2020 Deerfield Ranch @Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma Valley
Tasting Notes
Sonoma Valley is the perfect terroir (a French word meaning “Sense of Place”) for growing Sauvignon Blanc. It is one of the most flavorful grapes in the world. This 2020 Sauvignon Blanc is full of tropical fruit flavors. It is crisp, bright, and refreshing. Enjoy it as a cocktail, with shellfish, and pasta with pesto.

PJ and Robert met at Berkeley in 1968. Robert, a backyard mechanic, kept PJ’s Italian sports cars running – takes an Italian to do that. As a thank you, PJ gave Robert, who was already interested in fine wine, a winemaking kit – seemed a good gift for a chemist grad. Robert made his first wine in his garage in Berkeley in 1972. He entered it in the California State Fair and took home the Best of Show Award. Robert found his passion and continued making wine in his garage turned winery for his family and friends.
Ten years later, PJ and Robert left their good jobs in the city to pursue their dream of owning a winery in the Sonoma Valley. In 1982, they bought the Deerfield Ranch in Glen Ellen where they got married, and turned the horse barn into their first winery. The Rexes still live there today, however, in 2000, they bought 47 acres on Highway 12 in Kenwood to expand the winery operation. The Deerfield Ranch Winery is still family owned and operated producing about 20,000 cases a year.
Our wines are barrel-aged in the 23,000 sq. ft. cave, also home to the tasting room open daily to the public. Winemaker Robert Rex was the pioneer of the cleanwine® movement and can often be seen at the winery. His philosophy is “Wine should be good and good for you.”

Labrat reporting for duty. Thank you all for the opportunity. Full disclosure, we don’t drink a lot of white wines. When we do, it is either an unoaked Chardonnay or a Pinot Gris.
Since this is a white, we served it cold. My husband preferred it directly out of the refrigerator, while I liked it better after it had a chance to warm up.
It has no smell or “legs” when it is cold. It was typically very pale in color. The first taste reminded us of lemon. I got green apple/lemon/white peach/hints of dare, I say, gravel. It had nice acidity. Not puckering, just nice.
First night we had it with steelhead, and a fresh salad with corn, fresh mozzarella, aged balsamic, tomatoes, and lemon olive oil. The second night, we made grilled hamburgers and roasted potatoes/asparagus. The wine did not change flavors from night to night.
Would we buy it? Probably not. We are overloaded with wine, thanks to Casemates. It is not a complex wine, but I can see it at a summer barbecue or pool party. Thank you, as always for the opportunity.

We tasted this wine after a long afternoon poolside with our 13-year-old and his basketball teammates. It was a warm, humid evening and after a day of hot dogs and chips our palates craved more adult fare.
Having had our share of many unbalanced, overly grassy or citrusy SBs in the past, we were a little skeptical. But this wine turned out to be nicely balanced with an unexpectedly longer finish.
On first pour the wine presented a nose of lime, pineapple, papaya and a hint of green pear and starfruit. The first sips were filled with tropical fruit, a hint of almond, green pear and lemon peel in the finish, infused with salty minerality. The wine had necessary acid, but also a surprising softness in its undertones. Citrus yielding to nuttiness, with bitter mineral at the end.
We paired the wine with an assortment of cheeses.
A plain goat cheese softened the wine and complemented the flavors. An aged goat cheddar brought out a nuttiness. Gouda overpowered; brie flattened the wine and made it bitter. The wine found its best pairing with an assortment of marinated olives – the minerality and acid of the wine exploded with the saltiness of the olives for a briny delight.
Based on this experiment, this wine would pair best with tangy cheeses (especially aged goat cheese), olives, prosciutto, salty meats, and shellfish, especially shrimp.
Enjoy lighter fruitier wines at the beach or pool, save this wine for the wind down – great with food, but also very enjoyable on its own.
We didn’t discuss price but seeing what it’s going for, we’ll probably do a case. The QPR seems on point and I would think this is in the $20 range at retail.
Thank you for the positive comments for the Deerfield Wine. The important factor, other than great taste, is that our wines are low in sulfites and histamines, which make it perfect for those with allergies. (No headaches, hives, itches or swelling!) 2020@Sauvignon Blanc is a nice simple wine for summer poolside fun!
