Can copy over what I just posted in the August thread? Let’s see:
2013 Maryhill Winemaker’s Red at dinner, followed by a thimbleful (so far, at least) of 2013 Kacaba Cab Franc ice wine, with which we were recently reunited after some months of its sheltering in Buffalo chez @bahwm and @ddeuddeg.
OK, so this otherwise delightful newish Szechuan place could have done a little better on the glassware, but we keep our expectations low in local places when the corkage is reasonable.
I had to add the photo back in. In the interim, in keeping with the theme of things associated with our January trip to Buffalo, we’re enjoying a couple of pieces of the dark chocolate sponge candy that arrived in the same delivery as the Kacaba. Life is good!

For a belated birthday celebration with family tonight: 2013 Iron Horse Brut, which was lovely as an aperitif and with the soup.
With the grilled, marinated butterflied leg of lamb, we drank 1982 Leoville Barton. Low neck fill. It was gorgeous: still significant black currant fruit on the nose, mixed with cedar, leather, a hint (but just the tiniest hint) of tariness, bergamot, and heather. Color very nice; not a hint of brownness at the edge of the glass. Nice rich entry, combined fruit flavors. good mouthfeel, though a touch more acetic than ideal - on its own only - this was not at all the case with the lamb, where the acid cut the fat and blended spectacularly. Tannins softened, almost completely resolved, but with a very, very long finish. A really lovely Leoville at just a touch past its peak. If you’ve got this in your cellar in 750s, it’s probably time to drink it now and for the next few years. In larger bottles it should be at absolute peak now, holding for several years, and good for at least another decade.
I’ve had some 1982 Bordeaux that did not live up to the reputation of the vintage, especially around the 20 year mark, but this wine was a real treat for all of us. Not, in my view, the equal of the 1970 or the 1961, but a very fine, mature 2nd Growth.
@jmdavidson1
Black fruits, spice, good acidity. It was excellent with the rib eyes at dinner. Has another 7 or 8 years easy. At the tso price very good value, would get more if it comes up again.
I took a chance on these and have 08 09 10 stashed away - going to have to have a vertical tasting.
@jmdavidson1 Nothing wrong with working with former football players. I’m in the process of purchasing a home using a realty office run by a former NFL player (Jason Whittle).
@jmdavidson1@rjquillin – It’s a dilemma - when do you pop a cork to see how a wine’s aging when you expect it to be a long-lived wine. I suppose it depends on how much you have: if you’ve got several cases of a CS based wine, it might make sense to see where it is before it goes to sleep. Although, I presume a serious CS based wine would be sold at least three, maybe four, years after the vintage date. If you have some confidence in your ability to predict age worthiness from tasting when the wine is in commercial distribution (and you bought it), I think it would be superfluous to taste two years later. And, if you don’t have a large quantity of the wine, then one would be less likely to open a bottle before the anticipated ‘earliest mature drinking date’.
2015 Domaine La Grangette Piquepoul Noir Vin de Pays des Côtes de Thau CocoriKo
Piquepoul Noir is a new grape for me too - I’ve had Picpoul, which is a white grape before.

I never have anything good to share, until tonight, but no pictures
2013 The Spaniard which was a random draw from the cellar and so fricking good. With t-bone steak, chestnut mushrooms and onions and the (close to) last local corn on the cob. There are not enough words to describe how much I love Twisted Oak Winery and @eljefetwisted
2006 Scott Harvey Barbera J&S Reserve
Doing well. Plenty of fruits, boysenberry, at PnP, secondary earth with resolved tannins and enough acid to work well with some heavy white sauce pasta.

Followed that up later with 2010 Binigrau Nounat (Spanish white blend of Prensal Blanc and Chardonnay). Sunday night we shared a 2007 Iron Horse Brut Rosé.
2009 Eagles Trace Pinot Noir Valhalla Vineyard
Found in my bulk long term cooler , did not know I had it.
Drank with Charcuterie, excellent. Going to go through that cooler tomorrow and see if I find any more hidden gems I’m not aware of. Could be a very fun weekend.
Finally got around to pulling a cork on something I didn’t even know I had.
This surprises you why?
Despite consuming with spaghetti, and pizza, this is a cut above a spaghetti wine, as time seems to have done it’s thing; think Pedroncelli.
Decent at PnP, we’ll see how it develops.
Edit: not quite the find as for rc70, but it’ll do.
Last night we had a bottle of this: https://www.klwines.com/p/i?i=1328062
We picked a couple inexpensive bubblies to try when picking up some of those bottles of Ridge Scott told us about a while back. Worth the $14 price tag for sure, but it’s not a “wow” bottle.
@ScottW58 Oh, of course not. That was the point. “Wow” would only be in contrast to the price in any case. You know, like when you say “I paid $X but this drinks like it’s $3x - wow!” This one drinks like a $15-ish bottle of Cremant, exactly what I bargained for.
You get my text about this weekend?
@ScottW58 Well, in that case, I didn’t expect a wow wine nor was I disappointed that it wasn’t. I guess the better term would have been that it’s good value but not spectacular value - since that takes price into account!
@klezman just for the day. I’m seeing my Padres (lose) against the Dodgers that night. Since I leave SD early to miss as much traffic as possible, I make the most of it. Last time was a dodger stadium tour and lunch at Langer’s. This time K&L and…?
@klezman K&L was an experience. Every aisle was the greatest hits of wine. Walked out buying a few, but the best was a 2007 Bandol with 10 years of elevage. I had to buy since I appreciate the long elevage of Clark Smith’s stuff. Now I just wait another 20 years to drink it…
Then we finished the evening with a bottle of 2012 Meeker Fro-Zin dessert wine. Essentially Zin picked at normal ripeness, frozen post-harvest to make an icewine-style dessert wine. I love it when those turn out to be great wines, this one did.
Charles Smith 2013 Viognier, purchased right here on Casemates! The red win drinkers’ white wine, as it was described in the forums. I think I agree with that statement…I’m a red wine drinker, but I quite like this…however my wife is a white wine drinker and she does not like this much.
@TimW I gave a set of these to my wife for Christmas and she’s purely a white wine drinker. She really enjoyed it, it’s got a ton of depth. Great bottle of wine.
Two bottles of note last nite: first, I finished my last bottle of Two Jakes Petite Sirah. Hope to see something like that on offer here soon. A good P.S. under $20 (case price) would be very welcome.
Second was a 2016 Honoro Vera Jumilla, “…Made Using Organic Monastrell Grapes”. It’s an interesting wine-- high alcohol (15%) well balanced by plentiful fruit-- and a real value at the ten buck price of a local store. It reminds me of some of the high alcohol, high fruit wines that one sometimes finds among CA Zins, except somewhat different fruit.
One of my “unsung hero” wines from wine.woot. Wines that flew under the radar but ended up being personal faves with great QPR. Almost halfway through my second case of these.
Bonus: This wine also introduced me to the music of Brett Dennen.
Quite good, but might be at the peak. It’s under Nomacork, which I didn’t know until today. I had intended to keep it longer, but the grilled tri-tip called out for it.
@rjquillin I’m sure it would age further, I worry about bottle variation based on the other CT reviews recently. My bottle opened up over a few hours, but didn’t become “better” during that time. The finish lengthened at the expense of increased harshness.
This cork did get me down the rabbit hole of synthetic/manufactured cork replacements. I was unaware that Nomacorc had different stoppers for different aging curves. I knew that was the case for screw tops and DIAM, but didn’t think about it for “plastic” corks.
Opened a bottle of 2009 Cabot Syrah. Corked. I’m going to try again tomorrow and see if it blows off, but signs are not pointing in the right direction. Damn.
Then I moved on to a 2015 Davide Carlone Croatina Colline Novaresi
Grilled a couple of big ribeyes tonight.
I opened a 2011 waterbrook Cabernet Sauvignon reserve
My bride opened a 2015 bonny doon a proper pink 70% tannat and 30% cab franc. Happy Friday everybody!
@CorTot@ScottW58 Yes, we’ve enjoyed every bottle we’ve opened so far. The old vine Rosé was excellent, this one almost as good. Maybe they could do a post-summer deal with WD to move some Rosé and some of that delicious sparkling Gewurz.
@CorTot@klezman@ScottW58 I bought their mystery 6-pack, and then filled out a case to get free shipping. I picked one of those sparklers, and was happy to find another among my mystery selection. I still have one left.
I haven’t tried the verjus yet. I bought a couple of those, though I think I traded one of them to Cesare. I seem to remember that Scott really liked it, when it was up on Woot.
Back from a week in Portugal, so last night a 2013 Charles Smith Viognier with fresh oysters to start, then steamed mussels in a tomato/chorizo broth (+ sour dough bread). Tonight, margherita grilled pizza with a 2011 Castellani CCR Campomaggio.
Already have tonight planned out. For our 40th anniversary, planning on grilling some prime ribeyes and enjoying them with a 2013 Woot Cellars Revelry (just seems appropriate).
@chipgreen@jmdavidson1 Following chipgreen’s advice, I gave the bottle almost 5 hours after opening before we drank it (it had really smoothed out over that time, as I gave a quick taste when it was opened). I had it with some Costco Prime Ribeye Cap steaks (they are kind of rolled/bound strips of steak) that turned out absolutely fabulous. It was a dinner to remember. The back of the Revelry bottle says, “Revelry is a wine for for good times. Celebration is in its molecular structure. So gather round with your own revelers. Pop, pour, and start the party.” If they had added “pause” after pop, they would have nailed it! I’m looking forward to (but probably also hoarding) the other 3 bottles I got on November 21, 2017, in the waning days of WW. Well done, RPM-revelers and @PeterW, well done!
@jmdavidson1
2 years ago I bought two bottles of this stuff, earlier this year I told some friends (who I know buy the stuff regularly) that we should do a dinner around these wines they agreed and I got to taste through a bunch of vintages!
@rjquillin This is holding up quite well. Cork was perfect; ~4mm saturation. A bit of sediment, to be expected, but a nicely aged cab on the lighter side of the spectrum.
With some Flannery hanger steak following sashimi with G-50. A rather odd surf and turf. @TechnoViking@Winedavid49; you made me search for it, thanks for the reminder.
@trifecta The Pinot was very good, probably at peak or a little past, it was like drinking a cherry pie,delicious. I have a couple of more and am going to put them on my drink in the next year list.
Went up to APL Restaurant in Hollywood for a birthday dinner. Brought a few bottles but ended up opening a 2011 Ridge Estate Cabernet. Phenomenal.
Oh yeah…100+ day dry-aged tomahawk rib chop?! You’d better believe it!
Tonight;
2008 Roessler Pinot Noir Laurelwood
Seems I still have a decent quantity of these to work thru…
Worked well with some broiled salmon.
Last night;
popped a
2008 Fonseca Porto Vintage Quinta do Panascal
after working through some open 2013 Wellington
Chardonnay and Meeks Hilltop Ranch Zinfandel
Birthday dinner with friends.

2008 Eagles Trace Latitude 38

2014 Corison CS- I know to young but it was delicious- hell I might not be here in another 10 years.
2009 Lieff CS Auberge Road Vyd. If you haven’t tried Costco’s Butternut squash ravioli, put 'em on your must buy list. Seasonal item, btw. Add sage butter and wowza…delicious.
Is there a thread for GO finds?

N.V. Pavi Sémillon Due Sorelle Vin Santo w/ bread pudding
2017 Van Ruiten SP Rosé after dinner while watching Jurassic World.
2014 Six Sigma Ranch Diamond Mine Cuvée. I don’t know what it is this weekend, but I seem to have picked sweet ones this weekend. I can’t find the actual RS on line though.
I had my retirement dinner at Cooper’s Hawk (Napverville, IL) tonight and had their Cabernet Sauvignon with dinner. It was a smaller group in their private room, and since the restaurant had a minimum charge for the room the VP that was present sent me home with a 12 liter bottle of their Cab. My first (and probably only ever) Salmanazar! Party, anyone??!!
I opened a Laura Michael 2010 Zin that I’m pretty sure I got on woot. Saving her more recent ones! or at least trying to.
See picture above. Text copied from last night on August thread.
@rc70 Nice. It seemed like a no-brainer, even if it is a football player’s vineyard.
@jmdavidson1 Nothing wrong with working with former football players. I’m in the process of purchasing a home using a realty office run by a former NFL player (Jason Whittle).
2013 Jana Cathedral CS. Good bones but too young to drink now. A 1 hour decant did little to it.
@jmdavidson1 I’d think rpm’s 10 year rule of thumb of 10 would aptly apply here.
@rjquillin Sometimes you just gotta open one to see where it is in its development.

@radiolysis I see no 2007 Bandol on their website…nice find!
Wednesday night had some after work fun, Thursday not so much
@ScottW58 Nicely done, as always.
Starting the afternoon/evening with 2013 Liquid Farm La Hermana Chardonnay. Deliciousness.
Then we finished the evening with a bottle of 2012 Meeker Fro-Zin dessert wine. Essentially Zin picked at normal ripeness, frozen post-harvest to make an icewine-style dessert wine. I love it when those turn out to be great wines, this one did.
2011 Scott Harvey Zin - Old Vine Reserve White label
2009 Etre Wines Chardonnay
2007 Buena Vista Pinot Noir Estate Vineyard Series Ramal Vineyard
2012 Waxwing Spring Hill Vineyard Pinot Noir
With homemade pesto.
@klezman
One of my favorite Sauv Blancs (2007 Gann Family) was made from Spring Hill fruit. Another “unsung hero” wine from wine.woot.
Had dinner with @MarkDaSpark and he stopped by afterward. i now have empty bottles of 2003 Port and 1999 Tokaji…
2015 Dennen Vacationer Rosé
One of my “unsung hero” wines from wine.woot. Wines that flew under the radar but ended up being personal faves with great QPR. Almost halfway through my second case of these.
Bonus: This wine also introduced me to the music of Brett Dennen.
2014 Cameron Hughes Lot 606, Rutherford Cabernet
Quite good, but might be at the peak. It’s under Nomacork, which I didn’t know until today. I had intended to keep it longer, but the grilled tri-tip called out for it.
@radiolysis A '14 at peak? Guess that would confirm/support the rpm adage most wines are now produced for drink NOW!
I knew that was the case for screw tops and DIAM, but didn’t think about it for “plastic” corks.
last night with ribs
Broken Earth Quadrant 2012 CdR Rhône Blend
With ugghh Turkey burgers…wine was great tho
@ScottW58 She makes fantastic wine
Post-Yom Kippur dinner tonight…probably will at least pull out a Riesling or a pink. Not sure…
Man these girls make a really nice wine! Who knows what I will eat, just got home from work
Opened a bottle of 2009 Cabot Syrah. Corked. I’m going to try again tomorrow and see if it blows off, but signs are not pointing in the right direction. Damn.
Then I moved on to a 2015 Davide Carlone Croatina Colline Novaresi
Had my last 1996 Ardente Cab a few nights ago. Still hanging around. Finishing shorter, fruits fading. Great juice for the price and region.
@TechnoViking that Stuff was special.
@TechnoViking @Winedavid49 Was? Still is.
Gotta go dig out some bottles.
Grilled a couple of big ribeyes tonight.
I opened a 2011 waterbrook Cabernet Sauvignon reserve
My bride opened a 2015 bonny doon a proper pink 70% tannat and 30% cab franc. Happy Friday everybody!
@CorTot Nice and happy Friday!
The rest of waterbrook and my bride opened a 2016 the rock wall wine co viognier kristens vineyard with grilled pork chops.
Summer ain’t over yet! 2016 Navarro Mendocino Rose. What I bought on a cold, January BD yields dividends today.
/giphy Berserker Day
@InFrom Never tried one of those but i’m guessing it is good
@InFrom @ScottW58 all the Navarro bottles I’ve had have been good. I’m surprised we don’t see them on here.
@CorTot @ScottW58 Yes, we’ve enjoyed every bottle we’ve opened so far. The old vine Rosé was excellent, this one almost as good. Maybe they could do a post-summer deal with WD to move some Rosé and some of that delicious sparkling Gewurz.
@CorTot @InFrom @ScottW58 I’ve got a bottle of the sparkling Gewurtz from this year’s BD. Glad to know it’s delicious!
@CorTot @klezman @ScottW58 I bought their mystery 6-pack, and then filled out a case to get free shipping.
@jmdavidson1 really?? We get no pictures of Portugal or what you drank!?
@ScottW58 No pix, sorry. Beautiful in Porto, Duoro Valley & Lisbon tho. Wine costs only about 12E/bottle at restaurants. Not great, but drinkable.
WB, jm! Tonight I’m drinking a surprisingly youthful tasting 2008 Gazzi Pinot Noir.
2014 Bridge 1904 Cabernet.
2014 Tamber Bey Rabicano
Already have tonight planned out. For our 40th anniversary, planning on grilling some prime ribeyes and enjoying them with a 2013 Woot Cellars Revelry (just seems appropriate).
@Mark_L
Congrats! Make sure you give that Revelry some air time, it’s still a beast!
@Mark_L congrats on 40 years’
@Mark_L Congrat’s on 40!!! Update us on how the Revelry is, please.
@chipgreen @jmdavidson1 Following chipgreen’s advice, I gave the bottle almost 5 hours after opening before we drank it (it had really smoothed out over that time, as I gave a quick taste when it was opened).
2013 scott Harvey zin (red label) with BBQ chicken
@CorTot
That is my “go-to” BBQ wine - perfect with ribs and/or chicken!
@chipgreen and I’ll add that it’s doing just fineeee…
Leftovers from a fantastic Schrader dinner last night.
@ScottW58 Shrader. Wow. Pricey. I hang with the (Cheap) wrong group of wine friends.
@jmdavidson1
2 years ago I bought two bottles of this stuff, earlier this year I told some friends (who I know buy the stuff regularly) that we should do a dinner around these wines they agreed and I got to taste through a bunch of vintages!
@ScottW58 this might be first time I’ve seen scott and leftovers in the same post.
@CorTot heh sometimes I get lucky
Mom in town…
2009 Château de Sours Crémant de Bordeaux Reserve de Sours Sparkling Rosé Brut
And then a 2007 Corison Syrah with smoked lamb shoulder.
1997 Ardente Estate Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Espressione
@rjquillin This is holding up quite well. Cork was perfect; ~4mm saturation. A bit of sediment, to be expected, but a nicely aged cab on the lighter side of the spectrum.
With some Flannery hanger steak following sashimi with G-50. A rather odd surf and turf.
@TechnoViking @Winedavid49; you made me search for it, thanks for the reminder.
2012 Foxen Syrah Williamson Dore Vyd to go with frilled rack of lamb, oven roasted brussel sprouts and boiled potatoes.
@jmdavidson1 how about “grilled” and “brussels sprouts”
@jmdavidson1
I kinda like “frilled”.
2011 Expression 38 Pinot Noir Gap’s Crown
2010 Winesmith Cabernet Franc Lake County
Prime Rib Eyes, grilled shrimp, fresh corn.
@rc70 How was the Pinot drinking?
@rc70 Taco night and I thought the 2010 W Smith CF would pair well and it did.
@trifecta The Pinot was very good, probably at peak or a little past, it was like drinking a cherry pie,delicious. I have a couple of more and am going to put them on my drink in the next year list.
@jmdavidson1 Clark’s CF just seems to go well with most food, pretty good on its own with some good air time.
2005 Haras de Pirque & Antinori Albis, Maipo Valley Chile. 80% Cab Sauv 20% Carmenere. Lot of life left.
@klezman you’re birthday? congrats!
@klezman now that’s a good night!
@klezman wow my grammars horrible.
What, nobody drinking tonight?
2007 Easton Rinaldi Vineyard Zin. One of the best QPR Tour purchases at $15/bottle.
@klezman Finished off the scott harvey zin from sunday night.
@CorTot not my birthday…that’s half a year away. My mom’s partner.
But damn that was tasty.
Finishing off left over wine(s), so yes we are drinking.
@jmdavidson1 Opened a 2005 Used Automobile Parts and it is not over the hill (counter to CT date of drink by 2016).
Tonight;
2008 Roessler Pinot Noir Laurelwood
Seems I still have a decent quantity of these to work thru…
Worked well with some broiled salmon.
Last night;
popped a

2016 Tercero aberration Cab Franc
2009 Lieff CS Auberge Road Vyd. If you haven’t tried Costco’s Butternut squash ravioli, put 'em on your must buy list. Seasonal item, btw. Add sage butter and wowza…delicious.
@jmdavidson1 Mmm, the thought of it takes me right back to Tuscany… Yum.
Last night
2010 Two Jakes Petite Sirah with some TBones and Spaghetti.
2016 Laurenz V. Singing Gruner Veltliner
Wasn’t digging the slight fizz.
2016 Château Maris Minervois
This is about as average and unexciting as you can get.
Well this is pretty damn exciting!
2012 Broken Earth Quadrant CdR blend. Very pleasant, a little too sweet in the finish. Most of the case will go to my buds at work.
2011 Rascioni & Cecconello Maremma Toscana Sangiovese Ciliegiolo

2016 Tercero Cinsault (although he prefers spelling it Cinsaut)
2014 Woot Cellars LARGE BOLD TEXT
I had my retirement dinner at Cooper’s Hawk (Napverville, IL) tonight and had their Cabernet Sauvignon with dinner. It was a smaller group in their private room, and since the restaurant had a minimum charge for the room the VP that was present sent me home with a 12 liter bottle of their Cab. My first (and probably only ever) Salmanazar! Party, anyone??!!
@Mark_L Congratulations and enjoy! My father says that every day is like Saturday once he retired.
@Mark_L Totally envious. Congratulations!!! The question is “So today, are you on vacation or are you retired?” Win/Win.
@Mark_L Yes congratulations! I’m looking forward to that day now what in the hell do you do with a 12 liter bottle?!
@jmdavidson1 The dinner was tonight, but my official retirement date is October 15 (8 more days of work…).
@Mark_L
Congratulations!
@Mark_L Correction – it is “only” a 9 liter bottle (equivalent of 12 standard bottles).
@Mark_L
Congrats on the retirement! You might need some help pouring?
@chipgreen @Mark_L
Minor details ha!
2008 Roche Pinot Noir, Barrel Select Reserve
I bought this on futures at my first visit there in 2009. It did not disappoint!
(hijack) Time to move this thread to OCTOBER.
