2019 Black Zeppelin Petite Sirah, Grenouille Ranch, Calaveras County
Tasting Notes
Big, dark, and aggressive, but not angry or backward enough to require five-to-ten in the cellar penitentiary, as the tannins are well short of biker-bar clearing level. (Floral, spicy, meaty: violent chocolate, Violet Asquith; clove, June Cleaver. Fruit: the blackberry syrup from the International House of Pancakes in Heaven. It’s easy to find: it’s across the street from the Cadillac dealership where Elvis gave Jesus a Sedan deVille as a surprise birthday present, and next to Ahura Mazda.)
Owned by a very old friend indeed, the remote ranch in Calaveras, through which the burbling water of Jesus Maria Creek flows and whence came the Petite Sirah, is rather well guarded, considering that there are only a few hundred vines. There’s a homicidal tractor, an assault fiddle, and a Telecaster, that like this wine has unusual “sus-staining” properties. In other words, it’s dark with a long finish.

2019 Wine Club Red Blend
Tasting Notes
Some of you may know that we don’t have a wine club in the conventional sense: fully automatic shipments, expired credit cards, etc. This one is different: the bottle itself is absurdly heavy: it could be a bar weapon. (We got a small stack of it from a grateful winemaker friend in exchange for a few grams of enological dust.) But the wine inside the bottle, ahhhh! A plum growing on a rose bush, coffee, vanilla and … is that deer lure? Never mind. It’s structurally supple - there’s a glycerol/tannin ratio the reciprocal of the Black Zeppelin PS - and it would admirably complement vine-fed venison.
"Wine Club? Listen ya fool, there’s no wine club here except for this bottle of Zeppelin. Ya wanna join it?

What do you mean “we”, Kemosabe? In ancient times, long ago, hundreds of years before the dawn of history, the consulting winemaker, assistant cellar sock monkey, and rock band mismanager Stillman Brown of Red Zeppelin infamy, and his footloose and still insufficiently silent mouthpiece and de factoid attorney GD Lewis of Jory Winery, became Zeppelin Winery, and make wines that at least one of them believes are at least more than good enough to have pretty much anything on the label, though certainly not ghost pepper extract. Over the last several years, most of the wines have been from grapes grown by one of our crazier clients who is located in two concocted subappellations of west Paso Robles that split the hidden Hill of Graceland vineyard. Visitors are generally discouraged; if they find us they often become despondent. Sales are almost exclusively to our email list - there is no club to join or quit, just an invitation to a FREE party when the one who isn’t dead yet has a ‘major birthday’. swillyidle@gmail.com. What quality can be put in the bottle by the efforts of the arrogant consultant, the absurdly overworked cellar monkey, and myself (making in all, one) is facilitated by a cluster of factors, but what we can put on the label is often constrained by artwork and by government mandates and forbiddances. That’s why these labels don’t say “30 PROOF” or “Alibi Value 15%” - in visible ink, anyway.

Stillman (also know by other names ) has always had a way with words just like he has a way with big, bold wines. Know him from way back in the Jory days.
2019 Black Zeppelin Petite Sirah, Grenouille Ranch, Calaveras County
Definitely Inky, but not jammy … Scored it 90.
PNP - mild tannins, don’t really notice the 16.1% alcohol on nose or taste, nice nose of black fruits (blackberry, black cherry). Not syrupy (if you thought it from IHOP comment in notes).
Used new aerator/decanter (Wine Breather, see pic #2) for second pour. Also kept in glass (2nd pour) for a while while eating a ribeye. Tasty with the ribeye.
Using aerator/decanter, poured it back into bottle 3 hours later from PNP. Sublime at this point (glass from bottle pour), so decant this for around 6 hours for full effect.
Definitely big and dark, but no face smashing tannins as bolder PS. Went well with the ribeye.
@MarkDaSpark Thank you: comment below!

50+ years ago, I used to swim in a creek off Jesus Maria Road. There was this amazing tree, some sort of Willow looking thing that; when we stood under it, it rained on us. I always suspected that the roots grew directly into the stream. We called it “The Rain Tree”. Great swimming hole. That being said, it’s nice that the tariff for 3 bottles is reasonable with this offer.
I was lucky enough to be a LabRat for the blend. I opened it a few hours before consumption, but the first taste was really nice.
This is a quite good wine. It was deep purple/maroon in color. It has notes of cherry, fig and plum . The Tempranillo is the predominate note. The Zinfandel is noticeable with some Boysenberry. The tannins are well integrated and quite nice. I paired it with a pizza made in my Ooni oven. It was up to the task.
Definitely a wine that is easy on the palate but complex enough to endure different foods. It had an amazing mouth feel. Will definitely buy some of this wine!
Damn it! I’ve been waiting months to try some of this winery’s wine. Can someone in northern Ohio buy me a case? Im in south eastern Michigan and can come pick it up
Hey, I want to say that I am very happy with the lab rat reviews…One of the greatest wine writers of all time said, addressing winemakers, that if they were thinking about sending samples to bloggers, they should instead hop on their forklift, raise the forks a foot or so, and then drive into a pallet of their best wine. I have tasted with a lot of professionals over the decades, and I can’t say they’re a lot better. I don’t know if you guys publish any reviews outside casemates but I can say: Exceptio Probat Regulam (see Bierce, “Exception”). He had some great remarks about wine as well and I would send him samples except for … well, you know.
OK - it’s time to drive home maybe I can make it in less than an hour. I don’t know how to put pictures up with my iPhone and I have a few… So if I don’t pass out with my face in a bowl of - I’ll see if I can’t post some irrelevant pictures from my laptop.

@char2na There were 3 different BZs that year! The Hames PS was the showiest early on, but soft- it may have slipped. The others should be fine, though I haven’t had any in 4-5 years…
Thanks for the response. I have 1 Monterey and 2 Central Coast. I have trouble pulling the trigger sometimes on the stuff I really like. It’s a double edged sword.

@kls_in_MD I already order the 3 bottles but I’m between Baltimore and DC if you ever want to split a case in the future. I would have split a case if I had known someone in the area.
At first I thought the price / bottle was higher than other recent offers (although I haven’t seen the black zep PS offered since I’ve been here) but it’s right in the middle. I also thought I had a bottle of the black zep PS but it’s the Zinfandel! Guess I’m going to have to break out of the wine budget a little bit to get a three pack. OH WELL
Who was that pervert that thought that deer lure meant urine? I suppose if Petite Sirah was a white variety, his attempted snark would have . . . no, it wouldn’t.
I used a mix of apples, with whiffs of vanilla extract and oak barrel shavings.

@CorTot@rjquillin@ZeppelinWinery I watched the intro on the Pyro Spectaculars website. Very impressive involvement on your part (in both terrestrial and extraterrestrial displays)!
would you prefer to observe a five minute display or a 15 minute display?
I don’t recall ever having seen or shot a show that was only five minutes.
The 4th shows have been getting progressively shorter as it is, those and NYE are historically the two ‘large’ shows each year and are now down to ~15 minutes, where earlier shows I can remember were closer to 45 minutes.
Quite a few are networked and shoot simultaneously; those with a smaller budget will only shoot a section, or will have a reduced shell count or more economical shells.
Due to changes in regulations (safe areas) where we used to shoot 12" we’re now down to 8" and sometimes only 6" product.
From an operator standpoint, if all is going well, a 15 minutes show feels more like five and is over all too soon, considering the hours (days) it takes to setup.
