SummerWood Winery, located at the gateway to Westside Paso Robles, focuses on small lots of artisan wines, crafted by Winemaker Mauricio Marchant. In addition to the SummerWood estate vineyard, the winery sources fruit from acclaimed vineyards throughout the Westside Paso Robles appellation.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 Vin Blanc is an estate-grown white Rhone blend. It displays pleasing aromatics of stone fruit, pineapple, and papaya. The wine opens to a creamy mouthfeel of seasonal stone fruit and lemon curd. The soft and round mouthfeel leads to flavors of nectarine, and orange zest with a long finish. We hope you’ll enjoy it with your friends and family.
At SummerWood, the winemaking philosophy is simple: Be gentle, nurture throughout the process, and never compromise the quality of the wine.
Low yields, respect for the land, and hands-on winemaking tradition are key as SummerWood wines are expressions of their environment. Wines holding varietal designation are intensely defined examples of an individual grape’s character, while our flagship blends provide a stage for our winemaker’s orchestration of the vintage’s greatest performance. Constantly evolving, and impossible to duplicate, each wine is unique. SummerWood wines are rich, intense, complex and elegantly designed to accompany life’s most memorable moments and simple pleasures.

It’s always a treat to get the shipping notification that an unexpected Casemates package is on the way. And this one came with a lovely wine glass taboot - thanks Alice!
This is also the rare time when the style is right in our wheelhouse. We drink a lot of white - and specifically old world or old world style blends - around here. If this hadn’t arrived, we would have likely opened a 2020 Stefano di Blasi Bianco da Uve Leggermente Appassite tonight, or maybe even the 2016 King Estate Roussanne Marsanne from a previous Casemates sale. The second is a very apt comparison to the SummerWood.
The label is understated.
Nothing amiss with the cork.

After having two glasses, I’ll consider this wine through the lens of their own description.

Absolutely. This is one of the most fun and enjoyable “nose” experiences I’ve had in a while. The sweetness of the papaya comes through along with some potent fruit smells. The nose made me fear the wine would be a bit too “white grape juice” to taste but the nose itself was excellent.

Again, agreed 100%. Creamy mouthfeel - not too “sticky” or thick, but enough substance and body to know you’re drinking something of quality. No complaints here.

This is where the description loses me and the wine just came up a bit short. The “white grape juice” fears were not realized, no issue there. We didn’t get any distinguishable notes or flavors at fridge temp or letting it warm up into the 60s. None of the elements of the nose seemed to translate to the tongue. The wine wasn’t bad, by any means, but it tasted like “unoffensive white wine.” If you were at a random fall get together with a cooler of bad beer and someone handed you this, I think you’d be pleasantly surprised and grateful. If you’re sitting down to enjoy a carefully made old-world-style Rhone blend, I think you’d say, “that was okay.”
We hope you’ll enjoy it with your friends and family.
Wife and I enjoyed the opportunity to try it and feel bad sharing something less than a glowing review. Seeing the price this morning does make it tougher to pass because that’s a great deal on something well-made that you’ll never mind drinking. Still, we have enough whites that we look forward to opening that I’m not sure we have a spot for one that doesn’t quite provoke that feeling.

2019 SummerWood Winery Vin Blanc - $30 = 25.00%
Background: For whites, my wife and I are not Chardonnay folk, more Pinto Grigio folk. It’s a very, very busy week and weekend, but we were able to do a pretty good test of this wine.
I started drinking this close to fridge temp with rotisserie chicken and rice with a soy/ginger/sesame sauce. It was very good with that. After hurried dinner I had it with some banana bread, and that was also good. It’s strong, holds up well to strong flavors. We also like those King Estate Roussanne-Marsanne with spicy Asian meals, so no surprise this worked well.
Knowing my wife’s palette, I suspected that she would not enjoy this on its own as much as with food. That’s what happened. She liked it with her snacks after coming home from work, and commented it held up well with sweet, and the banana bread. But sitting on the couch doing her evening warm-down, it did not excel for her.
We noticed no big change whether it was near-fridge temp, or near room-temp.
We both though it much better with food, and would be a great table wine for a wide variety of foods.
This had a Chardonnay vibe like the Center of Effort Chards, for those of you who remember those. Which is a complement. But I think not as excellent as those.
There was no degradation on day 2. I suspected there would not be, but I wanted to make sure, and this has a little age on it. Not surprising for these varietals to be holding up just fine, but I wanted to make sure.
Some of you will most definitely like this on its own more than we did. I recognized that right off. We’ve had a lot of whites that others love to just sit and sip, that we only appreciate with food. A common occurrence.
After our evaluation, I decided that although I would recommend this wine and point out its good points, we are already well stocked on whites, and especially Chardonnay and Chard-like wines that we would enjoy with food but not necessarily on its own.
However, after seeing the very low price, I’m considering this. We’ve got our daughters wedding coming up, and some folks will absolutely love this. Hmmm, we’re going to serve either Mexican or BBQ, and this is a white that will hold up to both. And it’s certainly cost effective! Hmmmm. I’ll decide tomorrow. I’m probably going to try to split a case with a local buddy. Crazy to not add these to the mix for wedding wine; some folks will absolutely love this.

@pupator Your review may not have glowed, but does sound like an honest appraisal of an honest wine - which is what Casemates is all about.
Fortunately, I’m light on “unoffensive whites”, and have room for a few more:
