2018 Ty Caton Vineyards Estate Ty’s Red, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Valley
Tasting Notes
With savory aromas and a deep luscious color, this much-loved wine strokes your palate with flavors of dark cherry, blackberry, and cassis. The thick velvety texture gives way to toasty oak and finishes with just a hint of chocolate.

Ugh. Like I need more wine haha. Yea, but a no brainer to get a case of Ty Caton. Thanks for putting this up, and glad I saw it. But my 400 bottle rack is literally full and boxes are stacking outside the wine closet. SWMBO is getting slightly unhappy (although that gets fixed each time I give her delicious wine .heheeh)
Wow, a great honor to be Lab Ratting!
After I retrieved the box from UPS in anticipation of what it was, I was ecstatic to find a Ty Caton Ty’s Red blend, flashing way back to the WW days when we first encountered Ty’s wines. It’s a wonderful blend of Syrah, Cab, Petite Verdot, Petite Sirah, and Merlot. Some of my favorite grape varietals!
Waited to open it until my lovely wife returned from a trip. I had some beef brisket burnt ends ready for dinner, leftover from the weekend, which I re-heated for us to pair with the wine.
Many of you know this wine from past releases, but for those who don’t, it goes like this:
It is a deep opaque red color in the glass.
On the nose, a nice savory peppery and dark fruit note.
On the palate it has flavors of ripe plums, dark cherry and black currant.
For mouthfeel, it’s nicely dry with a good tannic structure, and velvety smooth.
It paired beautifully with my brisket, and I could see this pairing with your favorite smoked meat, grilled ribeye, or even some duck or lamb.
In between our sampling with dinner, we participated in an online event with Traverse City Distillery of their annual Cherry Whiskey release. Holy cow, does this wine nicely complement the cherry flavors in the Traverse City Whiskey releases! Not your normal pairing, but thinking some cherry desserts would work as well with this wine.
@pupator@springbank@winedavid49 Looks like we have a threesome with each of us getting four bottles. I will place the order in the next hour unless one of you would prefer to?
If you could stop selling my favorite wines at prices that would be stupid to pass up long enough for me to drink the previous shipment, I’d really appreciate it. Heck, even long enough to receive the previous shipment.
Could you please send at same time with my infilled orders?? Will be gone after August 28, 2021 for a few weeks, no one to sign for delivery.
Thank you for your consideration.

@unifreck Warm-weather holds are not a strong suit on this site. (I don’t remember them ever happening, fwiw.) That’s a sore point for a lot of people.
In any case, a comment left here on the chat board may or may not be noticed by anyone who works for Casemates. Ordinarily I’d suggest contacting customer service if I thought it would get you the result you’re looking for, but I don’t have high hopes.
I see that the delivery window for this offer is prior to your away dates, so you should be ok (as long as you don’t miss the UPS truck on delivery day!)
@InFrom@unifreck
No kidding they shipped one of my wine orders in 100+ degree weather, and yes they will be either refunding or replacing it.
And when I alerted them on my weather issues they were like oh my is that a problem??
Before it shipped!
No sh-t, dumbo, of course it’s a problem!
I know Ty’s wines from the WW days and have always been very impressed. I don’t need more wine, but this is an automatic buy. Cellar capacity be damned. Lol
Late to the party. Reopening a school in CA is no joke! On to the wine.
Summary: new world, well integrated with smooth tannins and black fruit. Not overly complex or memorable but well made and a good buy at CM price but not sure about MSRP
Color is a deep dark red with a nice bloodish hue
Smell dark fruit. Maybe boysenberry? A tinge of tree branch and vanillin
Tannins are smooth to me but our tasting partners felt they were a bit drying on the palate
Taste is aligned with Caton’s I’ve had in the past: lots of fruit, balanced alcohol and tannins albeit a tad generic imo
I really enjoyed this with our charcuterie board and bacon wrapped dates. Goes well with food or on its own
I pegged it at $35 winery and a buy at $18-$20 on CM. I did not check pricing on Ty website either.
UPS has been wonderful to us-no complaints. That said I would love some of this but we too are overflowing (nice problem to have I guess) I am going to need to find some splitters in the Northern Virginia (Fairfax) area. Help!!
@dianefreda You’re lucky! I’m also in the Fairfax area, and I’ve now had two bad delivery experiences in a row.
I just got my Winesmith Cab Franc today. The bottles were at least 100 degrees in the box when they arrived.
Hopefully they aren’t completely cooked. I’m debating paying UPS (more) money to transfer my shipment to a store in hopes that the wine will be a normal temperature when it arrives…
Should have ratted me, I could have done a comparison to an earlier aged version.
Pretty bad when your wines are lapping themselves in the cellar. That said I’m going to see if any of my neighbors want to split a case.
@chipgreen@KCountry OK, split a case of Ty’s Cab with my daughter last time. got my neighbor on board for a split of this one. 6 bottles are easier to squeeze in somewhere than 12 !
Ty Caton is an autobuy for me. Used to be in the club, but alas, too much wine buying and not enough drinking. Love to see it at this price (basically half off!). Received today, couldn’t wait and popped and poured. Enjoying with a pork chop @texashaze made. Delightful as always. Ty Caton is a steady hand in wine making. Thumbs up.

@outdoorslife yes and yes. I need to solve the binning problem here. Or the ordering problem.

@efamily good work!
@efamily
Cherry Whiskey sounds yummy!
@efamily Thanks for the fun rattage.
@karenhynes Barrel Proof Cherry too. Real cherries!
@efamily @karenhynes I can attest to that.
@efamily Was the wine EnTYcing?
Any Atlanta peeps interested in a split?
@winstoncharles working on nudging some folks in the Atlanta area. Stand by.
@winstoncharles I’d take 3 or 4.
@pupator @springbank @winedavid49 Looks like we have a threesome with each of us getting four bottles. I will place the order in the next hour unless one of you would prefer to?
@pupator @Winedavid49 @winstoncharles
Go ahead and order. I think my wife is starting to doubt how many of these I’m splitting.
Ty Caton is always an auto buy for me
WD, great job getting the real label and not the Entycement on here! Great price, too!
If you could stop selling my favorite wines at prices that would be stupid to pass up long enough for me to drink the previous shipment, I’d really appreciate it. Heck, even long enough to receive the previous shipment.

@losthighwayz Appreciate the rattage. Good luck with the school opening.
What a nice surprise to start the day!

And that’s what I’ll do to UPS if they screw up my shipping again!

Another hot shipment arriving story…
What is the alcohol content on this? I didn’t see it listed in the description. thanks
@eastcoastmary 15.1% per specs above

@forlich
You are building Verticals (if anyone asks)
@chipgreen @forlich This. My wife no longer accepts this answer unless I open a bottle.

@chipgreen @KCountry OK, split a case of Ty’s Cab with my daughter last time. got my neighbor on board for a split of this one. 6 bottles are easier to squeeze in somewhere than 12 !
Any Baltomorons want to do a split? NOT that I need more…
@kls_in_MD I am on the other side of the country now, but I grew up in MD and it is delightful to hear/read the word “Baltomoron” again.
Anyone in the Eastern MA or Southern NH want to do a split - 2, 3, or 4 ways
