The 2014 Cuvée is again a selection out of our Estate vineyard production, always a good thing but perhaps never more so than in this exceptional vintage. In many respects, it is a near carbon copy of our breakthrough 2012 effort: deep blue violet, penetrating aromas of black fruits and meaty/savory elements, all backed by well integrated tannins and crisp acidity. This wine was blended to be an earlier drinking expression of the year’s bounty (and with a touch of air it begins to explode in the glass). Given how it holds up and develops layers of fruit and nuance in an open bottle after a couple of days, it is destined to sustain years of development and pleasure giving at the table.

We are nestled in a modest but beautifully situated hidden valley west of the town of Sebastopol. The proximity to the Pacific Ocean offers cool, daily maritime breezes that provide optimal conditions for Syrah and Viognier—the vines we’ve planted at our estate – as well as Pinot Noir, which we grow at a vineyard just across the street. These qualities, among others, make our moderate Sonoma Coast appellation distinct. Although much of this valley is now planted in vines, tremendous biodiversity remains intact.
Our farm (called RoadsEnd Farm) supports not only grapes, but a diversity of other fruits, vegetables, and plant life. As our agricultural exploration has revealed, we’re not just growing plants, we’re growing flavor, specifically the flavor of this place. This recognition propels a commitment to winegrowing and winemaking that gains depth and nuance with each passing year. The land is teaching us a great deal, and we are willing learners. 2017 will mark our 13th year.

Baker Lane Sonoma Coast Cuvée Syrah
3 bottles for $49.99 $16.66/bottle + $2.67/bottle shipping
Case of 12 for $164.99 $13.75/bottle + $1/bottle shipping
Some really scary reviews. Of most concern are those about vibration.
Of less concern are reports of only 73 and 84-88 bottle capacity for a 96 bottle cellar. In other words, much space lost if not cellaring solely standard 2.75” diameter Bordeaux bottles.
OTOH another reviewer stated: “By carefully placing bottles both forwards and backwards in the fridge we have fit over 100 NON-standard sized bottles (larger than bordeaux). The bottom rack is huge and fit 3 rows of bottles. The top rack is also oversized and is holding our magnums.”
@MSUMike here is the review you mention:
93 points Wine & Spirits
Grown at the organically farmed Baker Lane estate, this shows the sunny warmth of the 2014 vintage, providing an unusually muscular expression of coastal syrah. It starts out with a compact, meaty black-olive flavor, then keeps gaining nuance with air, turning toward manzanita bark and peppercorn, spicy brightness breaking through the savory bulwark of structure and the alcohol warmth so that a fresh, iron-tinged woodland flavor lasts. If you happen to have a friend who hunts wild boar, this would make a great holiday gift. (475 cases)
fwiw
seems a good deal, looks like it’s running about $20 a bottle not including shipping at a few retail sites
@MSUMike We can trade out Cornerstone Syrah (shipped today) for Baker Lane. We can settle up once the FedEx dust settles. Thanks for taking the lead on this one!
How much more are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations)
2014 Baker Lane Sonoma Coast Syrah - $35 = 17.50%
My Las Vegas folks, it’s warming up! This is getting close to my cut off time for shipping wine. Unless another chill comes rolling through. I’ll wait for the rats, but looking at its past vintages shows promise. If all looks good let’s split between 3, yeah?!
@InFrom Your comment is not “sent” to the rest of us until it is locked. So we may never have known you made one. And now that you say you did I want to know.
@jml326 Well, I sent and then immediately tried to edit/delete, but it appeared (maybe I flubbed it) that I couldn’t get rid of the comment box itself, even if I removed the text. Hence my post.
The comment was just speculation about whether the DC–> MD gambit would work, and I decided it didn’t contribute to the conversation.
@rjquillin Its kind of you to offer and if I didn’t have to answer to my wife I’d ship to you. She is yelling me having wine shipped to my vacation spot to fly it back home is crossing the line of an alcoholic.
@marla25 Count me in to the MD splitter group! Just joined today after a scary inspection of my wine rack yesterday and noting the dwindling stock of Wellington (etc.) from the old departed supplier. I like to keep Syrah, Zin and a red blend on hand.
I’d be happy to split this if any Buffalo folks are interested. I’ll likely order 3 anyway, but they sure do make it tantalizing with the discount on a case. In this case (npi), for example, if three of us each wants to order 3 bottles, we can split a case and get the fourth bottle for $5.67. Hard to resist.
@catcoland@lamplighter@noodles OK, I’ll go ahead and order a case, and we can sort out the details. I don’t know who @lamplighter is, but if we wind up with a 4-way split, that’s OK with me. The more, the merrier.
@catcoland@lamplighter@noodles Case is ordered. We got two of the remote party packs. We could host a party, but it will have to wait until May, because we don’t have a free weekend before then. It would be nice to get to know more of the local people.
@catcoland@ddeuddeg@lamplighter wow you guys. I’m probably gonna sit this one out but you must have impressive cellars. I’m swimming in wine here and I probably order half the stuff you guys do. Invite me over for your next tasting!
@ddeuddeg@lamplighter@noodles I’ll split the case with you @ddeuddeg and will ask 2 folks here in the southtowns who have split offers with me if they’d like a few bottles too. Let me know when it’s arriving and I’ll meet you.
@catcoland@lamplighter@noodles Keep in touch. I’ll always be willing to help out if there’s something you really want, and there’s a good deal to be had. Next wine tasting, you will all definitely be invited.
@catcoland If you have some friends wanting to grab some of this one, just let me know. You can have as much as you want, as long as there’s a few left for me.
@catcoland@ddeuddeg@lamplighter ahh let me know if you need me to take 3. I wasn’t planning on it, but whatever - I don’t want you to end up with more wine than you wanted. I’ll take one for the team lol. Just let me know
Again, anyone in eastern WV, or from, say, Hagerstown MD to Winchester VA? The case price is sooooo good… (edit: K member, so no shipping charge added, just tax…)
@CorTot on prior purchases, other vintages, reviews? CT notes, such as they are for prior vintages are mixed or non-existent.
Party rats failed to provide TN’s, myself included as I missed tasting this one.
Under $14 delivered is sure favorable.
Just curious…

@jeffreywsnyder I’ve had good luck with Craig’s List.
Two so far, one a ~480 bottle two door cabinet and the other a 9x6 walk-in room with racking, but you have to be patient.
@tiger7610 I can’t get this in Maryland, but will be in NY in a few weeks, are you planning to order any? I can give you a code from our launch party (if you call it that!)

@ilCesare Sorry, but I need to place this at the top of “Comments” so it gets attention:
ADVICE NEEDED ON SHOPPING FOR A WINE CELLAR, REFRIGERATED (compressor type)
SEEKING ADVICE from CaseMates knowledgeable “mates”.
We need to purchase a second refrigeration wine cellar with at least 80 bottle capacity, preferably >95.
Would love some advice for a barebones compressor-driven refrigerated wine cellar.
Price is a priority.
It’s going in the basement, so appearance is irrelevant.
Small quiet fan to keep temperature consistent throughout would be desirable.
Prefer single temperature mode as it will be for reds.
Noise isn’t important as long as not accompanied by vibration.
Our ages are 66 & 74, so we need it to last at least 30 years. (Wine consumption leads to longevity, no?)

Whats a Cuvée
@Twich22 Think blend.
a type, blend, or batch of wine, especially champagne.
Following. DFW peeps? 93 on W&S rating. Love a good syrah… will wait on some rat reports.
@MSUMike count me in for 3-4 depending on fellow Dfw support.

@MSUMike Sure - I’ll go in on 3-4 if we can get a group together. I also love syrah but I’m not really wanting a whole case.
Well I was hoping for a RAT report but guess I’ll go ahead and press the button.
@MSUMike We can trade out Cornerstone Syrah (shipped today) for Baker Lane. We can settle up once the FedEx dust settles. Thanks for taking the lead on this one!
@MSUMike I’ve got a case on order also if anyone wants to share in some.
@Tomasop I didn’t place my order yet. Would you like to do a 4 split of yours or do you want more than 3 bottles
@MSUMike I will gladly split the case. 3 bottles is good for me.
@MSUMike I’m on no cost for shipping.
@Tomasop Thanks. @johnnelseon7333 and @LSeewoester.
@LSeewoester @MSUMike @Tomasop sounds great! Thanks for pulling the trigger fir the Dfw crew.
Oh, man. The wife is going to be mad about a nice Syrah not coming to PA.

@TechnoViking I’ll think a bit.
@TechnoViking OK, I’m in if we can get our 3rd musketeer to chime in; Ill pull the trigger this time.
I want a syrah, and neither that have been offered have been available in MD.
@marla25 and no PA either can’t even mateleg this one.
@jml326 @marla25 I wanted to go in on this one as well. Come on Casemates, we need some more MD love! And no SC, so I can’t even mateleg to my parents.
@jchasma @marla25 Anyone want to try to ship to a DC Walgreens and have it rerouted to a Maryland Walgreens?
never mind, I deleted a comment

@InFrom I doubt it would work on FedEx side of things.
Maybe delayed shipment to San Diego… I’ll be there for Cinco de Mayo ?
@jml326 I could do a hold for you here in SD if you want.
@InFrom @jml326 my guess is that it will work, just do it for science and report back.

Any N Nj people interested in splitting a case?
@rmm989, I can take up to 6 bottles depending on how many you want to let go. I’m in Jersey City. My email is Abhilash.Srivastava@gmail.com.
I remember this being available for tasting, but didn’t get a chance to try it. Anyone have notes, or other experience with this wine?
@WkdPanda
I missed trying It!
In for a case - I have to use my $10 coupon, right? Notes on the 2012 sounds like my style Syrah!
@jhkey Coupon??
@coryczorna @jhkey
Probably a Kickstarter coupon if you were already a VMP.

In for threeeeeeeeeyouch!
@nighguy that is truly disturbing.
I really want this, but not allowed to use the credit card for a week. . If any SE Michiganders want to place the order and split, I am in.
@jrbw3 Rob, I just ordered a case, and will split it up to three ways. With tax and free shipping, it’s $14.58 / bottle. Anyone else want in?
@borisgoodenough sounds great. I’m in 6 or 4. Thanks!
@borisgoodenough @jrbw3 if there’s any leftover I’ll take some but if not no worries. I can take it or leave it.
@jrbw3 @kasandrae You’re the third in on the case – 4 bottles for each of us, and we’re good.
NYC willing to share. willkimmail [google]

@ddeuddeg I’m on the fence here. Waiting for a rat
@ddeuddeg Actually, it’s $5.01. Silly math error.
@noodles I think the rats were the party-goers but nobody seems to be chiming in with notes except to say that they remember seeing it.
@ddeuddeg @noodles I was thinking of ordering 3 also so a 3 way case split works for me. Any interest @lamplighter?
@catcoland @lamplighter @noodles OK, I’ll go ahead and order a case, and we can sort out the details. I don’t know who @lamplighter is, but if we wind up with a 4-way split, that’s OK with me. The more, the merrier.
