The Talley family has been in the SLO Coast area since 1948 and has long-standing relationships with some of the best Paso Robles vineyards around, which enables us to bring these special offerings to you today. Both wines are normally Wine Club Member exclusives but for a limited time you can get access to both of these wines through this special offer. With less than 250 cases made of each, these bottlings are made to represent our cool climate style of winemaking with the robust fruit you find in the Paso Robles region.

So great to have an opportunity to be a rat again! And on a Friday, with a bottle I have to drink tonight. As usual, I got the UPS notice (and later the bottle) before the lab rat email but since I don’t have any open orders, I figured (hoped) it would be a lab rat bottle. I wondered how much time I’d have, but on a Friday we’re going to drink it tonight anyway, right? Email showed up a bit after delivery though.
A bottle of Bishop’s Peak Petite Sirah. Some history: I never had petite sirah before I joined the previous website, where there were many fans (thank you!), but I listened, bought, tasted & enjoyed - so I am excited to try this one. Also, I’m not an articulate taster, but I’ll do my best!
It’s dark red, as I’d expect. First sniff, a bit sharp & needs a bit more air. A few swirls, the edge has mellowed and I get a nice fruit small (spouse agrees) - dark berries? Maybe cherry/blueberry. Earthy & fruity, medium finish, more dry than sweet.
Frozen pizza is on the menu for a lazy end of week meal. That combo is ok, but we agreed that this is a wine that would probably pair better with a steak, or a burger.
After a couple hours later: nose is richer & fruitier, and more cherry. Fruit is more pronounced on tasting as well, and sweeter. Finish is shorter but still dry, which I prefer.
Overall, we like it. We don’t generally keep wines around for long so can’t say if this would would be good for that.
2018 Bishop’s Peak Petite Verdot, Paso Robles, Margarita Vineyard
Pop-n-pour: Average bottle, composite cork - pulled out smoothly with little saturation. I could smell the fruit immediately. Poured, swirled and stuck my nose in, getting slight alcohol (13.9%) and lots of fruit, darker fruits. Color is a dark maroon, all the way to the edge, and fairly opaque.
Immediate first taste yields a fairly thin mouthfeel, but flavor saturates the palate. The fruit flavors are mostly in the ethereal higher octaves, with just enough bass to keep it interesting. I don’t taste a lot of oak, but this wine seems more, say…Italian/even a bit old-world (but with acid levels in check), and doesn’t need it. The finish has a pleasant flavor and is quite drying. SWMBO says: “This is the best wine we’ve ever gotten to taste”, and “it would be a great food wine”, and I agree.
I checked Cellartracker and didn’t find this wine, but other Bishop’s Peak wines were available, scored reasonably well, and were priced right.
I found this wine at Talley Vineyards’ website. From their description, I can absolutely identify the lifted fruit flavor as strawberry, and on first taste, I thought…”a really flavorful Pinot Noir”. At the winery, this wine goes for $34. At $15 this would be a case buy/everyday drinker.
Finally, a dinner of take-out Italian.
The Petite Verdot went well with Pasta with Vodka Sauce, Marinara and a Steak Sandwich.
I thank Alice and all the other hardworking folks at Casemates for sending us such a delicious Friday treat.
@FritzCat In the interest of “taking one for the team”, I had to give y’all a day-2 taste. Still very good. Lots of Cranberry now. At $15, this is quite a deal…and with PS to boot. Gotta love Casemates.

@kitkat34 I didn’t even realize there was a link!
This made me look, though, and the normal protocol appears to still be to include shipping to Texas as part of the “SRP”. But there are plenty of typos and some exceptions where the screenshot doesn’t seem to include shipping. Odd.
We have cousins who live in the SLO area and were club members at Talley for many years until they had to quit for medical reasons. We went in with them several times and the wine was always impressive. These prices are well below their club prices from 5 or more years ago. I am willing to go for 1/2 a case if any SoCal people want some.
New to CaseMates this year…is there any way to delay shipping in the summer? Because it won’t be safe to ship wine here in Texas for another 5-6 months.
@ekwartler No delays, but WD has a summer shipping system. Things go in cold chain to a regional hub and then are 1-2 days from delivery at that point. Some think it’s sufficient while others do not. Obviously ymmv.
I’m in SoCal, so there’s no changes to the regular shipping since we’re only 2 day shipping from Sonoma.
@ekwartler A few years ago I took three bottles of a good red (forget what) and put one in the trunk in Orlando for the summer, froze one in the freezer, and left the other in my 58 degree cellar. At the end of the summer they were served blind to an experienced wine group of 12 people. They were not even told they were the same wine. They mostly thought they were the same, or related clones, and they tasted and smelled very similar. The winner by popular vote turned out to be the trunk wine. Since then I’ve become a lot less concerned about shipping wines I intend to drink within a few years.
@ekwartler@salcorn I think the bigger issue is how the wines will age, as heat accelerates the aging process. If it’s drink now, probably not a major concern.
@ekwartler first off thanks for joining the fun! starting in June, we’ll move everything via 2 day transit. we have found this to be effective. but yes, it’s your call.

At $442/case, that’s a “Baker’s Dozen”, lol. Should be $408.
@kitkat34 The “official” price comparison includes shipping to somewhere in the middle of the country.
@klezman nope, the bot’s link shows 7+6 in the shopping cart. Someone fat-fingered
@kitkat34 @klezman
'mats actually follow these links!?

@klezman @rjquillin first time I did. There was no chit-chat for this offer so I read, more than usual
Never say no to Petite Sirah. Case me!

@davirom I can take up to 4 if it helps
Randomly saw the Pinot from this brand in a local wine shop this morning.

@klezman Thanks. Unfortunately, even a day or two outside of climate control in the summer here could kill a case of wine.

I belonged to Talley’s club and the wines were always good. They have a superb tasting room definitely worth a visit.

Huh! Arrived today, without me ever getting a notification that it had shipped. Time travel?
Same here, arrived today and still shows processing on website. Surprise Surprise.
Well received it Friday, then last night (Tuesday) received notice it shipped and 18 minutes later received notice it was delivered…
I should’ve bought another case, this stuff is fantastic.
Will this ever be available again? Should have ordered three cases!!!
