Our 2013 California Merlot is filled with aromas of sweet cherry, pomegranate, cinnamon toast and dried sage. On the palate, juicy dark fruit flavors of blackberry, plum and dark cherry are joined by notes of black olive and sassafras. Boo, would be in for a case if it shipped to PA. There’s been a lot not shipping here lately, guess the honeymoon of include as many states as possible has passed.
@jml326 Philly. Trading/splitting with out of state people is a bit harder as I don’t drive, so unless they want to come into center city, hauling wine on the trains is obnoxious.

I received the email announcing a bottle of wine winging its way to me to rat on Wednesday and hastily changed its course so that I would make sure to pick it up from the closest FedEx holding point on Thursday. It was immediately set to chill so that DH and I could enjoy a glass sans food that evening and another glass with dinner.
I would like to note that he and I have somewhat differing tastes in beverages. DH happens to be one of those people who is exceptionally adept at tasting bitter and tends to be sensitive to it. He prefers wine that is more fruity and lighter as a general rule, though there are exceptions, and avoids Chardonnay (he finds it too buttery and the if it has been oaked gives him a headache). One of the few reds he truly enjoys is Tempranillo and he loves Twisted Oak (as do I). I however tend to favor bigger, bolder, heartier reds though it isn’t all I drink. I enjoy a nice Pinot Noir (Testarossa, Boedecker) and an occasional white. Honestly, neither of us typically drink Merlot. So, I thought it might be useful to have a frame of reference for what we like to drink and please remember this is just an opinion of people who aren’t professional wine tasters…
I looked up absolutely nothing about the wine before we tasted it as I didn’t want our opinion to be biased. It was probably a bit too chilled when I poured our first glasses but oh well… it was a dark reddish brown in the glass, just shy of murky. It smelled fruity, like cherries, and tasted crisp and tart. Dry (little to no residual sugar as well as dry on the tongue) and the tannins pretty much sucked the moisture right out of my mouth. As it came to temperature it reminded me of drinking an alcoholic version of no sugar added cranberry/cherry juice. DH described it as “tart on the tongue and sour, not bad sour, just sour. Tangy.” Neither of us thought it had a strong alcohol scent which would have put DH off right away.
Later, we each had a glass that had some time to breathe and warm back up with a dinner of BBQ seasoned turkey burgers and riced cauliflower with sweet potatoes. I thought it paired nicely with the meal and DH thought that it simply held its own - he felt that it tasted the same when sipped alone earlier in the evening as it did when he had it alongside his meal. He wasn’t wrong. As I would expect from a Merlot, you can just as easily enjoy it on its own or with food.
Neither of us was enamored with this particular wine though that may very well be because it doesn’t fall in line with our normal drinking habits. It seems to be a solid offering, depending on price which I don’t know at the time of writing this review, and if it helps (or hinders) we both agreed that it would be the kind of wine that might be considered a “house wine” at a good restaurant or the “red wine choice” at a large gathering where your wine choices are “red or white”.
If you made it this far, congratulations! And please remember to be kind - it was our first time as LabRats.
Oh, and price seems on point for what we got out of the bottle.

Casemates doesn’t dictate which states can receive the wine. That’s entirely based on what licenses the winery has.
@Jamileigh17 im to lazy to look if i or anyone has asked. Where in pa are you?
@kawichris650 I know, but they’d been REALLY good about finding ones that shipped to a lot of states at first.

@Maurgen nice job!
What a great review. I love Labrats.
@Winedavid49 Thanks! DH and I did our best.
@Maurgen Fantastic review, thanks it was appreciated.
@Winedavid49 wanna give us any insider background on this label?
A bit generic and mysterious for my taste.
While this doesn’t float my boat, I really appreciated @Maurgen 's incredible Labrat review.
Also happy to see @Winedavid49 address the “Where are the cheap cases” thread.
@InVinoVeritas, thank you!
@InVinoVeritas If anyone orders merlot, I’m leaving.
SW Michigan here, going to take a gamble for a case at this price. If anyone wants to split, let me know!
@chipgreen nice work!
Here I was ready for my very first Casemates order… “We don’t ship to Arizona”.
