2022 Ty Caton Estate Ty’s Red, Moon Mountain District, Sonoma Valley
Tasting Notes
With savory aromas and a deep, luscious color, this beloved wine caresses the palate with layers of dark cherry, blackberry, and cassis. Its thick, velvety texture unfolds into subtle notes of toasty oak, finishing with a hint of chocolate. Perfectly paired with your favorite grilled meats.
Caton Vineyard
Located in the foothills of Sonoma Valley, the Caton Vineyard is defined by its sustainable farming and belief that healthier vineyards produce unique and distinctive wines. The vineyards have multiple sun exposures, soil types, and vary in altitude over 300 feet between each other. Our meticulous farming practices showcase the love for our land and our passion for the wines that come from it.
2022 Vintage Notes
Late spring gave way to very moderate temperatures with ideal growing conditions for optimal flavor development. At the end of September, we had the mother of all heat waves followed by a dramatic cooling with small amounts of rain a week later. This cool down actually helped refresh the vines. The net effect of the drought, heat and rain was a very light crop, perhaps our lightest ever on our estate vineyards. The good news of this light crop is that it produced a greater concentration of flavor. By adapting our vineyard and winemaking approach to meet the challenges of the season, we produced another vintage of outstanding wines.

A crisp yet sunny afternoon in wine country made for the perfect Sunday evening to pop open a bottle of the 2022 vintage Ty’s Red. I’ve had Ty Caton wines before and have been consistently delighted by the quality at the price point, so I was very excited to get my hands on this bottle.
Upon pop and pour, the wine was just beautiful. Its color was a deep, rich plum, mirrored in the nose. Right away, it was jammy on the nose, with fragrant notes of stone fruit, red cherry, and blackberry coming through. The first sip was incredibly smooth. I haven’t had a red wine in a while that feels so velvety on the tongue within the first few seconds. The wine has an immaculately delicate balance of being rich in flavor and feel without being too dense. In my opinion, the style felt closer to that of a full-bodied pinot noir rather than a typical full-bodied cab.
I was drinking this wine with the holidays in mind and definitely picked up some festive essences as it continued to open. Some very light nutty, chocolatey notes appeared right on the finish. It became smoother over time, and the body grew more developed and luscious. I drank this alongside chicken fajitas for dinner, but I’d love to taste it next to a nice steak or stew; it seems like a perfect pairing for a winter meal.
My final assessment: this elegant wine is a must-buy for the holidays. It will sit beautifully as a table wine for casual December gatherings while still holding its own for Christmas dinner. Cheers all!

2022 Ty Caton Vineyards Estate Ty’s Red - $40 = 14.81%
A UPS delivery showed up with a single bottle inside, which usually means I have tasting duties ahead. Inside was a familiar label I’ve bought many times over the years, one of my dependable go-to reds. This 2022 Ty Caton red blend continues to earn its spot.
Pop n pour:
Deep garnet in the glass with good clarity. The first sniff is a bit muted, showing dark red and black fruits. Bright cherry comes through along with a dusty, leathery note.
First sip:
Instantly familiar, and still a favorite. Flavors are well blended and full. Dark fruit leads with ripe currant and jammy blackberry, followed by a touch of baking spice and vanillin from the oak on a medium-long finish.
Texture and structure:
Velvety mouthfeel. Balanced, low acidity. Medium+ body. Tannins are present but smoothly integrated. Alcohol is balanced.
I could drink this all night, but tomorrow is Monday of a short work week, so discipline wins. This wine is excellent on its own yet holds up nicely with food. At the typical case price of around $18 to $20 per bottle, it remains a steal. It drinks like something older and more expensive and consistently pleases a crowd.
Thanks again to the Casemates crew for the chance to share my thoughts. Happy Thanksgiving week, everyone!
