Anne Amie Estate Dry Riesling, Yamhill-Carlton, Oregon
Tasting Notes
Our Estate Riesling from vineyards directly in front of our winery includes the original 1979 planting. High sun exposure and unique soils yield an intensely perfumed and expressive wine exhibiting pure varietal character. Aromas of jasmine flower and marmalade lead to flavors of stone fruits and a pleasing minerality. The fresh acidity and long finish mean you can enjoy watching this wine develop for years.
Vinification Notes
Grapes were hand-picked and brought directly to the winery in 1/2-ton totes. They were carefully sorted by hand; whole cluster pressed and placed into temperature controlled stainless steel fermenters where it was slowly cold fermented at 45°F for maximum varietal character. The wine was fermented in small lots so we could use more than one yeast strain to give more complexity to the aromatics. It was an extremely cool, slow fermentation that took more than a month to complete. The wine was aged in stainless steel before being bottled and then aged in bottle a minimum of one year.
Aroma
Lemon drops, petrol, kumquat, ripe pineapple, white pepper, feijoa
When Dr. Robert Pamplin, one of Oregon’s most forward-thinking philanthropists and businessmen, purchased the historic Chateau Benoit Winery in 1999, his vision was to create wines of the highest quality to reflect his passion for excellence. To this end Dr. Pamplin has charged winemaker Thomas Houseman and winegrower Peter Ebbers with the task of crafting extraordinary pinot noir. Thomas, Peter, and the rest of the crew are absolutely passionate about producing wines of the finest quality and have dedicated their lives to this quest.
Pinot reigns supreme at Anne Amie Vineyards with Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc forming the heart of our production. Complementing the pinot family is Old-Vine Estate Müller Thurgau, planted in 1979. As with all great wines, our’s start in the vineyards. We are fortunate to have some of Oregon’s best sites, all of which are Salmon Safe and LIVE certified. Our estate vineyards, along with those we purchase from, receive only the minimal required treatments and yields are dramatically reduced in order to give fruit with great depth and complexity.
Our estate vineyards are located in the rolling hills of the Yamhill-Carlton District and on the steep hillsides of the Chehalem Mountains, both nestled in Oregon’s verdant Willamette Valley. Our LIVE certified winery is located on our Yamhill-Carlton property, a few miles from both Lafayette and Carlton, Oregon.

@lxlx@radiolysis
I could help absorb a few.
And I really do need to get rid of what I have for others, it’s just been problematic lately to do so and needs to happen.
@radiolysis Unfortunately, not likely.
I did get a few bottles moved north that will likely show up, and I think I have a few more still to locate and re-locate north. @bfibear are any bottles still available?
2+2 or even one each?
@lxlx I do make it up, used to be more than now.
Guess I should pass now, but bookmark to contact you should I make it up and see if you still have some to offload.
Thanks!
@radiolysis@rjquillin sorry, didn’t see this until just now! sure, why not? if each of you want a 2x2, that’s $41 a pop, I assume @radiolysis can grab 'em both or something? Let me know…
We were again bequeathed the always-pleasant surprise email with the “Lab Rat - Wine is Coming Your Way!” Subject line last Thursday. Less than 24 hours later, our friendly UPS driver had delivered the package and the bottle immediately found a home in the fridge.
Looks and Initial Aromas:
Pale straw in color. We picked up some apple blossoms, faint citrus, juicy pear.
Initial Taste:
Lots of citrus; lime stood out to me. The better half thought she picked up a few bubbles on the tongue at first. Dry with a really clean, crisp finish.
We already had one of those modish meal kits lined up for Friday dinner. At first I was thinking we’d taste the wine over the weekend, but then the more I thought about it, the more I thought this might turn out to be a serendipitous pairing…
With Dinner:
Okay, this was absolutely great with the meal. It really clears the palate well, and I mean that in the most complimentary way. The dry acidity cut right through the sweetness of the squash and fattiness of the sausage. 10/10 pairing.
Sidenote - dinner was tasty in and of itself. Almost a Thanksgiving stuffing flavor profile, with lots going on from the sausage, squash, apple, cranberries, and nuts. Every bit played off the Riesling very well.
+48 Hours / Other Pairings:
The bottle sat capped in our fridge until we were able to return to it this evening. I made grilled chicken thighs and gold potatoes sautéed in some bacon fat and herbs. It was ok with the chicken and good with the potatoes - as on Day 1, the acidity did a great job cutting through the starch.
Dried strawberries were a real standout pairing. A sip right after eating one brought out a subtle sweetness in the wine.
Salame was the opposite. Now, that’s a typical Sangiovese pairing for us for good reason, but it really didn’t work here. All I got was an unpleasant metallic taste without any notable flavor.
Merlot Bellavitano cheese was nice, with the acidity again cutting through the creaminess. Parmesan Reggiano was also delicious; the wine really balanced out the nuttiness of the cheese.
Pistachios complemented the wine (or vice versa) and the overall mouthfeel was slightly creamy.
Finally, we tried some almond blueberry dark chocolate (72% cacao) that was delicious. The wine really brought out the blueberry flavors and held its own against the rather dark chocolate. We realized after the fact that the chocolate package said it paired well with a Dry Riesling and, well, yup.
Worth It?
SWMBO said she thought this was a good $12 bottle and I came to the conclusion that I’d be fully satisfied with it at $15 retail. No surprise to see Casemates come in at a solid QPR. Absolutely worth it in my book.
Lunch on Friday was Thai and, in hindsight, I wish I’d opened this sooner to see how it stands up to some spice. Typically I go a smidge off-dry with heat but I think this might just work.
Overall, this is best with food. I think it would be quite versatile with plenty of lighter fare, dried fruits, jams, and the like. The nose is great and the initial taste fills your mouth with some great tropical flavors, but the acidity produces a really clean finish.
@sdilullo We picked this up a year ago and think you’re spot on with how well it goes with lighter fare. Really happy to see it here again and it’s fortuitous that this fills an upcoming void in our inventory. That case price is fantastic.
@winecaseaholic Check your area (and Costco) and if you see a Finger Lakes riesling from Empire Estates, buy some. It’s outstanding. I found it earlier this year at my Costco in Southern CA and wish I had bought a case.
@michaelvella You’re closer to Ron than us LA folk, then. The gathering is east LA/San Gabriel Valley. But if you southern southern CA folk hold one there will be a good LA contingent.
@michaelvella I’m only 18 miles from San Ysidro, so you’re somewhere near me! Yay! There are a small handful of us down here, but always happy to have more.
@michaelvella@radiolysis Well, as some know, I’m in Lakeside, and have friends in La Mesa. Kinda wish there were a few more of us down here to gather, when It’s a bit more prudent.
@radiolysis@rjquillin Would be nice. It’s rare that I would be into a whole case (never bought one from Casemates) but since you’re both close, nice to know there are folks that might be into splitting. My petite sirah is supposed to be here Weds, looking forward to that one.
@bfibear Perfecto! I could probably walk it over to you. I’ll put one case on order if you can confirm. Then if we get interest on a third-way, we can figure that out then.
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?

Anne Amie Oregon Estate Dry Riesling - $35 = 25.91%
@DebRVA I’m in MD and have been “border running” for some of the folks in NOVA where I previously lived during WW days… but making it to true RVA area May be a longer haul than I had planned, especially if you were planning these for a family gathering for the holidays…
@bunnymasseuse Very kind of you! That’s ok, I’m sure they will offer some other good deals between now and the holidays. If not, I will just have to break out the last of my Wellington whites. Cheers!
I don’t have anything to say other than Oregon Riesling is underappreciated, I’ve had a few Anne Amie bottles over the years, was never disappointed, and at this price… well… that’s a no-brainer for me.
@jfuruno At first I was thinking I’d pass, but actually it’s been a while since we’ve had some white on hand, plus it’s a good deal, so sure, why not! I could do a full half, but would be fine with thirds if anyone else is interested.
Anyone in SF / Bay Area interested in splitting a case? I have a few right now but wouldn’t mind picking up 4 or 6 more if anybody is interested in a two or three way split.
@mic@davidj94112 I had already put in my order for a case before I saw this, but could split it with someone else in SF Bay Area. I’m in La Honda, but frequently venture as far north as SSF, and south as Santa Cruz on the coast or Morgan Hill in Coyote Valley.
Went in for a case because the case of Chardonnay I bought from Casemates from this winery a while back was delicious. Plus, my husband loves an Oregon dry white.
First time lab rat, long time buyer! I was happy to see an offering from Anne Amie after the fun sparkling case I have been enjoying this summer.
This 2016 Dry Riesling is a totally different beast from that. I let it chill in the fridge overnight before opening. The nose is definitely straight out of the description. My first notes were kumquat, grapefruit, and petrol. So off to a good start.
This is a VERY dry Riesling. It’s crisp, plenty of acid, and relatively clean on the palate. I say relatively because there is a bit of the minerality, petrol, and oddly honey character at the back of the palate on the finish. Though it’s very light in body/mouthfeel. The primary flavors on the front end were almost Concord grape and citrus fruit on my first tastes. Now, I’ll be fair. I think it was far too cold in my fridge.
After letting the glass warm up just a bit, the green apple and fruit notes really took off. That was more what I was expecting. Day 2 improved things a bit for me. The petrol notes on the nose are still there, but I don’t pick up any of the flavors on the back of the tongue. I think things seem to have gelled together with a really nice green apple, honey (maybe honeysuckle), and mineral flavors all playing nicely together. And the acid still has enough pop.
This should hold up to food pretty well because it can cut through most of the typical white wine foods you think of. I didn’t have it with anything spicy, but I think it would be a super clean and refreshing option for your Indian or Thai food nights.
I pegged it at a good deal at $12-13/bottle and it’s coming in just under that for the 4 bottle option. The case price is a steal and easily worth picking up if you want an interesting alternative to the traditional Sauvignon Blanc in the super crisp and refreshing category.
Is/has the winery checked in?
I’d like to know why I’ve received shipments from them in 2019, but the three times they have had offers in 2020, no Iowa… wish I had friends in South Sioux City or Omaha…

@rjquillin bummer. should i drop your wine off with anyone up at the swap? or just keep it down here and maybe set things up locally?
@radiolysis just hang on to it, assuming you have room. We’ll do an exchange, soon, I hope.
I picked up a case and am in 92823. If you’re near North OC (or don’t mind driving there), would be happy to offload a half or a third.

@kawichris650 Why thank you, much appreciated!
@ludwigmace Agree on the pricing - another great Casemates offering, no doubt. If this is a style you’re after, I’d highly recommend it.
@sdilullo thank you for the review. Enjoyed reading about the different pairings.
Link to previous offer discussion. It was vintage 2015. This new similar offer is 2016 + 2017. Nice to get a mix.

@klezman Where is it? I’m Southern CA as in about 20 miles north of the border…

@michaelvella @radiolysis @rjquillin North Park here, happy to split a case if anyone wanted to try a couple bottles of this stuff!
@bfibear Perfecto! I could probably walk it over to you. I’ll put one case on order if you can confirm. Then if we get interest on a third-way, we can figure that out then.
@radiolysis I already ordered a case; I was gonna drink it in-house but sharing is absolutely possible!
@bfibear If you have 2+2 to pawn off on me, that would be amazing.
@radiolysis You bet. Never done this before, so bear with me while I figure out DMs or whatever!

Anne Amie Oregon Estate Dry Riesling - $35 = 25.91%
OMG! Got it last time, and down to two bottles. We are SO going to get this! Finally a riesling that doesn’t taste like eating a sugar bowl!
@salpo We just finished off last year’s case a few weeks ago, so this is perfect timing.
@xandersherry I know! Now I need an Amrita offering, and it would be great to have that Muller Thurgau as well and I’m set.
Actually, a Bonterra Dry Muscat would be very appreciated too…
No Virginia? {sad face}
@DebRVA how deep in the heart of VA are you?
@bunnymasseuse Richmond, where are you? Any interest in a case split? I was thinking this would be great for Thanksgiving.

@bfibear amen to the underappreciation of Oregon’s dry whites!
Yes!
@LambruscoKid any interest in splitting a case?

@LambruscoKid Nice. Thanks. Are you okay if I place the order and we can see if anyone else chimes in?
@jfuruno Go for it. Thanks!
Anyone in SF / Bay Area interested in splitting a case? I have a few right now but wouldn’t mind picking up 4 or 6 more if anybody is interested in a two or three way split.
@davidj94112 What part of the Bay Area? We are Danville (East Bay).
@texassarah I am in SF proper, so Danville a little too far away unless you will be in our near the City anytime soon.
@davidj94112 I agree. I won’t be headed in as far as I know. Maybe next time!
@davidj94112 I’d do a split. In sf proper, south beach, like.
@mic @davidj94112 I had already put in my order for a case before I saw this, but could split it with someone else in SF Bay Area. I’m in La Honda, but frequently venture as far north as SSF, and south as Santa Cruz on the coast or Morgan Hill in Coyote Valley.
@mic That works for me. Do you want to order or would you prefer I do so?
If any PDXers like their sparkling amrita it’s 7.99 at new seasons right now. At least on Hawthorne
@CruelMelody Have you had this? Any good? I am closer to Raleigh Hills and suspect it’d be there as well.
@jfuruno yes it’s a very crisp, refreshing sparkler. Their wines are very fruity with great acid.
@CruelMelody Sounds great. Thanks for the heads up and rec.
@CruelMelody Picked up a few bottles today. Thanks again. Excited to try it.
What’s the drinking window on these two vintages? How about the 2015 vintage?
@Boatman72 Drinking window for the '15 is 2019 to 2021. I too would like to know what it is for the '16 & '17.
@Boatman72 I opened a 2015 a few weeks back and it was drinking well. Good and fruity. It was a big hit.
@bunnymasseuse any chance I could convince you to receive a couple cases? Happy to split if you’d like.
@opiate2002 Thanks for the tag had not checked today’s offering yet. Sure, can do! Any other NOVAites?

Not really that dry. MB moderately dry would have been a better description.
@Dougtoow I agree. Pretty tasty though.
Popped a 2017 tonight recently purchased from another source. It’s fine, nothing to write home about as they say.
