2021 Donati Family Vineyards Claret
I received notification on 08/06 from Casemates that wine was coming on 08/07, which was surreptitious with also receiving an alert from UPS. I am fortunate to have a UPS Store a mile away, so I executed the Change Delivery to that location. It’s been hot here in the Midwest, like the rest of the country, so I didn’t want to have to report that the wine was cooked. I picked it up on 08/07 and let it rest in the cool of my basement. Today, 08/10, I opened it.
I’ve had other Donati wines in the past and was always impressed with their quality for the money. We drink mostly reds, so this was very welcome. I checked for a pairing with a claret and found that grilled meats work well. For dinner, I planned on grilled lamb chops, grilled zucchini and a side of burrata salad. (See photo in the What are You Drinking thread.)
On to PnP. The color is a dark cranberry. It has good transparency. The center is darker than the edges. Swirling reveals slow falling legs. +1 sampled this with me, so I combined our impressions. The initial aromas are of vanilla, as well as red and black fruits. The first tasting reveals tart fruits, almost sour-like. The tannins and acidity were sharp. I decided to decant it and let it rest for an hour. Revisiting this provided a good glimpse of the potential for this wine. The tartness was gone and the tannins were dry. The red and black fruits are prominent, but there is also a nice balance of flavors that makes this wine hard to resist. We picked up some vanilla, as well as either cedar or pencil shavings. Since 5 grapes varietals went into this, it’s understandable that clear flavor definition is somewhat difficult to discern. It is definitely fruit forward and medium bodied. This wine is flat out delicious. Because it’s flavor is so balanced, this will pair with just about any food, but it will also do well just by itself. We’re in for a case, no matter that cost, and we’re recommending it to our friends. You can’t get a better endorsement than that. Thanks CM for this opportunity.
(At the 6 hour mark, this wine now has some dark chocolate and cherry notes. Yumm!!)
@jmdavidson1 I’m not picking up any “smoky” in the aroma. Seeing that it was in oak goes along with the vanilla we picked up. I would say that with decanting the tannins were not intense, but smooth.

2021 Donati Family Vineyard Claret - $41 = 23.97%
The 2016 version of this was the very first wine I bought from Casemates back in August of 2020. Really enjoyed it and would definitely be buying again if I wasn’t so overloaded.
Hi Everyone,
Sorry for posting this so late, but this past weekend I was at the campgrounds with one of our grandkids and putting down some concrete pavers.
A thanks goes out to Matt at WCC and to everyone else behind the scene to send me a bottle of Donati 2021 Claret from Paso Robles. I love multi-varietal wines because the wine becomes multi facet in taste.
After the bottle arrived because of the outside heat, I put it in the refrigerator for a couple hours, then took it out and let it come to room temperature until I had time to pull the cork.
On Friday afternoon I pulled the cork and smelled the opened bottle. Gosh, it was like smelling a bouquet of fragrant flowers! I always let the bottle rest open for one or two hours before sampling, but this time I had to pour a small sample. On my palate I got various red fruit with light alcohol and acidity. The wife brought home dinner that consisted of Wiener schnitzel, spätzle, and German potato salad. What a bad choice of food to taste this multi-varietal red wine! A nicely grilled steak would make this wine sing! But I had to head out to the campgrounds.
I got home at 9 pm Sunday night and sampled the wine again. It still had a great fragrance, the alcohol and acidity was a little bit stronger and again various red fruit like red cherry, raspberry, strawberry, and maybe a little licorice in the finish. I was impressed with this wine. The Donati Family Vineyards 2021 Claret hit the Bullseye! I think the 'Mates would like this offer!
Even though I’m up to my eyeballs with wine, I’ve gotta taste this wine with nicely grilled steaks!!!
I also volunteer at Camp Cheerful in the Therapeutic Horsemanship Program in Strongsville, Ohio. They are having their 20th year Anniversary on September 20th for the Horsemanship Programs that have been helping special need children of all ages! I plan on sharing this case and other wine by also donating wine from my overstocked wine collection!! These children get to interact with very smart and loving horses and it warms my heart tremendously every time we put the children on a saddle!

And here I just got to Paso! Not going to be here long enough to taste though.
