2016 Virage CF Rose
Started last night, chilled with baked salmon. Was tasty but improved as it warmed. This afternoon at room temp it is much better. The nose is improved, the strawberry and watermelon is present on the palate. What a deal this was.
Last night; Finished the last glass from a bottle of the Virage Rose’. At 11pm we opened a Furthermore Blanc de Noir, some of the best I’ve tasted recently. Then we opened our last bottle of 2012 Ironhorse Russian Cuvée. A little tart at first but very enjoyable.
@merrybill@rjquillin Yeah, it’s doing well now. The alcohol has calmed down a bit and it’s still fruity but much more interesting than the bottle I had 2.5 years ago.
@chipgreen@rjquillin Curious what chipgreen thinks, but the bottle molarchae and I had a few weeks ago was excellent. A nice early teens Napa Cabernet.
@klezman@rjquillin
It’s drinking great, was wonderful with a ribeye. Earthy with dark fruits, well integrated oak and a touch of mint (more so on the nose than the palate).
1st time grilling Flannery’s hanger and the Rudd steaks with 2014 Anderson’s Conn Valley CS. Wow, that was an experience… meat tastes and smells this way? Amazing and worth every penny, we are still talking about the meat. The wine was ok.
Starting off with some 2014 Iron Horse Vineyards Wedding Cuvée
with some Rieslings and saké in the queue.
Also got a 12-pack of samples from Clark.
Could get interesting, or not.
@xandersherry Delicious. A very pale rosé in color, great aromatics with a fine mousse, lively on the palate with just a very minor touch of sweetness, that could be the fruit.
Absolutely no hurry on this one.
Didn’t get to them.
Three different saké and a 2003 Riesling finished off with a very tasty
Emilio Lustau Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Capataz Andres DeLuxe Cream Solera Reserva
perhaps next time, or at a visit a bit North of here.
@Cerridwyn@karenhynes The Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or is aged/finished in Sauternes barrels. Also a good idea.
Not much icewine is aged in barrel - any idea where they got them?
@karenhynes@klezman
Oh, I don’t have that one. I have an Orangerie Scotch though. In one of my Norlan glasses, the orange on the nose is very distinct.
@Cerridwyn@karenhynes Cool…Peller Estates, it seems. One of the few that age in oak. I know Inniskillin does as well. Seems a rather pricey bottle, too.
@karenhynes@klezman
definitely. very limited run twice.
so it’s a seller’s market
when places actually have it , i’ve seen the range of 250-500 a bottle. but remember it is 21 year old glenfiddich to start with
2017 Dry Creek Vineyard Zinfandel with a very nice dinner at Barbianca in Marina Del Rey. Overnighting near LAX for a flight to Costa Rica in the morning, next 2 weeks is beer and rum.
Friends over for dinner last night:
Charles Orban Champagne Cuvée Roger Daltrey - which one of the friends had been given as a gift - very good but wouldn’t splash out for it!
2007 Jana Cathedral Cabernet Magnum - delicious - will probably still improve over time
@chipgreen@rjquillin
Okay I’m changing my story two plus hours in this beauty is drinking perfectly! Beautifully balanced between fruit,acid and tannin. Super complex should continue to age gracefully for many years. Gotta see if I can get more! This was one of the latest releases from the wine club.
Random (eyes closed) selection from the overflow
area in the cellar.
2006 Mockingbird Hill Petite Sirah, Napa Valley.
Really good with the spicy Asian veggies and chicken legs.
@chipgreen@rjquillin I dredged it out of the depths of my bedroom closet storage. Found one of his '13 Malbecs right next to it. I’m going to have to go back for that one sometime, when the menu is right.
@rjquillin@ScottW58 Yeah, I might have to get in on Kelley Fox given all the love it’s been getting. But with them, Ridge, Briceland, and lord knows who else it’s going to be interesting trying to choose. And Turley just hit today as well, and Rivers-Marie is tomorrow. I had one of their Pinots for the first time recently and was absolutely stunned…to the point where I’m actually considering paying $60/bottle for some of them.
2016 Tamarack Firehouse red - Wednesday night red with great qpr. With a little air this punched way above it’s weight class. I’ll be buying a case of this.
@jmdavidson1
I bought these years ago when wine library was blowing them out for $19.99 sadly I have not found any since also it was my last one…still delicious as ever! imho
@rjquillin Was that the one we all really liked at the gathering here? If you have too many I can help out with one or two.
If I’d known you were going to WineX you could have picked up the Rioja I’ve got waiting there.
2013 Bodegas Bilbainas Rioja Viña Pomal Reserva

Flannery burger, roasted broccoli and onions with capers and fish sauce and mixed mushroom risotto.
Had to go light after a BD feast.
@rjquillin Looks delish, though at first glance I thought that ciabatta roll was a potato knish, which somehow didn’t fit the vibe on the rest of the plate.
Roasted veg with capers and fish sauce, eh? Intriguing. Like something the ancient Romans would go for.
@rjquillin It turns out I already had all the ingredients on hand, so following your inspiration gave it a try tonight. Very nice. Though a little salty, what with the capers. I went light on the fish sauce, and skipped the butter, just used some olive oil instead. No picture needed, it looked just like yours.

2016 Virage CF Rose
Started last night, chilled with baked salmon. Was tasty but improved as it warmed. This afternoon at room temp it is much better. The nose is improved, the strawberry and watermelon is present on the palate. What a deal this was.
@pjmartin Beserker Days are approaching, which should mean more can be had. Hard to decide which rose is better, this one or the Campesino Isa.
@jmdavidson1 @pjmartin She still, I think, has that special running from the offer here last month.

The one that started it all… Little Vineyards Band Blend Track 9.
2013 Wellington Field Blend '24
@klezman I keep looking at those.
Should I de-cork one?
@klezman @rjquillin yes
@merrybill @rjquillin Yeah, it’s doing well now. The alcohol has calmed down a bit and it’s still fruity but much more interesting than the bottle I had 2.5 years ago.

@chipgreen
How’s the Jana progressing?
@chipgreen @rjquillin Curious what chipgreen thinks, but the bottle molarchae and I had a few weeks ago was excellent. A nice early teens Napa Cabernet.
@klezman @rjquillin
It’s drinking great, was wonderful with a ribeye. Earthy with dark fruits, well integrated oak and a touch of mint (more so on the nose than the palate).
I’ve got a cellar full of wine.
I’m no spring chicken.
I resolve to drink the good stuff in 2020.

Also got a 12-pack of samples from Clark.
Could get interesting, or not.
@rjquillin bring the samples up for help!
@rjquillin How’s the IH 2014? Just realized I have a bunch of 2013s that I may or may not need to prioritize.
@xandersherry Delicious. A very pale rosé in color, great aromatics with a fine mousse, lively on the palate with just a very minor touch of sweetness, that could be the fruit.
Absolutely no hurry on this one.
@klezman @danandlisa
Didn’t get to them.

Emilio Lustau Jerez-Xérès-Sherry Capataz Andres DeLuxe Cream Solera Reserva
perhaps next time, or at a visit a bit North of here.
@danandlisa @rjquillin I won’t be a bit north of you…I’ll be 45 minutes farther it seems.
And speaking of Wedding Cuvée, @WineDavid49 we need a case (or half case) of 2015 Wedding Cuvée once it’s released for wedding anniversary bottles!
I know it’s not wine but Glenfiddich Winter Storm. Ice wine barrels though
@Cerridwyn
So good!
@Cerridwyn @karenhynes The Glenmorangie Nectar d’Or is aged/finished in Sauternes barrels. Also a good idea.
Not much icewine is aged in barrel - any idea where they got them?
@karenhynes @klezman
I know it was in the Niagra area, on the Canadian side. I think if you read the info on their site it says.
@karenhynes @klezman
Oh, I don’t have that one. I have an Orangerie Scotch though. In one of my Norlan glasses, the orange on the nose is very distinct.
@Cerridwyn @karenhynes Cool…Peller Estates, it seems. One of the few that age in oak. I know Inniskillin does as well. Seems a rather pricey bottle, too.

@karenhynes What’s up with no Mr. Jan, or did I just miss the post?
How’s the PN? Still a bit on the young side, or a long decant?
@karenhynes @rjquillin
Most people here find scantily clad humans to be offensive…well except me
@karenhynes @ScottW58 It would be fitting for equal opportunity with a Miss now and again.
@rjquillin
Ah, yes, how rude of me. Please meet Mr. January.
@rjquillin
As for the Pinot, yes, a bit on the young side but certainly enjoyable as is.
@rjquillin @ScottW58
Rumor has it, there’s a calendar in the kitchen that you might find more appealing.
@karenhynes Young, rather like Mr. Jan.
@karenhynes @rjquillin
Karen rocks!
@rjquillin @ScottW58
If you think Mr. January is young, you should have seen Mr. December.

Roasted veg with capers and fish sauce, eh? Intriguing. Like something the ancient Romans would go for.
@InFrom Recipes for both that and the risotto both came from the latest issue of Food & Wine.
@InFrom @rjquillin Use fish sauce anywhere you need salt and/or umami. Anywhere you’d use soy sauce also. Yum.
