Propane for things you associate with a grill in the parlance of our times, e.g. steaks, burgers, brats, etc. Charcoal/Wood for things you associate with BBQ, like pork shoulders, briskets, whole birds.
Propane with wood chunks most of the time. Smoker with charcoal and wood chunks when lots of things need to be smoked.
Wood or charcoal, but Dale from the Hank Hill cartoon, giving the turtle hell, would probably please the crowd better, regardless.
