Fossil Point Chardonnay is designed to showcase the bright natural acidity and fresh character of our vineyard sources, located in the Coastal regions of San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties. The wine’s vibrance and purity of fruit are an expression of the nearby cold Pacific Ocean. The grapes are hand-picked, wholecluster pressed, and cold fermented in a selection of stainless steel tanks and neutral French oak barrels using classic winemaking techniques. We conduct a very clean malolactic fermentation to moderate the naturally high acidity, and perform battonage (lees stirring) several times monthly in order to enrich the wine and protect it from oxidation.
Our Central Coast AVA bottling is fresh, crisp, and flinty in the best tradition of classic Chardonnay. A portion of the grapes selected for the blend are of the very aromatic Musqué clone, bringing a suggestion of grapefruit and lychee to the nose, along with white floral tones and lemon zest. Only a very limited malolactic fermentation was conducted, in order to preserve this unique aromatic signature and retain liveliness in the wine. Ideal with oysters, mussels, or a grand platter from the raw bar.

Our vineyard sources are all in close proximity to the cold Pacific Ocean, and are shaped by the seasonal flow of its surface currents, sea breezes and fog. Our soils are composed of coarse sand and calcareous shales uplifted from the ancient seafloor and weathered into place over millenia. We farm with close attention to our delicate coastal environment always aiming for the highest sustainable quality from our land. Our winemaking is hands-on, small scale, and attentive to the individual needs of each lot of grapes.

From Wine Enthusiast:
Fossil Point 2015 Chardonnay (Central Coast) 88 Points
Proving one of the more reliable affordably priced brands from the region, this bottling offers fresh jasmine, tangerine pith, crushed chalk and pineapple aromas. The palate is a bit more tropical, delivering coconut and mango flavors with enough restraint to please many.

Rat reporting for duty! I would not normally have signed up for this as I don’t have the experience so many on these forums do, but will do my best, please be gentle.
Wine was chilled (and rested) for 2 days before I had a chance to open it and try it. The color is light straw color. I didn’t get much on the nose initially but citrus, as it warmed up there was a little floral notes, but nothing distinctive. First sip I definitely got the flinty notes mentioned above, a bit like sucking on a stone, but in a good way, also some tart green apple. Subsequent sips and as it warmed up the apple changed to citrus and there was LOTS of citrus, definitely grapefruit, I would even say pithy-grapefruit. It was very tart, the kind that sort of hurts the back of the jaw joint (anyone else experience that, or is it just me?). The flint/stone stayed through out, especially on the finish. I did not get any oak at all from this chardonnay, which for me was a little sad, as I like a hint of oak. Unfortunately, the meals I had planned over the couple days I could try it were not really suited to this wine, they were spicy mexican and spicy asian flavors, which were not a good compliment, so I can’t provide much on food pairing notes.
In the end, this is not something I would go for myself, not because it was bad, but because I am not a big citrus fan. But, would gladly serve this to my friends/family who are fans of that.
I’ll preface this by saying that Chardonnay is not one of my favorite varietals. I blame this on my elder aunt who insists on always serving mega-winery buttery, oakey Chardonnay with everything… and I mean everything.
This however, was a very pleasant surprise. After I rescued my rattery from the clutches of the noncompliant FedEx service, I set it in my cooler to rest and chill for the night. I opened it on Saturday for a first try and again on Sunday for another review.
Nice yellowy color, not too greenish, but not amber either. I found the taste to be crisp, tart at times, and a mineral bite was present. As it warmed, the fruit did come forward, and the bite mellowed out a bit. Some grapefruit taste, but not like some SB from Australia have. On Saturday, I was just tasting it without pairing.
On Sunday, I had it with some alfredo spinach garlic chicken pizza, and it was very enjoyable. It cut the heaviness of the cream sauce and cheese. I’ve got about a glass left, and it will be tried with some chicken salad this evening.
Thanks Rat/Rattress! Glad you woke up…ha!
Nice notes, you’ve pushed me into my first Casemates purchase. Fills a hole in the drinking side of the cellar.

@Rstoker Sorry, saw your response the next day. Didn’t order any this round. I’m sure there will be more summer drinkers coming up!
@wineyum no problem. Let me know the next time you want to split.
