About tercero wines: Larry Schaffer is tercero wines. Once upon a time, he worked in the ever stable “music” and “publishing” industries. He soon realized that he desired more from life, perhaps more of a challenge. So, he went back to school, faced down humanity’s age old foe “The Sciences,” and emerged with degrees in both Viticulture and Enology, leading to a promising future in wine. A year after he moved to the Santa Ynez Valley and worked as enologist for Fess Parker Winery, he took the plunge and started making his own wines under a personal label: tercero wines.

TASTING NOTES: “This wine is a rather ‘showy’ Grenache - soaring aromatics with fruit and spice up front and center - but is not overblown at all. And this wine has great structure as well - the tannins are prominent and show off the ‘completeness’ of this variety.” (AbV 14.5%, pH 3.71, TA 5.7 g/L)

PAIRS WITH: Basic burgers and pizza to more complicated red meat dishes.

THAT REMINDS ME OF: How after 75 years, Go Set a Watchman was published under the guise of being a sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird. The book would set sale and pre-order records, likely because Harper Lee had not written a book since To Kill a Mockingbird despite it being a classic. However, the book had actually been written prior to To Kill a Mockingbird, and in all likelihood was a manuscript that was developed into To Kill a Mockingbird. Go Set a Watchman takes place in the 50’s, with an older Scout Finch and Atticus, and touches on many similar points, but it has a much different feel to it. The book centers around Scout feeling alienated by the prejudice and bigotry of her hometown after returning from out-of-state, particularly within her own family. The portrayal of Atticus differs greatly from To Kill a Mockingbird, which was rather distressing for many fans.

At the very least, Go Set a Watchman is fascinating when viewed with the understanding that it became To Kill a Mockingbird after much editing.
