2018 Angeline Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County
Tasting Notes
“A serious red with currant, sweet-tobacco and mahogany character. Medium to full body and soft, velvety tannins. Reserved and beautiful. Drink now. Screwcap.” 92 Points, James Suckling
Fresh wild blackberry bramble with notes of dry red pepper flakes, Padron peppers, and persimmon skin. Ripe cherry throughout with a clean, fruit-forward midpalate and structured tannins. Concentrated and complex. Pairs effortlessly with New York steak with green peppercorn sauce and whipped potatoes.
The consulting winemaker for the 2018 Angeline Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is Keith Emerson, best known for his 100-point Cabernet Sauvignon from Vineyard 29.
Vineyard/Vintage Notes
Vineyards
Blending exceptional wines from California’s best appellations and vineyards, we focus on highlighting the depth and nuance of each site. This practice allows us to consistently draw recognition for our wines, and it’s how we make wines you’ll look forward to opening every night.
The vineyards used in the 2018 Angeline Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon come from the best vineyards in the Sonoma County appellations. Many of these vineyards have created wines seen in numerous Wine Spectator Top 100 lists. The secret to the wine’s freshness, structure, and spicy complexity lies in the unmistakable mountain terroir.
Vintage
From start to finish, 2018 was a very steady season, offering weather that was reminiscent of years prior to the drought. Higher than average yields and excellent quality brought about a fruitful harvest beginning in late August.

We received our special delivery on Wednesday. We opened it Thursday night and my wife and I both had a glass. First impressions - it seemed high in alcohol, with notes of cocoa and black fruits, there’s a hint of vanilla. Medium tannins and a short finish on the palate.
We had another glass on Friday. The wine was definitely showing better. Cocoa continues to be evident, but the black fruits are more forward. The tannins are still quite subtle. While my palate is normally fairly well aligned with Suckling, I can’t agree with his assessment of this wine. This is a decent daily drinker, but nothing more. I was hoping for more…

I would say Suckling is -7 to 10 points! And Vanerchuck was the only person who would say a wine sucks or pass that was selling that wine. I gave him credit for that.
So the flying monkey was heading towards my old address and some quick work by the crew at WCC, crew being you know who, turned his little a** around and got him on the way to the right place. Enter a bottle of 2018 Angeline Cabernet Reserve
It’s been more than a few vintages ago but we sold a good amount of Angeline at the shop I used to work at so I’m familiar with the wines/pricing and how I’m going to handle it, which is basically going to be unscrew cap and pour.
So in the wine fridge on it’s side (no sediment) for a couple days it goes.
After a rough socially distanced day at the beach yesterday and admittedly a few hoppy beverages that probably should have been a bit more distanced as well on said beach it comes out of the fridge, 60 degrees F. Cap twisted off, sniff on the bottle, smells good, cabby/fruity, nice. Poured a glass off into a small decanter, a small glass for myself and lovely bride, remaining wine staying in the bottle.
So, nice nose and aromas as mentioned. Good fruit, not jammy, we’re both thinking raspberry. On the palate good entry/middle/moderate finish. No holes to speak of. Definitely showing some heat which stayed on. Finish is mildly tannic and gritty. Oak treatment whatever it is seems in line, nothing sticking out. Appropriate acid. No real change sipped on it’s own as we went through dinner but it was better with food (Nothing crazy, Flannery shortloin tails, baked red potato, fresh wax beans parred and grilled). The meal definitely hid the heat and smoothed out the rough edges. The pour that was in the decanter before we called it a night, no real difference. A couple of good glasses left for today, bottle in the fridge with the cap back on.
Comparisons. I’d put the 2014 Bergevin Lane that is higher retail but was less money than today’s offer here on casemates ahead of it. If I were to go and buy something comparable retail that is easy to find it’d probably be Educated Guess, but that’s usually a buck or three north of $20, not $13 and change or whatever this comes in at. I would however prefer the Educated Guess.
Bottom line, particularly knowing the lineup, I was hoping $10 on the offer. But it’s a solid offer, worth the price of admission. Decent cabs at this price point are hard to find. Some minor issues but throw some red meat, ribs, brisket at it. Buy it to drink it. A chill won’t hurt, as in cellar temp.
Cheers!
Not in on this one (just bought 6 cases in the past few weeks)…I guess I’m part of the problem with the “Due to High Demand” disclaimer…well ya think there is a high demand? We’re all stuck at home with our kids/spouses/in-laws, etc…our only escape is our wine! LOL…J/K…but yea, our consumption of wine has increased about 5 fold…How about some Pedroncelli Offerings! PLEASE

@vwsmaltz I see most of the same review from JS at wine dot com where it is available for $19/btl.
WD/WCC sure seems to have the best current offer.
@vwsmaltz James Sucking score - 3 points = most people’s scores. There is a reason he rose to prominence, and it isn’t his refined palate.
It’s like Gary Vaynerchuck, just get really hyped up about everything you try or taste and the samples will just keep on flowing.
Wish I would’ve had that foresight 10 years ago. I could be giving out 90 scores like tap water and getting all the bottle samples.
@rjquillin yes - the price here is great…
@KNmeh7 I agree completely… my comment about palate is that I can see where he’s coming from most of the time… in this case not so much…

Damn. The specs on this look good
I see that there is no cork and it’s a twist off. I was thinking 10 bucks a bottle was more like it…but at this price you can’t go wrong
Day two. Nose a lot more subtle. Alcohol/grittiness smoothed out, but not gone. A little black cherry showing. Still in good shape.

@WreckDiver There was a Pedroncelli offer less than a month ago. You can’t really expect them to come along every month.
@ddeuddeg I know, was in for 2…im just greedy. We would love to see the Rose of Zin again…ok, so we like all of them. Lol…
The last Pedroncelli was great - got 2 cases and probably should have gotten another.
