2018 Ty Caton TyTanium, Caton Vineyards, Sonoma Valley
Tasting Notes
This sophisticated wine opens with alluring aromas of wild black cherry, anise, and cocoa. Deep indigo tones lead to a soft, silky generous mouth feel accompanied by flavors of dark fruit and toasted oak. Layered, complex flavors remain lingering on the palate with an exceptionally long finish. Perfect for any occasion, this wine pairs beautifully with filet mignon or Portobello mushrooms.

@buffaloroam@klezman
According to CT, I paid $50 per bottle for the 2009 Tytanium from WW in 2012 and $48 for the 2012 Tytanium from WineSpies in 2015, so I guess the $30 days were well before my time!
@MarkDaSpark I get up to Dallas every so often from Houston if you would hang on to them. It’s a little rich for me to take a dominant portion but I’d take two and could find myself convinced for four.
Wow had to look, my first wine that I bought from WW was this in November 2009 for $74.99 for a 2 pack and I bought it because everybody was raving about how good it was
I like Ty Canton wines, the the last couple of offerings were to $$ for my tastes but this offering is bizzare, it’s a blend for this price, sorry but IMHO this offering is way over priced
@TomRaz Well, don’t knock the blend. Bordeaux are typically “blends” and they have no problem with quality or premium pricing.
I’m still very much a QPR buyer and I’m not sure there’s a “Q” that my palate could reasonably distinguish for this offering’s “P” vs. the typical Casemates and half the cost.
The great thing about Capitalism is that The Market will decide the price, which is likely why we’re not getting TyTanium at $70 for a 2-pack anymore.
@TomRaz I really understand your concerns! I’ve never used price as a quality descriptor for great wine! When my son many years ago told me about W.W.Com my 1st purchase was Ty Caton’s TyTanium! I loved it and made it an AUTOBUY. Just checked my wine tracking and since those early days, I’ve consumed over 1300 btls and have about that much in my stash. I have 34 btls of Ty’s wine, but only 3 Titanium’s, an '04, '06, & '08. For a while OH was off Ty’s wines and I notice this offer has OH on it. So with all the wine I currently have, the price, & being retired, I think I’m passing unless I can get the NEO’s involved in a case split.
@Boatman72 I really do like Ty Canton wines and have bought many offerings in the WW days, but their price seems to have crept up and I think this offering is a bit high for my tastes, but those of you that go for it I am sure you will be very pleased.
Wow, I looked it up and saw I got a 3 pack of a different Ty Caton wine for $63 here a few years back. I remember it was fabulous. Anxiously awaiting some rattage!
Bought the 2010 vintage back in 2012 for $35 per bottle on WW. Lovely wine that aged well, had my last bottle just last year and it was great. I think the price is very fair. Looking for any folks to split a case in the Tampa FL area.
This 2018, if you can hold 'em for a few years you’ll be happy. Like 2025 or longer. Unless he’s changed something about how he makes them. Last I had were 2009. Definitely drank like $75-$100 bottle wines for my taste.
According to wine-searcher available at Saratoga Wine Exchange in NY for $45.60 per plus the ship which is relatively reasonable. And $55 at Ed’s Fine Wines (?) in FL. So no, not cheaper but just an idea of what it is in the market, small sample as it may be.
What a treat! I received an email last Thursday from our beloved Alice asking if I could receive a wine the next day for ratting a week later. A whole week was unusual, which meant that I could stretch it over several days.
It arrived pleasantly cool, and I left it for several days in my cellar at about 54 degrees.
I popped the cork on Monday. Fairly aromatic, floral with a bit of pepper. A hint of violet at first, that shifted more toward blueberry as the days went by.
The first taste was a delight - no need to decant or let it breathe; it was eminently approachable and drinkable from the start. Dark fruits and spicy. The wine didn’t appreciably change from day to day, but I was picking up a bit more leather and dark chocolate at the end. Tannins were smooth and friendly, and the well balanced acidity gave it a very refreshing quality which seemed to call for food - and so I obliged, chopping up three kinds of pepperoni (I’m on a pepperoni kick) along with a couple of ghouda variants. Purely excellent - I just kept reaching for my glass. It was only with great restraint that I left enough to try the next day.
Which got pushed to Wednesday.
Caton’s web site suggested pairing this with a filet mignon, which I happened to have in the freezer. Wrapped it with bacon and topped it with with blue cheese and caramelized onions.
The pairing was superb - I think it was the blue cheese that the wine especially latched onto.
Thursday was a hearty beef stew; it didn’t fare quite so well, being a bit washed out by the thick gravy.
Overall: Very balanced, ready to drink, should age well. I love the wine, but it’s tough to justify the price. I definitely need to think in terms of ‘amortizing’ the rat bottle:
@CObrent@jlepard sounds good. I’m fine with a 4 way split also and taking only 2 bottles if someone else wants in or a larger quantity, but happy for 4.
If I order I’ll probably get divorced, my SO still doesn’t know the full extent of the damage from Berserker Day … So… who’s going to pull the trigger?
@jlepard@knlprez Ordered! Don’t want any divorces caused by the appearance of the Brown Van once too often! If someone else jumps in for 2, that should be fine as well (speaking to other Denver-ites), otherwise we’ll do 4 each!
@CObrent@jlepard@knlprez@kristian Do we need to start a split of a second case? I can do up to 4-5, might be able to get some friends to pitch in for a few more bottles worth too.
@CObrent@kristian I ordered a case, gonna split it with some other friends. @kristian can have the two bottles I said I would take. If that first case is already fully accounted for, I could probably spare a couple for you.
@knlprez Lots of stuff, including standbys Franny Beck, Campesino, Paetra, Sabelli-Frisch, and about 6-7 more wineries. Also olive oil, wine glasses, and beef & pork caps. Way more than planned!
@strongry So, I did order a case. I’m in Commerce Township, but work in Michigan Ave/275 area. I’d like to keep 4-6. My sister in law lives by the zoo though, so I’m sure I could work something out with the two who live by the zoo.
@angelicamw@oppsie@strongry Hello fellow Michiganders! I won’t jump in on this one, but I will say hello for future reference. I can see the zoo water tower out my front window, so we are in close proximity.
@angelicamw@kitkat34@oppsie@ronnyd@canestfr Hello, everyone. I did get the case of TyTanium. I am just checking to see who still wants bottles. I hope I didn’t miss anyone, there were quite a few messages. I was hoping to set up a meet tomorrow after work. I work in the Michigan/275 area and live in Commerce Township. Looking at previous messages/where everyone lives, meeting in the Orchard Lake/696 area (maybe in that plaza with Bonchon and Craft Brew City?) might work. I’m open to other location suggestions, though. I was thinking 5:30pm or 6:00pm. With tax, the bottles are $44.17 each.
@canestfr@kitkat34@oppsie@ronnyd@strongry I’m in the same boat. I’m on vacation until March 7. I can pay and arrange a pick up later. Or if someone can fill the need now that is okay too.
@canestfr@kitkat34@oppsie@ronnyd@strongry - Are you still on hold for us to get back from vacation? If you haven’t consumed them all by now I’m still up for meeting for a few bottles.
@angelicamw@canestfr@kitkat34@oppsie@ronnyd Hello, I am ready to meet for those interested. This weekend or next is fine. I haven’t consumed any yet. I would like to keep three.
@changhan00 Hello - what city are you in, in LA County? (I PM’d you but will post here too.) i am in San Diego County but do get to parts of LA County frequently…
If we can work out the “how to connect” to pay you & obtain the wine, I will buy into this case with you. I’ll take 6 bottles; heck I’ll take 9 bottles if no one else wants in. That’d be your 3 and I’ll take the remaining 9. (But I’m also happy with 6, too, if someone else speaks up). Let me know! Cheers~
@changhan00@CorTot yea, i’ve been pushing on the idea of providing assistance when folks suggest a split on the boards. it seems to generate some connections (and savings).
@changhan00@CorTot@Winedavid49@javadrinker@i8dacat@LorriCA So I’m happy to order this to my house. I’m in Atwater Village (Los Angeles). I’d order, ask for people to Paypal/Venmo me for their share, and then ideally people can either pick it up from me or I can travel a short distance to meet in the middle, but that’ll need to be case by case (pun intended). With this new information, chime in if you’re officially in. If I see 12 bottles claimed (3 mine, 9 from others) I’ll order this before the deal is over and confirm here.
@kushboy per your note you have 3 left. I think i’ll just buy a case ~ then i don’t have to orchestrate so much for three… I do appreciate the effort - thanks for stepping up. (even if I’m not gonna benefit) All good!
@changhan00@CorTot@i8dacat@javadrinker@kushboy@LorriCA@rjquillin@Winedavid49
I’m over-extended from BD and Sandlands. I need to skip this one, even though I might regret it in 10 years when I’d start to consider opening these.
That said, I hope to see all you new folks (and some old folks like java who seems MIA most of the time) at our next gathering, which we need to schedule!
Don’t care where they come from.
Could do one or three, but two is the sweet spot.
Klez has access to locker storage for me, so if they could make it that way logistics would be easier for me or he has some bottles if I don’t make it up…
@changhan00@i8dacat@javadrinker@klezman@kushboy@rjquillin Klez has access to storage for you? I didn’t know that. I’m holding a case for you now, so adding 1 or 2 to that stash is not a problem. I can move them to Klez sometime this year if you want that.
It looks like 2 for me, 2 for java, and 2 for Ron would work, with kush 3 and i8dacat 3. 40 minutes to go…
@changhan00@i8dacat@klezman@kushboy@merrybill@rjquillin Somehow I got knocked down to 2 bottles and called old in the same thread. Man 2022 is as rough as 2021. But I’m still in. Whisper the Venmo email addy to use and I can shoot over the appropriate doughage.
@changhan00@i8dacat@javadrinker@klezman@kushboy@rjquillin Ron, I don’t mind holding them if and when they get to me. I’m hoping they (mine and yours) get wootlegged to me (or nearer to me) or there’s a gathering later this year where the bottles can get divvyed-up.
Agonized for a few minutes… But maybe it’s better to have wine to soothe regret for the expenditure, than to have no wine to soothe the regret for not buying. In for the case.
@woopdedoo Same. Alas, down from oligarch prices to bourgeoisie prices is still too high for me. Would consider splitting a case if anyone around West MI is interested.
@woopdedoo LOL, I was thinking the same thing when I saw the offer earlier!!! OH is finally back on Ty’s list, but the case price, yikes. Trying to find a NEO split!!!
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations).
Ty Caton TyTanium Estate Red Blend - $100 = 16.65%
Hmm, just happened to have pulled a '06 out of the cellar earlier this week. Will open it tomorrow and unless something bad has happened, I expect it to be sublime.
So yeah, we were lucky enough to get tapped on the virtual shoulder to try out Ty Caton’s 2018 Tytanium. I will go on record to state I’m a Ty Caton fan. I will equally go on record to state, my wifely one, meh.
We brought the bottle over to my mom’s house to enjoy a little much needed family time with her, my sisters, and their families. It seemed like the perfect test group with whom to share our bottle. There ended up being 8 of us who partook. Wide variety of wine drinking experience and palates. Loved hearing everyone’s take on things.
Started with the nose. We got everything from “I get alcohol” to dark cherry/burnt cherry to cedar box. The waft of alcohol was fairly strong but that’s to be expected at 15% alcohol. This one’s a big one. The big legs on the glasses said as much as well.
Beautiful dark inky color in the glass. Then came the sips. Consensus was a lot of tart cherry and dark fruit right off the bat. Little bit of jamminess for some. But that’s with a quick pop and pour, no decanting. Decanting could definitely help although this wine opened up fairly quickly. After a mere 10-20 minutes it lost some of the tartnes and hit some nice black cherry notes. Some nice chewy tannins in there too.
We tried a brief experiment with a Vinturi and it did smooth out the wine but it’s not really needed. Just give it some time in a decanter and you should be good. Give it too much time (about an hour) and it starts closing up again.
Anywho, the consensus was this was a nice, easy drinking wine. We didn’t pair with a meal but everyone thought this was just screaming to have a nice charcuterie platter next to it. My personal thought is that it could do with sitting in bottle for a few more years. Heck, we’re still sitting on a 2004 Tytanium that I meant to open for cross reference but ran out of time.
Now for the elephant in the room: the price point. I don’t think the majority of the tasters in my party would feel comfortable spending $50 on a bottle like this. I get it. There are some good bargains to be had out there. I think most of them thought they were drinking a $25+ bottle and they’d be ok with that. Present company included. $50 per bottle on the two pack is tough. But the case rate, now we’re talking again. So get some friends and split a case. Then lay down the bottle until 2024 at a min.
Oooh…K. This is a long shot, but anyone in Southern Colorado area want to split a case? Talking Colorado Springs down to Pueblo area. (maybe even further south)
@bullsugar1 ok, it’s not a big net, but we sent an email out to a few folks around you. hope it works! and let’s get more casemates in southern Colorado!
I had to go in. I’m a little worried about the high alcohol content, but every bottle of TyTanium I’ve had has been stellar. Way above his other wines IMO.
If you can, buy a pair. It’ll be something just a little different, and has been universally enjoyed whenever served. I’ve enjoyed every bottle from TyCaton, purchasing a ton from W.W. as well as the winery and the tasting room while visiting from Ohio. I was an inaugural member of the Caton Cabernet Collection. The Ballfield Syrah is also worth trying. Here’s the last of a case from a tasting room purchase of an early effort, for those wanting to wax nostalgic.

Anyone in Dallas area want to split a case? Haven’t moved myself yet, but my wine has.
@MarkDaSpark I get up to Dallas every so often from Houston if you would hang on to them. It’s a little rich for me to take a dominant portion but I’d take two and could find myself convinced for four.
@MarkDaSpark Im in Austin but around Dallas occasionally. Id be interest in splits
@deadlyapp @pardough @streets455
In order of reply:
3 for streets
2 for deadlyapp
2 for pardough
Sound good?
Hopefully will move to Dallas area by April, if not sooner. I may visit Dallas sooner if you need it before then.
Costs will be whispered to you, no money needed til exchange.

Once I’m in Dallas area for good, I’ll touch base with everyone and see about swaps.
Wow had to look, my first wine that I bought from WW was this in November 2009 for $74.99 for a 2 pack and I bought it because everybody was raving about how good it was
@ScottW58 The 2006 - in November 2009. One of my early WW purchases too.

@TomRaz Caton, not Canton.
Thanks Ty

Wow, I looked it up and saw I got a 3 pack of a different Ty Caton wine for $63 here a few years back. I remember it was fabulous. Anxiously awaiting some rattage!
This is a wonderful wine-if you can afford it go for it! I wish I could. Rats consider yourself blessed.

@manny651 Wish you were in West Palm!
@manny651 i’m in Orlando but too rich for my blood unfortunately.
@GatorFL oh well… go Gators!

@rpstrong Absolutely-that is how I would justify the expense
@rpstrong Ty-hank you for the great rat report. And love the filet mignon pairing.
Is there anyone in NY metro area that would entertain a split? I hate to pass up any Ty Caton.
@Maurakid If you mean the city, and subway-accessible, I’m in Manhattan (UES) and I’ll split with you if you’re still looking to split a case.
@Maurakid I’m in Queens. If you’re in Manhattan, I’ll take 2.
@edwoz are you I. For 2 at the six price point?
If anyone in Denver orders a case, I’d be happy to take 2 - 4.
@knlprez I’d be in for a 3-way split, as well…anyone else interested?
@CObrent @knlprez I’ll take 4, 3 way Denver split

@bolligra yes, I shouldn’t… But I rarely resist buying wine! Did you score anything good?
@CObrent @kristian I ordered a case, gonna split it with some other friends. @kristian can have the two bottles I said I would take. If that first case is already fully accounted for, I could probably spare a couple for you.
@kristian @phroenips Perfect - sounds good - we will stick with our 3-way split on our end, sounds like you all are set with your case - thanks!
@knlprez Lots of stuff, including standbys Franny Beck, Campesino, Paetra, Sabelli-Frisch, and about 6-7 more wineries. Also olive oil, wine glasses, and beef & pork caps. Way more than planned!
Anyone in SE Michigan interested in splitting a case?
@strongry I’d take 4. We’re in NW Detroit, GPF specifically.
@strongry well that’s interesting - first time I noticed a geo-targeted email notification out of the blue from Casemates?!? … leading me here.
Can’t recall the last time was was here. - Pooped out long time VMP’r. (Perhaps the shit pile emoji for ex-VMP was appropriate after all.)
@strongry I got the geo email as well. Pretty cool. I would take 4. I’m by the Detroit Zoo.
@oppsie @strongry - I’m also by the zoo and would be in for a few 2/3/4 - I’m open.
@strongry So, I did order a case. I’m in Commerce Township, but work in Michigan Ave/275 area. I’d like to keep 4-6. My sister in law lives by the zoo though, so I’m sure I could work something out with the two who live by the zoo.

@canestfr @kitkat34 @oppsie @ronnyd @strongry - Are you still on hold for us to get back from vacation? If you haven’t consumed them all by now I’m still up for meeting for a few bottles.

@angelicamw @canestfr @kitkat34 @oppsie @strongry yep, I’m flexible as well.
@canestfr @kitkat34 @oppsie @ronnyd @strongry I’m good for this weekend or next as well.
@angelicamw @canestfr @kitkat34 @oppsie @ronnyd How does everyone feel about 4pm today? Is 12/Orchard Lake ok for everyone? If not today, next Friday.
Anyone is Los Angeles, Socal area want to split a case?
@changhan00 @strongry @knlprez @Maurakid LOVE all these split requests. stay tuned, we are looking to nudge some of your respective neighbors.
@changhan00 I’d do 3 bottles. I’m also VMP member so I get free shipping. Would be $539.99 total for a case (with tax)
Cheers~
@changhan00 I was nudged to participate
I’m up for 3 if available. I’ve picked up a few Ty Caton in the past and enjoy their wines.
@changhan00 none for me. Interesting email I got regarding this, interesting to see how well it works.
@changhan00 @CorTot yea, i’ve been pushing on the idea of providing assistance when folks suggest a split on the boards. it seems to generate some connections (and savings).
@changhan00 @CorTot @Winedavid49 Pimping the goods. You go WD!
@changhan00 And depending if you still need help filling the case, I’m up for 2 or 3. We’re down in the LBC.
@changhan00 @CorTot @Winedavid49 @javadrinker @i8dacat @LorriCA So I’m happy to order this to my house.
@changhan00 @CorTot @i8dacat @kushboy @LorriCA @Winedavid49 Lock me in for three if this a go.
@changhan00 @CorTot @javadrinker @kushboy @LorriCA @Winedavid49 +3 for me. I use to live in Silver Lake years ago . I pass through often so I can pick up when they arrive.
@changhan00 @CorTot @i8dacat @javadrinker @LorriCA @Winedavid49 We’re at 9 confirmed. Need someone to take 3 more!
@changhan00 @CorTot @i8dacat @javadrinker @kushboy @LorriCA @Winedavid49
I could do one or two, but I’m in San Diego, so someone up there, cortot, @klezman?, would have to pass mine on at a future date.
@kushboy per your note you have 3 left. I think i’ll just buy a case ~ then i don’t have to orchestrate so much for three… I do appreciate the effort - thanks for stepping up. (even if I’m not gonna benefit) All good!
@changhan00 @CorTot @i8dacat @javadrinker @kushboy @LorriCA @rjquillin @Winedavid49
I’m over-extended from BD and Sandlands. I need to skip this one, even though I might regret it in 10 years when I’d start to consider opening these.
That said, I hope to see all you new folks (and some old folks like java who seems MIA most of the time) at our next gathering, which we need to schedule!
@changhan00 @CorTot @i8dacat @javadrinker @klezman @kushboy @LorriCA @rjquillin @Winedavid49 If Ron is a soft 1 or 2, then I’ll take 3 and pass 1 along to Ron from the kushboy case. I’m down in OC, so if Java or i8dacat could piggy back my allocation when they get theirs, it would be appreciated. You OK with this Ron?
@changhan00 @CorTot @i8dacat @javadrinker @klezman @kushboy @LorriCA @merrybill
Don’t care where they come from.
Could do one or three, but two is the sweet spot.
Klez has access to locker storage for me, so if they could make it that way logistics would be easier for me or he has some bottles if I don’t make it up…
@changhan00 @CorTot @i8dacat @javadrinker @klezman @LorriCA @merrybill @rjquillin ok I made the order. I’m away from a computer but I’ll confirm the plan later tonight
@changhan00 @i8dacat @javadrinker @klezman @kushboy @rjquillin Klez has access to storage for you? I didn’t know that. I’m holding a case for you now, so adding 1 or 2 to that stash is not a problem. I can move them to Klez sometime this year if you want that.
It looks like 2 for me, 2 for java, and 2 for Ron would work, with kush 3 and i8dacat 3. 40 minutes to go…
@changhan00 @i8dacat @javadrinker @klezman @merrybill @rjquillin Perfect. It works out to $45 per bottle. Everyone comfortable with Venmo?
@changhan00 @i8dacat @klezman @kushboy @merrybill @rjquillin Somehow I got knocked down to 2 bottles and called old in the same thread. Man 2022 is as rough as 2021. But I’m still in. Whisper the Venmo email addy to use and I can shoot over the appropriate doughage.
@changhan00 @i8dacat @javadrinker @klezman @kushboy @merrybill
Bill, could you accept the two that have my name on them?
Unless somehow they make it to Klez.
Thanks
@changhan00 @i8dacat @javadrinker @klezman @kushboy @rjquillin Ron, I don’t mind holding them if and when they get to me.

@EJTeeee i love this sentiment!
@Winedavid49 Sometimes I bend over backwards to justify wine buying!
Dang - for once I was sort of hoping it wouldn’t ship to MI to remove the temptation.
So exciting to have the the Tytanium for the first time on Casemates. And at a screaming price point thanks to WD. What a ty-rrific deal.
@WkdPanda Don’t forget this is a one-day, Friday only, sale…
/giphy persuasive-clear-saturn
Ok I’ll pick up two.
Oh happy day, we got Ratted!

@Winedavid49 Awesome…I have been with WW and here since it started. Hope to find some peps closer than Denver.
VAN GOGH! MANGO! TANGO! AWESOME!

Dang! Missed it.
This is one if my favorites. So disappointed to miss it
Dang! So sad I missed this. If someone in Santa Cruz or the Bay Area got a case they would have wanted to split, let me know.
