Latest CT note on this is interesting. Since when is 13.8% ‘low abv’? I do agree it’s a bit cloudy but drinking very nicely. And those Flannery hangers are simply divine. Had to make room for the new order!
@klezman@ScottW58 a mix of regular and dry aged hangers are en route. These are “classic” hangers from a previous order. Really looking forward to trying the aged!
@chipgreen@InFrom@msten
Guess I need to go find some of my '05 and '07 bottles as well; for science of course.
I look back at these, the Ardente, Roessler and other close outs and pine for those days again.
I grilled some steak and finished off the Wellington Mohrhardt Ridge cab from last night. Then decided to open up this unusual bottle that I bought ages ago. It’s a red dessert wine with braille on the label. Oh and it’s 17% abv.
@kaolis@klezman Reminds me of many years ago (I might have been in my teens) when some friends gave my parents some ducks they had just shot. When looking for recipes, one said “the best way to cook duck is to have it fly through the oven”.
@kaolis@Mark_L yeah, about the same as you’d bake/roast chicken thighs. Skin comes out nice and crispy, of course. Not as rich as confit. I did 375 for about 45 minutes.
@hscottk
Light, bright, fruity even after decanting for several hours. Better as the evening progressed. This is a lovely summer sipper just to enjoy without contemplation as there’s not much complexity at this young age. The Coury Clone, tasted a few months back, was more robust and further developed.
@rjquillin Bubbly is our go-to, but I’ve generally found PN to be a reasonable pairing for sushi. It’s light enough to not overwhelm the fish but can also hold its own with some stronger flavors. Not perfect, but good enough.
Made a batch of Sangria for Dane’s 1st Birthday Party.
A bottle of Inzinerator.
A bottle of Quixote Panza Petite Sirah.
A bottle of Fetzer Cabernet.
I think all from Casemates.
Equal amounts of OJ and Grand Marnier.
A liter of Soda Water, and plenty of fruit.
Excellent!
@FritzCat@klezman I had the same thought. Sangria is for disposing of bottles you don’t enjoy on their own. Or donating them to something like a daughters wedding…
@CorTot@FritzCat@klezman@ScottW58
I managed to get rid of 28 bottles to a nephews’ wedding. Great way to clear out some those unwanted bottles from the first WD mystery case offer.
@FritzCat@klezman@rjquillin@ScottW58 Good on you. I should donate more often clear out the stuff I probably wont ever want to drink. Boatique Winery PS I’m looking at you!!!
@CorTot@FritzCat@klezman@rjquillin
Well in my defense I did not donate any bottles to my daughter’s wedding that weren’t solid daily drinkers, just drinkers that I know I will never get around to drinking with so much stuff in my cellar. And she is my daughter you know
@FritzCat@klezman@rjquillin@ScottW58 true, I never had an issue with them not making me whole. But I dropped all buying from them a couple of years back as I got more and more dissatisfied with them.
@FritzCat@klezman@rjquillin@ScottW58 and I looked it up and they filed for bankruptcy very recently. I’m shocked they lasted this long. Terrible business model.
@FritzCat Uhhhh…kind of random choices, just what I thought would taste good. I did taste each wine before adding. There are so many wines that I haven’t gotten around to drinking…
@CorTot@FritzCat@klezman@rjquillin
Hopefully you guys did not have much pending? In reading about the PC debacle people got 9 or 10 cents to the dollar back but you have to file a claim with the bankruptcy court when they contact you. People are getting the checks this year for what happened in 2016 so not a quick return
@FritzCat@klezman@rjquillin@ScottW58 thankfully I bought enough to get to a case and then shipped and stopped buying. So I’m good.
Nothing lost except for some rack slots to their crappy wine.
@CorTot@FritzCat@klezman@ScottW58
I mostly did ok. Left behind a Harvest Moon Randy Zin, 2010 IH RRV cuvee and some mag of Hirsch PN I wouldn’t minded trying. Five others I have know idea of what/how they are. Likely would have made good donation bottles. Two cases delivered, so a decent ratio.
@ScottW58 You know, it didn’t blow me away. Tasty enough, but a bit too fatty/greasy. Not disappointed in the purchase, but not looking to reload either. The TO was a good pairing. And the vineyard is Red Hill, not Graciano. Had my bottles confused!
@hscottk younger than my preference, but I knew that going in. It needs air to show like a more balanced wine and not something that mostly comes off as fruity. But I liked it after about an hour open. Second half tonight and we’ll see…
We started with a bottle each of Marta Brut Cava and Marta Brut Rose, along with charcuterie featuring Spanish Chorizo, Speck, assorted cheeses & crackers including a 7-layer cheese dip and mango/apricot jam.
We then had a tossed salad with Green Goddess dressing. Paired with a 2019 La Playa Unoaked Chardonnay from Chile.
The main course was a Mexican Green Chile Pork Stew over Saffron rice. Paired with a 2012 Recuerdo Torrontes from Argentina and a nice addition from our hosts; 2014 Soquel Intreccio, a Napa Bordeaux blend.
Dessert was a walnut brownie a la mode. I had brought a Blandy’s 5-year Madeira to pair with dessert but I had also brought a 2008 Santa Ema Merlot for the entree that we didn’t use and since most of the group does not like sweet wines, we used the Merlot to pair with dessert.
@jmdavidson1@karenhynes
Indeed! After seeing your 18 WS I went looking for one of mine! Love WS and even better so does the boss went with this instead because it was right in front of me…tomorrow WS.
2004 Bogle Vineyards Merlot
No idea where this came from, but appeared in a random case. Disagree with CT (surprise); perhaps a bit past prime, but still quite tasty fruit, if a bit ‘mellow’ at this point.
2010 Scott Harvey OVZ (magnum) at Texas de Brazil to celebrate our Son’s birthday. I woke up this morning with the meat sweats! Guess I can’t hang like I used to…
Yeah!
40-day aged 1 1/2" Ribeyes, nicely charred on the outside, med-rare in the middle, with;
2012 Notre Vin Cuvee L’Etrier.
SWMBO loved the wine, but I thought it was a little too smooth, too well-integrated. I tend to like a little gnarly tannin.
Ok guilty as charged, I pushed the de Negoce button probably too many times. Well 25 or so times. And really not too many times because some really solid wines. But this one not so much. Kind of forgot about it. Bottle 1 of 12. Fresh picked crab cakes saved the day.
A few from Friday. There was also a Gobelsburg but I didn’t get a pic. Forgot to snap the food but we had a nice smorgasbord of Thai/Chinese dumplings, wraps, rolls, and eggplant. Everything was delicious.
@rjquillin $
Delicious! Wish I had more. Right in the drinking window, i.e. tannins were soft and fruit was pronounced. Not decanted but drank over 2 hours.
@jmdavidson1@rjquillin I think I have a bottle of this hiding somewhere. I recall drinking one in it’s youth and almost going down the drain. Gifted one shortly after that.
2011 Louis Latour Saint Véran Les Deux Moulins
Quiet lively, and better than I recall the last bottle from a bit over a year ago; with some broiled pink trout and trimmings.
2007 Cabot Vineyards Tributary
And a whiskey/peach mixed drink since we pulled about 15 lbs of peaches off our tree today. Anybody want to come over and help out with the peaches?
With some leftover heavily garlic butter chicken, leftover pasta and this utterly fantastic white! Oh and some peaches sound great! I’ve been thing of making some salsa etc
Cooking up some Flannerys for an anniversary dinner and opening a 2008 Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2008 Beringer Nightingale for dessert. (Not to be confused with a desert wine…)
@hscottk That is definitely on my top ten list. Consistently good and mostly easy enough to find around here. Honestly all of Russian River’s stuff is fantastic.
Scott’s special, drivethrough version: Fried chicken from the supermarket, plus a ton of green stuff: beet salad, cole slaw, roasted veg, and fresh corn. Nothing I needed to cook, except for nuking the corn, that makes everything even more delicious. All washed down with Gruet Brut Rose, recently acquired on this very site.
@klezman Doing very nicely, black fruit smooth tannins. Went very nicely with the Hanger. No rush to drink up but is in a very enjoyable drinking place.
2014 Gérard Bertrand Wild Woman Rose w/
Creamy herb baked chicken, spinach ravioli and sliced potatoes and onions fried in bacon grease and doused with paprika.
@jmdavidson1
Oops, wrong OP; but good to know the Audrey is no rush since I do have a few. That roll is looking tasty as well. @rc70, how are the Ardente doing…?
@jmdavidson1@rjquillin
Still drinking nicely, fruit is faded but still there, lots of secondary flavors. I did a short decant, the glass I’m drinking now has been out of the bottle for about 3 hours and hasn’t changed much. A nicely aged Cab. Last one of this vintage.
So I went to whole foods and picked up two pre seasoned half chickens something I never do because that damn store is just stupid overpriced! Anyways one of them still had the backbone in ugh so I broke out my poultry scissors and took it out but then wth took out the boneing knife and took out the rib bones and weird cartilage from the breast. Good call easy to slice the feast for Andrea while I ate the good parts with french fries which was a major disappointment I had my heart set on tater tots
@kaolis
Really really good! You are a bad man kaolis just received my first box of Campo Grande cause of you and am looking forward to cooking this bad boy tomorrow
@kaolis
Great cut of pork! Dry brined overnight soaked the canelli beans overnight and braised with thyme oregano and some whole grain mustard. Jesus it was good and the wine did not suck
Out in the woods with the kids for the long weekend. First camping trip for the 3 year old.
Pork chops with 2013 Engracia Pinot Noir
Steak with 2011 Notre Vin Cuvée l’étrier
Pizza with 2016 Ridge Ponzo Zinfandel
@chipgreen this bottle was a bit oxidized but otherwise no signs of decline. No idea if my last two will also be oxidized or if this was just a wonky cork.
@klezman
Thanks. I had a similar experience with one of Mike’s Chardonnays from the same vintage but the next bottle was great. Sitting on a few of each, hoping for the best!
@klezman Enjoy them little ones! We all have different visions of camping… my bride’s version is the campground that says Marriott over the door… but we have a few years on you
@klezman revisited this again this evening. Perhaps 300ml or so remaining in the 750, capped, no Ar, in the fridge. Were I to write notes this evening, they would vary little from your, and other, notes from the '11~'13 window. With Kali burgers, soft tannins, dust, leather, sweet fruits still present, a bit of pepper; no Eth to speak of. Refined and delightful, almost elegant, but the Kali was almost a bit too much for it. Now my last bottle, sadly, is consumed…
Seems it’s time to visit other bottles from Chaim to see how they are doing.
It’d be nice if @winedavid49 could try to refresh the connection.
Our friends showed off their Blackstone griddle by making chicken, steak and vegetable fried rice hibachi for Memorial Day. Now my wife is talking about getting me one for Father’s Day.
The Nico was a “dry” Moscato but still had a little sweetness. Over half the bottle left, the other three were drained quickly.
Finished a 2018 Sabelli-Frisch Mission La Malinche
and opened a 2013 Wellington Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County, with home made cheese and pepperoni pizza, cooked in the grill on a pizza stone, all very good.
@jmdavidson1 BTW, how was the Bell? I opened a 2012 a couple of weeks ago, and found that it was past its prime, unfortunately. Maybe if I had stored it somewhere cool all these years, instead of at room temp, I’d have had a better result. Though my Wellingtons are still hanging in there nicely.
From the image at the top of this page, I think @mediocrebot may be trying to tell us something:
@Mark_L
Microbot doesn’t know sheet
Well since my physical and blood work came back good (go figure) whipped up some chicken and waffles last night
![Roessler Carignane][1]
Last bottle of this across 2 vintages. They were all good, this one still singing.

Latest CT note on this is interesting. Since when is 13.8% ‘low abv’? I do agree it’s a bit cloudy but drinking very nicely. And those Flannery hangers are simply divine. Had to make room for the new order!
@hscottk
Nice! Are those the new aged hangers or the regular?
@hscottk @ScottW58 I really want to try those aged hangers but have no room to make an order!
@klezman @ScottW58 a mix of regular and dry aged hangers are en route. These are “classic” hangers from a previous order. Really looking forward to trying the aged!
@hscottk @klezman
Mine are in so if I have a good round of golf tomorrow I will make a set
@hscottk @klezman @ScottW58
Mine are scheduled for tomorrow, and sausage.
No travel shock worries on those!
@klezman @rjquillin @ScottW58 my add-on was an order of lamb riblets, based mostly on your posts.
@hscottk @klezman @ScottW58
Oh hope you like them.
I think I ended up ordering 5 or 7 of them. Cooked two so far; broiled per Brian’s notes.
2014 Harvest Moon Zinfandel Single Vineyard Pitts Home Ranch Estate
And I’m using the trimmings from home dry-ageing beef to make burgers. I don’t think this’ll be Flannery level, but I’m hoping it’s good!
2018 Deaver Alicante Bouschet Amador County - BD purchase - nice wine
2005 McClean Syrah w/
Gnocchi in Arrabiata sauce, mixed veggies & cheesy garlic bread.
@chipgreen That’s a blast from the past! 2013 from the old site. $11 per on a liquidation sale.
@msten
Yes, $11.50 in 2013 after initially paying $23 in 2012. Happy to still have a handful of bottles left, mostly 2007s.
@chipgreen @msten I have one of the 2005s left, from May 2013. Maybe I should open it on the 17th, my 10th anniversary of buying it?
@chipgreen So have the years been kind to it?
@InFrom @msten
Yes, especially on Day 2
@chipgreen @msten A bit o’ day-drinking?

@kaolis
Lol I’m retired I don’t know what day it is let alone month!
@rc70
I remember those how are they doing?
@ScottW58
Drinking very nicely, I’m finding well made 11’s in general are just coming into a nice window.
I grilled some steak and finished off the Wellington Mohrhardt Ridge cab from last night. Then decided to open up this unusual bottle that I bought ages ago. It’s a red dessert wine with braille on the label. Oh and it’s 17% abv.
@kawichris650 some interesting bottles tonight
2013 Wente CS nth degree. Only bottle I’ve ever had and it was delicious. Went well with a bone in rib eye.
@rc70 and…?
Do I need to go find these bottles anytime soon?
@rjquillin
Nope, plenty of life. If you run across one in your stash drink it for your enjoyment not because you need to.
I know something different right? …pile of meat…Flannery dry aged hanger
@kaolis Don’t pretend piles of meat for dinner aren’t delightful!
@kaolis @klezman Thoughts on the dry aged hangers?
@kaolis early adopter you are!
both the OG N.02 and the aged hangers…
About to throw some duck legs into the oven and open a 2011 Matello Pinot Noir Whistling Ridge Vineyard Ribbon Ridge
@klezman I’ve had a hankering to do that, just toss in oven and roast for a bit?

@kaolis @Mark_L yeah, about the same as you’d bake/roast chicken thighs. Skin comes out nice and crispy, of course. Not as rich as confit. I did 375 for about 45 minutes.
Incredibly overpriced ymmv but also incredibly delicious! Even makes my tube steaks better
@ScottW58 chardonnay?
@klezman
It’s the To Kalon I block fume Blanc, I guess they only sell it out of the tasting room but occasionally you can find it.
@klezman @ScottW58 been awhile, but I’ve had that before. It is tasty
@kaolis @ScottW58 ah, a Sauvignon Blanc. That makes more sense.
@chefjess How’s it doing?
@hscottk
Light, bright, fruity even after decanting for several hours. Better as the evening progressed. This is a lovely summer sipper just to enjoy without contemplation as there’s not much complexity at this young age. The Coury Clone, tasted a few months back, was more robust and further developed.
@chefjess Thanks for the feedback. I have a few ‘19 Hyland (and a ‘17 as well). Will cellar the Maresh a while.
2012 Jose Michel Grand Vintage Brut
Mystery case bottle. Very nice!
@hscottk how did that pairing work out?
I’ll occasionally do bubbly, but generally sake, as last Friday.
@rjquillin Bubbly is our go-to, but I’ve generally found PN to be a reasonable pairing for sushi. It’s light enough to not overwhelm the fish but can also hold its own with some stronger flavors. Not perfect, but good enough.
Andrea wanted to go out to dinner and drink great wine, I told her to pick the wine. She did well
@ScottW58 yeah you two did alright!

@klezman Thanks for the note. Will definitely decant the next time I try one.

@ScottW58 Weird…the bottle of that I had last year was not flabby. I guess it’s bottle variation time.

plenty of sed; grilled Flannery Italian sausage, cob corn, beans, rice, green stuff
Flannery hangers.
@rc70 how’s that Malbec doing?
Last night’s leftovers with a couple poached eggs, no wine this early tho
@ScottW58
Nice! I love adding eggs to leftovers for the perfect breakfast.
Nice presentation and on a paper plate, no less!
@chipgreen
I’m old and lazy paper helps
2015 Alberto Orte Valdeorras A Portela (Mencía)
Pork chops, salad, and corn because it’s corn season down here!
Locally sourced flank steak with garlic risotto and brut rose cava.
@kawichris650
Nice!
2009 Pavi Dolcetto
A delicious IH chard to go with lobster rolls and a side of fresh corn, black beans and green pepper.
@jmdavidson1 2018 IH Unoaked Chardonnay here
@jmdavidson1
Looks great!
@rc70 Those aged Ardente’s were very good. How was this vintage holding up?
@jmdavidson1 @rc70
Any decant, or straight to glass?
I was thinking about these a few weeks ago as well.
Absolutely need to dig out some of the earlier ones, in hope that they are still drinkable.
@rc70 @rjquillan No comment. Not my wine.
@jmdavidson1
Oops, wrong OP; but good to know the Audrey is no rush since I do have a few. That roll is looking tasty as well.
@rc70, how are the Ardente doing…?
@jmdavidson1 @rjquillin
Still drinking nicely, fruit is faded but still there, lots of secondary flavors. I did a short decant, the glass I’m drinking now has been out of the bottle for about 3 hours and hasn’t changed much. A nicely aged Cab. Last one of this vintage.
Mystery Case. Nice.
Happy (early) Friday!!
@karenhynes
Whew made me think it was Friday for a second
@karenhynes @ScottW58
Haven’t yet tried the '17.
Have you tried the '18 yet? It was quite good.
@rjquillin @ScottW58
Hmmmm…I must have some of that around somewhere. Someone needs to do a rack re-organization.
2009 Wellington Victory Reserve
Finally remembered it’s Wednesday
And this was an easier find than some Ardente
@rjquillin
If I recall correctly, I think Peter said the 09 was one of his favorites.
@kawichris650 Thanks for that update!
Good to know as I’m sitting on nearly two cases,
and this one is doing just fine.
Always a solid drinker.
@jmdavidson1
Agree, always a solid drinker. CT says I have a 2013 hiding somewhere, need to find and drink.
@rc70 They are permanently closed. (sad face).
@msten
Did the Passing Time come with a complimentary pair of Isotoners?
@msten We used to love the K syrah, still love the name, but recent vintages don’t seem as good. YMMV.
@chipgreen classic
@davirom just starting into a mixed case of ‘15,’16s
This was lovely
@chefjess
Ha! Good call different vintage tho
@msten this one I’m also curious about; a BD pickup.
Happy (real) Friday!!!
@karenhynes and you made me look…
I had no idea I even had any!
@rjquillin
The PS?
No rush…lots of life left.
Though I need an Ah-So to get the cork out.
@karenhynes Yup, the PS.
Tender cork noted, tnx
Neighborhood Porch time season begins.
messy bit of lamb leg
Star of the night was fresh picked asparagus…good to be hangin’ in the Midwest for 'sparagi season…ha!
@kaolis
Nice! But some of that meat is blue, you have a shortage of coals
2016 Gulfi Sicilia Nerosanlorè Nero D’avola
Made some empanadas with a avacado/crem fresh and harrisa dipping sauce, pretty f’ing good if I don’t say so myself

Those look dang good…Volnay tasty?
@kaolis
Really really good! You are a bad man kaolis just received my first box of Campo Grande cause of you and am looking forward to cooking this bad boy tomorrow
@ScottW58 Bad, hardly…I’m too old to be bad! Haven’t had or ordered the coppa. Looks like an interesting cut, awaiting your thoughts.
@kaolis
Great cut of pork! Dry brined overnight soaked the canelli beans overnight and braised with thyme oregano and some whole grain mustard. Jesus it was good and the wine did not suck
@ScottW58 Well that looks great…nicely done with the beans. 3-4 hour cook? I’m soooo bubble challenged
@kaolis
Seared then right around 3.5 hrs cook. It was a little less than 3 pounds.
Thought this posted, got distracted flipping unflipping locking unlocking my phone…
'18
@kaolis
Nice!
And really what leftover isn’t better with an egg in the morning
@ScottW58 My yolk runneth over, appropriate for a Sunday indeed
@ScottW58 eggpanada?
And paired with…nothing. Just wonderful by itself.
Out in the woods with the kids for the long weekend. First camping trip for the 3 year old.
Pork chops with 2013 Engracia Pinot Noir
Steak with 2011 Notre Vin Cuvée l’étrier
Pizza with 2016 Ridge Ponzo Zinfandel
@klezman Ah, roughing it I see
@klezman
How is the Engracia holding up?
@davirom if I’m car camping I should take advantage of not having to carry it all around with me!
@chipgreen this bottle was a bit oxidized but otherwise no signs of decline. No idea if my last two will also be oxidized or if this was just a wonky cork.
@klezman
Thanks. I had a similar experience with one of Mike’s Chardonnays from the same vintage but the next bottle was great. Sitting on a few of each, hoping for the best!
@klezman Enjoy them little ones! We all have different visions of camping… my bride’s version is the campground that says Marriott over the door… but we have a few years on you
@kaolis we do! The littlest one hiked 6 miles, too. Success all around!
2006 C.G. di Arie Zinfandel Southern Exposure
@rjquillin that still any good?
@klezman quite
@chipgreen I remember RBW! Was bummed when they shutdown.
Finished a 2018 Sabelli-Frisch Mission La Malinche
and opened a 2013 Wellington Cabernet Sauvignon Sonoma County, with home made cheese and pepperoni pizza, cooked in the grill on a pizza stone, all very good.
2010 Wellington England Crest Syrah
I H pinot Gold Ridge 2018. Bell CS 2014. Charles Woodson twenty four 2009.
@jmdavidson1 Looks good, but what did you drink this month?
@jmdavidson1 BTW, how was the Bell? I opened a 2012 a couple of weeks ago, and found that it was past its prime, unfortunately. Maybe if I had stored it somewhere cool all these years, instead of at room temp, I’d have had a better result. Though my Wellingtons are still hanging in there nicely.
@InFrom I’m stuck in May. LOL
@InFrom The Bell was excellent. My MW basement works perfectly.
@InFrom @jmdavidson1
So, we have that going for us. Which is nice.
