A summer bouquet of freesia on the nose of this crystal clear and stainless steel fermented Pinot Grigio. As the wine swirls around, a hint of wildflowers pop, creating a fresh and delightful palate full of honeydew melon, pear and passion fruit. Drier than most Pinot Grigio’s, this wine is your classic summer sipper.
Bringing J Dusi into the public realm of the wine industry has been a life-long dream for me. I grew up living on the vineyard, participating in grape farming, and begging for my Grandfather to teach me the winemaking process.
My first vintage was when I was sixteen. My Grandfather guided me through the process from recollection of the days when his family ran the original “Dusi Winery” back in the '50s. I learned, from him, the REAL Italian way to make wine, which happened to be a light variation of today’s California styles wines.
My Great-Grandparents, Sylvester and Caterina Dusi settled into Paso Robles in the early twenties. They had three sons; Guido, Dante and Benito Dusi. They were active proprietors in many local businesses including vineyards, farming, restaurants, and Dusi Winery. I was born and raised on the vineyard that my Grandfather Dante, his father and two brothers planted in 1945. As vineyards were rare in the area at that time, Zinfandel was the Italian varietal of choice. They implemented the farming practices of head pruned vines and no irrigation, dry farming. Today, 65 years later, we still carry on their farming traditions and uphold one of the areas most loved vineyards. Dusi grapes can be found in some of the most sought after Zinfandels in Paso Robles.

@CorTot My wife and I both enjoyed that same 2012 J. Dusi PG. Jana Harvey was also a fan (we shared it with her after a dinner hosted by Scott in Wooster, OH). In fact, we liked it enough to serve it as one of our wedding wines.
The 4 bottle price for today’s offer is very similar to what we paid on WW for the 2012. At the case price, this is a steal!
Last Thursday (2/15), I received an email from my work mail room that a package was ready for pick up. My curiosity was piqued as I was not expecting one. On arrival, they said “You have wine!” which has been a recurrent response now for too many years. I saw it was a single bottle shipment and was excited to know what the mystery wine would be. It was a feeling I had experienced when monkey’s used to deliver mystery wines.
I opened the package and saw it was a Paso Robles Pinot Grigio (2016 vintage) from J Dusi Wines. I placed it in a fridge and asked several colleagues to help me taste on Friday, 2/16. The following notes were consistent across five of us.
Nose: There was a sweetness when smelled along with notes of green apple and possibly melon. Smelled similarly to certain Sauvignon Blanc’s.
Taste: On the front of the palate, there was also a bit of sweetness with dried apricot notes and that green apple/sour description again. There was some acidity with the sweetness. The finish is where things got interesting…. The wine left a bitter note and a strange viscous feeling that was not altogether pleasant.
Alcohol: 12.5%.
Conclusion: Everyone had a bit more and thought it was ok. We believe it would have been better to taste on a warm/hot day. A Seattle office tasting in February when temp in the 40s was maybe not the optimal tasting environment. Fair price would possibly be $10 - $15 bottle.
We were glad to have been given this Lab Rat opportunity. Hopefully these notes helped define it a bit.
@jimjacks66 Thank you for the notes. I have often found that wines straight from the fridge can have a slight bitter note on the finish which usually goes away as the wine warms up a bit. With 5 of you doing the tasting, I wonder if maybe the wine was finished before it had a chance to warm up much in the glass?
@chipgreen I believe you make a great point. If there is a next time to lab rat, I will most likely taste only with one other and over an extended period of time.
@chipgreen@jimjacks66 I would like to understand the science behind this if there is any. Maybe a good question for Clark… I’ll see him in a couple weeks hopefully.
@chipgreen@mehnyblooms@xena67
I just ordered a case. Mehnyblooms gets 4, 4 for someone else, and I’ll keep 4, and Chipgreen can hold onto his entire case.
@conesville Based on the tasting note? Or did you find RS specs somewhere? Perceived sweetness on the nose or front palate is not always due to RS. Sometimes wines with tasting notes describing a “sweet” taste or smell are actually bone dry.
@conesville@trifecta HI guys…This is slightly off dry at 2.5 RS …Barely noticable but just rounds out the finish. Super crisp and clean. Floral and tropical!
J Dusi
@JDusiWines Thanks for joining us! Glad to have you here. After the woot deal many years back the wife and I had the chance to visit you out at the house (before the winery days). Great views, great wines, and great company!
I also really enjoyed the previous vintage of this wine when offered on Wine Woot. I went in for a case and hope I enjoy it as much. The 2012 was a summer favorite for sipping on the deck!
@bruinscbr Sorry about that… The paperwork is so cumbersome for NH, and most people figure out a way to ship to a friend or family member over the state border. Hope you can get some crisp PG!
@JDusiWines Oh okay, so the states allowed are different for each winery? I was thinking it was state laws so would always be the same for all deals. Shows how much wine I’ve bought online ha.
Shirley (username chaosdreamer) is on a cruise, so she’s emailed me asking to post her Lab Rat report on her behalf:
Sorry for the delay everyone! I am sending you this report from a boat in the Pacific Ocean. The email from the lovely Ariana showed up as I was preparing to go on a cruise! Luckily, I was able to get the bottle and share it with family for our Chinese New Year’s Eve dinner (and the day after) before I had to leave town. I am a wine noob and I do not regularly drink wine and when I do, it’s usually red, but I like to do wine pairings or otherwise have a glass of anything that someone more knowledgeable offers when having a meal.
Most of my family members who drink wine mostly drink red, myself included, so the only person who tried the pinot grigio with me was my younger sister, who used to drink somewhat regularly at social settings. She then took the remaining half bottle home to share with her fiancé the next day as he is more of a wine expert.
My notes: Wine was very light (crisp?) in texture(?) and had a pleasant soft floral and fruity scent when we twisted open the top straight out of the fridge. The first sip had a nice fruity flavor (mix of pear and melon?) with a peppery kick at the end. The kick disappeared as the wine lost some of its chill and the fruit flavor intensified to the extent where it actually made my mouth water. The glass of wine went moderately well with the food that we had on New Year’s Eve, which included fish and miscellaneous dishes cooked mostly in a chicken and pork-based broth.
Sister: Day 1, mostly agreed with me but also added apple to the mix of fruity notes. Day 2, did not like straight out of the fridge as the wine was sharp when it was too chilled but was absolutely blown away with how delicious it was as it warmed up and was pair with fresh crab that was simply steamed.
Sister’s fiancé: Crisp, clean notes with fragrant sweet undertones and sweet aftertaste. Good slightly chilled with light white fish like halibut. Good at $12/bottle, bargain at $10.

@ilCesare ok now where is the percent saved compared to full case dude
did he take a holiday weekend?
@communist what a slave driver…
My wife loved a previous vintage of this from WW, we probably went through a couple cases of it.
@CorTot My wife and I both enjoyed that same 2012 J. Dusi PG. Jana Harvey was also a fan (we shared it with her after a dinner hosted by Scott in Wooster, OH). In fact, we liked it enough to serve it as one of our wedding wines.

@CorTot Caved and split a case with my parents

/giphy foul-athletic-direction
@CorTot Awesome, so happy you enjoyed it…!
How much are you saving by buying a full case?
(Note: Tax & Shipping not included in savings calculations)
2016 J. Dusi Pinot Grigio - $30 = 22.22%
PG - finally. How do we buy 2 cases?
Your order number is:

/giphy raging-rested-middle
I accidentally ordered a case if any of the Connecticut folks want to split.
@markgm I “accidentally” order cases a lot. Sadly, my bank account is still trying to get used to these slip-ups.
@markgm
oh,sure…
Why not?
@markgm I can take 4 - but I won’t be back to CT until April, if that’s ok with you.
@markgm I am interested. Not sure how to discuss. 2 or 4. Let me know.
@markgm I am definitely in for 4, if it works out number wise. If not I will order my own.
@markgm @trod1952 @polarbear @rpm
How about this -
Mark, rpm, polarbear split 4 each.
trod1952 & I split a case (in whatever numbers work out)
So - yes, trod1952, order.
@apathy0 @Polarbear @rpm @trod1952
Looks good! Whatever happens, I won’t have too much wine that I’ll complain!
@apathy0 @markgm @Polarbear @trod1952 OK
@markgm Order has been placed… precise-obtainable-genie
@apathy0 @markgm @Polarbear @rpm Maybe I am reading this thread wrong. Did markgm and I both order a case?
@trod1952 Yes, as I understand it…
@trod1952 yes
@apathy0 Wine is on it’s way. Where abouts are you located? I am in Groton CT.
Wonder why this won’t ship to NH

@chipgreen I believe you make a great point. If there is a next time to lab rat, I will most likely taste only with one other and over an extended period of time.
@chipgreen I saw a post you made in 2013 on Woot, seems like you and the bride liked this one. Are you buying…and interested in splitting?
@chipgreen @jimjacks66 I would like to understand the science behind this if there is any. Maybe a good question for Clark… I’ll see him in a couple weeks hopefully.
@mrn1 I grabbed a case and was debating whether to offer some up in the NE OH thread. I am willing to part with a few…
@chipgreen @xena76 @mehnyblooms Let me see if a couple others might like to split a case…so you can keep that one for yourself.
@chipgreen @mrn1 @xena76 I would be happy to take 3 - 4 bottles if someone wants to split a case.
@chipgreen @mehnyblooms @xena67
I just ordered a case. Mehnyblooms gets 4, 4 for someone else, and I’ll keep 4, and Chipgreen can hold onto his entire case.
@mrn1 If you don’t get someone to take the other 4, I’ll take another 2.
@mehnyblooms @xena67 Let’s see if xena67 wants a few, otherwise you and I will have a case of crisp white to kick off summer!
Not dry enough for me

@conesville @JDusiWines @trifecta did the 2012 have any RS? Loved that vintage.
@conesville @losthighwayz @trifecta I keep getting it lower every vintage. So 2012 definitely was a little higher RS. Hope this helps!
J Dusi website has this on a case special at $144/case. Non case price there is $18/bottle. In case anyone wants to re-up after this sale is done.
@trifecta I almost pre-upped after a recent email from them. Glad I procrastinated.
@chipgreen @trifecta and this shipping deal price is way better than from the winery!
I also really enjoyed the previous vintage of this wine when offered on Wine Woot. I went in for a case and hope I enjoy it as much. The 2012 was a summer favorite for sipping on the deck!
@lindylouwho Awesome! The 2016 is just as good!!!
what the heck? Why can’t people in new hampshire buy?
@bruinscbr Sorry about that… The paperwork is so cumbersome for NH, and most people figure out a way to ship to a friend or family member over the state border. Hope you can get some crisp PG!
@JDusiWines Oh okay, so the states allowed are different for each winery? I was thinking it was state laws so would always be the same for all deals. Shows how much wine I’ve bought online ha.
@bruinscbr
Every vineyard/ brewery has to apply individually to each state- so availability will be different for each offering.
Anyone on in the SF Peninsula want to split?
Anyone on the NH/MA border want to split?
@samiam Which one are you? (I’m NH)
@revmem Live in NH and work in MA. I’m in the Monadnock region.
@samiam I just bought a case – getting delivered to MA. Can split if you’d like. @revmem I shot you an email
@jjjayd @revmem @samiam Do we have a nh group yet? I live on the seacoast and might be interested in splitting from time to time.
@jjjayd I’m in!
@samiam I got a case - @revmem will get 6, and I’ll split the other 6 with you - that work? Where are you? I’m in Nashua/Manchester area
@jjjayd That works for me. I’m in the Monadnock region but head over to Manchester a few times a month.

…so good to see this wine up on Casemates! Janell Dusi is a wonderful winemaker, and Paso Robles royalty.
