Vibrant and fresh, Vinho Verde simply translates as “young wine”. Lightly effervescent on the palate, with aromas and flavors of melon, cut apples, and lemon zest… the perfect wine to share with friends on a warm, sunny day.
Food Pairing
Seafood, salads, sushi, light meals. It can be served as a cocktail wine.
Vidigal Wines is a family-run, medium size wine company that produces Still and Dessert Wines. Located in the center of Portugal, nearby the city of Leiria. Vidigal was established in the beginning of the 20th Century in a winery founded by a Church Canon.
The majority of wines Vidigal produces, in particular the ones from the region of Lisbon, originate from vineyards close to the Atlantic Ocean, and as such the sea breeze has an influence on the wines we produce, presenting us with a range of wines that are fresh and always very fruity.

The color of this wine is a very pale green, just like the hay my grandparents used to get delivered for their goats in the Texas Hill Country. It’s giving me all the nostalgic feelings.
It has a bright and effervescent mouth feel with notes of lemon, and maybe honeydew? It smells of fresh green apple, honey, and jasmine.
This is a delightfully bright wine that you could knock back in one evening, solo (or so I’ve heard). My non-wine-drinking husband gave it a sip before heading out for his cigar night and said it was “pretty good”. I think he probably would have shared the bottle if I’d opened it on any other evening. This wine should please your summer BBQ crowd or even compliment a cold salad or creamy pasta for dinner.
I have LOVED Vinho Verde from some producers, and liked it from others. But I have found that it does not benefit from an extra year or two sitting around.
This is 2019 vintage. I don’t trust it to be very good at this point. I would expect 2021 to be available soon.

2019 Vidigal Vinho Verde White Wine - $14 = 13.46%
It is always exciting to find out a rat bottle is on the way, knowing you’re probably going to try something new or a new winery. This was both. I’ve never heard of Vidigal Wines, Vinho Verde or any of the three varietals (Arinto, Loureiro, and Tranadura) in the wine. I can’t independently recall ever trying a wine from Portugal for that matter so I looked forward to trying it.
I let the wine rest for a few days then poured a glass straight from the fridge. The color is a very pale straw or pale yellow color. The nose was citrusy with some green apple and a little grass. The first taste was of green apple, maybe a little grapefruit and lots of lime. I love lime and squeeze an entire lime into a gin and tonic or a squeeze onto every bite of a burrito so I really enjoyed that. There is a little effervescence, as the bottle states, but I didn’t detect much at all. I definitely wouldn’t consider this fizzy. It is light and crisp, slightly acidic with a tart lime finish. As it warmed a bit it seemed to have a little bit of a metallic aftertaste. Even with that said it’s pretty easy drinking with a low 9.5 ABV, so a good summer porch pounder. Saved half of the bottle to see how it holds up tomorrow.
Day 2: Not quite as crisp as yesterday. Still a little effervescence and a tart lime finish, but not as strong. The wine, in general, seems to have mellowed a bit. I did not detect the metallic aftertaste on day 2. Maybe I was tasting some minerality that I perceived as metallic on day 1? I think if you like Sauvignon Blanc this could be a fun wine to try if you’ve never tried a Vinho Verde. Thanks Alice and all at WCC for the chance to try something new!

85 Points. Silver Medal. Highly Recommended.
Alcohol: 9.5% RS: 1.26%
Silvery emerald straw color. Aromas of flint, dried granny smith apples, and soufflé with a lean, vibrant, petillant, dryish light body and a smooth, breezy lemon-honey vinaigrette finish with no oak flavor. A lean and refreshing Vinho Verde for casual daytime indulging.
From Loren Sonkin at IntoWine:
This is a blend of 40% Arinto, 30% Loureiro, and 30% Trajadura grapes that checks in a 9.5% ABV. It is a light and delightful white wine that makes an easy start to the evening. Light silvery gold in color. The nose has minerals, limes, and slight honeydew. A slight effervescence. Very slight oily texture. Nice acidity. This probably should be drunk now to enjoy the spritz and vitality. It drinks well on its own and will work with lighter salads and seafood. Grade B. Score 86.

Have not had one in a while but always light bright effervescent and really good with spicy Mexican food!
I’m in.
Sounds like a nice change up front the Rose I’ve been drinking all summer. In for a case

@bdb Good for sangria perhaps if it starts going south… or even if sound in fact
@bdb @kaolis I was thinking this one could be super tasty with some cold slices of kiwi and maybe a shot of elderflower.

@TimW and now 1/2 cases are gone too! Hope my order goes through.
@TimW @Aracos wow, got it last minute I guess
Funny, I felt a movement in “the force”.
@TimW I ordered just before you and it showed half cases sold out. Looks like we got the last of it.
