Aromas of stone fruit, pears and tropical fruit with delicious notes of toffee highlight this rich yet balanced style of Pinot Grigio. The result is plenty of roundness to the mouthfeel, leading into a crisp, long finish.
Winemaking: The grapes were gently pressed as whole clusters and the juice was received to a stainless steel tank. The juice was cleanly racked and fermented in stainless steel at a cool 55 degrees Fahrenheit to retain the fresh fruit aromatics. Following fermentation, the wine was aged in stainless steel tanks, in order to achieve bright acidity.

About The Winery
Winery: Elder Rock - Place Matters
Millions of years ago, alluvial fans and flood plains containing rock and shale fragments were deposited along the Central Coast region of California. These ancient marine layers are evidenced today by the rocky terrain and soils that we call ‘elder loam ’. At Elder Rock, we strive to craft wines that display the unique terroir and prehistoric roots of the land, wines that express a strong sense of place.

I received the coveted Lab Rat email that we were to be Lab Rats! WooHoo! The box cradled a 2018 Elder Rock Central Coast Pinot Grigio. ddeuddeg and I immediately began meal planning. More on that later. I popped the bottle in the fridge on Saturday, since we planned on having it with dinner on Sunday. We pulled it about a half hour before dinner and began our tasting. True to expectations, the wine was too cold, but still tasted really good—we knew that its flavor profile would change throughout dinner. It definitely tasted like a Pinot Grigio. There was a lot of minerality, to be expected from its place of origin, and blended with a bright fruitiness, and a certain crispness with a long finish. I got a bit of honeysuckle on the nose and also, perhaps strangely so, a bit of oakiness, although I would suspect that this wine should have been in stainless. As the wine warmed, the flavors became more intense and very pleasant and enjoyable. I’m afraid that I still didn’t get a lot on the nose but I did notice some flavors of melon and apricot.
For dinner, ddeuddeg was the master of the grill. We had grilled chicken breast that was marinated in our local Chiavetta’s marinade along with grilled pattypan squash, seasoned with sea salt, grilled Hakurei turnips and radishes seasoned with sea salt and pepper and topped with fresh herbs from the garden: dill, chives, sage, and oregano, and steamed asparagus with a dash of lemon juice and ground pepper. The wine did well with the entire meal. I especially liked it with the pattypan squashes.
I would say that this wine is well-balanced and well-made, and is an easy drinking wine–a nice wine for the price.
A few days ago, we received a bottle of Elder Rock 2018 Central Coast Pinot Grigio. I think it’s worthy of note that, first and foremost, we see wine as an important, if not essential, part of a meal. We’re primarily red wine drinkers, but enjoy whites as well. Pinot Grigio happens to be a varietal we’ve recently developed an interest in, thanks largely to a local restaurateur who specializes in Northern Italian cuisine, and who features a lot of dishes that are particularly enjoyable with it. In fact, he has even featured a bottle bearing his name.
This one is a lovely pale straw color, but didn’t have much of a nose at first, probably because of excessive chilling. As it warmed a bit, I found aromas of honeysuckle and peaches. On the palate, there was plenty of minerality and flavors of stone fruit; I thought I tasted apricots and peaches. The wine was crisp and dry with plenty of fruit, a terrific accompaniment for our grilled chicken with grilled pattypan squash, hakurei turnips, and radishes.
This was a thoroughly delightful wine, perfect to enjoy with a summer evening dinner, definitely an excellent deal at the price for 6, an outstanding deal at the case price. I have no doubt our friend would be pleased to serve it at his restaurant.
Good morning from North Carolina!
Received a bottle of Elder Rock 2018 Central Coast Pinot Grigio.
I could lie about my lab rat experience, but feel that I need to be completely honest…
First, I will try to justify to you and myself why I drank the whole bottle before even getting to dinner, yes, the whole bottle
PLAN
5:30pm - Slow cook chicken legs that were marinated overnight in garlic, lemon, white wine and rosemary, side dish of drip pan potatoes and asparagus using a charcoal fed grill…this is where the problem started, I thinkit took three tries to actually get grill going, which doesn’t normally happen.
5:45pm - Opened screw cap on chilled bottle while grill was lighting. I was skeptical on this wine as it’s not my usual choice. Not much on the nose and taste was quite delicious, but probably needed to warm a little.
6pm - Second attempt at lighting grill, better grab another glass just to test my taste buds…I was having an issue deciding what fruit I could taste, and did I actually taste oak or maybe a nutty taste…this was tough!!!
6:30pm - Grill is finally lit, chicken and potatoes are doing their thing…okay, let me grab another glass to do my job!
7:45pm – meat nearly done, relaxing in the garden with Hubby, watching hummingbirds…OMGoodness the wine was gone!
A first for me and I’m not sure to be embarrassed or mortified in admitting that I drank the whole bottle by myself before I actually sat down for dinner.
After seeing the case price this morning, trying to decide on one or two cases…but then concerned that hubby might need to hide it…should I see a doctor?
@CorTot@SueBee22 pretty sure I channeled this rattage with my own 2017 Scott Harvey Zinfandel Mountain Selection tonight in your honor, SueBee22! Well done! TAKE NO PRISONERS!
@rjquillin Perhaps. No idea how all of that works. If you read the history info it’s quite interesting. They have been tuned in to the business side of the biz day one…

@SueBee22 Congrats on one of the funniest reviews I’ve read in a long time.
@SueBee22 Did you author this?:
@Mark_L
@SueBee22 ummm, how was the wine?

Geezus, rambling around the internet and Scheid Family Wines has like 45 labels. Not saying that in a negative way, just had no idea.
@kaolis I wonder if that allows them to ship more bottles to some states?
@rjquillin Perhaps. No idea how all of that works. If you read the history info it’s quite interesting. They have been tuned in to the business side of the biz day one…

@kaolis I think it’s a negative, not enough focus, lots of bulk juice.
@CorTot @kaolis
Yeah they are in for the money
@kaolis @rjquillin
None of the Scheid wines ship to OH.
@chipgreen @kaolis @rjquillin should be thankful
In for a case! This sounds like my wife’s jam.
