Colour: The very alluring colour of blush pink candy floss gives a promise of enjoyment.
Nose: Subtle notes of pomegranate, raspberries, watermelon and candyfloss, freshly sliced strawberry, some gooseberries and slight notes of perfumy fynbos.
Palate: At the first sip you are overtaken by the density of flavour; everything that was allured to by the colour and nose is abundant on the palate. It is a fresh mélange of fruit flavours; but also spice and herbs, held together by a perfectly tuned balance of acidity and sweetness. Cabernet Sauvignon, seen and made slightly differently and with all the right notes, this Rosé is hitting each one in perfect harmony.
Method
The cabernet sauvignon vineyards are managed specifically with the idea of rosé production in mind. Early picking dates result in naturally high levels of acidity and a bright spectrum of fruit flavours ideal for rosé style wines. Once pressed, the juice is handled as per Sauvignon Blanc, i.e. cool fermentation with aromatic yeasts to heighten the vibrant, zesty aromas and fresh mineral palate. Crucial to this style of rosé is early bottling in order to preserve the wine’s inherent freshness.
When Mulderbosch founder, Larry Jacobs, bought the farm in 1989 the community referred to the property as “vuilplasie”, Afrikaans for “dirty little farm”. Shortly after, he partnered with Mike Dobrovic, known as the South African Mr Sauvignon Blanc, and together they cleaned up the property and planted the first vineyards. A (small) cellar was later built and the first set of wines were released: Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The dream was to produce wine, but certainly not just any wine; they had to consistently reflect innovation, creativity and excellence.
As an innovator, Mulderbosch was the first producer in the country to successfully create a barrel-fermented style of Chenin Blanc. Trailblazing the infant rosé category with our Rosé of Cabernet Sauvignon continued this thread of innovation. Today, Mulderbosch has achieved commercial success worldwide and has affirmed our identity as a producer of distinctive wines, representative of the soils and climate in which our grapes are grown.
Mulderbosch Vineyards is widely considered one of South Africa’s iconic wineries and has established a reputation for excellence. We are tireless in our pursuit of making wines of the highest quality that honor our proud heritage and can be enjoyed by all.

This is a pretty good deal especially at that price point, imo. I’ve gotten more than a few rosés in my time as a rat, and they’re usually pretty neutral and what my dad calls “vinis”. This isn’t.
Opened this fresh out of the fridge, but it warmed up quite a bit by the end. Unusually for me with rattage, we nearly finished off the bottle. This wine is the definition of quaffable, even with it’s incredibly zinging acidity.
On the nose, raspberry essence. Not raspberries precisely, it’s more ethereal than the heady fruit of like, a cold climate Zin. This is like raspberry cider, or the smell as some one opens a tin of raspberry pastilles. Unexpectedly apple-y too, like a good chardonnay. Something herbal and savory in the mix just to liven things up.
The middle on this wine is incredible. It’s round and full and fat, and the length of this thing goes on for days.
It’s perfect summer glouglou. Well made, flavorful, and it goes down oh so nicely. The worst thing I can say for it is that it’s not overly complex, but that’s part of what makes it a fun summer wine. It’s just begging to be part of a picnic or bbq.

2021 Mulderbosch Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé - $30 = 25.00%
It is always a treat to receive an unexpected bottle of wine via UPS, and today was no exception. Since I am about to leave on a trip, this will be a brief review.
The aroma is fresh, and the taste is subtly fruity, yet dry and with satisfying depth and just a hint of effervescence. It finishes with balanced acidity. It paired nicely with the spicy roast chicken on the menu for tonight.
I first became familiar with South African roses on a trip to Kenya, when they accompanied lunches at our safari lodge. With a relatively low ABV and pleasant flavor and crispness, they were the perfect complement to the meals. The Mulderbosch fits this profile. Totally enjoyable, I would wholeheartedly recommend it for summer quaffing.
Survey says…! Hold it, wait, it’s no survey, it’s Neal and Jaco:
Vinous: “86 Points. The 2021 Rosé Cabernet Sauvignon offers straightforward strawberry scents on the nose. The palate is crisp and fresh with strawberry and candied red cherries. A simple but very more-ish rosé to quaff on a summer day.” Neal Martin
And Jaco Meyer from Decanter Wine Tastings and Club (not to be confused with Decanter magazine)
“90/100…is something different from what you will see on most of the rosé shelves. There are not many rosé wines produced from Cabernet Sauvignon available at the moment, therefore, this one is unique. Above it all, it is really good with a bold complexity and offering something for everyone. In the glass, this wine has a salmon pink colour with some rose gold hues. It has a medium complexity on the nose with notes of fresh strawberries, fresh melon and hints of raspberry. On the palate, it delivers well with the red fruit such as strawberries and raspberries, red flowers, a zippy acidity that is fresh, and a soft finish. The finish leaves a chalky minerality on the mid-palate which is really pleasant and unique…” Jaco notes an RS of 4.5 g/l
I bought the 2018 and loved it. I just found a bottle in the back of the fridge and drank it literally the night before this went on sale. Must be fate!
Yeah, if my taste is in any way in line with the rats here, this wine sounds like an great deal. And for a South African wine, which I don’t see too much of locally, I’m in.

An age-restricted youtube video!?
Why?
Gotta be a first for CM.
Doubtfully so over on meh.
@rjquillin unfortunately it was not for adult content. I mean no actual real adult content…it was only “talking about wine” adult content.
@rjquillin Point of interest: It was restricted at the request of the uploader.
[Which puts it in line with numerous alcohol related web sites.]

@novium And once again, reading rattage reduces my wallet.

I’m amazed a wine from SA can even Ship to WCC and then to customers for under $8 a bottle. That alone is impressive.
In for 12: floral-crucial-juice. I’m a fan of South African wines and can’t resist at this price.
No PA? Ok. I already have a great Rose’
@KSchweitz They are saving me from myself. I swear I’ve ordered Mulderbosch rose from here before.
@eldano @KSchweitz How close to MD border? Could be tempted to wine-leg and meet in PA…. And get a case or so….
@bunnymasseuse @eldano @KSchweitz can be a PA part if looking
I am intrigued based on rattage. In for a case, especially at this price.

Dry Rosé at this price point with 2 good rat reviews going into the summer months. Seems like a no-brainer!

@TimW AND it found the perfect giphy for casemates.
@TimW That giphy could rival this one that I remember (from the WineSmith Saint Laurent offering):
I bought the 2018 and loved it. I just found a bottle in the back of the fridge and drank it literally the night before this went on sale. Must be fate!
@winedavid If I pop open a bottle of Victory can you please make sure to have some for sale on Friday? Thanks!
