2020 Scott Harvey Mountain Selection Zinfandel, Amador County
93 Points, Wine Enthusiast
Tasting Notes
Fruit-forward, rich full flavors expressing both the varietal and the Amador Terroir. This complex spicy wine has notes of bright raspberry, dark fruit, and briary Zinfandel character with a fresh finish
Vineyard/Vintage Notes
Amador County is extremely well suited to Zinfandel. Zinfandel has been grown in the Amador County Gold Rush area for over 150 years. These old head-pruned dryland farmed vineyards produce low yields of extractive flavorful Zinfandel
Winemaker’s Notes
Grown on steep mountainous terrain in the higher elevations of the Shenandoah Valley of Amador County, California. 2020 had an early bud break causing an early harvest with an even growing season without any heat spikes or prolonged cold spells. It produced an average size to slightly larger than average-size crop of high-quality dark and flavorful fruit. Unlike last year, all the varieties fared well except Petite Sirah. A picture-perfect year for vines and fruit. Photos from this year will be the ones used in promotional materials for years to come.
Specs
Varietals: 100% Amador County, 97% Zinfandel, 3% Petite Syrah.
After decades of creating and crafting premium wines for wineries like Santino and Folie a Deux – and putting Amador County on the map as a world-class appellation – Scott Harvey launched his own winery in 2004. With decades of winemaking experience on two continents, it’s no wonder his wines have become an immediate sensation. It’s an overnight success 35 years in the making. (Oh, and Scott’s not too shabby with a pen, either.)

Hi Everyone, I pulled out the sheet to record my little speech for this offer and noticed it is running today. Sorry for not realizing it was running so soon. Anyway, I’m here to answer any questions. This is our main Zinfandel. My and Jana’s everyday Zinfandel. What we sell the most off. Made in the old world style from grapes that are ripe, but not over ripe. Hard thing to do with Zinfandel, since it is such an uneven ripener. 2020 was a regular crop year after so many drought years. It produced beautiful looking grapes with full flavors and good color. The wine is now 4 years old and will hold up for at least another ten years.
Cheers,
Scott
I think I have a lot of this in the “cellar”, but now another case. I will pull a bunch of bottles for regular consumption once it arrives. Hard to have too much SH.
@ScottHarveyWine
Hey Scott, last week I was digging around in the cellar and found a 2006 J&S Syrah I opened just last Tuesday and forgot to post in the ‘what are you drinking’ thread. Sure is throwing some sediment I just drink around. Finishing it up this evening. Nice bottle, wish I had a few more…
@rjquillin Hi Ron, Thanks for the post. In 2006 Syrah was selling well and then Sideways hit the movie theaters and the bottom fell completely out of the market. Syrah with it’s high level of anthocyanins will throw a lot of sediment. I like spreading the sediment on a nice juicy steak.
Cheers,
Scott
@cynthylee I agree, and, have you ever had Scott Harvey’s Riesling? I’m a red wine fan, but this one is German bred and, I think will satisfy the palates of most red wine drinkers/lovers.

@kaolis Also part of the 7/22/23 mixed offer.
another previous offer
@kaolis Ahhhh
no wonder I already have a case, but I do like the pricing better here and now.
Wish I had room for this.
Sadness no Connecticut! I understand, our state sucks.

@ScottHarveyWine But it definitely won’t last that long!!!
In for a case, but this one is my wife’s fault! (OK - It wasn’t hard to twist my arm!)

Auto buy here! Love the previous mixed case with Barbara but Zin just as much as Barbara to get full case of either. Thank you Scott!

Agh… I am so running over on wines… so not fair.
Ah well, my wife love Zin’s and SH is a auto buy…

@ScottHarveyWine
Never thought of finishing a steak with it;
Next time!
I thought that movie clobbered Merlot, not Syrah
@rjquillin It clobbered them both.
@rjquillin @ScottHarveyWine haiku for the topic
Movie mocked Merlot
And yet we all love Syrah
Why was it hurt too?
I totally agree with the others… Scott’s wines (especially Zin & Barbera) are an auto-buy. In for a case.
Cheers!

Oh no. Bought another case of SH. My friends think I’m a genius. Thanks for keeping the myth alive.
