The Japanese public broadcaster NHK, operating several radio and TV stations, has a strange mascot known as Domo. A rectangular, brown monster with two beady black eyes and a near perpetually open mouth, it began to show up in stop-motion interstitials between programs around the end of 1998. Originally nameless, people began to identify him as Domo due to someone using the greeting “Domo, konnichiwa” in the second episode. Domo typically functions like very does in English, though it can be shorthand for thank you or part of a greeting. The ambiguity of whether it is part of the greeting or a reference to his name, however, led to it sticking as a name for him.
