2019 the girls in the vineyard Pinot Grigio, Mendocino
Tasting Notes
Call it Pinot Grigio or Pinot Gris… we couldn’t care less… It is delicious by any name. Honeysuckle and citrus with a pinch of apple will jump out before you’ve finished your first sip. There is enough minerality to make it interesting without feeling like you just licked a river rock. (You know you did that as a kid, you can admit it. We are all friends here.) The mouth-watering freshness brings with it secondary characteristics of honeyed melon and a touch of spice on the finish. Don’t take our word for it… try it for yourself. If you don’t find yourself reaching for a second glass then… we will lick those river rocks. It’s a bet, do we have a deal?
Rich, ripe peaches and green apples are followed by soft almond and fresh honeysuckle as the bouquet builds in the glass. The texture is medium-bodied and crisp, not vapid and thin like other Pinot Grigios. Subtle peaches & cream are met with flavors of nectarine, soft watermelon, and a minerality reminiscent of fresh beach air.
Winemaking: The grapes are harvested early in the morning to keep them cold going to press. The wine is predominantly composed of free-run juice, with a small addition of the lightly pressed juice added.
Pairings: Fresh Caprese salad, linguine, and clams in light buttercream, ceviche, sashimi, eggs benedict with sundried tomato Hollandaise.

It started 20 years ago with an opportunity to work for a craft brewer in Western Australia. Showing up in Australia with a degree from the University of California, a good work ethic, and a “can do” spirit was the perfect combination of right place-right time. After three years down under, Kat moved back to the US and her husband, Australian Rob McDonald quickly followed.
They founded Old Bridge Cellars and began importing the legendary Australian wines they both loved…d’Arenberg, Jasper Hill, Yarra Yaring, Leeuwin Estate. Along the way, Kat took a break and went to law school, they planted vineyards in both Australia and the Napa Valley and began making their own wines including the eponymous named Mak.
In 2008, they founded Art+Farm Wine in Napa. Art+Farm is home to their single vineyard wines the girls in the vineyard, their outrageous blends-The Messenger, and their true varietals: Circadia.
Kat and Rob live in Napa with their two children and an odd-looking creature that is supposed to be a dog. Kat is a little obsessed with her heritage breed chickens and the eggs they lay and also her bees. Rob is obsessed with compost and growing the perfect tomato. Both are huge proponents of dry farming and see water as the single biggest factor in the future of agriculture.

THE GIRLS need to maybe spend a little less time in the vineyard, and a little more time spell checking their label. This is a typical Mendoicno [sic] Pinot Grigio, which is to say… pretty good.
When I first pulled the bottle out of the box, I thought it was a rose. Just the skins left in contact a little longer than other whites? The color on this is a blush-pink hue in the bottle, and lightens up when poured into a Casemates branded stemless glass.
I drank it refrigerator cold. Notes of Elderberry and… grapefruit? Not lemon or lime, but “other” citrus that I couldn’t quite pin down. It’s very crisp, with a nice high acidity. That combined with the cold temperature gives it a medium-fast finish, feeling a little narrow and attenuated. Really easy to drink, we had it with gyros and greek salad, and it paired nicely. Surprisingly. But I think it would pair with anything or nothing, maybe even something spicier.
Note: I’m typing this before looking at the listing and the price. I’m estimating the retail to be ~$15, so it’ll probably about $10 on here. And unfortunately, I’ve got an absolutely deep list of wine at that price point that are both more memorable and more enjoyable. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed this wine. You put a few on ice for a day at the lake, and they’ll be thoroughly enjoyed. So if you need some ready-sippers, you can’t go wrong here. They’re just not standouts in a crowded room. Update: Now that I’m looking at the price and see I’m about right, I’m going to ask my wife if she’s in for a half case.

We can heartily attest to the freshness and thirst quenching abilities of this wine. And at our incredible price of just $12.49 a bottle you can afford to stock up!
The 2019 The Girls In The Vineyard Mendocino Pinot Grigio opens with a fresh, full and inviting aroma of peaches, watermelon, honeysuckle, tangerine and more! It’s an inviting start.
Taking a sip reveals a summer porch pounder with lots of juicy watermelon notes plus other flavors similar to the nose. Light to medium bodied with a wonderful smooth texture, good balance and good acidity, this is summer in a bottle and it’s still going strong at 4 years old.
It ends dry and crisp with a bit of lingering minerality on the mouth watering finish. I’d give this one another 1-2 years of prime drinking but I doubt you’ll be able to keep your hands off it for that long anyway so it’s probably a moot point!
Wine Enthusiast:
88 Points. A hint of pink in the color and unusually ripe, floral flavors help this medium-bodied wine stand out. It’s mouthfilling, smooth and full of peach and plums flavors. — Jim Gordon 3/1/21
VERY late LabRat here. Explanation and groveling below, but the TLDR is the wine made me say “Oh, Yummy!” when I took the first sip cold out of the fridge.
Ok. Groveling. My older son got engaged last night. I - flat out - forgot to post. SOOO SORRY!!!
Here’s the more detailed review. Straight out of the fridge, the wine was just lovely. There were floral notes, but nothing overtly floral. Fruit (apple/pear) notes but nothing overtly fruity. Lemonish, but just enough lemonish. a hint of earth. it wasn’t too acid, it wasn’t too dry, it wasn’t too, well, anything. Which made it a truly, lovely experience to drink. And don’t think it was boring. It just blended the nuances together so well, that you kind of kept sipping it to see exactly what it IS that is so very tasty. We sipped at it with Thai red curry salmon burgers and veggies and it was fantastic. Alas, the sippage (and the fact that I shared half the bottle with the tallest one) meant that I both didn’t leave any for day two, but does anyone, really? and I completely forgot to take a photo.
One of the truly fascinating things about this wine is the color. It’s almost a pale peach color. In fact, at first, I thought maybe it was “off” from the color, but clearly, based on my review, it was normal. And it was gorgeous. (Again, just lovely.)
The tallest one said, if it’s less than $10, 100% buy it. So, I’ll be picking up at least one case.
So anyway, buy this wine. Oh, and we’re thrilled about the engagement!! It’s awesome and I couldn’t be happier. Just in case you were wondering. now back to cooking for the impromptu engagement party tomorrow.

“Mendoicno” on the label…I’m guessing that’s one reason why this is on Casemates/Meh???
