A Pennsylvania Cab Sauv. The winemaker gave this to us as we were leaving. We met up there with @edlada (from Poland) and his German friend along with @bahwm and @ddeuddeg a few years ago.
Ed’s German friend brought along a bottle each of Mouton Rothschild and Cheval Blanc. While the Cheval Blanc was very good, the Mouton was quite possibly the best wine I have ever tasted.
Back to the Cab, cork was saturated all the way to the top, slight staining on underside of capsule but wine does not taste oxidized at all.
It’s actually a nice, easy drinking Cab. I’m impressed that it has held up this well, especially given the condition of the cork.
@chipgreen A little late to the party but I finally found this again to answer. If you liked the Mouton, you would have enjoyed the special tasting we had with Uli and some others in Autumn of 2018. We started the evening with a 2001 vintage French bubbly. I am not a big fan of bubbles in my wine but this was the first aged one I ever drank and it was quite nice. Then on to the main event. It was, to say the least a memorable evening. Come on over and I can’t promise a repeat of this special evening, but Uli certainly certainly has some very nice Bordeaux still in his cellar. A horizontal as it were from 4 different negociants.
@DanNC I do, but there are a few others that offer that same “vanilla bomb” quality for a lot less $. For example Red Schooner, Austin Hope, Grand Durif, Anniversario 62 Primitivo etc. And, I’ve still got a couple of the 40th anniversary Caymus 750’s and liters, which are so expensive now that I don’t want to drink them.
Excellent evening in Akron with @chipgreen (but sadly not his lovely bride). He brought a 2007 Expressions 44 Roserock Pinot Noir and a 2010 Charbonieres CdP (specific vineyard not in the memory banks).
Great food and even better company!
@klezman
It was great to spend time with you. So glad that Akron was added to the itinerary!
The CdP was 2010 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale Les Hautes Brusquières. Not a WTSO or LB purchase as I suspected but a retail buy from HDHwine.com auction house in Chicago. They had some good deals back in the day…
@danandlisa
Not familiar with them, but you may have noticed that I live Pinot! I don’t recall seeing them here… Maybe we should sic @winedavid49 on them. It’s cooling off and I might be prone to more ordering these days.
@danandlisa@karenhynes@Winedavid49
I’ll second they make really good juice, I currently have about 10 bottles over 3 vintages and 4 vineyards and have enjoyed every Panther Creek I have drank.
Chappellet Signature Cabernet, 2011.
Excellent! One of my favorites.
Just got some of the 2016 (96 points, Parker)
so I had to try an older one.
2016 can be had for ~ $57.
Finishing off the 2007 Kluge Estate Albemarle Simply Red from 6 days ago. Approximately a half bottle, under Vacu-vin, and it is as good or better than it was last week. It may not be the Argonaut of wine preservers but for $10 or so, the Vacu-vin has definitely been one of the best wine accessories I have purchased to date.
I’ll have the second half of the 2013 Byington Cabernet Sauvignon, Bates Ranch, Santa Cruz Mountains. It was quite good last night - my preferred style of earthy and herbaceous Cabernet.
Gloria ferrer Blanc de noirs with take out Chinese, not a typical combo for a fantasy football draft night but just getting home from vacation and it’s what the dr ordered.
2015 Buty Merlot/Cabernet Franc Conner-Lee Vineyard
NV Twisted Oak Cockamamie - recent CM offer
Flannery burger rich blend with a housemade ranchero sauce.
@klezman Had my last bottle last weekend. Liked it much more than the bottles we had months ago when we first got them. I had previously intended to not get it again if it came back, but now not so sure.
@klezman While this still has a drinking window of x-years, I would say you can start drinking it. The tannins are smooth and the fruit still fresh. Very enjoyable. Not particularly complex. I think there was something in Anthony’s notes, as well, where he says to drink this within about 5 years.
@ScottW58 pretty decent, nothing to go out of your way to pick up. Good Sonoma cab structure, light oak, some alcohol. I might pick up a few more as a decent mid week bottle.
@rjquillin Cheap and tasty. Certainly nothing we’d brag about. But something we’d just randomly decide to get on a weekend evening. (More realistically, when pregnant wife says “I’d like sushi for dinner” it tends to happen.)
2007 Kluge Estate Albemarle Simply Red
2008 Trump Winery Simply Red
-consecutive vintages of the same wine, reflecting the change in ownership from the bankrupt Patricia Kluge to Donald Trump who handed control of the winery over to his son Eric.
@hscottk@PatrickKarcher@rjquillin Hey Ron, no fair editing the typo in the OP after the fact, wise guy! What was the harm of leaving it that way? A little humor never hurt anyone!
@hscottk@InFrom@rjquillin He had a typo originally saying “2023” Tudor PN, rather than 2013. He fixed it to 2013, but I know see that, for fun, he put back in his original typo. Bravo!
@hscottk@PatrickKarcher@rjquillin He made a typo, but couldn’t have fixed it once the 5-minute editing window passed. But, our local volmod could do that! But I believe he forgot to add the requisite emoji. Like so:
@bolligra I corked 1/3rd of the bottle last night and left on the counter, just poured a glass - think its even better tonight and it was damn good last night.
@ScottW58 Finishing it off tonight. Damn I love this stuff! My daughter and her boyfriend bring me a bottle every time they visit. Duty-Free at the CDN border @ $30US/bottle.
To finish off September…
I’ve been in a “life is too short to drink bad wine” mood.
Today I thought "OK, let’s try some Cameron Hughes.
2012 Lot 555 Napa (Rugherford) Cabernet.
It’s darn good! Very dark, great nose, great fruit, the right amount of vanilla and just a touch of bitterness at the end.
Don’t be afraid to buy CH wines!
@FritzCat@rjquillin I thought CH Wine was gone…or maybe it’s just that Cameron is out of it now. Is the notable source one of our Amador winemaking friends?
2007 Moran Manor Anagram
I had the last bottle and it was disjointed and past its prime, this bottle was perfect. All together, dark red and black fruits, elegant perfume, very slight tannin presence, just seems all together. A great bottle. If you still have some, enjoy them.
Do you think I used enough butter in those Chanterelles??
@ScottW58 I love it when it’s chanterelle season at Costco! I’m on my third pound already.
@klezman
YES!
@klezman @ScottW58 so just cook in a boatload butter and enjoy?
@klezman @Winedavid49
Well I start cooking them dry to get all the water out then add butter and garlic. But really you don’t need that much butter
@ScottW58 @Winedavid49 Yeah, just enough butter to get them nicely browned. And plenty of salt!
@hscottk had a quick thing to say 2 hours ago
2008 Congruence cab & 2008 Wellington Victory with prime tomahawk ribeye. A nice way to start the month!
Friday & Saturday Birthday dinners, wonderful dinners and excellent wines.

It’s not quite Mouton Rothschild, though.
@chipgreen A little late to the party but I finally found this again to answer. If you liked the Mouton, you would have enjoyed the special tasting we had with Uli and some others in Autumn of 2018. @edlada
Impressive! Nancy has been talking about a European vacation, maybe I can convince her to add Poland to the itinerary!
I’m through with drinking wines from the future. Tonight, NV Vino Noceto Rosso.
After dinner we went to Augustine’s wine bar got a nice glass of Barolo to close the night
They had a nice list tonight!
@ScottW58 thats very cool, im glad there is nothing like this near me, otherwise i might be in more trouble than i already am.
You’re not the only one to whom it occurred, clearly.
@InFrom
Although he was the first…
@chipgreen He was indeed. Though it didn’t take the internet sands of time very long to bury his post. And it wasn’t buried very deep.
@InFrom @chipgreen I missed that. Must have been too much wine!
2012 Williams & Selyem Russian River pinot.
@DanNC
Yum!
2014 Caymus, and it’s the most over-hyped, low qpr wine I’ve had in a while. Unless you like vanilla bombs.
@DanNC Another I just tried (same manufacturer…yes, manufacturer) is 2016 Quest. Same taste, and at $22 case price I couldn’t hep mysef.
2008 Esoterica by Kent Rasmussen PS
@jmdavidson1
How is this progressing?
Was it the PN that some mentioned as being a bit sketchy?
@rjquillin After a 30 minute decant, this was delicious. Not sure what PN some mentioned as being sketchy. (???)
@jmdavidson1 Kent’s 2008 Pinot Noir, iirc, but it could have been a different vintage, 2009 perhaps.
Excellent evening in Akron with @chipgreen (but sadly not his lovely bride). He brought a 2007 Expressions 44 Roserock Pinot Noir and a 2010 Charbonieres CdP (specific vineyard not in the memory banks).
Great food and even better company!

2004 Panther Creek Shea vineyard Pinot. My very last bottle and it is a sad evening. Still drinking beautiful.
@danandlisa
Not familiar with them, but you may have noticed that I live Pinot! I don’t recall seeing them here… Maybe we should sic @winedavid49 on them. It’s cooling off and I might be prone to more ordering these days.
@karenhynes @Winedavid49 That would be amazing. They make really good juice along with others. Barrel tasting is fun at Panther Creek.
@danandlisa @karenhynes @Winedavid49
I’ll second they make really good juice, I currently have about 10 bottles over 3 vintages and 4 vineyards and have enjoyed every Panther Creek I have drank.
2014 Campesino Syrah with smoked/BBQ ribs and orzo salad
@jmdavidson1 January is closing upon us rapidly.
@jmdavidson1 @rjquillin a surprising amount of campesino was offered in the recent last bottle marathon. I picked up a mixed case.
We are observing Pie & Beer Day (or, as they call it in Utah, Pioneer Day) a bit late. Aside from beer we’ve got a 2013 Turley Cobb Vineyard Zin.
It’s rocking! Not everything has to be 10 years old to drink for me At least thank God, especially my Zins.
@ScottW58 They’re tasty enough young, but the Ridge wines just sing when they’re older.
Where’s everyone hiding?
2014 Flying Goat Pinot Noir, Dierberg Vineyard with tomato/garlic bread and trout livornese. Cheers!
@karenhynes
Did we miss Mr September??
@karenhynes @ScottW58 I thought we may all be waiting for October.
@rjquillin @ScottW58
How rude of me! Please meet Mr September (and the trout).
@rjquillin
Crap. Hey, Ron! Can you fix that? I forgot how.
@karenhynes
ugh, I got nothing for this one.
Looks like a dead link.

@hscottk Yeah, I stay away from that one and the Inzinerator for that reason.
@hscottk @klezman Probably not one of his favorite wines either.
2015 Bell CF
@jmdavidson1 Too early? Nice drinking window? Definitely need to figure out when to drink these…
@klezman While this still has a drinking window of x-years, I would say you can start drinking it. The tannins are smooth and the fruit still fresh. Very enjoyable. Not particularly complex. I think there was something in Anthony’s notes, as well, where he says to drink this within about 5 years.
Last night with a Miso chicken salad. 2014 Cantina dei Produttori Nebbiolo di Carema Carema Riserva
A rather mediocre 2016 Tuscan wine of unknown composition. But sometimes you take what you can get, especially when in Columbus, OH.

@chipgreen @InFrom @klezman

2015 Tawse Sparkling Riesling Limestone Ridge, Twenty Mile Bench VQA
With some sushi…
@klezman not “to-go”, I hope.
@rjquillin Cheap and tasty. Certainly nothing we’d brag about. But something we’d just randomly decide to get on a weekend evening. (More realistically, when pregnant wife says “I’d like sushi for dinner” it tends to happen.)
2010 Marquis de Bern
With some Flannery tails and New York’s that rather overwhelmed it. The meat deserved better.

2023 Tudor Pinot Noir Highlands Project. A bit one dimensional but tasty.
@hscottk That was a great vintage.
@hscottk @PatrickKarcher Maybe a little 4th-dimensional.
@InFrom @PatrickKarcher @rjquillin It’s either a 2013, or that Plum wine dispenser comes with a setting to sample wines from the future. Take your pick.
@hscottk @PatrickKarcher @rjquillin Hey Ron, no fair editing the typo in the OP after the fact, wise guy! What was the harm of leaving it that way? A little humor never hurt anyone!
@hscottk @InFrom @PatrickKarcher What edit?
@hscottk @InFrom @rjquillin He had a typo originally saying “2023” Tudor PN, rather than 2013. He fixed it to 2013, but I know see that, for fun, he put back in his original typo. Bravo!
@hscottk @PatrickKarcher @rjquillin He made a typo, but couldn’t have fixed it once the 5-minute editing window passed. But, our local volmod could do that! But I believe he forgot to add the requisite emoji. Like so:
Hey Ron, IFTFY!
@hscottk @InFrom @PatrickKarcher @rjquillin
Yeah, the 4th dimension comment flew right over my head because I saw the edited version first.
@hscottk @InFrom @PatrickKarcher
/giphy Back to the future.
2013 Two Jakes of Diamonds Aspects, delicious!
@rc70 I really like this wine!
@bolligra I corked 1/3rd of the bottle last night and left on the counter, just poured a glass - think its even better tonight and it was damn good last night.
Nice bottle last night!

2011 Tallulah Syrah Bald Mountain Ranch, still good but definitely a drink up sooner rather than later.
2014 Domaine Roche Cairanne - with a thick cut pork chop.

That sounds like a lovely southern Rhone at a fantastic price!

@FritzCat
Said Peter Wellington, but I think it was lousy, not bad.
And I hear the recent CH Barbera comes from a notable source.
@FritzCat @rjquillin I thought CH Wine was gone…or maybe it’s just that Cameron is out of it now. Is the notable source one of our Amador winemaking friends?
@FritzCat @klezman Still there.
Lot 691
One time deal, unlikely to repeat.
@FritzCat @klezman @rjquillin Ron you sound quite confident re: the source. Might mean we shouldn’t zzz on it.
2007 Moran Manor Anagram
