This is my 8th release of this Grenache from this unheralded vineyard located near Los Alamos.
This wine is a rather ‘showy’ Grenache - soaring aromatics with fruit and spice up front and center - but is not overblown at all. And this wine has a great structure as well - the tannins are prominent and show off the ‘completeness’ of this variety.
The 2014 Grenache came in on October 15th and even though I didn’t get as much as I was hoping for, I was really happy about this fruit. The fermentation was slow and steady and after pressing, the wine was aged for 34 months in older French oak barrels, never racked or taken out of the barrel until just before bottling. It’s a bit lighter in color and structure from my previous vintage but still just as powerful and alluring. Note that I only made about 95 cases.
2014 marked the first of three very warm and dry years in our area, leading to an earlier-than-usual harvest. The grapes for this wine, which usually don’t ripen for me until early November, were picked by mid-October. That said, I was really happy with the quality of the fruit - flavors, acid levels, and color. The grapes were 100% whole cluster foot stomped by me, then fermented with the stems, pressed, and barreled down to older French oak barrels, where the wine remained for 34 months, unracked until just before bottling.
I love the expressiveness of this wine, both aromatically and texturally, and pair it regularly with a variety of foods, including basic burgers and pizza to more complicated red meat dishes. The aromatics jump out of the glass, so sometimes I’ll just sit and smell it for hours (seriously!)

3x 2014 tercero Grenache, Watch Hill Vineyard Case:
The idea for tercero wines surfaced a number of years back. Larry Schaffer had been in the music, education and trade publishing industries for a number of years and had achieved all he had set out to do. It was time for a change . . . . but to what? His first thought – a professional volleyball player? But alas, Larry is simply a bit height challenged, so it was time for Plan B – get into the wine business. The initial thought was to go into wine sales, but his thoughts quickly turned to challenging himself and taking on classes he never wanted to take as an undergraduate at UC Berkeley – those dreaded science classes. Not only did he take them on but he conquered them, transferred to UC Davis, and got his Master’s Degree in Viticulture and Enology in 2005.
After graduating, Larry and his family began a new chapter in their lives, relocating to the Santa Ynez Valley, where he became Enologist for Fess Parker Winery, a well-respected winery that makes a LOT of wine. Why here? The winemaking community was willing and wanting to help each other, but more importantly, it was simply an incredible place to raise children and live life!
A year after starting there, Larry was ready to ‘take the plunge’ and start buying grapes to make his own wines! It was scary and challenging at the same time – no matter how much you read about it or do it for others, it’s quite different when it’s ‘your own baby’ . . . But it was also a way for Larry to ‘marry’ his past with his present – to use his sales/marketing skills along with his technical winemaking skills to see what he could produce . . .

Ah and premonition of a Grenache coming soon, was conveyed subtly last night. Thank you. Yes, I’ve been waiting and love the price points. With that, the simple question is, and before any reviews, how is this wine aging and does it still have time left in the bottle? Excited to see this.
@tercerowines Larry from the video and some of the CT reviews it sounds like this might still be evolving. Would you agree? Any idea of when it will peak? Thanks!
@StingingJ as I said below, this one is drinking beautifully now, but still has plenty of structure to allow it to age for a good number of years still. It’s kind of like that wonderful candy - you can enjoy it now or later.
@InFrom@klezman remember - this is a friggin 2014 - most current wines are 2020s and 2021s. You are basically either purchasing wines that are meant to be consumed NOW or you are in essence purchasing ‘futures’. I’ve aged this for you - and therefore the extra $$$. Hope that makes sense…
@InFrom@klezman@tercerowines regarding ‘ price bump last month’ no I don’t think there is a general increase. It varies for each offer. For example a recent sparkling offer had a very small % differential. Obviously packing and shipping costs get absorbed into that, and yes as a customer on this site it can be confusing but in this case I’ll trust it — the motivation being let’s move these cases!
Alice reached out and asked if I was available to provide a last minute Rat Report for the Friday offer and I was more than happy to oblige. As a warning/disclaimer, I don’t drink a ton of Grenache (perhaps I should) so I don’t have a great point of reference for comparisons.
First Impressions (Pop and Pour through about 1 hour):
*Visual: Clear, deep garnet color with no signs of bricking. As usual I will comment on the “legs”…narrow and far spaced and very slow to develop on swirling. I don’t know what that truly translates to.
*Nose: A really nice combo of dark red fruit…dark strawberry (you know, the ones that don’t look anemic), raspberry, maybe blackberry, and some lovely earthy notes. After about 30 minutes there seems to be a nice floral note developing. I can’t identify a specific flower but at this point I could just sit and sniff it for hours and be satisfied. It’s extremely aromatic, almost perfumey (in a good way).
*Taste: Mirrors the nose with dark berries and earth. It’s a bit tart (pleasingly so) and has a nice full, round mouthfeel. I’m really diggin’ it so far.
Dinner consists of some pulled pork and mashed potatoes (no green stuff tonight). The food seems to bring out more of the earth/herbal notes and mute the fruit. The fruit does come back a few sips after any bite of food. I’d call it medium-full bodied, medium finish. Tannins are present, but not intrusive. I imagine this has some years left to safely hold/age, but I will leave analysis that for Larry to chime in,
1-3 hours:
Nose: Mostly unchanged. Vacillates between dark berry and earthy notes.
At this point, I’ve tried it with a few other snacks I managed to scrounge up in the kitchen:
Cashews: Meh…doesn’t do much for me
Cheese: The only cheeses I had handy were manchego, provolone, and muenster. Personally, neither the provolone nor muenster enhanced the experience for me. Pairs nicely with manchego.
Chocolate: Nice with both milk and dark (or maybe I just wanted chocolate??)
I didn’t try it with one of my usual tests (Cherry Pop Tarts) but in my head, I think it would pair nicely!
All in all, first night impression: Nice, complex grenache with an amazing aromatic profile. I don’t think my dinner choice was ideal. I imagine a nice pork roast or something grilled might be a better choice than the BBQ/pulled pork.
On that note, I need to wander off to bed. I have to be up at 5:30-ish for an early meeting. I have plenty left for some Day 2 tasting, however that won’t happen until fairly late in the day tomorrow. Sadly, they frown upon drinking wine at work (even on Fridays!!). I will do my best to report back when I get home from work and will try to check in periodically during the day to see if anyone has any questions.
As always, thanks to WD, Alice, the WCC Crew, and Larry (of course!) for the opportunity to contribute to the Lab Rat program, which sets CaseMates apart from all of the other discount wine sites and makes this place so special!
Cheers! KH
PS: pardon any typos (I hate my new glasses)
@losthighwayz this is now currently a library wine, my friend. My new 2015 Grenache from the Larner Vineyard and my 2020 Grenache from the Spear Vineyard are my current releases …
@tercerowines Just got back from a three day trip wine tasting in your neck of the woods. Glad we decided to skip the $80 per person The Hilt/Jonata tasting (with no fee waiver with purchase) so I can now justify purchasing this insanely priced case of Grenache!
And just an FYI - illl be taking a break soon as my 15 month old daughter Georgia is getting ready for bath/bedrime. I will stay on here until then - and then will jump back on later.
Thanks so much for the support and love so far! Cheers!
In for a case split with a friend, thanks Larry.
I have a bottle left from a Casemates purchase back in 04/22, will pop that open with Flannery Hangers tomorrow evening.
@tercerowines Temecula. Trying to clear up the week to try and make reservations for the dinner at Clean Slate. That’s the week after Julefest I believe so maybe since it’s easier to get a hotel after that is over. Anything down towards SD coming up? Last I saw was in Palos Verdes, which we couldn’t make. You were doing some things with the Solzman’s a while back, but they’re all catering now
Welp, in for a case. Grabbed one of the PS offering a few hours ago too. A little heavily discounted wine therapy for the breakup I’m going through. Wine rack isn’t going to restock itself. Really looking forward to this one.
/giphy surging-deranged-strudel
@tercerowines curious why you no longer make Watch Hill Grenache? Also, I believe I purchased some Watch Hill Syrah from Montemar this past weekend
Are multiple varietals grown in this vineyard?
@losthighwayz I purchased Grenache from this vineyard from 2006 until 2015 but then just moved on to either sites. And this vineyard is definitely better known for Syrah - Montemar makes a killler one as does Andrew Murray…
@stevers good question - he’s a fantastic winemaker and I have the greatest reject for him as a winemaker and a mentor. That said, we make wine in very different styles…
I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve tried from this winery and Larry is awesome. I actually have a bottle of this in my cellar. I’m planning to pop it tonight, but not waiting on this offer as I expect it will sell out before then. Will try and post a tasting note later if time allows.
I’ve had this one, I think from a mixed case I got. First, this is an incredible wine. Second, watch the video! This wine changes completely with an hour or so of air. In for a case so I can stop hoarding my last few bottles.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: tax and shipping are not included in savings calculations).
2014 tercero Grenache - $120 = 37.50%
Cases sold out and to buy a “3” feels like a ripoff in comparison. One downside to this pricing strategy. I understand an extra $2-4 per bottle to cover fixed costs but this one is silly. So while I’d typically be happy with a 3 here it’s a pass.
@SDL3 just remember that this is a $60 bottle of wine. Even the three pack is a tremendous deal in all honesty. But I completely understand your logic here as well.
@SDL3@tercerowines and it’s also worth noting this is well below club pricing even at the 3-pack price. As a long time club member I always pick these up when I can at prices like this. Doesn’t matter how much Tercero I’ve got at home at that point.
Well I just can’t help myself, I don’t feel right not posting some type of useless information. A tasting note from WineBerserkers from someone whose palate I have no idea:
Beautiful 8 year old Grenache from @larry_schaffer ! Aromas of ripe strawberries, blood orange, spice, and white pepper on the nose. Great texture on the palate with tastes similar to the nose. Great acidity that balances with the tannins and gives lift and energy near the end of the palate and into the extremely long finish. Watch Hill Vineyard in the Alisos Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.

Once more again, it blows living on the other side of the country. Can’t there be some cases held back for us East Coast Casemate Kickstarter backer/VMP-lifers like they do on Meh??? LIFE IS NOT FAIR!!!
Last minute rat here - who said she’d get up early to post her review and slept RIGHT through her alarm.
It looks like a lot of you guys don’t even need to be convinced to pick this up, but just in case you’re still on the fence, here’s my take.
I’m dead serious when I say I’m a last minute rat. Alice reached out to me and said I’d be getting the bottle Thursday and it went up on Friday. Totally doable. Except I forgot that Thursday after work is yoga and then grocery shopping, and I usually get my rattage around noon, so I have plenty of time.
It’s also still warm enough where I am that anything that sits on a delivery truck is uncomfortable to drink.
So of course, I get this delivery at 4:45 - see that it’s a red, remember that reds should be at room temp (usually), and chuck it in the fridge anyway.
I never said I was smart about wines.
I wasn’t going to be eating dinner so late after getting home, but since I was at the grocery store, I did pick up a few nibbles to try with this bottle: Rosemary spiced cashews, some yogurt covered blueberry and nut trail mix thing, and some stinky cheese.
I’m not sure what came over me, but I grabbed the bottle out of the fridge, opened it, and took a swig straight from the bottle. Let me tell you. This was SHOCKINGLY good, even without all of that fancy schmancy pouring into a glass stuff.
Heavy raisin/blackberry/REAL strawberry (not that Driscoll garbage) with a nice touch of black pepper. It’s very smooth and felt more like a summer pool wine than what I’ve been told a red should be, so I grabbed the rosemary cashews and ripped the bag open.
And there I stood in the kitchen - shoving cashews into my mouth with one hand, drinking out of an open bottle of wine with the other. I was living my best trashy life at that moment and I had NO RAGRATS.
I eventually poured myself a glass and hopped on the googles to read more about Grenache and was relieved to find out that it’s best chilled and I didn’t ruin it by putting it in the fridge.
And this stuff feels nice in your mouth. I usually have wine and say ‘ok, that’s wine. It tastes xyz’ but this wine FEELS like velvet soft silk. It’s luscious. It lingers - in a great way.
Oh man, and the rosemary cashews with this…chef’s kiss
I figured I’d let it sit out on the counter overnight to come to room temp so I could try it the way “reds are supposed to be”.
So yes, I’m drinking it with breakfast (smoked salmon + everything bagel seasoning + capers + eggs + spinach + onions) and it’s fantastic. It’s less potent warm than it was straight from the fridge - but that could also be the overwhelming power of the red onions as well. Still works, still yummy.
It’s also REALLY HARD to limit myself to a less than half a glass at 8:30 in the morning, but I do have to work!
I want to try this wine with some mulling spices when it’s finally winter. The price point per bottle for a case is about the same of reds I usually pick up for my mulling wines, but they’re nowhere near as decadent as this.
I’ve already sent a few messages to friends asking if they want to split a case or two - and it looks like a few folks are interested.
I had to pull the trigger on a case. Thanks winedavid for the adds. That being said if anyone wants a few I’m in the Bay Area peninsula. I’ve got to say the strawberry flavors of grenache make it one of my favorites, so I’m excited to hear that they’re a prominent feature.
Any idea how this would do as a Thanksgiving wine?
Hey all - just another note of thanks to @winedavid49, @wccwinegirl, and the entire Casemates family! You’ll see me back again sooner rather than later…
@KitMarlot well, you should know by now that I’m never truly a stranger to the site. And as far as values go, I think my wine is well worth the money at full price hint hint.
while I was away and when I asked them to hold at the UPS location for pickup, they said pickup is not available. Also tried for UPS to hold them at another UPS location from where I can pickup, but they said only the sender can request for that.
Currently it shows the package is being sent back to the sender. Kindly Help!

Wow, absolutely killer case price on a killer wine (well, at least I’ve enjoyed the 2013 vintage of this)! Thanks Larry!!
@klezman you are welcome!!! Now let’s sell this puppy out quickly!
@klezman @tercerowines would love to have a case, but no Kansas!

So excited for these offers! These prices are absolutely killer - as is this wine!
Watch the video I posted, listen to my audio - and out in either some swing pop or ska tonight folks!

Brutal price differential on the 3-pack.
@InFrom gotta get that case - but that 3 pack price is still great - this wine is normally $60 a bottle … and remember, I’m a very very small winery
@InFrom @tercerowines yeah, I noticed that price bump last month
@tercerowines All true! Also true that your wine is great, at least the ones I’ve tried.
Trying to enlist a couple of nearby friends to join in. My solo case-buying days are behind me.
@InFrom @klezman remember - this is a friggin 2014 - most current wines are 2020s and 2021s. You are basically either purchasing wines that are meant to be consumed NOW or you are in essence purchasing ‘futures’. I’ve aged this for you - and therefore the extra $$$. Hope that makes sense…

@klezman 1/3?
@cortot, you and me?
serious-vivid-butter
or just 50/50
@CorTot @rjquillin does that mean you already bought? I’m in for 4 or 6, sure.
Could also add @davirom
@CorTot @davirom @klezman @rjquillin I split with @davirom
@CorTot @davirom @klezman @losthighwayz @rjquillin May have to get a 2nd case then …
@davirom @klezman @rjquillin I’ll help you two out and take 4 if there’s interest in a 3 person split.
@CorTot @davirom @rjquillin sounds good
@CorTot @klezman headed to klez, 3-way

Watched the video and prompted me to order a case - which I just did. Excited about this one
@Leatherchair thank you - and if you have any questions, ask away!!!

Ya’ll should do the same!
Now for the cat tax!
Who wants to tell her about the cases??
Yikes! Now I’m going to have to keep checking for some freed up.
Sad to not have been an ‘early-enough bird’.
@benguin986 or late one depending upon where you live working to see what we can do…
@benguin986 a few more cases just added
Any chance of more cases being released?
Thanks for the fantastic love and support all - working with David to see what we can do…
Woke up and cases are sold out? I can see why! Killer offer Larry. I will keep checking back to see if more cases are added.

@TimW I figured it out and it worked.
Grrrr
Let’s sell this whole thing out folks!!! Thank you all once again
@tercerowines Good job!
Is that it on cases? It seems I missed both the initial one and the release of a few more.
Cases gone again, so lit up SC for 3 bottles.

@InVinoVeritas Hello, my friend!
How am I missing the added cases?
Ditto! Guess I’ll just keep hitting refresh and see what happens. Cheers!
The three pack with that coupon is a great deal too:)

@CruelMelody wow I must have gotten the last 3
@CruelMelody I thought that coupon was only for a case!
@InFrom oh dang I didn’t mean to take advantage of a glitch. I’ll buy another case soon to make up for it
@CruelMelody I was going to use it for a 3 but didn’t even try it.
Dangit, all gone.
Hey all - just another note of thanks to @winedavid49, @wccwinegirl, and the entire Casemates family! You’ll see me back again sooner rather than later…
@tercerowines how about in a week or so?
@tercerowines Don’t be a stranger, especially if you are able to offer this kind of value!
@KitMarlot well, you should know by now that I’m never truly a stranger to the site. And as far as values go, I think my wine is well worth the money at full price hint hint.
More, please!

So sad I missed this! If anyone in so cal still wants to split/ unload some of the case, please let me know!
@tercerowines, @Winedavid49, Help please!
UPS Tried to deliver the case https://casemates.com/tracking/1Z488W56A842879902
while I was away and when I asked them to hold at the UPS location for pickup, they said pickup is not available. Also tried for UPS to hold them at another UPS location from where I can pickup, but they said only the sender can request for that.
Currently it shows the package is being sent back to the sender. Kindly Help!
