Well, my company got bought and so I figure I should open something I’ve had for around as long as my company existed. So it’s a 2006 Eaglepoint Ranch Winery Petite Sirah Eaglepoint Ranch.
I last had one of these not too long after my company started.
2019 Prima Materia Dolcetto, a BD purchase this year. Delightful with broccoli rabe/farfalle/turkey sausage, a delicious dish but not at all photogenic.
Hot! today, hit 44.1, (@cortot 111.4)
digging deep into the cellar
2010 Woot Cellars Triacipedis and the Minotaur’s Chalice
cork was pristine with ~6mm or so of saturation
@rjquillin no love from woot cellars for years. We ought to find that guy. Tooth stain, try a sip of this, don’t spill le black, and a Christmas offering that you could not miss. Long list, all winners.
@chipgreen I am a Bears fan sir, be there no doubt! A good day is a Packers loss although them cheeseheads have certainly had our number for awhile now.
Drinking a 2019 Rutz Cabernet (Estate, Sonoma County).
Reminds me of wines that have a flavor that I don’t particularly like. That flavor shows up for me in CdP, GSM, Carmenere and Pinotage.
Might be my first as well. It’s Musque clone which I am a big fan of but picky on domestic SB with some barrel aging although it is minimal. Short story long this was a onesie I picked up at retail and just bought a few more.
2016 Rancho Maria Petite Sirah
moving things around, UC buy where I just now peeked at the contents. Two of three corks pushed about 1/3 out and a bit of leakage.
CT thinks bbd is '26; this one seems ok, for now.
Dunno…
Had some Morgon ranch tenderloin tips and I was lazy so I threw them in the air fryer oven with some tangy Carolina bbq sauce and crisped them up for 10 minutes. Wow are they great! With cheesy buttery Marsh hen mill polenta, there was green stuff
@kaolis Over the w/e i made prime rib with mashed and had too many mashed left. So, meatloaf seemed like a natural leftover item. Otherwise I’d be making it when it’s colder.
Recent offer of Marchelle Old Vines Cuvee and Zinfandel. Zin was a field blend. Both were great and enjoyed by all during Saturday night neighborhood porch time. 15 Result of a crush was singing for a couple days as well.
So flying 1300 miles for a BBQ, wait what?! Well when the best cook I know is cooking a cow and a whole hog of course first night in Omaha might as well get prepped at the 801 chop house! 20 oz prime bone in filet for the boss and a 24oz prime rib, fried lobster, wedge salad, creamed corn and a chocolate souffle woof.
@klezman
Sadly we missed that auction by a few seconds but this will be nice 8 20 pound briskets and a whole hog go in tonight for a long cook. I will try to get picks. Somewhere out in Iowa between Des Moines and Omaha, I guess this will do
@klezman Kenny H who I got to know on another board, he is an engineer who does foundations for skyscrapers his business is in Irvine but lives in Iowa. Flew into Omaha and drove to his house where once a year he throws a big cookout/meat fest lol. Got briskets in tonight and hog on the spit tomorrow morning
@ScottW58 looks amazing! So your not in Nebraska any more either!
Clearly retirement is treating you guys well! When I can smell again we need to get together.
@klezman@ScottW58 need to get that smeller going… supposedly big picture not that difficult but don’t be asking me to sling any pizza dough for you
@jmdavidson1 You made me look:
This wine is named after a wooded area on the Guado al Tasso estate that was destroyed by a famous fire in the early 1900s
@ScottW58 Looks like he sold out to one of the big companies. I don’t know when I bought this one, but I haven’t bought in quite a while. And, I can’t find a vintage on it.
@chipgreen@FritzCat@ScottW58
The png image was massively compressed either before or at upload and is all of 249 x 347 pixels, pretty lo res to see any detail at all.
@chipgreen@rjquillin@ScottW58 Yeah, that image was stolen from Google. My bottle had nothing before the “California Red Wine”. It did say 15% on the back, and if I wanted to sleuth, I think some vintages had different ABVs.
2009 Torbreck Woodcutter’s Shiraz
Very Good, tastes young.
Again, it’s nice to find aged bottles at the bottom of the cellar.
This is day 2, and it’s even better.
Had a chunk of sausage left from making pizza the other night so whipped up a quick marinara and spaghetti, thanks @chipgreen (is it really marinara if you put meat in it?)… with zin? I’m running out of wine here
@msten Really nice pure red fruits and spice, acid was a bit strong/out of balance needs time I think. Have not purchased a Priorat in many years because of lack of acid, guess they have fixed that
Chicken thighs that I threw on the grill frozen because the pork that was on the menu had a fowl, pun intended, odor. And yes that is cheddar broccoli Rice-A-Roni, yes Rice-A-Roni!..hey it was last minute and I guess I needed a sodium fix
@chefjess so how is that Salon? Exaggerating slightly used to drink the’88 by the bucket thanks to few buds in the biz but of course back then it was reasonable anyway
@ScottW58 15 days later I can smell some stuff now. Not COVID, just a ridiculously stubborn sinus infection after a series of several colds. Started on a second antibiotic yesterday night and started to smell again midday today. I’ve never taken this much medication before.
I don’t know why I haven’t checked out the “what are you drinking” forums before now. Anyway, pictures are the thing; I’ll remember for next time. Cracked the first of these (9/11 offer). One down, eleven to go. The rattage lives up to the enjoyment of this one.
The 2020 Head High Pinot (from Last Bottle) was pretty good but not the classic Pinot style even though it tried to be
First sniff was a little medicine then after that in the glass it smells of dark fruits like blackberry and a little funk
nothing else in there no noticeable alcohol (14%!) so that’s good but not much fruit after that really and definitely not one to keep
it went good with chicken quesadillas
lamb, stuff
@kaolis go big or go home, nice!
@kaolis Lamb looks spectacular. I hope the wine met your expectations. Very nice.
@msten was in a sweet spot for sure
A wow wine on a freaking hot day, with pizza
@ScottW58 you know today was the coolest day of the next several, right? đź«
@klezman
Yup have great Champagne lined up the rest of the week!
emptied in the last few days…
NV Prima Materia Zinfandel Kelsey Bench
pretty decent bottle that still seems fresh
2017 Laura Michael Wines Cabernet Sauvignon Rutherford
been open < than a week, just killed it last night. Plenty of room to grow with this one
2021 Slingshot Cabernet Sauvignon
meh, a Monday or Tuesday bottle that is what it is (was)
[edit] Too funny; I had no idea this would be the Wednesday offer, that should have been a Wellington! (but is still is Tuesday here, now)
Happy Wednesday!
The size of these things is not apparent in this photo, but the last photo demonstrates the size very well.
My sincerest apologies. Simply no room for any green stuff on the plate.
@kawichris650 Apology accepted. Kudos for giving it the old college try. How’s that Cab? I don’t have any of that vintage, just the '13.
@InFrom
The cab is absolutely singing!
Well, my company got bought and so I figure I should open something I’ve had for around as long as my company existed. So it’s a 2006 Eaglepoint Ranch Winery Petite Sirah Eaglepoint Ranch.
I last had one of these not too long after my company started.
@klezman What will that mean for you? Or is it too soon to tell?
@InFrom some cash. Hopefully better opportunities and comp in a larger company.
2019 Prima Materia Dolcetto, a BD purchase this year. Delightful with broccoli rabe/farfalle/turkey sausage, a delicious dish but not at all photogenic.
@CorTot a little warm where you are?
@klezman a bit. Topped out at 112 yesterday, the other days have been more manageable.
2017 QPR - Delicious!
@FritzCat Blast from the past!
Hot! today, hit 44.1, (@cortot 111.4)
digging deep into the cellar
2010 Woot Cellars Triacipedis and the Minotaur’s Chalice
cork was pristine with ~6mm or so of saturation
@rjquillin no love from woot cellars for years. We ought to find that guy. Tooth stain, try a sip of this, don’t spill le black, and a Christmas offering that you could not miss. Long list, all winners.
@msten @winedavid59
~just because he should know as well~
@rjquillin that was my Friday!
112 here. Been awhile since it got that hot.
Drank the IH first then had the Syrah with the ribs.
@chipgreen yum
A smattering of mags from the Bears tailgate yesterday, a win but hard to watch. And the beginning of smoked hot dog burnt ends
@kaolis
You can’t be a Bears fan and a Packers fan. That would be like me rooting for the Browns and the Steelers!
@chipgreen I am a Bears fan sir, be there no doubt! A good day is a Packers loss although them cheeseheads have certainly had our number for awhile now.
@kaolis
My mistake!
@kaolis Any chance you guys are traveling with the team down to Houston this weekend?
Flannery hanger and my last pork cap with a 2014 Saunter ESV cab. What a great bottle! Still life left, but at this point, why wait?
It was only 95 today and after so many days around 110 it seemed downright chilly
Whipped up a Coq au vin, because burgundy is so expensive now I used a half bottle of this wtso buy. It was great in the stew and a nice drink!
@ScottW58 I like that wine a lot, bought a few myself but it’s a tight little momma, at least the one I popped right after purchase
@kaolis
Agree but I had it open for some time while cooking. Either way I have 5 left so they will get some rest.
Ped Rose w/hot buttered cheesesteaks and roasted potatoes.
@chipgreen How did the rosé match up with the cheesesteaks? I would have thought of a red.
@davirom
Yea, my LW wanted a Rose. It was good with the cheesesteaks but I would also normally go with red.
@chipgreen Happy wife, happy life.
Drinking a 2019 Rutz Cabernet (Estate, Sonoma County).
Reminds me of wines that have a flavor that I don’t particularly like. That flavor shows up for me in CdP, GSM, Carmenere and Pinotage.
Garlic to the 10th power!
@ScottW58 Well can never have too much garlic and the wine looks interesting
@kaolis don’t know why but it is a great wine with garlic
'tis the season
finishing up a 2021 Famille Perrin CdR Reserve, bleh
and a 2019 Dry Creek Vineyard Cabernet, tasty for the price of admission
@kaolis
Yum BLT without the L
@ScottW58 In the spirit of transparency I slipped in a small iceberg lettuce leaf
If you didn’t buy this when it was cheap I feel sorry for you Italian wine at it’s best imho!
@ScottW58 yes, like so many italian wines, old pricing was great. Now, …if you can even find them.
@jmdavidson1 @ScottW58 Know the producer, not that bottling. Of course now I have to source a bottle of this I suppose
@jmdavidson1 @kaolis
You can thank me later
@jmdavidson1 @kaolis @ScottW58
The trio of enablers
@kaolis @rjquillin @ScottW58 Said he with a gigazillion bottles.
.
Two delicious and aged wines paired with a prime rib roast, mashed p’s and green beans almondine.
SB and a thigh last night…football prep for lunch today
@kaolis
Nice hunk of bird! How is the SB ? never had one.
Dunno…
A bottle you’ll see later and a comparison of sorts.
Morgan Ranch strip, horseradish taters… with a bottle you’ll see later
@chipgreen how is it? I’ve got a few bottles pending with Cory.
@klezman
Delicious! Bright acidity. Crisp apple, pear and citrus zest on the palate. Longish finish.
@chipgreen @klezman I had a similar impression when ratting this. Looking forward to see how they age!
Had some Morgon ranch tenderloin tips and I was lazy so I threw them in the air fryer oven with some tangy Carolina bbq sauce and crisped them up for 10 minutes. Wow are they great! With cheesy buttery Marsh hen mill polenta, there was green stuff
@ScottW58 nice…never would have of thought of the air fryer…and nice bottle
@ScottW58 Nicely done all the way around.
w/ pepperoni pizza
@chipgreen That offer was a long time ago.
@msten
We call Scott Harvey the “Zin-Master” but Jon’s Zins are comparable, IMHO. This one has aged beautifully.
Twisted Oak, a casemates purchase, to pair with meatloaf, mashed with gravy and peas/carrots medley.
@jmdavidson1 kind of waiting for meatloaf weather, been hanging in WI, warm!
@kaolis Over the w/e i made prime rib with mashed and had too many mashed left. So, meatloaf seemed like a natural leftover item. Otherwise I’d be making it when it’s colder.
Still can’t smell anything, so not drinking anything. Need this decongestant stuff to work!
@klezman
Hope you start feeling better soon!
2017 Waters Capella
Wine dinner went Italian. Great pairings with the dishes
Recent offer of Marchelle Old Vines Cuvee and Zinfandel. Zin was a field blend. Both were great and enjoyed by all during Saturday night neighborhood porch time. 15 Result of a crush was singing for a couple days as well.
Happy Wednesday and early birthday celebration!
@kawichris650
Happy early Birthday!
@chipgreen
Thank you
Day 1 of 4 in Myrtle Beach.
@chipgreen Would I be correct in assuming you carted bottles with you, and that was not locally procured?
@chipgreen @rjquillin
I mean really you don’t cart bottles when you travel??
@chipgreen @ScottW58 Where did my reply go?
Of course I do, especially if I think I may visit another wineaux.
@chipgreen @rjquillin
Speaking of which wtf not in California anymore lol.
@chipgreen @ScottW58 $4.08 this morning for me
@chipgreen @rjquillin @ScottW58 $2.99 regular $4.09 premium
@chipgreen @kaolis @ScottW58
@kaolis @rjquillin @ScottW58
$2.79 in Myrtle Beach
@jmdavidson1
How’s that doing? I’ve yet to open one.
@kawichris650 At a sweet spot. Tannins are soft, fruit hadn’t faded.
@jmdavidson1 Gotta get some Two Jakes into the rotation!
@ScottW58
Looks great! What’s that bottle?
@chipgreen
19 fingers crossed syrah, I just keep telling myself gluttony is not a sin
@ScottW58 did you get the Morgan ranch berserker thing or something?
@klezman @ScottW58 Rough!
@klezman
Sadly we missed that auction by a few seconds but this will be nice 8 20 pound briskets and a whole hog go in tonight for a long cook. I will try to get picks. Somewhere out in Iowa between Des Moines and Omaha, I guess this will do
@ScottW58 So if it’s not Morgan Ranch, who is the best cook you know and why are they doing it in Nebraska?
@klezman @ScottW58 And, should I alert my two kids and families who live in Omaha?
@klezman Kenny H who I got to know on another board, he is an engineer who does foundations for skyscrapers his business is in Irvine but lives in Iowa. Flew into Omaha and drove to his house where once a year he throws a big cookout/meat fest lol. Got briskets in tonight and hog on the spit tomorrow morning
Did pizzas tonight.
@ScottW58 looks amazing! So your not in Nebraska any more either!
Clearly retirement is treating you guys well! When I can smell again we need to get together.
@klezman @ScottW58 need to get that smeller going… supposedly big picture not that difficult but don’t be asking me to sling any pizza dough for you
@kaolis @klezman
Right nothing smells better than a pig basting brisket in the morning
@klezman @ScottW58 giddyup cowboy!
@klezman
Retirement is the best thing I ever did!
@ScottW58 and how was everything?
@klezman
Great time had by all!
@klezman @ScottW58
Very nice!
Day 2 in Myrtle. Made some Mimosas with the TJ’s and OJ from the breakfast bar. Vacationer and some of the Handley this afternoon. Then, a nap.
@chipgreen
Love those views chip!
@chipgreen @ScottW58 Enjoy…
Day 3.
lamb, fresh pea (well they were in the spring) and mushroom risotto
@kaolis spectacular pairing
A lot of Scott Harvey, present and library vintages. With winemaker accompaniment chatter.
Day 4 and we’re out, after an omelette and grits at Harry’s Pancake House.
@chipgreen nice vinos and that omelet, omelette (both correct unlike palate and pallet) and grits looks so simple but got my mouth watering!
From the above referenced Scott Harvey 20th anniversary event…
Jana and Scott, and winemaker Molly discussing a trivia question with an un-named attendee.
@rjquillin
Talk about flying across the country to attend a party!
@rjquillin and I bet he was right about whatever trivia question there was!
A couple of last minute cast iron efforts, tried new dough, different oven but didn’t suck
@kaolis
Now I am the one salivating…
@kaolis Pizza looks great. Nice pairing. IL Bruciato = the burnt. Not sure why you’d name a wine that. Buon appetito!
@jmdavidson1 You made me look:
This wine is named after a wooded area on the Guado al Tasso estate that was destroyed by a famous fire in the early 1900s
Nice spaghetti wine.
@chipgreen nice looking spaghetti…that wine hold up?
@kaolis
Yes, beautifully!
Gary Vaynerchuk’s Empathy Red.
Rich, full-bodied delicious red.
Don’t know what’s in it, don’t know what year.
Still $20 a bottle.
@FritzCat
Wow is he still doing those wines?
@ScottW58 Looks like he sold out to one of the big companies. I don’t know when I bought this one, but I haven’t bought in quite a while. And, I can’t find a vintage on it.
@FritzCat @ScottW58
Can’t make it out but is that a vintage on the bottom of the label where it says " _ _ _ _ California Red Wine"?
@chipgreen @FritzCat @ScottW58
The png image was massively compressed either before or at upload and is all of 249 x 347 pixels, pretty lo res to see any detail at all.
@chipgreen @rjquillin @ScottW58 Yeah, that image was stolen from Google. My bottle had nothing before the “California Red Wine”. It did say 15% on the back, and if I wanted to sleuth, I think some vintages had different ABVs.
@chipgreen @FritzCat @ScottW58
Likely it could be an NV bottling?
w/ Chinese takeout
Some roasted garlic and chili roasted chicken thighs.
@ScottW58
Those chicken thighs look nicely caramelized.
2009 Torbreck Woodcutter’s Shiraz
Very Good, tastes young.
Again, it’s nice to find aged bottles at the bottom of the cellar.
This is day 2, and it’s even better.
Happy Wednesday!
Food photos will be posted later.
Ribeye steaks from Costco, ribs, roasted potatoes with pork belly, bourbon glazed carrots, and corn on the cob.
@kawichris650 party!
2018 Stereophonic Starblanket with sous vide eye of round and green beans.
@davirom looks like a worthy way to treat the round
Morgan Ranch burgers, tasty with a few mesquite chips on the fire…
finished up a 2017 Cave Dog and a 2021 Sun Break Marie-Paule Pinot
@kaolis
Scott would not approve of that ~530nm material on the plate
@kaolis
Hmmm tots!
@kaolis @rjquillin
Tots make everything in the world right
w/ Tuscan herbed pork loin, Swiss cheese spaetzel and buttered mashers.
@chipgreen sounds tasty
@chipgreen How was that old RhĂ´ne blend, besides perfectly chilled?
@msten
Really nice and was a great pairing with the meal.
Had a chunk of sausage left from making pizza the other night so whipped up a quick marinara and spaghetti, thanks @chipgreen (is it really marinara if you put meat in it?)… with zin? I’m running out of wine here
@kaolis
That looks much tastier than our store bought sauce!
Sausage and made some beautiful Yorkshire pudding, drowned them in mushroom gravey cause that’s what I do green stuff was a ailable!
@ScottW58 Nice. Any comment about the wine?
@msten Really nice pure red fruits and spice, acid was a bit strong/out of balance needs time I think. Have not purchased a Priorat in many years because of lack of acid, guess they have fixed that
2018 Murrieta’s Well Petit Verdot Small Lot
GO bottle $25; nice
Chicken thighs that I threw on the grill frozen because the pork that was on the menu had a fowl, pun intended, odor. And yes that is cheddar broccoli Rice-A-Roni, yes Rice-A-Roni!..hey it was last minute and I guess I needed a sodium fix
With Italian food
@chefjess interesting variation in the wines there!
@chefjess so how is that Salon? Exaggerating slightly used to drink the’88 by the bucket thanks to few buds in the biz but of course back then it was reasonable anyway
@kaolis
Salon was tight on opening. Took about 1-2 hours and then was spectacular. Wow.
Behold miso carbonara who knew?
@ScottW58 Not me!
Haven’t dipped my toes at Kelley Fox yet
@kaolis @ScottW58
Nor I, but unlike others I have a very shallow inventory of them and tend to be well into a drinking window first.
How was it?
@ScottW58 miso carbonara?! That’s two of molarchae’s favourite things in one dish. Oy. Once I can smell again I need to make this.
@klezman
Still can’t smell wth did you get the COVID?
@ScottW58 15 days later I can smell some stuff now. Not COVID, just a ridiculously stubborn sinus infection after a series of several colds. Started on a second antibiotic yesterday night and started to smell again midday today. I’ve never taken this much medication before.
1989 Raymond Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve
Ahhh, for the days of 12.5% CS again
Flannery bone in rib steak and a flat iron for swmbo
@rjquillin Sounds like the Raymond was tasty along with the meal
@kaolis It was, and there are two more to look forward to.
Picked up a bit of fresh green stuff yesterday…little chunk of prime ribeye and strip
I don’t know why I haven’t checked out the “what are you drinking” forums before now. Anyway, pictures are the thing; I’ll remember for next time. Cracked the first of these (9/11 offer). One down, eleven to go. The rattage lives up to the enjoyment of this one.
Leftovers Saturday: late supper of a taco truck carnitas taco my wife brought home, and some leftover chicken & andouille jambalaya on the side. Rosé was perfect for the spicy fusion.
@baldwino0 Welcome!
not a bad idea for past offers as well to post to that offer thread so others can follow along and find the notes for reference
@rjquillin Thanks for that pointer!
@rjquillin https://casemates.com/forum/topics/brick-barn-rose-of-grenache
@ttboy23 So that’s why this looks familiar, the Head High, from Last Bottle…I bought the 2014 from them.
