry, lots of blackberry, raspberry, a little cola, touches of vanilla and baking spice and even a bit of a brambly note. It’s quite lovely and very aromatic and only gets more so with time in the glass.
Tasting unleashes plenty of juicy, fruity deliciousness in your mouth as you are accustomed to with this wine, but perhaps offers a bit better balance than those previous vintages. Featuring well-integrated baking spice notes, there are also notes of candied cherry and blackberry although the wine has almost no residual sugar (less than 2 grams per liter). This is not even close to a sweet wine, but it does have many sweet flavors. Really smooth and with bright acidity, it is at its best after a couple hours of air and was even better on day 2. It ends dry with long lasting sweet fruit notes. While it’s totally delicious right now, it’s easily got another 10-15 years of aging ability so there’s really no reason not to stock up at this price.
Oh boy, that Barbera is out there, from 2023 Sunset International Wine Competition, Sonoma County, CA May 23, 2023:
Double Gold. 96. Bright red fruits, notes of black cherry, roasty-toasty well balanced, fruit integrated, sensitive on the finish.
On to the Zinfandel…let’s lead with Mr. Wilfred again:
91 Points. The 2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel delivers excellent richness with a lovely balance. TASTING NOTES: This wine shows aromas and flavors of bright berries and black licorice, with hints of spice and jam. Pair it with a rosemary and garlic-infused roast leg of lamb. (Tasted: February 12, 2023, San Francisco, CA)
Enthusiast:
93 Points. This Zin is sure to bring a smile. Nuanced aromas and flavors suggest fresh river water, wet rock minerality, rose, violet, cranberry, strawberry, rhubarb and fennel, all sprinkled with hints of chocolate, star anise and touches of wood. Tannins are coarse but mature, and well met by the exciting fruit concentration. The finish lingers. — Stacy Briscoe 3/1/23
Reverse Wine Snob, again, now July '23. Both of these wines were offered as a sampler 6-pack along with the Syrah.
The 2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel begins with a wonderful, big, very spicy aroma of cherry, raspberry, vanilla, tons of licorice and more. It’s quite inviting, and it gains even more complexity as it has time in the glass.
Tasting reveals plenty of spicy fruit and licorice to go along with candied cherry flavors in this balanced and delicious wine. I almost want to describe it as liquid candy but that doesn’t really fit since this is a very dry wine with less than 2 grams per liter of residual sugar. It is; however, extremely flavorful and also quite smooth.
And while previous iterations of this wine needed some time to breathe, this vintage is very balanced and harmonious right from get-go, although it still somehow gets even better with some air.
It ends dry and slightly grippy with tons of lasting fruit, licorice and spice and even a bit of a mineral edge. It’s fantastic and it was just as good on day 2.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: tax and shipping are not included in savings calculations).
Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Mixed Reds - $20 = 11.10%
I never pass up a Scott Harvey offer, especially when it’s barbera and zinfandel. Insane value on these, especially if you can use the $25 off case coupon offered on Meh last month. An absolute no-brainer even without a coupon.
These wines are such an incredible value. Scott Harvey is the reason Shenandoah Valley, in Amador County is on the map. He has mentored so many successful wine makers in the area, and it’s ironic to see such a veteran selling these wines at “casemates” prices. I have both these wines in my wine refrigerator and absolutely consider these a “weekend” wine. In for another case easily.
I have had wine shipped to my UPS Store, but last time I picked up, they said that I needed to have it shipped by WCC to an approved UPS Access Point. Here is the language from the website:
"To ship wine to a UPS Access Point location:
-Shippers must use a UPS Locator tool and the “Accepts Restricted Articles” filter to select an approved destination UPS Access Point location.
-Shippers must also use approved UPS Access Point “Contains Alcohol Beverage Adult Signature Required” labels for wine shipments sent to UPS Access Point locations.
-Wine shipments can be redirected to UPS Access Point locations with the ability to accept restricted goods."
So…how do I go about getting my wine? Is this something Casemates can do?
@ejrunion@Mark_L its the unfortunate thing ive come to expect from UPS nickel and diming for what should be standard service. I kind of just consider it as necessary if you buy any amount of wine online and dont have a full time staffed business you can ship to.
Can’t say no at this value. Out of curiosity, popped a 2019 Zin Sunday and would have to say we enjoyed a click more at every level than the 2020 which we love. So with a little patience…
And on a totally different tangent especially for Trembling Hillsonians. Sadly drank my last 2014 Ondarre Reserve mid October. One of my top 5 all time QPRs.
Was in NY a few days later and needed to pick up some wine to dull the pain of familial tension. Popped into tiny wine and spirits shop in Garden City, and there, at eye level was the 2018 Ondarre Reserve. $13.99. Amazing and delicious. Drank 3 bottles over 6 nights.
@louas
Trembling Hillsonians LOL I remember the wine board and Ondarre fondly! although I drank through those pretty quickly, as many know I don’t sit on wines that taste good now. Not many of us left I suppose
Hi Everyone, On my computer in a Lisbon hotel at 7 AM. Thanks for all the great comments. Wasn’t sure if I would be able to get on or not. If your state does not allow shipping give us a call at the winery. Usually, I just have you call Jana, but she is here with me. Loving the food and wine getting ready to board a Tauck cruise line up the Douro River with 30 wine club members. We are still harvesting. Luckily, our capable winemaker, Mollie Haycock is taking care of it. We have 12 tons of Toy Barbera coming in today. Next week will be the Portuguese varieties for the Forte and then we’ll be finished. This is my 50th harvest and the latest harvest of all 50. The longer hang time has produced inky, extractive, but lower alcohol softer wines. We’ll see how they age out. Thanks for the wonderful lab rat reports. Cheers, Scott
@ScottHarveyWine Hope you guys have a great vacation. Autobuy for me. Thank you for the offering & as always your participation. My wish…It would tickle me pink for a Jana’s wine offering
In for a case. Our favorite Zin and Barbera that Scott sells. Restrained, balanced, Eurocentric balance and models of varietal character. IMHO, better wines than his more expensive offerings (sorry, Scott). My wife RuthE squeals with delight at the thought of these wines, particularly the Mountain Zin.

Popped a bottle of the 2020 Barbera last night from the last offer – delicious, just ordered another case to replenish (if anyone in Columbus wants to try a bottle, happy to share some)
I absolutely cannot order another case of wine until I have lowered my storage by multiple cases. Fortunately, the “less than a case” penalty is low on this offer, so I’m getting 4 bottles to keep my SH years intact.

@kaolis Thanks for all the great info! I also picked up some of the 2020 Barbera earlier this year when it was offered on casemates in April

How have these been priced even lower than previous offers of the same (older vintage)? Was there a much larger yield in 2020 vs 2017/2018?
I have multiple cases of SH and surely don’t need more but at this price I honestly don’t think I can pass on it.
A great way to use my $25 coupon discount!

@ejrunion ship it to your house and then use UPS mychoice to reroute it to an access point or UPS store. Thats my recommendation.
