Dryuary?! My cellar is too big I’ll do dryuary when I’m dead anyways did a Pozole tonight thanks @jmdavidson for reminding me! Made it with some new dried chili’s someone recommended and it was rich and fantastic if I don’t say so myself ha. Paired perfectly with a Sherrer omv zin.
Didn’t do bubbly last night, so we’re starting the year off with a very random orange bubbly from Slovakia: NV Pivnica Cajkov Vulcanica #5
We have some Chinese roast pork and bok choi to use with dinner, but not sure what I’m making with it just yet.
2018 Turley Zinfandel Mead Ranch
I never quite know when to open these since Turley is too fruity for me when it’s too young. This one is starting off quite nicely with a face full of peppercorn and red fruit. I have a feeling the tannins are going to be like nails in about 2 hours.
Someone needs to remind me that old guys shouldn’t be buying young Bordeaux… and that’s a slice of Morgan Ranch strip, bloc de foie and other items of various color…
@ScottW58 Quite good. Very aromatic. Tossed in a decanter about 1/2 hour or so before getting at it. A youngster duh but not a tannic beast. It totally shut down after about two hours. Worth the price of admission.
@kaolis
I have some of those too I think? Moris farms have been hard to find since the 09 vintage for me at least, I found these at wine.com when the coupons were all the rage and I bought them out well they are back and I figured out how to get the 30% back from capital one shopping and got 4 more the other day. Iirc @jmdavidson is familiar with these beauties. The Avvoltore is the flagship bottling I think, either way it’s fantastic!
Straight up tart/sour cherry. Almost too much so, and not really anything else going on. Not what I’d expect from a cab. It’s more characteristic of a Pinot Noir. Not sure if this is a one off scenario, so I’ll pay close attention the next time I open one of these.
@Mark_L
Yeah I recall that as well, but IMHO this is drinking beautifully. It’s doing much better than the 2010 Mohrhardt Ridge Cab I just had, but perhaps that was a flawed bottle. I’ll have to open another in the near future to see how it compares.
@kawichris650@Mark_L I just opened an '09 Meeks, and it’s amazing how much fruit is still there. I don’t have any kind of refrigerated storage, and this wine is holding up well. At 14.9% AbV, it was a little hot at first sip, but that subsided quickly.
Since a kind person already posted a pic of the label, I’ll see what I can do about getting one of the wine. Next time I get up.
@klezman@rjquillin@ScottW58 I see him all the time…
But never hang out for whatever reason.
We stopped splitting wine orders because he’s just not ordering much non-bubbles.
@CorTot@klezman@rjquillin
Talk to him occasionally on the WB board, have not seen him for a couple of years since the last time he bought a bottle of Macdonald from me
@CorTot@InFrom@klezman@rjquillin
Lehmann “Jamesse Prestige” Grand Champagne mouth blown. Gorgeous aren’t they bought a couple from K& L awhile back but now I can’t find them anywhere for a reasonable price? Got a couple of the regular ones but they are kind of clunky in comparison.
Shared a. Couple glasses of rose Champagne this afternoon with @chefjess who knew you don’t have travel cross country to enjoy a great wine and conversation with someone
@ScottW58 So I’m not totally crazy…thought maybe it was the 15.9 abv on our vino this evening…
Love the Flannery sausage, it’s not Chicago sausage but beats anything I can get here in Carolina
@ScottW58 I’ve got a few of those on order from K&L. Glad they’re up to snuff!
And yeah, loved the Flannery sausage. But I haven’t seen the Sicilian one on the site lately.
Red Newt Cabernet Franc Rosé (Kelby James Russell label)
No idea what we’re making…waiting to see if the arriving in-laws are planning to have dinner with us. Much wine will be needed in the next several weeks they’re here.
@karenhynes I had a bottle of the WineSmith Norton in this past week. My usual “I don’t really care for Norton” (but Clark’s is better than any I’ve had) opinions persisted.
@hscottk@kaolis I wouldn’t call it sweet and its definitely not (very) dry - I think Kaolis’ description of fruity (or fruitier - not tried the 2017) hits the nail on the head or maybe I also have the palette of a yak as well!
@ctmariner@hscottk@kaolis
Well speaking of Yak palates here I am, I think the difference between 17 and 18 is the 18 is much more merlot forward, the 17 is a much more earthy cab franc thing. Don’t know if it is a blend or a vintage decision?
@ctmariner@hscottk@kaolis@ScottW58 Didn’t the description say that the blend is always the same? That would suggest it’s a vintage thing and the Merlot is fruitier than in '17?
I’m not getting mine until March and probably won’t touch one for a while, though. So I’ll just watch what you all think
@hscottk@ScottW58 so, in one night, 2 2011s get opened. How are they drinking now? We all know 2011 wasn’t one of the best vintage years. BTW, I, too, picked up some 11s and 12s from tso. Trying to decide if I get more 11 or 12, assuming they’re still available when I get around to buying.
@hscottk@jmdavidson1
They are drinking very well now and IMHO will for quite some time. I being one of the bigger haters of the 11 vintage thinks this might be the best I have had from 2011 and bought 3 more last night.
@jmdavidson1@ScottW58 Couldn’t agree more with @ScottW58. Bottle last night was similar to my note in CT. Bought three of the 11s then three more after trying the first. Then bought 6 of the 2012, which should arrive next week. Once I have a chance to try one I’ll have a better idea of where to add. Has anyone tried the '12 yet?
Flannery California Reserve Tenderloin Roast, reverse sear with Pedroncelli Port reduction, sautéed chanterelles, truffled potato and some colored stuff, with what seemed an appropriate bottle
2019 Erica Orr Merlot - 2022 BD purchase - thought I would try before this year’s BD comes around! Good - a bit tannic and will probably get better with a bit more age
You called? Considering how much hotter the 12 vintage was this is bright and balanced acidity with juicy red and black fruit, loved it ymmv. Anyone looking to unload bottles I’m your guy!
@ScottW58 In a good spot. Pretty complete front to back, a tad earthy, spice and red fruit. Haven’t checked in on a '13. Crazy that it’s the recent release.
@ScottW58 It was very easy to cut them into the proper size, but I marinated them and that was a mistake. Very easy to grill. Next time I will stick with salt and pepper. We have also used hangers in stroganoff, and that was spectacular.
@davirom The Morgan Ranch kabob cubes are pretty darn tasty and a bit cheaper at $15/lb (not that anyone around here seems to care) but to get kabobs only, you have to buy ten pounds. Price increase coming soon for MR.
2015 Y Rousseau Cabernet Sauvignon Le Roi Soleil
Yannick said to open one soon, so I am! Quite dark is my initial impression. Having it with a 75-day home dry aged rib steak. And probably some green stuff. Yum.
Did some some chicken thighs marinated in harissa garlic lemon juice black garlic molasses and olive oil, broiled and yogurt herb sauce. Oh and green stuff, shit it was good
@ScottW58
Fried up some minute steaks, chopped them up real good and added onions sauteed in butter, then continued cooking until the meat got crispy. Folded in a bunch of grated Colby cheese and served on buttered/toasted Hawaiian buns.
@kaolis First time trying a Pride. Good fruit (blackberry, some cherry, etc.), soft tannins, paired well with the meat and the bacon. Solid wine for about $50. In the drinking window, but could still go for quite a few years with good cellaring.
@ScottW58
2015 base. Austere and tight. No discernible juicy fruit and no real development over two days. Very effervescent. Tried it cold and let it warm. Better a little warmer and was pleasant with spicy food, but didn’t enjoy on its own. The nose was better than the palate, but even then it wasn’t exciting. I have one glass left so maybe it will shine tomorrow? Perhaps this needs to rest for a few years and a different base vintage would be more open? Not a great showing.
BD14 ‘newbie’ tastings. There were four of us, 8 wines, and food (2 of us received wine and one food with an extra ‘regular’ taster).
After the tasting, Goodfellow 2021 Whistling Ridge Blanc. Lovely. Will be singing in 4-5 years. Marcus makes some great wines.
@karenhynes@rjquillin
Yes it does if you ever get out there Karen go to the winery for a tasting it’s fantastic! And I’m not a big fan of tastings at a winery
@jmdavidson1@rjquillin@ScottW58
I think their pricing is on their site. I don’t think it’s discounted on the allocation list. I’ve never sourced it “in the wild”. I can PM you the allocation prices when they go live if you want to compare??
2020 Sandlands Zinfandel
2013 Hunt Country Vineyards Vignoles Late Harvest @WineDavid49, time to get these guys back - minus the Sherry and other stuff we’d never drink!
Dryuary?! My cellar is too big I’ll do dryuary when I’m dead
anyways did a Pozole tonight thanks @jmdavidson for reminding me! Made it with some new dried chili’s someone recommended and it was rich and fantastic if I don’t say so myself ha. Paired perfectly with a Sherrer omv zin.
@ScottW58 Nice to see I can inspire someone to do something. Thanks Vive pozole.
Didn’t do bubbly last night, so we’re starting the year off with a very random orange bubbly from Slovakia: NV Pivnica Cajkov Vulcanica #5
We have some Chinese roast pork and bok choi to use with dinner, but not sure what I’m making with it just yet.
The wine is 50% each Pinot Gris and Pesecka Leanka, an indigenous Romanian grape. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fetească_regală)
After midnight…
@chipgreen
@kawichris650 The old school label!
A delicious recent arrival with leftovers.

@kaolis
Lol we are in the same boat I bought 3 of those myself ugh! Although I didn’t have the balls to open it yet. How was it?
@ScottW58 Quite good. Very aromatic. Tossed in a decanter about 1/2 hour or so before getting at it. A youngster duh but not a tannic beast. It totally shut down after about two hours. Worth the price of admission.
A blast from the past. Found 2 bottles of:

2007 Rosenblum Heritage Clones PS.
Very Tasty.
NV Woot Cellars Emergencier Holiday Provisions
Thematically appropriate for how we’re feeling at this moment.
Really nice wine, exceeded any expectations. Floral nose, citrus, honeydew melon flavors. Unoaked. Nice with a seafood chowder. Restoring faith in mystery cases.
The “automated” picture at the top of this thread could hardly be more inappropriate.

@Mark_L That’s a scream!
A little Tuscan beauty with steak and green stuff.

@ScottW58 Made me look that up…I’ve had a bottle or three of the Morellino di Scansano bottlings
@kaolis
well they are back and I figured out how to get the 30% back from capital one shopping and got 4 more the other day. Iirc @jmdavidson is familiar with these beauties. The Avvoltore is the flagship bottling I think, either way it’s fantastic!
I have some of those too I think? Moris farms have been hard to find since the 09 vintage for me at least, I found these at wine.com when the coupons were all the rage and I bought them out
@jmdavidson @kaolis @ScottW58
I’d be curious about how that 30% works…
@jmdavidson @kaolis @rjquillin @ScottW58 yeah, that sounds too good to be true.
Morris doesn’t sound all that Italian…
@ScottW58 Thanks for the info. I’ve been informed that I’m in a S(pouse)IWBM until further notice.
Shitty day calls for a wine that has been delightful in the past: 2009 Woot Cellars Tøøthstejnn The Red, The Grimy Wyvern Wine-Hall
Straight up tart/sour cherry. Almost too much so, and not really anything else going on. Not what I’d expect from a cab. It’s more characteristic of a Pinot Noir. Not sure if this is a one off scenario, so I’ll pay close attention the next time I open one of these.

@CorTot Which one is that?
@klezman it’s the 2013 red blend.
Happy Wellington Friday doesn’t have the same ring to it, but who cares.

@kawichris650 I recall Peter saying that the Meek’s could be better to drink earlier.
@Mark_L
Yeah I recall that as well, but IMHO this is drinking beautifully. It’s doing much better than the 2010 Mohrhardt Ridge Cab I just had, but perhaps that was a flawed bottle. I’ll have to open another in the near future to see how it compares.
@kawichris650 @Mark_L I just opened an '09 Meeks, and it’s amazing how much fruit is still there. I don’t have any kind of refrigerated storage, and this wine is holding up well. At 14.9% AbV, it was a little hot at first sip, but that subsided quickly.

@kawichris650 @Mark_L
Got out the instant pot for the first time in a while to do some lamb shanks.
2010 Cantine Giacomo Ascheri Barolo
2007 WineSmith Barbera Penny Farthing
pristine cork, pretty good contents too…
With a big ass bowl of green stuff with chicken in it, I feel like I’m detoxing
and it’s cold here tonight.

@ScottW58 You know those organic spring mix boxes from Costco; 1/3 was lunch today, no chicken, but bacon, or it would have been nearly intolerable.
Lot of bubbly up your way lately. You taking after Kyle?
@rjquillin
Lol actually not enough bubbly up my way lately and Kyle’s legendary amount of bubbles drinking is beyond me
@rjquillin @ScottW58 you heard from Kyle at all?
@klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 I see him all the time…
But never hang out for whatever reason.
We stopped splitting wine orders because he’s just not ordering much non-bubbles.
@CorTot @rjquillin @ScottW58 host a gathering and convince him to come! We can bring bubbles
@CorTot @klezman @rjquillin
Talk to him occasionally on the WB board, have not seen him for a couple of years since the last time he bought a bottle of Macdonald from me
@CorTot @klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 Speaking of bubbles, what kind of stems are those?
@CorTot @InFrom @klezman @rjquillin
bought a couple from K& L awhile back but now I can’t find them anywhere for a reasonable price? Got a couple of the regular ones but they are kind of clunky in comparison.
Lehmann “Jamesse Prestige” Grand Champagne mouth blown. Gorgeous aren’t they
Nothing fancy, no green stuff
Also some bubbles: 2011 Iron Horse Vineyards Spirit of '76
Making something Sichuan, most likely, to go with it.
Crisped up some frozen confi chicken thighs Anson Mills white polenta Riesling gravy with tarragon (green stuff)
and life is good!

2016 Babylon’s Peak Warp+Weft Shweshwe
Damn it’s raining here! Screw the food I’m just drinking

2014 Iron Horse Vineyards Unoaked Chardonnay

2012 Iron Horse Estate Chardonnay
2011 Clayhouse “Show Pony” Petite Sirah

Fantastic conversation over some lovely bubbles this evening with @scottw58
2018
Roast chicken, Marsh Hen Mill Carolina Gold rice, green stuff
@kaolis
Mmm Carolina gold, timely wine too
Next up… with bacon and eggs.
Pork chops and 2004 Ravenswood Barricia Zinfandel
Happy Wednesday!

@kawichris650 I actually thought about opening one of those last night
With last night’s roast chicken turned into tonight’s tacos…
@kaolis If you’ve never tried aji de gallina you should add it to your list!
@klezman No, not familiar, looks tasty for sure
With last night’s chicken noodle soup with turned into tonight’s umm chicken noodle soup
and some sausages. Boy is this wine delicious IMHO.

@ScottW58 I see chicken and I see sausage or is that a carrot … I think you forgot the noodle, oh wait now yes, there is one for sure
@kaolis
Ha sausage has not been cooked yet that was last night’s pic, used Spezzati pasta short thin pasta kind of hard to see.
@ScottW58 So I’m not totally crazy…thought maybe it was the 15.9 abv on our vino this evening…
Love the Flannery sausage, it’s not Chicago sausage but beats anything I can get here in Carolina

Friday bottles
@karenhynes I had a bottle of the WineSmith Norton in this past week. My usual “I don’t really care for Norton” (but Clark’s is better than any I’ve had) opinions persisted.
2018 Cave Dog (Merlot and Cab Franc blend from Napa) -WTSO purchase based on recommendations from here
@ctmariner Was it sweet? The bottle I had seemed to have more rs than I prefer. Will need to pop another bottle.
@ctmariner @hscottk I bought the '17 and '18, don’t believe any significant rs in either but the '18 is definitely the fruitier of the two.
@kaolis I see CT agrees with you…about the rs…perhaps I really do have the palate of a yak, but I’ve been called worse…ha!
@hscottk @kaolis I wouldn’t call it sweet and its definitely not (very) dry - I think Kaolis’ description of fruity (or fruitier - not tried the 2017) hits the nail on the head or maybe I also have the palette of a yak as well!

I need to keep my hands off these or they will be gone in a flash. Green stuff need not apply!
Damn you beat me to it! Must be a Scott thing
I confide so many of these turkey thighs I’m searching for the perfect sauce/gravy. Garlic puree nice.
@ScottW58 Must be!

@ScottW58 Happy birthday!

Hope you both had wonderful birthdays!
2019 Goodfellow Family Cellars Pinot Noir Willamette Valley
Sipping this wine while the ribs are smoking, I am absolutely loving this wine!

2015 Dönnhoff Riesling Nahe
Thai Red Curry
2019 Erica Orr Merlot - 2022 BD purchase - thought I would try before this year’s BD comes around! Good - a bit tannic and will probably get better with a bit more age
@ctmariner same thought, but we had the 2021 Chenin Blanc, which we bought as a future last year. We’ll be looking for more, come BD!
@ctmariner @davirom I just wish she held on to them longer before release
@ctmariner @davirom @klezman Thanks for the report. Was toying with popping a merlot. I’ll wait a few years on these.
Happy Wednesday!

@kawichris650 How is that doing?
@catcoland
It is drinking beautifully.
2010 Ridge Buchignani Ranch Zinfandel
Damn this is good. 20% Carignan, too.
It’s incredible how well these are drinking after all this time. Absolutely no sign of them going downhill.

2011 Notre Vin Cabernet Sauvignon Cuvée L’Etrier
@msten Nice! We need someone to crack a '12 now
You called?
Considering how much hotter the 12 vintage was this is bright and balanced acidity with juicy red and black fruit, loved it ymmv. Anyone looking to unload bottles I’m your guy!

@ScottW58 Well played, ScottW… well played.
@CorTot Always enjoyed the campesino wines.
Exciting Friday here…couple of quarters in the Smokin-it…
@kaolis
Shit the skin on those look great!
@karenhynes Big wine night. What’s the occasion?
@jmdavidson1
Friday!
@karenhynes Works for me. Have a great w/e.
Campo Grande Iberico Secreto…forgot the green stuff
@kaolis
I’d buy that one for the label alone, when it likely was more affordable, long ago.
Occasion, or just because?
@rjquillin just because
@kaolis
Yum! Have to crack one of those soon although I only have the 13. How was it?
@ScottW58 In a good spot. Pretty complete front to back, a tad earthy, spice and red fruit. Haven’t checked in on a '13. Crazy that it’s the recent release.
2007 Michel Arcelain Pommard Clos Beaudier
Flannery hanger beef kabobs
@davirom
Never tried a hanger that way, must be great?
@ScottW58 It was very easy to cut them into the proper size, but I marinated them and that was a mistake. Very easy to grill. Next time I will stick with salt and pepper. We have also used hangers in stroganoff, and that was spectacular.
@davirom The Morgan Ranch kabob cubes are pretty darn tasty and a bit cheaper at $15/lb (not that anyone around here seems to care) but to get kabobs only, you have to buy ten pounds. Price increase coming soon for MR.
@kaolis Thanks for the heads up. Maybe MR will offer them on BD.
2017 2Hawk Malbec, Darow Series, Rogue Valley
2015 Y Rousseau Cabernet Sauvignon Le Roi Soleil
Yannick said to open one soon, so I am! Quite dark is my initial impression. Having it with a 75-day home dry aged rib steak. And probably some green stuff. Yum.
Did some some chicken thighs marinated in harissa garlic lemon juice black garlic molasses and olive oil, broiled and yogurt herb sauce. Oh and green stuff, shit it was good

@ScottW58 I’m impressed at how much Champagne you keep drinking!
That marinade sounds delicious.
@klezman @ScottW58 Boy In The Bubble… ha!
2018 Scott Harvey Barbera. Very good.
@jmdavidson1
They also make the Percarlo? Where did you get that?
With hot buttered cheesesteak sandwiches and sliced potatoes fried in bacon grease with a healthy dusting of paprika. So good… and good for you!
@chipgreen
Good God! Hot buttered cheese steak?! Tell me more
@ScottW58
Fried up some minute steaks, chopped them up real good and added onions sauteed in butter, then continued cooking until the meat got crispy. Folded in a bunch of grated Colby cheese and served on buttered/toasted Hawaiian buns.
2016 Trimbach 390th Cuvée Riesling
And making sushi. Yum
@klezman
Right! after almost 400 years they know how to make some wine
@ScottW58 we had a nice visit there too!
2018 Stereophonic The Dream of Spring (Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache and PS blend) with scallop BLT salad
@jmdavidson1 How is it? A soft spot for Pride here
@kaolis First time trying a Pride. Good fruit (blackberry, some cherry, etc.), soft tannins, paired well with the meat and the bacon. Solid wine for about $50. In the drinking window, but could still go for quite a few years with good cellaring.
A de Negoce offer. Tasty, needs some cellar time.
@chefjess
What year? How was it cause bubble boy GOTS to know
@ScottW58
2015 base. Austere and tight. No discernible juicy fruit and no real development over two days. Very effervescent. Tried it cold and let it warm. 2010 Virage Vineyards from Coravin with Flannery hanger steak. I forgot how good these both were.
@chefjess Wish I was in on some of the newbie tastings. I don’t contribute enough there to get selected.
Berserker Day wine from 2 years ago: 2018 Sabelli-Frisch Mission La Malinche
A random and fairly inexpensive buy that is just georgous with roasted chicken.

2011 Louis Latour Mâcon-Lugny Les Genièvres
2008 Marquis de Bellefont
It’s Wednesday here in WNY,
2012 Wellington Zinfandel Estate Vineyard
Was going to drink another BD wine but instead decided WW is where it’s at: 2010 Wellington Cabernet Sauvignon Handal-Denier
2010 Turley Hayne Vineyard PS.
@FritzCat how is it? I think I’ve got one hanging out for some day…
@klezman Outrageous flavor, long finish, lots of acid. No signs of age.
@klezman very good day 2, no hurry.
@karenhynes
You do seem to like those.
@rjquillin Indeed…and the spring allocation opens next week.
@karenhynes @rjquillin
if you ever get out there Karen go to the winery for a tasting it’s fantastic! And I’m not a big fan of tastings at a winery
Yes it does
@rjquillin @ScottW58
Oh, I’ve been there!
@karenhynes @rjquillin

@karenhynes @rjquillin @ScottW58 That seems to be the most common way to get hooked into a wine club. Cheers!
@jmdavidson1 @karenhynes @ScottW58
How do the club/allocation prices compare to those when found in the wild?
Yes, I need more wine…
@jmdavidson1 @rjquillin @ScottW58
I think their pricing is on their site. I don’t think it’s discounted on the allocation list. I’ve never sourced it “in the wild”. I can PM you the allocation prices when they go live if you want to compare??
More than worth the $15+fees tariff for this experiment!

2018 Scott Harvey mountain zin
2020 Sandlands Zinfandel
2013 Hunt Country Vineyards Vignoles Late Harvest
@WineDavid49, time to get these guys back - minus the Sherry and other stuff we’d never drink!
From last year’s BD, 2019 Red Newt Cellars Riesling Circle Label. Off-dry and very enjoyable.
@InFrom I’ve never had a bad bottle from them
2016 Refugio Ranch Petite Sirah with Kung Pao Cauliflower
@ctmariner We will be having cauliflower cheese soup with a 2017 Iron Horse Heart of the Vineyard chardonnay.
Since I just stocked up: 2011 Virage Vineyards
With a 100-day Flannery rib steak and a 60-day Creekstone rib steak. And courgettes.
A quiet night with burgers and a damn nice wine

2012 Virage Vineyards Bourriquot
and some Flannery Berserker blend burgers
