This 2022 Pinot Noir opens with complex dark cherry and berry aromas with hints of mushroom, truffle, and Herbes de Provence.
The Vineyard
Reuling Vineyard is located in the Sonoma Coast AVA, just off Highway 116 between Graton and Forestville. Planted in 2000 under the direction of Mark Aubert and Peter Michael Winery, this vineyard is comprised of 12.2 acres of Pinot Noir planted to three unique clones - Calera and two distinct “suitcase” clones from the Vosne-Romanée region of Burgundy. There are also 2.2 acres of Chardonnay on the property. The vineyard is perched on a small hillside with gentle slopes at an elevation of 250 feet. It benefits from the cool marine influences converging from the coast, yet is exposed to the sun and afternoon heat, allowing the grapes to reach optimal maturity. It’s extremely sandy Goldridge soils naturally stress the vines, resulting in low yields and concentrated flavors.
Fermentation & Bottling
100% destemmed Pinot Noir

50% new French Oak Bottled unfined and unfiltered
Bottled August 2023
Winemaker Notes
A warm 2022 summer brought one of the earliest harvests on record in the Sonoma Coast, with a September heat wave influencing some picking decisions. Cooler pockets of the Sonoma Coast fared well through the heat, and the resulting wines offer depth and finesse. Yields were miniscule, with many vineyards breaking records on the low side for cluster weights. The resulting wines have concentrated flavors with tension and length. All three Reuling Pinot Noir clones were fermented separately before being blended just prior to bottling to showcase the complexity of the vineyard. The Reuling clusters were minuscule in 2022, resulting in more depth and intensity. The resulting wine is layered and expressive, offering a mix of red and dark fruit, floral and savory tones.
This wine offers an intriguing blend of dark red fruits and forest floor with the signature Sangiacomo creamy texture. This vintage offers excellent acidity with silky tannins that are enjoyable now yet will age well in your cellar.
The Vineyard
This vineyard is situated on Roberts Road at the western base of Sonoma Mountain. We source fruit from five distinct blocks. The core clone 115 block was originally planted in 1998 on 101 - 14 rootstock in an old creek bed and forms the base of this wine each vintage. Portions of Swan and Mt. Eden clones are blended in to add complexity and structural nuances. Climate is key to this vineyard’s ability to produce noteworthy Pinot Noir. Cool ocean breezes and Petaluma Gap fog keep the heat in check and allow for long hang time while retaining natural acidity.

Each clone was fermented and aged separately in 50% French oak barrels. The resulting wine offers alluring red fruit aromas with hints of the forest floor.

Hi All. I received a bottle of 2023 Sojurn CellarsPinot Noir, Sangiacomo Vineyards, Sonoma County Tuesday evening. I opened the bottle to let it breathe for 3 hours because I wanted to get a jump on getting several days of tasting because I was having a busy week and the wine was going to be offered on Friday.
So Late Tuesday I poured a quick sample. I didn’t expect anything amazing because 3 hours earlier it arrived of the UPS truck. Visually, the wine looked like a medium body red wine. I gave it a good swirl in my Casemates wine glass, then checked the aroma. I got some cherry, spice, and alcohol. I swirled it again, this time longer. My palate detected a little cherry with moderate acidity and spice integrated with the alcohol. Once finished, I felt an alcohol burn on the back of my throat. Again, I didn’t expect much that night.
On Wednesday, I sampled the wine at 1:00 pm. So I pulled some paleo beef smokies in from the refrigerator to see how the wine reacted to them. On the nose I got an undertone of light cherry and integrated spice and alcohol. So again, I gave the glass a long swirl. After eating a half of the beef smokie, I tasted the wine and got very similar results the day before, except there was less cherry. I still got the alcohol burn in the back of my throat. I got out my venturi to aerate the wine and poured another sample. The wine was better because the aeration minimize the acid and alcohol. I then capped the bottle and pumped out the air to create a vacuum.
On Thursday morning before I went to my volunteer work in a horsemanship program for special needs children, I took the vacuum top of the bottle. Four hours later I came home and worked in the yard until 7 pm. The wife warmed up a recently purchased Irish sausage hot pocket. I ran the wine through the venturi. This time I got some cherry, a little red raspberry, light spice and alcohol. Again, I got the alcohol burn on the back of my throat, BUT it wasn’t as tense as earlier tastings!
In summary, this is a 2023 vintage and I think the wine needs more time to integrate. I would cellar it for at least 2 to 3 years. The alcohol burn was a negative for me and I’ve been drinking wine since I was stationed in Germany in late 1969.
A Great Big Shout Out and Thank You to Alice and everyone at Casemates!!!
I’d end this with GO BUCKEYES, O-H-, but they already won the NCAA College Championship! I can’t say anything good about the Cleveland Browns, because they suck big time. BUT HOW ABOUT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS!!! What a great year they’re having!!! Is it their “WINE” & Gold jerseys???
That’s interesting. According to their website the 2023 Sangiocomo Pinot Noir received 95 points from International wine report as well. I don’t really put much faith in the wine scores so I’m not that surprised, but that’s a pretty hefty price tag.
Well, this labrat was grateful for a midweek surprise. And let me tell you, it was more surprising than the first new episode of Righteous Gemstones.
Normally, we are a PiNOt people. Of the ones we’ve tried, some are too sweet, and some were in secondary fermentation. Not pleasant at all. For this bottle,we drank it very two nights. Accompanied by first Will Trent, and then Mark Scout, we taste a delicious blend of blackberry, pepper, earth, and balanced fruits. It lost some bite as it moved from 57 degrees F higher. The second night had a stronger bouquet of smell, and was quite delicious.
Since it’s Friday, and a single day offering, to make a long story short (too late!) it’s worth at least a two pack for a couch date. Huzzah and good health!

Well not wasting my precious coffee time if we don’t know what vintage is up for grabs…I will mention the '22 Sangiacomo maybe being offered here today is over on a flash site that ends in “O” for $35 along with four other '22 bottlings, no Reuling, and a mag of '21 on offer as well.
The bottle arrived and anticipation started to build. When? What? How yummay? Can we fix up pairings? Plenty of time to rest the bottle, just not enough time, with life craziness including town hall meeting in my town w 2,000 folks attending, to work out pairings. So…
PnP: deep garnet for a PN, nice nose of red fruits with no big alcohol. Maybe that’s smoke or leather in the back of my nose, pencil shavings perhaps. Smells like democracy under attack? First sip: round, smooth, nothing like any edges. Red fruits still up front, medium finish length. She says: Complex, Deep. While I do like a good merlot (LOL) this is an excellent example of a pinot noir. Not the end cap loss leader for sure. Tastes like the bottle to pop open on Bastille Day. Not to say you should save it for then, make today your Bastille Day and open one after you storm the barricades. Allons Enfants! (But to fully recognize the wine’s, Cali heritage, perhaps a better way to say it is: “I do mind, the Dude minds. This will not stand, ya know, this aggression will not stand, man.”) This wine is no cellar defender, but could be for a defender nontheless. Be that defender, and BUY NOW.
If this gets me fired as a Rat, know that I have appreciated the chance to serve all of you. k
