About Powder Keg Wines: “In 1848, a national sensation made its way to California, this sensation was later to be known as the California Gold Rush. During this time, prospectors deployed many means in their search for gold, from pickaxes to dynamite. The sensation lasted about seven years, this culminated in a great deal of migration to California and the shaping of many future industries. This era is the inspiration for Powder Keg Winery.”

TASTING NOTES: “The deep ruby color foretells the rich fruit experience to follow. Loaded with bramble berries and black cherry, the flavors end on a spicy note with vanilla and white pepper. The silky tannins round out the experience, adding a lengthy finish.” (AbV 13.96%, pH 3.54, TA 5.87 g/L)

VARIETALS: 75% Petite Sirah, 9% Cabernet Dorsa, 9% Segalin, 7% Proprietor’s Blend

BARRELS: Probably not in a used powder barrel.

PAIRS WITH: Grilled rib-eye steak, braised short-ribs, and barbecued chicken covered with a tangy barbecue sauce.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: How many euphemisms there are for going to the bathroom. Yeah, there are the simple ones like, “I gotta go to the Jon,” or “I gotta use the head,” or “I’m going to the Lou.”

Then you’ve got, “Oh, I’m going to powder my nose,” and “I’m going to pluck a rose,” which both feel dated nowadays. You could say you need to “answer nature’s call.” Maybe “go see a man about a dog.”

And of course everybody knows, “I’ve gotta go number one/two.” At some point we developed some sort of numeric code for bathroom actions. It makes it tempting to say something like, “Oh, I’ve gotta go number seven, I’ll be back,” and leave others to contemplate what a number seven could even be.
