A version of stracotto, sounds fancy right? And a def in its third stage of life cheapie Barolo that was a good match, even a thumbs up from the bride… apologies for the bandwidth but hey it is quiet out here figured what the heck
@InFrom@klezman Didn’t know the history until I made it for a friend who filled me in. So originally I just took it as being Italian in origin. No Barolo in the dish, while ideal I was afraid of the wine being too fragile to open up early. Used a little burg and also a bit of homemade beef stock

The more fun part was how they have a bunch of steaks in a little trolley. They wheel it over to show you the cuts to explain what they are. Maybe they’re not standard names in London for those cuts but they were all normal cuts you’d see in North America. Could have had a tomahawk too but it was a business dinner and that seemed too messy.
So the other day I was watching a show on Apple TV about restaurants going for 1 or more Michelin stars and one of them was right down the hill from me!?! (The pasta bar). Told the boss we are going and made a reservation, so screw the simple man crap

Honestly, I think I got this bottle in one of the fairly recent in mystery cases. I’ve not specifically sought them out personally (although I may have gotten some through Berserkers. I’ll have to look into that.). I can say, without a doubt, that this bottle was delicious and was thoroughly enjoyed by the crew at my local Italian spot. Looks like it retails at around $80, which I would not often choose to pay for something I’ve not personally tasted.
After we finished this bottle, I opened a Twisted Oak Torcido (not sure of the vintage as I failed to take a photo though I suspect 2018 as there is another on the rack is a nearby slot). Also quite delicious and enjoyed by all!

@InFrom@karenhynes@rjquillin The only Pinotage I have encountered was from South Africa, and I was quite put off by the burnt rubber (“Curad Band Aid”) flavor that was prominent (although I’ve heard that they have found ways to limit those). Didn’t realize that it was grown in California.
Smoked a turkey breast in the snow today. It and the wine was great; snow, not so much. Glad my commute has been reduced to walking down the stairs!

@dawnlac I’ve been a buyer for 10 years, in the club for 7. Aromas have great depth, palate is a little light, but I find they put on weight with air/ on second day. To me they always deliver.
Just some jerk chicken and Habanero bbq drumsticks with creamy Maresh Polenta. The wine could not stand up to the heat so drank while cooking and after dinner.
@ScottW58 Small world, we almost ordered a Kelley Fox at dinner tonight, but the waiter suggested a Sandlands Table Wine instead, and we went with it. With house-made Mortadella, polenta bread, in-house dry-aged sirloin, and grilled pea shoots. Oh and a very thin, grilled lasagna, that barely survived long enough for a photo.
It was two very thin sheets of green pasta with a lasagna-filling schmear inside. So good. We have a little left over, it may turn out to be breakfast.
@ScottW58 We ordinarily wouldn’t order a charcuterie appetizer before a steak dinner, unless maybe we were dining in Italy, when all such restraints are abandoned. But what the hell, I’m on a statin, and it’s my bday, there was no excuse not to go for it.

I was surprised by the extent of the waiter’s familiarity with and enthusiasm for Kelley Fox, so when he suggested a few other options that he thought would work better with our planned order, I was happy to pick the Sandlands.

Made a chicken dish, chicken thighs, coconut milk, shallots, green beans (mostly for my wife) and sliced garlic. The recipe called for skinless thighs but who am I to waste perfectly good chicken skin fried them up and ate like chips. Yum if I don’t say so myself

The return of the birthday steak. I made a green bean coconut curry with shallots, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes. I didn’t bother to heat up the steak, so it stayed nice and rare. Over linguine, we were fresh out of rice noodles.

Had a Flannery lamb saddle in the freezer and some bacon I needed to eat before it expired so throwing caution into the wind for the fear that @davirom might scold me for eating too much fat followed by statin. So I wrapped the lamb in bacon and roasted it yum! There was green stuff and leftover Polenta. Went a little over but with the fat cap on the lamb and the bacon no worries. Sorry no pictures on the plate because daughter and wife destroyed everything quickly ha.
Picked up a couple T-bones for Channukah dinner with the kids. 2001 Meeker Four Kings and now that they’re in bed, 2013 Nittnaus Beerenauslese Exquisit - something we picked up at the winery in Austria when the first one was in utero.
Finished up the pinot last night, I enjoyed it more day two, had with that overcooked piece of flatiron

Don’t get into this thread very often any more (after my loss of smell), but took advantage of an unseasonably warm (50 degree F) day to do some grilling. First cooked up a couple of ribeyes (which where planned for dinner). Then a batch of bone-in chicken thighs (no pic). When it came time to eat, we decided to have some of both, along with some green stuff (salad, asparagus). And pulled out a 2019 WineSmith Unicorn, which also seemed to be very nice.
Taco Sunday and '24 Kutch rosé whilst watching football… being a Chicago Bears fan I cannot explain how excruciating it was to be rooting for an Aaron Rodgers led team. I kept hoping for him to throw touchdown passes yet get pummeled to the ground never to return ha!
@pjmartin We had Cheer yesterday and finished it today. Decent Sonoma Cab. I’m sure the trash collectors, mailman, FedEx guy and neighbors will approve. Shoulda got 2 cases!

2013 Clayhouse Cabernet red cedar vineyard jeroboam. The office Xmas party never had it so good. Meanwhile, back at home my FIL suffered through a 2000 Elivette with a Flannery hanger. Who had the better night?
@kaolis The party was fun. I only had a brief opportunity to taste the Elivette on my way out the door. Fruit was present but starting to fade. I would say it’s slightly past peak with some interesting tertiary flavors.
I wish I had more time to explore this one and will curious to hear your thoughts. I have some 03s and 04s coming, so that should give me another shot at trying some with 20+ years of age on it. I loved the 05 fwiw.
Getting the roast beast ready for tomorrow, black garlic molasses, SPG and some coffee chili dusting. Also the 3 kids came over tonight and had some caviar, Otoro tuna belly with champagne. I am firmly in the Society of the Fortunate for Christmas
Been MIA this month. Just now catching up on the all of the beautiful pics for Dec. Traveling and then had surgery on my foot. A few broken bones and pins/plates. Finally back to enjoying the festivities, albeit no driving or walking for 6 weeks. This was my last Wed wine dinner before the surgery.

Crucible was delicious, younger than its 20 years. I don’t have a lot of experience with carefully cellared wine. The Angelus was enjoyed too, though a completely different experience. Still some fruit, smooth, and just a wee bit of tannins. Aromas and taste with all that tertiary stuff.
Made my favorite raised waffles this morning for the kids so tonight fried up some chicken thighs for chicken and waffles! And it’s Christmas so the baby Jesus came out to play

I have had the 04, 05, 06, 07 and 12 I think and have really enjoyed each and every one of them. 06 were the only mags I bought. A bunch of people over on WB have said they don’t think these older ones have enough fruit left?? Well I don’t know what the hell these people drink regularly but to my palate they all have plenty of fruit and are nicely balanced IMHO. Enjoy!

So had a great Thanksgiving with daughter and hubby, got to spend a few days together. However we were Christmas orphans so popped up to Charleston for a couple of days. A spot we like was open Christmas day, decent beers and a great pie. And trust me we weren’t the only orphans in town. Red and green right?

I attended a family wedding tonight. The wine I had was a generic Cab. Dinner was brisket with mashed potatoes, green beans, and carrots. I’d say the meat-to-veggie proportion was spot on haha. (Truthfully there were plenty of veggies, but they were hiding under the brisket.)
We can only stay away from sushi for so long. The Andre Tixier brut rosé champagne was a nice pairing (LB marathon flyer). There was also a Michel-Schlumberger brut in the vicinity. A very nice sparkler at $12 a bottle. That was a great score, WD!
@hscottk we’re getting ready for 1/1 with a Gokujo Sandan-Ju Osechi (おせち) as well as a kilo+ of sashimi and a couple bottles of sake.

Last night’s refreshments, all started well before midnight. Usually we pick up a Malbec from Cahors, to go with the cassoulet I always make for NYE. This year decided not to be such a purist, and went with a Malbec from SA this year, since I received a couple in a mystery case a few months back. I was afraid it was going to be a hot fruit bomb, but it was not, and showed some complexity. New World ftw!

Just some jerk chicken and Habanero bbq drumsticks with creamy Maresh Polenta. The wine could not stand up to the heat so drank while cooking and after dinner.

@ScottW58 Small world, we almost ordered a Kelley Fox at dinner tonight, but the waiter suggested a Sandlands Table Wine instead, and we went with it. With house-made Mortadella, polenta bread, in-house dry-aged sirloin, and grilled pea shoots. Oh and a very thin, grilled lasagna, that barely survived long enough for a photo.

I was surprised by the extent of the waiter’s familiarity with and enthusiasm for Kelley Fox, so when he suggested a few other options that he thought would work better with our planned order, I was happy to pick the Sandlands.

Made a chicken dish, chicken thighs, coconut milk, shallots, green beans (mostly for my wife) and sliced garlic. The recipe called for skinless thighs but who am I to waste perfectly good chicken skin

The return of the birthday steak. I made a green bean coconut curry with shallots, garlic, ginger, and tomatoes. I didn’t bother to heat up the steak, so it stayed nice and rare. Over linguine, we were fresh out of rice noodles.

Had a Flannery lamb saddle in the freezer and some bacon I needed to eat before it expired
so throwing caution into the wind for the fear that @davirom might scold me for eating too much fat followed by statin. So I wrapped the lamb in bacon and roasted it yum! There was green stuff and leftover Polenta. Went a little over but with the fat cap on the lamb and the bacon no worries. Sorry no pictures on the plate because daughter and wife destroyed everything quickly ha.

Don’t get into this thread very often any more (after my loss of smell), but took advantage of an unseasonably warm (50 degree F) day to do some grilling. First cooked up a couple of ribeyes (which where planned for dinner). Then a batch of bone-in chicken thighs (no pic). When it came time to eat, we decided to have some of both, along with some green stuff (salad, asparagus). And pulled out a 2019 WineSmith Unicorn, which also seemed to be very nice.

@kaolis The party was fun. I only had a brief opportunity to taste the Elivette on my way out the door. Fruit was present but starting to fade. I would say it’s slightly past peak with some interesting tertiary flavors.
I wish I had more time to explore this one and will curious to hear your thoughts. I have some 03s and 04s coming, so that should give me another shot at trying some with 20+ years of age on it. I loved the 05 fwiw.
Getting the roast beast ready for tomorrow, black garlic molasses, SPG and some coffee chili dusting. Also the 3 kids came over tonight and had some caviar, Otoro tuna belly with champagne. I am firmly in the Society of the Fortunate for Christmas

Crucible was delicious, younger than its 20 years. I don’t have a lot of experience with carefully cellared wine. The Angelus was enjoyed too, though a completely different experience. Still some fruit, smooth, and just a wee bit of tannins. Aromas and taste with all that tertiary stuff.
Just finishing up a really nice Manhattan, and picked a 1999 Chateau Musar to go with our wagyu rib steak, roasted potatoes, and asparagus.
Made my favorite raised waffles this morning for the kids so tonight fried up some chicken thighs for chicken and waffles! And it’s Christmas so the baby Jesus came out to play

I have had the 04, 05, 06, 07 and 12 I think and have really enjoyed each and every one of them. 06 were the only mags I bought. A bunch of people over on WB have said they don’t think these older ones have enough fruit left?? Well I don’t know what the hell these people drink regularly but to my palate they all have plenty of fruit and are nicely balanced IMHO. Enjoy!

So had a great Thanksgiving with daughter and hubby, got to spend a few days together. However we were Christmas orphans so popped up to Charleston for a couple of days. A spot we like was open Christmas day, decent beers and a great pie. And trust me we weren’t the only orphans in town. Red and green right?

I attended a family wedding tonight. The wine I had was a generic Cab. Dinner was brisket with mashed potatoes, green beans, and carrots. I’d say the meat-to-veggie proportion was spot on haha. (Truthfully there were plenty of veggies, but they were hiding under the brisket.)

Excellent meal with the aforementioned 07 Elivette mag. Had the tiniest bit of bitterness on pnp, but quickly became fantastic with a little air.

We can only stay away from sushi for so long. The Andre Tixier brut rosé champagne was a nice pairing (LB marathon flyer). There was also a Michel-Schlumberger brut in the vicinity. A very nice sparkler at $12 a bottle. That was a great score, WD!

Last night’s refreshments, all started well before midnight. Usually we pick up a Malbec from Cahors, to go with the cassoulet I always make for NYE. This year decided not to be such a purist, and went with a Malbec from SA this year, since I received a couple in a mystery case a few months back. I was afraid it was going to be a hot fruit bomb, but it was not, and showed some complexity. New World ftw!
No cassoulet pics, that stuff never photographs well.
