@klezman@Mark_L Rooftops are fun…been a while…they used to be independently owned, pretty sure the Cubs bought out/forced all of them out of business and now the team owns them. Could be wrong.
@kaolis@klezman Many years ago (1984), a guy I worked with was a huge Cubs fan and also a fan of what I recall as being called “Riff’s Roof” across from the left field bleachers. (It was said that some interesting smoke would arise from there.) We caught him on TV during the playoff game with the Padres when the national cameras zoomed in. WGN was prevented by the Cubs organization from zooming in on the roofs, as they didn’t approve of the ability to view games from outside the stadium, but the national TV for the playoffs was under no such restricitions.
Pretty sure I’m having an advanced senior moment here, but…
I seem to recall a bottle shot or discussion here, I thought recently, about T. Berkley, but I don’t recall the details and can’t find it in a posted pic.
@ScottW58 Oh my!
It was really that long ago?
I placed it at just a few months, tops, and went thru all those threads.
sigh…
and thanks.
Any comments, in general, on TB?
So on the 2nd of September 2026 in the year of our Lord God said to me play golf! And I did, then God said to me you will not hit a good fairway wood all day and I didn’t and then God said you will shoot 81, and I said how can I do that if I can’t hit a good fairway wood? And then God said trust your 60 degree wedge and your putter and I did and shot 81 . And then God said for your suffering you can drink until you’re blind tonight. And I said thank you Lord God is great! First bottle up!
@hscottk
Yes, agreed. The 08 had a Clarksmith story associated with it. Something along the lines of a heavily pressed barrel found in a corner was filtered to remove some of the tannins but also removed the pigment. Other wine was added to give it color. I believe Chipgreen was the rat for this if I recall correctly. It’s always been a little different. I’ve primarily used it to braise meat and make a reduction sauce.
This was exactly what I was expecting…simple but tasty. Dark fruits, good acid and just the right amount of tannin to handle soy sauce and wasabi without overwhelming the fish. What more can you ask for in an entry level bottling?
with smoked wings and ribs, slaw and reheated Ina corn cakes…never bought a ton of Cayuse, only a few left, wasn’t on list very long…but I have to say this is in a really nice spot
At a friend’s house yesterday, with an awesome taco bar. Steak, shrimp, chicken and ground beef, with multiple taco sauces, including a delicious homemade Chipotle cream sauce. Mixed fruit, along with tortilla chips and homemade salsa on the side.
@klezman@rjquillin yummy pork and reasonable price…used some new to me briquets and lump as well, B & B, I like, might be able to use less charcoal after all, recommended
No stock, but hey maybe I should get a participation trophy?
@rjquillin perfect looking protein, and side, and vino… good combo for a hot day…crazy hot stuff has left my neck of the woods Wisconsin, although was still crazy hot Chicago burbs the other day…accidentally left my phone in sun in car, not recommended, totally fried grrr
@kaolis@rjquillin Reminds me of my daughter being at the opening Nebraska football game this last Saturday. She sent me a pic of an infared thermometer reading from the field surface: 157.5℉.
A week ago Sunday 10 of us idiots got together for one last meal at a great local restaurant “Juliet” before they closed.
Wines were great but I can’t remember what we ate lol.
@klezman
Yeah sadly all done, great food and a hell of a champagne list at somewhat reasonable prices for a restaurant, but if you share with them they never charged corkage.
Labor Day at another friend’s house. Started with a Biltmore bubbly (did you know that Biltmore is the most visited winery in the US?), followed by a sweet Vignoles from Missouri, for my friend’s daughter who just got engaged. Back on script with an Aussie version of a Rhone white (Marsanne, Roussanne, Vio blend). When the ribs were ready we broke open a d’Arenberg Footbolt Shiraz and a D-Cubed Zin. Sadly, a Briceland Rose was sacrificed to the garage refrigerator. Didn’t get around to drinking it and it got left behind.
@ScottW58 ok it needed a trim, of protein fats lamb not high on the list…other than that geez thought I might have over done it… caught it just in time… quail eggs, hmmm
@kaolis
Gotta ask; you getting this from a retail, as you walk in, or online. Brick & mortar here lack a meat department, at least those that I’ve found, much less lamb. On-line I see, and it looks a bit pricy, but I don’t buy that much lamb either.
Spill it, Walmart, really?
that lower left piece, yup, that’s the one, trimmed just a bit.
@kaolis@rjquillin Just to throw in my 2¢ on Walmart meat. Sometimes you get lucky, like I did earlier this week when I spotted 2 T-bones that were about 1.5" thick, with almost equal strip and filet portions, 4.25 pounds for the 2 of them, $11.97/lb). Left them a little to long before turning, but they were (are – plenty of leftovers) quite tasty! (Each of those grill grates is 9" wide.)
@kaolis@rjquillin Yep, the “humongous” (not really) Walmart in Versailles, MO (pop. 2751). Interesting story about it: “Bud” Walton (co-founded Walmart with his brother Sam) opened a Ben Franklin variety store in Versailles (opened in 1946). They later started Walmart in Rogers, Arkansas. When Bud and his wife Audrey were divorced, part of the settlement was for him to build her a Walmart in Versailles – it opened in 1981, later expanded as a Supercenter (although it still only has a single entrance) in 1985. Up until a few years ago, it was known that Audrey would still come around and “inspect” the store. Another item about it: because of a large population of Mennonites around Versailles (some of who do not drive cars), there is a buggy rack at the side of the parking lot where they can hitch up their horses while shopping.
As Mark said, yep at retail. These are the leg pieces, also usually another leg cut, shanks and loin chops. And wagyu steaks and ground wagyu. Have not tried the wagyu steaks
@hscottk@kaolis
That’s a load of crap! Pardon my French I have had plenty of D’Issans that were very good in-between 5 and 10 years. If you only have one then maybe wait I guess.
@kaolis
Do you go out of your to make my chicken look bad and you’re right I can’t keep up with your sunset and boat dock outside your house lol. How was the bottle?
@ScottW58 that may have come off wrong? keeping up with the ahem simple guy is well, simply never going to happen… prefer the single vineyard offerings quite honestly, but it’s a nice drink
@ScottW58 it’s all about 2006! Funny, I just bought the 2013 on another flash site. It’s like you’re leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that I’m following.
@hscottk
Lol this 06 I didn’t cellar myself bought them not long ago but who doesn’t love the breadcrumb trail like the Hansel and Gretel story And I hope you pop the D’Issan soon so I can decide if I should get some!
@hscottk@ScottW58 Been pretty boring around here, back and forth to IL a few times to see buds and visit only daughter/only child pregnant with first…but speaking of flatiron, I do have a Morgan Ranch flatiron teed up for the Bears game Sunday…
Ah what the heck, let’s eat up some bandwidth…proving nothing going on around here…
patty last night 50/50 Italian sausage/ground beef from my guy and our maters…chicken is the unidentified object with fresh peas well frozen from the spring…pizza, their Sicilian pan, yes round not square, was in Champaign with daughter, was supposed to be Alison Krauss concert but was canceled wah wah…what else…2019 Bedrock OVZ, 2022 neely Hidden Block pinot, another 2021 Guidalberto, did I say boring…a few others I’m sure…
@kaolis@rjquillin
Oh yeah Alison Krauss I would love to see! If only to hear her sing “Down To The River To Pray” my favorite song from “O brother where art thou” thanks for reminding me need to watch that again
@kaolis@rjquillin@ScottW58 She’s a longtime favorite here, too, ever since her début as a teenage fiddle prodigy. That voice! I gather it’s been acting up on her. We were supposed to see her at the Ryman on a whirlwind trip to Nashville a long, long time ago, but she got sick and cnx. I’ve seen her many times both before and since, but the show at the Ryman still feels like the one that got away.
@InFrom@rjquillin@ScottW58 She is a Champaign girl…way back she was at a small venue in Elgin IL and we were front row with spouses…buddy and I still argue over who she chose to focus on for the night as an artist will do…we also both have dispensation to run away with her should the opportunity arise…ha!
@ScottW58 I think she’s probably a hard one to keep up with…
Wine biz is slow as we all know, used to be on the WS list, got off for whatever reason, last order was 2009. No communication since. I received an allocation a couple of weeks ago
@rjquillin
Fancy because I made a GIF? The pizza itself was quite simple. Dough, sauce, pepperoni, sausage, pepper jack, and one sliced jalapeño.
The wine is doing well. The mouthfeel is thin/light (which is to be expected, and perfect for summer) yet there’s still plenty of depth and flavor. The abv of 13.1% also helps keep it light. I’d guess this is probably at or near its peak, but that’s very subjective of course, so YMMV.
The cab was good, everyone enjoyed it. The valpolicella was a mislabeled bottle of perfume. This bottle was better than the last one. Funny how that works.
We enjoyed our visit with the winemaker a few years back. We even got a tour of the Bjornson facility. A solid wine with good acidity that went well with our dinner of choice.
Whatever they’ve got at the Wrigley rooftops. A strange but excellent sounding thing I just learned about.
@klezman Never watched from the rooftops, but been to a number of games. Go Cubbies!
@klezman @Mark_L Rooftops are fun…been a while…they used to be independently owned, pretty sure the Cubs bought out/forced all of them out of business and now the team owns them. Could be wrong.
@kaolis @klezman Many years ago (1984), a guy I worked with was a huge Cubs fan and also a fan of what I recall as being called “Riff’s Roof” across from the left field bleachers. @kaolis @Mark_L yeah the team owns then now I think. The all inclusive aspect is nice even if the quality of the food isn’t great.
Pretty sure I’m having an advanced senior moment here, but…
I seem to recall a bottle shot or discussion here, I thought recently, about T. Berkley, but I don’t recall the details and can’t find it in a posted pic.
Was I just dreaming?

@rjquillin
this thread brought back some memories
Not sure how a man of your skills could not find it
@ScottW58 Oh my!
It was really that long ago?
I placed it at just a few months, tops, and went thru all those threads.

@rjquillin
I’ve never had one?
So on the 2nd of September 2026 in the year of our Lord God said to me play golf! And I did, then God said to me you will not hit a good fairway wood all day and I didn’t

@ScottW58 From Psalm 104:15 "[You make] wine to gladden the heart of man…’
@Mark_L
That is correct and it’s working
@ScottW58
Always nice to have God as your Caddie!
@chipgreen @ScottW58 ha!
With pulled pork sliders and green stuff.
With the rest of the pulled pork and twice-baked potatoes
@chipgreen that makes twice pulled pork to go with them twice baked taters
@chipgreen @kaolis How’s the Ped holding up?
@chipgreen @hscottk @kaolis
I just finished up a '13 MC on Wednesday, and it was doing just fine; fwiw
@kaolis
Ha!
@hscottk @kaolis
Holding up really well. Even the last half glass, left out overnight, was still drinking nicely the next day.
@chipgreen @kaolis Great to hear! I have some 14s (cab and cab franc) I need to pop one of these days.
@jmdavidson1
I have been hoarding my one bottle since the 2014 RPM tour. Glad you opened and enjoyed yours, I should probably do the same.
@chipgreen I figured at 17 y/o we should drink it in case it either was over the hill or on the verge. Still had plenty of life so drink it hold.
@chipgreen @jmdavidson1 glad to hear it!
I’ve got a few of those hanging around of different vintages.
@chipgreen @klezman Who could forget the tasting there during one of the RPM tours? Clone 6, 337,etc. Yumm.
@chipgreen @jmdavidson1 that and the blending workshop at Peter’s were beyond excellent.
Last night finished on day 2 with a takeout cajun broiled fish dinner, still drinking great, tight cork with no penetration and minimal sediment.
2009 Wellington Vineyards Syrah Estate Vineyard Sonoma Valley

A gifted bottle. A fruity frizzante with Braciole.

The last one of these. Used to make Beef Bourguignon.
@msten I always preferred the 07 to the 08.
@hscottk

@hscottk
Good call Vincent makes nice wines!
Made a batch of Chris Lilly’s cast iron smoked Mac and cheese with some crispy Pancetta on top with a brilliant Albarino. And a steak

@ScottW58 sounds like something I should try to make!
@klezman @ScottW58 what he said
@kaolis @klezman
You won’t regret it!
Good eats, Flannery fillet with a mushroom Bordelaise glaze, and a cheap, but serviceable bottle of 2023 TB CF.
@rjquillin that’s a nice plate and an interesting wine, never heard of
with smoked wings and ribs, slaw and reheated Ina corn cakes…never bought a ton of Cayuse, only a few left, wasn’t on list very long…but I have to say this is in a really nice spot
@kaolis
Yeah I was only on the list for 3 releases, they are pretty nice at least the few I have had.
Braciole and polenta.
At a friend’s house yesterday, with an awesome taco bar. Steak, shrimp, chicken and ground beef, with multiple taco sauces, including a delicious homemade Chipotle cream sauce. Mixed fruit, along with tortilla chips and homemade salsa on the side.
VAN GOGH! MANGO! TANGO! AWESOME!
Pad Thai and Velvet Chicken stir fry with an about 10 year old gift basket wine. Wine was served at room temp and chilled. Deliciously different.
Beef Bourg with the 08 WS Pinot.

New to me local farm…Rollen’s grits, quick and dirty onion gravy…
@kaolis that pork?! Such a deep red!
@kaolis do you own stock in Marcassin?
@klezman @rjquillin yummy pork and reasonable price…used some new to me briquets and lump as well, B & B, I like, might be able to use less charcoal after all, recommended
No stock, but hey maybe I should get a participation trophy?
2019 Turley cinsaut, Bechthold Vineyard
Not the charming fruit from a few years ago, but something a bit more earthy and herbal.
I’ve been busy, and not paying attention, that’s a hangar, barely not cold in the center. Perfect for a scorching hot day.
@rjquillin perfect looking protein, and side, and vino… good combo for a hot day…crazy hot stuff has left my neck of the woods Wisconsin, although was still crazy hot Chicago burbs the other day…accidentally left my phone in sun in car, not recommended, totally fried grrr

@Mark_L @rjquillin toasty
@kaolis @Mark_L @rjquillin that’s exactly why we shouldn’t use artificial turf. Well, at least one of the reasons.
A week ago Sunday 10 of us idiots got together for one last meal at a great local restaurant “Juliet” before they closed.

Wines were great but I can’t remember what we ate lol.
@ScottW58 Juliet is closing? I never made it there.
@klezman @ScottW58 helluva lineup, who needs food?!
@kaolis @klezman @ScottW58 You mean???..wine isn’t food???
@klezman
Yeah sadly all done, great food and a hell of a champagne list at somewhat reasonable prices for a restaurant, but if you share with them they never charged corkage.
@ScottW58 Large.

2007 Gardet Prestige Brut

Pile of Walmart lamb…
@kaolis
Jesus man you could have at least rendered the thick white fat!? Or chop it up fine throw an Quail egg on it and say it’s tartare

@klezman
Happy New Year!
Did the Mortadella meatballs with Pistachio pesto again cause damn they are delicious!

@ScottW58 oh yum…I need to try making those…how’s the vino, D’Issan fan
@kaolis
This was a exceptionally delicious D’Issan! Sadly only 1 left of this vintage.
@kaolis @ScottW58 20 years is the sweet spot? I guess I only have to wait 16 years to try the '22 D’Issan I bought this year!
@hscottk @kaolis
I have had plenty of D’Issans that were very good in-between 5 and 10 years. If you only have one then maybe wait I guess.
That’s a load of crap! Pardon my French
@hscottk @kaolis @ScottW58 Ha!
Yeah, same here. But I see CT claims I have some '12 and '18 to help fill in; assuming I can find them.
@hscottk @kaolis @rjquillin
I mean if you don’t try them after your first purchase you will never know if you want to reload!
@kaolis @rjquillin @ScottW58 I like the way you think! I have two so I’ll have to try one soon.
Another youngster and quarters for a quick smoke
@kaolis
and you’re right I can’t keep up with your sunset and boat dock outside your house lol. How was the bottle?
Do you go out of your to make my chicken look bad
@ScottW58 that may have come off wrong? keeping up with the ahem simple guy is well, simply never going to happen… prefer the single vineyard offerings quite honestly, but it’s a nice drink
@kaolis lol all good!
2018 Scott Harvey barbera and 2019 Sabelli Frisch flame tokay lanterna with homemade papusas and carnitas. Enjoyed by all.
2009 Victory with lamb chops. Not from Walmart
Always good.
@klezman probably good call!
Flat iron corn and baked beans life is good! Let’s see what @kaolis comes up with to beat me lol.

@ScottW58 it’s all about 2006! Funny, I just bought the 2013 on another flash site. It’s like you’re leaving a trail of breadcrumbs that I’m following.
@hscottk
And I hope you pop the D’Issan soon so I can decide if I should get some!
Lol this 06 I didn’t cellar myself bought them not long ago but who doesn’t love the breadcrumb trail like the Hansel and Gretel story
@hscottk @ScottW58 Been pretty boring around here, back and forth to IL a few times to see buds and visit only daughter/only child pregnant with first…but speaking of flatiron, I do have a Morgan Ranch flatiron teed up for the Bears game Sunday…
@hscottk @kaolis
You will be very happy! With the steak anyway, good luck to your bears!
@hscottk @kaolis @ScottW58 I’ve been wondering if the picture above represents a flatiron after being “cooked” by @kaolis?
@hscottk @kaolis @Mark_L
Lol
@hscottk @Mark_L @ScottW58 Overcooked? Nah…he caught it just in time
@kaolis lmk if you want to share a bottle while you’re here!
Crab cakes and watermelon, simple but not boring.

@ScottW58 Briords and crab cakes nice…might bring a maggie of that to the game too…I’m channeling the simplicity, ha!
@kaolis
Good call especially if it’s hot!
2019 Chiron Pinot Noir, Lucid Dream
Pork chops and roasted mini cabbage
@klezman
Hmmm roasted mini cabbage is that a secret code for a brussel sprout?
@klezman @ScottW58 lol!
@hscottk @ScottW58 not secret code - just seeing if you were paying attention!
@hscottk @klezman @ScottW58 I was confused, but that’s not hard these days
@kaolis
Krauss would have been good; I’m with you’re daughter.
Food and beverage; just ok
@kaolis
Looks damn nice! Love the maters
@kaolis @rjquillin
Oh yeah Alison Krauss I would love to see! If only to hear her sing “Down To The River To Pray” my favorite song from “O brother where art thou” thanks for reminding me need to watch that again
@rjquillin @ScottW58 have been to more than a few concerts… favorite here too but particularly of my lovely bride
@kaolis @rjquillin
I kid I kid, although you can tell her I said that haha
I knew the moment I met her she had better taste than you
@kaolis @rjquillin @ScottW58 She’s a longtime favorite here, too, ever since her début as a teenage fiddle prodigy. That voice! I gather it’s been acting up on her. We were supposed to see her at the Ryman on a whirlwind trip to Nashville a long, long time ago, but she got sick and cnx. I’ve seen her many times both before and since, but the show at the Ryman still feels like the one that got away.
@kaolis @rjquillin @ScottW58 isn’t she from Champaign originally? It’s one of those weird factoids stuck in my brain.
@InFrom @kaolis @rjquillin
Well damn next time any of you planning to see her let me know cause we will fly out (with wine) to see her
@InFrom @rjquillin @ScottW58 She is a Champaign girl…way back she was at a small venue in Elgin IL and we were front row with spouses…buddy and I still argue over who she chose to focus on for the night as an artist will do…we also both have dispensation to run away with her should the opportunity arise…ha!
No clue what I’m eating so I will try to keep up with @karenhynes tonight

@ScottW58 I think she’s probably a hard one to keep up with…
Wine biz is slow as we all know, used to be on the WS list, got off for whatever reason, last order was 2009. No communication since. I received an allocation a couple of weeks ago
The wine and pizza were both great. Next time I open a Noceto, I’ll remember to use an Ah-So.
@kawichris650 Pretty fancy 'za assembly there!
How’s that '11 doing? I have too many if not well…
@rjquillin
Fancy because I made a GIF? The pizza itself was quite simple. Dough, sauce, pepperoni, sausage, pepper jack, and one sliced jalapeño.
