Bastille Day is the national day of France, or as they would say in France, Fête nationale. It is the 14th of July, same day as the Storming of the Bastille in 1789. After finance minister Jacques Necker, who was sympathetic to the 98% of France that weren’t clergy or nobility, was dismissed by Louis XVI, the already on-edge Parisians started to riot. One of the locations they targeted was the Bastille, a prison that had held people jailed because of royal indictments. The prison at the time held only seven people, but the storming was partially a symbolic act and partially to get to any stored ammunition. The day would officially become the national holiday over a century later in 1880 after much debate.
